The hotel is well situated just off the high street, we managed to park on site, which was a bonus. The hotel was clean but fixtures and furnishings was very out dated and worn. The reception staff were nice and pleasant but we didn’t eat or drink in restaurant so cannot comment on that. The room was very spacious with lovely view of the cathedral but as mentioned before room needs a make over!

Nothing to complain about as such. Staff were very friendly & helpful. Hotel has a superb location for Winchester Cathedral & High St Shopping. Decor was a little bit tired generally but rooms were clean. Parking was good value but it’s a shame it’s on a first come basis & you cannot reserve a parking bay - only a problem if you want to drive out somewhere.

Proximity to the Cathedral is great. The bar and restaurant seem to be in a transition with a new ordering, etc system but that should be transitory. Reception staff very helpful. Room very comfortable-in the heat it wasn’t possible to open windows wider and fan inadequate. I hope they invest in individual room AC units for future visits.

I want to headline this review by saying that the staff at this hotel - reception, housekeeping and restaurant - without exception were pleasant, attentive, helpful and professional and they alone deserve a high-star rating. Additionally, the hotel is very well located for all the main attractions in Winchester. However ... I must concur with earlier reviewers and say that this is not a 4* hotel. It may well have been when Margo & Jerry Leadbetter stayed there but now it is dingy, tired and worn. The attention to detail in the cleaning of our rooms and the communal areas was poor - the internal telephone in one room (which didn't even work) had a layer of dust that was so thick it was solid. The bathrooms, while basically clean, were so shabby that it almost felt unhygienic. If we hadn't already paid a not insubstantial amount on check-in, we may well at this point have taken our chances with the Travelodge across the road. We took our concerns to the reception staff who immediately did absolutely the right thing and offered us alternative accommodations and eventually an upgrade to 'executive' rooms which, while in slightly better condition, still lacked in cleanliness with a grape found under one bed and an abandoned sock under the other. Two out of four windows had very makeshift mechanisms which left the rooms a bit draughty. I'm sure that this hotel was - and could again be - very nice, but it's clearly a couple of decades overdue for a refurb. A shame.

We loved our stay in Winchester,hotel staff were great.the room was nice with a lovely comfortable bed.There was dust around the lamp bases and the back of the tv was very dusty however this won’t stop us from staying again.we are planning to stay again in September.

The location is superb. The room furnishings tired but comfortable. Reception staff were excellent with local advice. Breakfast service and buffet range brilliant. House kerping poor. My bed was never made over 4 days, the body wash ran out and wasn't replaced, my towels were replaced daily which l didn’t require and the coffe/ tea rooms supplies a bit haphazard.

The receptionist was rude and gave no information. The room had cobwebs and the bathroom was awful. The tiles and sealant we covered in mould as were the taps and the toilet was not clean. There was a box of tissues with only 1 tissue in it. The bar was very expensive but the bar man was very friendly

I stay regularly at this property and the standard has been falling. This time the room had not been cleaned properly and the reception desk was only manned intermittently. Also tissues In room no longer supplied and loo paper much cheaper. On previous visits I have noticed that the unattended back entrance is permanently open and taken with the empty front hall, security is non existent. I had the sense that the hotel is struggling and hope that I am wrong as the rooms with a cathedral view are pleasant. (NB the view is obscured for some rooms when trees are in leaf).

Location is very central, hotel lobby is fine, room was nice and tidy but a little tired, bathroom needs updating however it did have a de-misting mirror. No air-con but it did have a good fan and the windows can be opened as well which I prefer anyway. Door lock for our room happened to be dodgy and needed fixing (didn’t unlock and yes it was our room), the night time staff (a lovely gentleman at the reception) was super helpful. The view outside the window was on the street side this time and some building work was happening opposite the hotel. The bed was comfortable so we had a good night sleep despite someone singing their heart out and some loud bin noises happened briefly which both are uncontrollable circumstances by the hotel. Overall I would stay there again if I found a cheaper rate for street side room or if it was facing the cathedral side.

Lovely friendly staff. Beautiful views of the cathedral. Really nice comfy bed. But the hotel is very tired. Our ‘premium’ room which we paid extra for had a very stained carpet and quite a mouldy bath panel. It couldn’t be better located for exploring Winchester but it definitely needs updating. Tinned fruit for breakfast too which I always think is a bit yucky when it’s advertised as fresh fruit salad.

Room was acceptable for one night. No air conditioning but a fan was provided - the room was very warm and the fan quite noisy overnight. Dated decor and significant wear and tear in the bathroom. Plenty of plug sockets but no usb ports in the room. Complimentary toiletries (shampoo, conditioner and shower gel) were good quality. Central location, less than two minutes walk from the high street.

The old Mercure is rebranding. It’s still the same tatty and hideous building but the staff are always friendly and helpful. I had a refurbished room overlooking the cathedral which was very quiet and pleasant. Rooms at the back are noisier.

Booked a one night stay for birthday trip away, first time in this hotel. Our privilege room was on the top floor with nice view of the cathedral, it was spacious & comfortable the bed was big & particularly comfy & I had a great sleep. Large tv, fridge, good coffee, nice toiletries, robes & slippers all made for a very enjoyable stay. Room was a bit cold on arrival but we plugged in electric heater & it warmed up super quick. I would agree with other reviewers that the hotel it’s self needs a refurb yes paint work was a bit marked & chipped & the window catches were certainly passed their best, the window sill area was all a bit scruffy looking & the table top particularly marked & very much in need of replacement. However the room & bathroom were spotlessly clean so no complaints there from us. Breakfast was a very pleasant experience, good selection of hot & cold food, pastries, cereals, fruit etc the coffee machine takes forever as does the toaster but we weren’t in a hurry so didn’t cause us any issues. All in all a good time was had by us.

The iron in my room did not work. I tried multiple times to call reception and they would not pick up. I went downstairs to ask for an iron and the reception staff, at the very quiet reception said she'd get one sent up. It never arrived. I had to chase housekeeping, who eventually brought an iron. The reception staff were extremely poor. At breakfast the coffee machine was not working, and the orange juice and water was not being topped up. All in all very poor for a hotel charging so much.

Staff were welcoming, friendly and very attentive. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very good; I enjoyed my porridge which was made as soon as requested. The bar area had very pleasant staff and a very relaxing atmosphere. This is one of the best hotels I have stayed at.

It was raining and very later, we were tired of trying to find this hotel. The receptionist said she couldnt help us find it at all. Same lady Fara wouldnt open the door to let my husband me and our baby in, though it was cold and raining. Despite me telling her i wanted to book a room because i saw rooms available online, she said no rooms available, go to travelodge oppoisite. She said I could book online if I wanted to, so i did but she still wouldnt let us in! Even though i showed her on my phone. She stood there arguing it takes time for the booking to come through and she needs to wait before letting us in. We asked her why she wasn't checking and she decided to go to the computer. Finally she let us in and then we waited longer, after which she contacted someone to give us a emergency room. Having a 11 week yr old with me made no difrerence, she was adament not to open the doors and she took no responsibility for treating us in this way. I am appauled at her behaviour. She said we could have been drunk and before us there were drunk people around. She also said everyone is the same, thats how we treat them. The manager was spoken to in the morning. He defended her and said this is our policy we have done nothing wrong. But the conversation resulted in him refunding the parking charge. Ive never been treated like this before by hotel staff. The location is superb. The room furnishings tired but comfortable. Reception staff were excellent with local advice. Breakfast service and buffet range brilliant. House kerping poor. My bed was never made over 4 days, the body wash ran out and wasn't replaced, my towels were replaced daily which l didn’t require and the coffe/ tea rooms supplies a bit haphazard.

No-one at the property to greet us. Phoned the contact number and they could not locate the booking. Eventually presumably found it but said no room available and they would have to refund!! Terrible situation for my daughter to suffer when staying for her graduation!

It was fine. Lovely location, right next door to the cathedral and very central. I got the impression there is a budget wing for contractors and another wing which caters more for more social stays, a hotel of two halves you might say but my van wouldn’t fit in the car park and l got a parking ticket which kind of ruined my morning but l would certainly stay again but l’d book a parking space first 🙄

Good room and bed. Choice of menu in the evening very limited. Mostly burger type food so didn’t use the dining room. Realise that it is off season and the hotel very quiet so, unfortunately, no atmosphere in the bar which we also didn’t use.

All the members of the staff that we met were pleasant and helpful. Special thanks to reception, breakfast waitress and lady cleaning member of staff for leaving her work and escorting us to the lift. Great breakfast.

Hotel is tired, needs a refurbishment and money spent on public areas. Staff are lovely but not enough of them to keep up with customer needs. Breakfast was a prime example, it was a busy service, but plates were not being cleared and replenishment of hot and cold food not kept up with. Generally poor value for money.

We paid £15.50 each for a full englush breakfast. We came down at 9am. The scrambled egg tasted terrible. All the breakfast was cold. For this amount of money it was i feel this was very poor

Interesting stay. The common areas are lovely, although parts need better upkeep, for example there was rubbish under chairs in the upstairs seating area for over 12 hours. The breakfast is not worth the money, and the scrambled eggs were extremely salty to the point of being inedible, this was rectified and the guy hosting was helpful but it was obviously not a favourite as we were the only ones eating there. The room itself needed help. The bit we were put in felt like a hostel. Very much! Not fancy at all. Bathroom needed better cleaning and updating, there was a mini bar fridge switched off and mouldy! I couldn’t sleep well as the sheets were scratchy, pillows awful and the noise from others tvs very loud. Honestly I expected more from such a fabulous hotel location. Wouldn’t stay again.

Proximity to the Cathedral is great. The bar and restaurant seem to be in a transition with a new ordering, etc system but that should be transitory. Reception staff very helpful. Room very comfortable-in the heat it wasn’t possible to open windows wider and fan inadequate. I hope they invest in individual room AC units for future visits.

Waited over a hour for room, not ready at 1500hrs,got into room after 1600hrs. No hot water. The sausages were the best thing about the stay. Will never use this hotel again. Not worth two stars would take all stars away.

Some lights did not work, reverted to using the shower head from bath taps as wall shower head was unusable. So hot in the room as no a/c only a desk fan available, water bottles provided because of the heat (thank you)but could have been put in the fridge. Door chain did not fit to catch. Brandy served in a wine glass! We visited the hotel two years ago and sorry to say standards have dropped.

The bed was comfy but room had no AC and a large desk top fan and open window was deemed to solve the issue by the hotel! Not all the lights worked in the room. Luckily the bathroom one did work. The breakfast which the hotel think is amazing wasn't all that! It was buffet style but the scrambled eggs was microwaved and it showed and tasted dry. The bacon was very poorly cooked and was rubbery not remotely to the level you expect from a hotel kitchen! I had to search out one sole well done bit the rest was just rubbery! There appeared to be no cutlery station. I had to ask for some. The small butter packs had run out, had to ask for some. There was only white and brown sugar, I had to ask for sweetners. The diningroom attendent brought me personly two sachets after I reminded her having already asked earlier. I guess none for the rest of the guests would have liked that choice?
