Sand & Sandals Desaru Beach Resort & Spa

We went on a weekday so the place was almost empty which made the trip quite good, the hotel is well maintained and the beach access was the best part of it.

Pool needs maintainence.

The whole property , grounds and buildings , were all clean and immaculately kept . The staff were all friendly and very efficient . Meals were all excellent , including the breakfast buffet which had heaps of options . We were a little frustrated that there were " No beach swimming because of Jellyfish " signs up when several staff informed us that swimming was safe . However the swimming pools were a delight to use ! The mini golf was a waste of money as the " greens " were all concrete , and were uneven when hitting the ball making it impossible to line up a shot properly . Overall , we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sand and Sandals and would come back again .

Big swimming pool. Nice beach. Poolside bar. Rooftop lounge. Nice big rooms. Private balcony with small bathtub.

The place is so nice! Spacious and beautiful sea view! Only need more therapist at the space, currently only 1 so it’s difficult to do couple spa.

The hotel stay was ok. Rooms are spacious with beautiful seaview. Minus points are the restaurants. The Chinese restaurant service was really bad. Maybe due to lack of staff. Food came about an hr late and the dimsum was not served hot. The western restaurant’s lights were too dim that we have to use our phone’s torch to read the menu. Most of the arcade games are out of service. Golf is a little pricey and the hotel should upkeep and maintain it well.

Spacious rooms, nice pool for kids, little kids playgym, sumptuous hotel breakfast, close to beach.

The best part of this property is the access to the beach. Its somewhat a private beach for the property itself. The breakfast layout was good, with Live egg & Roti-Pratha counter. The staff is very helpful & polite to converse with. Although an old property but with its rustic look it even gets better. Will positively stay again whenever we visit Desaru next.

Resort is poorly maintained. Lots of things were broken for e.g. none of the bikes, e-bikes or recreational tools were working even though they had advertised them as available to hotel guests. Apparently the bikes have not been serviced since Covid so unsure why they have not taken the opportunity to fix them by now. The building had broken tiles and fixtures. Hot water wasn’t available for the first 24 hrs. The arcade game room had about a dozen games but only maybe 2 were working. The pillows were ridiculously thick and hard like rocks which gave us headaches. The buffet had a good variety of food but the rice dish often tasted uncooked (rice was hard). Some dishes were ok or good. The tea and coffee station were not refreshed daily. No sugar packets left in the container on day 1 of our stay and none on day 2. I knew they hadn’t refreshed it because there was the same trash in them that hadn’t been removed. Brown sugar packets were available but when I opened one the sugar was all mushy indicating they had been exposed to moisture. When I asked the staff to provide sugar, he handed me the spoiled ones. There was definitely a lack of care for quality and standards at this resort.

Room is extremely dirty. Water pipe leaking. Toilet dirty. Safe not working. Totally not a 5-star hotel as advertised.

The place is quite old and quiet, a pillow case has stain on it. There is a certain smell in the room when came in. Family suite is quite spacious. Foods are good.

Dirty, no wifi, looks like a place people goes for breakfast. Do not see happiness in this hotel

Pros 1. Access to beach although the beach is quite steep and not swimmable. Beach area has beach hut that's close proximity with one another 2. Variety of food for breakfast although most item such as bread section and the mains were minimally changed throughout our 4D3N stay. 3. Bed were clean when we arrived, everything required such as towels, mineral water, toiletries, sewing kit, iron and ironing board all provided. Cons 1. We booked two rooms for our stay paying RM3000 which is around SGD$$900 for interconnecting room facing the pool. I asked for a complimentary cake which normally hotels with the same rate we paid for would've provided us with a sliced cake at least complimentary. However Sand and Sandals sent us an email quoting me Half kg cake for Rm150, 1 kg cake for RM300 and RM30 for sliced cake. Such a turn off but we decided to give it a chance. 2. Breakfast for kids is chargeable at almost RM50 per day with us paying additional RM140 for the 3 days. 3. Housekeeping was bad..despite doing room cleaning, our rubbish bin was not cleared on second day. Floor still has stain marks means it was not mopped only swept. 4. The refrigerator has very strong unpleasant smell when we open it. 5. This is the worst part, we called housekeeping for additional mineral water and they took 4 hrs/3 calls to deliver them. I had to explain that I need it for my younger daughter who needs her milk and had ran out of clean water to drink before they have it delivered.

This is truly a nice sea side resort with all the amenities and activities for the family. The rooms are large, clean and in good working condition. Bedding and sheets are clean and comfortable. Buffet breakfast is a wide spread of mostly local food and restaurant Spices and Herbs served up good lamb shank. Overall, great for the family, good funal and lots of swimming and beach walks.

The room is spacious and clean. The facilities are well maintained. Staff is friendly and efficient. Breakfast spread is varied and good.Will definitely return to S&S in the future!

Rooms are clean and big. Breakfast was good with many choices but need improvement in re-filling and cleaning tables.

The internet or wifi is the worst that I have ever encounter with the hotel world wide as tmost of the time my mobile and computer cannot conect to their wifi system and even if connected, the network is very slow speed. The room are not fully clean when we check-in as can see some tissue behind the sink and shower area

We waited 3hrs to check in. Poor customer service. Upon checking in, extra bed was not ready (charged at RM130 prpn), room was dusty, lots of sand on the floor, the bed linens and towels got dirty stain marks. The rattan swing chair tumble down when my sister sat on it. Only to find out the base stand was not even and the screw was missing. Duty manager Koko was informed, however he did not turn up, no phone calls were made to check or ask if any medical assistance is needed during the fall. On the last night of our stay, I bump with Koko and ask him why he did not turn up when he received the feedback, he replied high occupancy and he was attending to other guest. We were informed by one of their staff that they have less than 15 manpower doing housekeeping managing 300rooms. So late check in is expected.

The water heater is not working very well, is cold water.

Extremely old and rundown resort! Many things are spoilt in the room and TV is not working. Reported to them on the first day and only sent technician to fix on the 2nd day night. Most of the times nobody pick up the phone when you called for service from the room. They employed foreign workers at the hotel reception who can't speak and understand English well, have hard time to communicate. The resort was flooded after rain and have to walk with barefoot as your feet and shoe will be soaked in water. They only give 1 small tube of shower gel and shampoo for one day. We have to buy it from outside. Terrible experience and don't recommend anyone to stay in this property if you want an enjoyable holiday in Desaru!

The resort is very quiet (not sure if it's due to low season and my checking in on a Wednesday night). The private beach is very good, quiet and only 1-2 pax around. The whole resort is quiet. For people who likes it peaceful and quiet, this is nice. The disappointment is in the TV (not working, zero channels working after technician troubleshoot for 10mins). This should have been avoided by ensuring simple things like TV is working well before guests arrival. The kettle in the room has a loose handle that could break off under the weight of a full jug. Hotel offered to change my room but I declined to save the hassle. Hope they can rectify these items for the next guest. Room 236. Breakfast spread is not the luxurious type but is adequate with strong local and nonya flavours, I am happy with it. The coffee and tea and juice needs improvement, though. The private beach makes up for everything. Overall, I am happy with it. 8 of 10.

Enjoyable experience for my family of three. Just one minus point is the hard pillow, my husband and I couldn't sleep with it. We need to use the towel as pillow instead.

Wifi in my room was not stable, hope it can be improved

Great place for a short retreat however the place could use some upgrade and a bit more elderly friendly like install bathroom / toilet handle bars and improve overall facade and facilities of the property. It sure could use a new paint job. The Airconditioning was very noisy at night and maintenance told us they need to change parts, so was a bit uncomfortable sleeping (due to noise)

The room is sound proof though there is live music at night. Once the balcony door is closed, we hardly hear the music. The room is very spacious and good for kids to move around. Bathroom is huge. The pool view is breathtaking! Only one thing that can be improved is the air conditioning. Air con is not so cold. Not sure if it's because the room is big. I wish I had informed the front desk to look into it or change room but my spouse is not keen. Overall, will recommend to others and come back again.

Nice room overlooking the pool and can see the waves pounding on the beach. Could hear the nice sound of the waves.

Great service, great Japanese food.

Hotel staff were kind enough to help me jumpstart my car when the battery went flat.

This has been the worst and most ridiculous check-in experience i have experienced in my life. We reserved a bus to pick us up from the ferry terminal to the resort weeks before our arrival but when we arrived, the bus was nowhere to be found. After contacting the hotel multiple times, a small bus arrived about an hour late from our agreed upon timing. When the bus finally came however, other hotel guests that did not their reserve their seats beforehand and rushed up the bus that arrived. The resort bus driver did not bother verifying who actually has made a reservation for the private bus and just left with whoever managed to squeezed onto the bus. At that point, around 10 guests with families and children (including us) that has email proof that we have booked the buses were not able to get on the bus. The bus driver just shrugged and left the ferry terminal, leaving us stranded there again even though we have called the resort multiple times and waited an hour for the bus to arrive. We had to try calling our own taxi there and luckily we got one in less than half an hour later All of the other resorts had their buses arrived on time so only the guests from this resort were left stranded in the ferry terminal for an extended amount of time, wasting time. No actual apologies or compensation were provided by the resort for this fiasco other than a cursory email apology. The resort itself is also rather run-down and wild monkeys will occasionally appear in the hallways.

Everything was good. thank you ! Great move to let 113 triathlon event to checkout once the event ended at 430pm. Will definitely stay here again for 2026 113 Desaru triathlon if this keeps up.

The resort was nice because of the beachfront and amenities. The food in the restaurant was also good especially the Teppanyaki resto. It has very spacious room that you can move conveniently and walk around. During my checkin/checkout the front desk staff was kind and helpful. The disappointing part is the housekeeping management that really need to improve. I booked for 2 nights/3days for 3 pax. On my Day 2 when I came back to the room in late afternoon, there was no housekeeping/cleaning done and no toiletries supplies replenishment. When i requested for shower gel, shampoo, toothpaste towel supplies, it took me 3 hours waiting with 5 follow up calls which was very frustrating. When i received the items, the supplies was for 2 pax only and the housekeeping staff said that was the instruction he received. I didnt ask anymore as i worry it will take hours again before they respond.

Greeted our arrival by very polite & friendly staff, Amirah . Room is very spacious & nice layout. Will come back again next time with son's family. Toilet : very good . Lighting : a bit dim. Breakfast : very good with wide spread of variety choices.

Decent property. Breakfast options are limited especially for vegan and vegetarians. Room I stayed had issues with power supply but the staff was quick to restore. Laid back environment.

I like the fake creepers wrapped around pillars and covered the ceilings. Very nice touch. This time we got a very clean room with strong air-con. Breakfast buffet spread have a good variety and taste good but one let fown is the coffee. Need to improve the quality of the coffee. Service staff are very polite, cheerful and helpful.

The room was great, property was quiet, live band was great. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back again. The western food at the restaurant was good, we had the lobster special. The local food wasnt up to our expectation. Could do better. The waiters need to be better trained as some of them didnt seem to know what was available or not. Eg. We wanted freshly brewed coffee and tea, but was told it was not available. Later we found out that it was available at an additional cost. Regardless, the waiters tried their best and were very polite. Appreciate the service from all staff.
