This hotel calls itself 4-star, but in my opinion it is closer to 2-star. The whole property feels old, tired and outdated, with a confusing layout and poor signage. Service was almost non-existent. My room was not cleaned despite leaving the sign on the door, and the next morning I waited nearly 10 minutes at reception without anyone appearing. Breakfast was appalling. Nobody came to seat me, despite the sign asking guests to wait. The orange juice tasted heavily diluted, the scrambled eggs seemed powdered, sausages were burnt and the bacon tasted reheated. The room was equally dated: stained carpet, ancient TV, no proper desk and no complimentary water. I had to move the TV just to make space for my laptop. The mattress and pillows were extremely hard and uncomfortable, and I did not have a single good night's sleep. I was advised not to eat at the restaurant, so I ordered takeaway instead. I later found information from official sources indicating that the hotel is going into liquidation, which may explain the condition and lack of staff. However, guests are still paying to stay here. I cannot understand how this can realistically be considered a 4-star hotel. Very disappointing. I definitely will not return.

I travelled from Cambridge to Shrigley Hall to attend a 2 day business pharmaceutical conference in Macclesfield, then a conference dinner at same hotel. I had booked and paid for a higher standard of room but in room 274, which I was assigned, I was unable to sleep at all even when using earplugs due to the noise vibration levels of ~ 60db. The room also had an unfixed toilet seat, a broken window handle (could not be closed firm) and a sink with no plug. Due to Shrigley Hall not being able to move me to another room when I spoke to reception at 2am, I was awake for 33hrs which is a health and safety issue. I had expected a full refund after talking to staff which, after my depature, was declined. Due to the lack of sleep in the first night, I had to leave the conference early the following day due to impaired judgement and I was unable to attend the business dinner that evening too due to fatigue. The event has turned out to be a complete waste of my time and effort and at my company's expense due to a failure in the hotels duty of care. Please take heed - I have travelled internationally for business for 30 years and I do not recommend this hotel and will be relaying my dissapointment to the event organisers.

Good points - Loved the outdoor hydro pool, there was a cat at the front entrance that wanted cuddles. They are the good points. Honestly, this hotel looks like it may have been nice in the 1970s, it was a very long walk to my room along threadbare carpets, marked corridors, random old furniture stacked in corners, damaged doors etc. my room was so terrible I didn’t even take off my coat, I just wheeled my case straight back out of there! The bed itself had the most horrible huge brown stain on the side of it. Whether it was vomit, poop, or ‘just’ coffee, we may never know but it was enough to make the guy on the desk facepalm, apologise profusely and give me one of their recently decorated rooms instead. The new room was lovely and decorated to a high standard but the bathroom was still from the 90’s perhaps? I was very grateful for being moved, if they hadn’t been able to accommodate me I would have had to stay elsewhere, Shrigley is well and truly struck off my list!
