A beautiful part of Cornwall to escape to for the weekend. The Lugger is in an amazing location - very quaint Cornish fishing cove. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, however we paid for an upgrade to deluxe but felt the room was still quite standard. There is room for improvement- eg lighting the fire in lounge area on a winters night and not using the entrance to main accommodation as storage area for the house keeping staff. We loved staying here but did feel it was overpriced for what you got.

We really liked the hotel and the breakfast and staff were lovely. They couldn't do enough for you. Location nothing there not even a shop to walk to felt really isolated and the weather didn't help. Rained for 2 days and had to park at the top of the hill got soaked

One of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. The staff are amazing. The food was amazing. The facilities were amazing and it is in a stunning location. Not for everyone though as it is very quiet. At least it is in December. We hope to return one day.

Lovely old coastal inn. Room small and cosy overlooking the slipway. Evening dinner was good but moderately pricey for wine. Breakfast was excellent and consumed at a very leisurely pace with lovely views. The hotel is on the coast path so beautiful walks for the more energetic. Parking free immediately behind hotel

The Lugger is located in a small fishing village. The village is charming with renovated historic buildings and lovely gardens. There are no shops and just 2 restaurants in the village - the restaurant in The Lugger (excellent!) and The Ship Inn (authentic and good). The hotel restaurant has lovely views of the sea, with indoor and outdoor seating. It's nice to just spend the afternoon with a drink and take the sea view and quiet in. There is also a cozy lounge attached to the dining area. The location is perfect for walking the coastal path, napping and reading. If you wish to travel to other locations in either the surrounding area (beaches) or in Cornwall, a car is a must. You can travel there by train to Truro and take a taxi for about $50. The staff was lovely and helpful.

Beautiful location. Lovely staff, delicious breakfast. Clean comfy rooms. Something to note is Uber or similar services are not permitted in the area. We needed a taxi to Truro and all local firms were booked so had to drive. We’d already had a drink in the bar before we realised this, thankfully not enough to be unable to drive but if we had that would have ruined our plans. Also worth mentioning is that a 25 min taxi ride when we got one the following day was £50. We will return to The Lugger but just to enjoy the hotel and immediate location, not when needing to venture away.

The Lugger is a wonderful little hotel. An extremely warm welcome with the rarity of the being shown to your a nice touch. An even nicer touch is the turn-down service which includes a hot water bottle and chocolates. The room had everything I needed. A fridge with milk and water was very welcome. A generous fruit bowl was also a thoughtful touch. The general impression is that the hotel genuinely takes care to ensure guests feel welcome and have all they need. Clean and cosy,the room was a pleasure to stay in.

Although rated as a 5 star I struggle to see how. Hotel is in a stunning location, there is nothing around it but coast path which was fine for us as that is what we wanted but might put others off. Hotel looked tired in lots of areas, the communal areas seems unkempt and a little grubby, little things around that shouldn’t be such as the half eaten sandwich left outside our room was a good example. Looks like it needs an update for sure, lots of chipping paint and a grubby carpets. It’s not made clear that if you have a terrace room it’s a shared terrace with a few other rooms so didn’t feel at all private, especially as this is also on the road into the hotel too. The shower was dreadfully weak, cracked tiles in the bathroom floor and just looking tired, could hear everything the room upstairs was doing, especially their alarm at 6:30 in the morning…. No robes as stated, pillows are very uncomfortable and hard. Overall it was just ok. We didn’t eat in the restaurant in then end, mainly as it was Easter Sunday and apparently the chef hadn’t done the menu even up to the night before but then it turned out to be the same as the other nights so that was confusing. Breakfast was ok but small. This place could be amazing with a few tweaks and a good general manager with some attention to detail but sadly lacking in my eyes.

Stayed for Valentine’s which included dinner (up to £40 Per Person) & breakfast. Main was ok but monkfish over cooked & pork under ( fat not rendered enough). They offered to take the fish main off the bill which was £32, as not finished & mentioned not the best. When we checked out the £32 was not put towards the drinks bill but as other than this we had a nice time & staff were great we never said anything. Overall good with great staff & fantastic breakfast. I would say could do with some updating in external areas but still enjoyed our stay!

Very nice room and clean towels every day. Liked having the little fridge for fresh milk and water. Staff were friendly and helpful.Meals were very good and plenty of choice. The area was beautiful for scenery and walking which we enjoyed. Would love to return oneday in the future.

A small and friendly hotel, set in a rural, coastal position , away from it all. Old building tastefully redecorated , room was nice with a decent bathroom. Excellent view of the coastal inlet. Caught a glimpse of the local fisherman launching and returning in the morning , right under our window Only negative was the bed, for such a highly priced room, I would expect bigger and better comfort - breakfast was ok

We spent a night in Portloe and were impressed with the location of the Lugger and the kindness of the check-in staff, who helped us get into our room a bit early so that we could dress for an event. After booking a 260-pound room at a quaint B&B, I was surprised when we were asked if we wanted to pay another 18 pounds for the very simple breakfast they set out in the mornings. Our room was in the back of the second building, so our only small window was about two feet from the next building, and our bed faced the bathroom door. I understand you can't always get the room with the view, but the rooms are nothing special on the backside. I would normally hope a 5-star hotel would have a few nice details, like a cart for the drinks so you're not balancing the kettle on the bedside table, or a nespresso machine rather than two instant coffee packets. Overall, it's a lovely stopover, but I'd only return if they offered a steep discount and promised a bit of a view.

Very mixed thoughts about our stay at the Lugger! Obviously a beautiful location, the food was good… but… The Lugger is charging premium prices!! Our de-luxe room was very small and stiflingly hot with the view of a wall. Apart from one lady who was very efficient and kept the whole ship afloat, I’m afraid the staff were woefully inadequate. One waitress was so unresponsive and unfriendly it had to be experienced to be believed. This was not the experience I was expecting having read previous reviews… perhaps we were just unlucky but we would be reluctant to return.

Excellent hotel with friendly, accommodating staff for whom nothing is too much trouble. Lovely comfortable rooms and a superlative dining experience - definitely our treat of the trip!! Can thoroughly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amazing and totally beautiful location. The Lookout room is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of life. I can't praise it enough.

Really nice stay in a wonderful location. Small team of focussed people that seem to enjoy what they do, and made me feel at home. The rooms are well appointed, and the beds comfortable. The food was excellent.
Really nice stay in a wonderful location. Small team of focussed people that seem to enjoy what they do, and made me feel at home. The rooms are well appointed, and the beds comfortable. The food was excellent.

Fabulous location, beautiful hotel and a lovely room with sea view. However, the dining room, facilitated by inexperienced "teenagers" was unacceptable for a 5 star establishment. We originally intended to eat in the hotel for the duration of our 4-night stay but after the first night experience and despite there being no other options locally, we decided to drive 8 miles, rather than eat there again.

Very mixed thoughts about our stay at the Lugger! Obviously a beautiful location, the food was good… but… The Lugger is charging premium prices!! Our de-luxe room was very small and stiflingly hot with the view of a wall. Apart from one lady who was very efficient and kept the whole ship afloat, I’m afraid the staff were woefully inadequate. One waitress was so unresponsive and unfriendly it had to be experienced to be believed. This was not the experience I was expecting having read previous reviews… perhaps we were just unlucky but we would be reluctant to return.

The location is quite exceptional. We watched dolphins as we sat on the restaurant terrace. We stayed in the Look Out which whilst small has amazing views and we would definitely ask for that room again when we return. The food is very good and reasonably priced for the quality on offer. I would suggest that staff training could be improved. There was one lady who appeared to be in charge of service in the dining room who was very friendly and good. However the team around her fall along way short of the standard that she delivered.

Although rated as a 5 star I struggle to see how. Hotel is in a stunning location, there is nothing around it but coast path which was fine for us as that is what we wanted but might put others off. Hotel looked tired in lots of areas, the communal areas seems unkempt and a little grubby, little things around that shouldn’t be such as the half eaten sandwich left outside our room was a good example. Looks like it needs an update for sure, lots of chipping paint and a grubby carpets. It’s not made clear that if you have a terrace room it’s a shared terrace with a few other rooms so didn’t feel at all private, especially as this is also on the road into the hotel too. The shower was dreadfully weak, cracked tiles in the bathroom floor and just looking tired, could hear everything the room upstairs was doing, especially their alarm at 6:30 in the morning…. No robes as stated, pillows are very uncomfortable and hard. Overall it was just ok. We didn’t eat in the restaurant in then end, mainly as it was Easter Sunday and apparently the chef hadn’t done the menu even up to the night before but then it turned out to be the same as the other nights so that was confusing. Breakfast was ok but small. This place could be amazing with a few tweaks and a good general manager with some attention to detail but sadly lacking in my eyes.

Lovely old coastal inn. Room small and cosy overlooking the slipway. Evening dinner was good but moderately pricey for wine. The Lugger is located in a small fishing village. The village is charming with renovated historic buildings and lovely gardens. There are no shops and just 2 restaurants in the village - the restaurant in The Lugger (excellent!) and The Ship Inn (authentic and good). The hotel restaurant has lovely views of the sea, with indoor and outdoor seating. It's nice to just spend the afternoon with a drink and take the sea view and quiet in. There is also a cozy lounge attached to the dining area. The location is perfect for walking the coastal path, napping and reading. If you wish to travel to other locations in either the surrounding area (beaches) or in Cornwall, a car is a must. You can travel there by train to Truro and take a taxi for about $50. The staff was lovely and helpful.

Beautiful location. Lovely staff, delicious breakfast. Clean comfy rooms. Something to note is Uber or similar services are not permitted in the area. We needed a taxi to Truro and all local firms were booked so had to drive. We’d already had a drink in the bar before we realised this, thankfully not enough to be unable to drive but if we had that would have ruined our plans. Also worth mentioning is that a 25 min taxi ride when we got one the following day was £50. We will return to The Lugger but just to enjoy the hotel and immediate location, not when needing to venture away.

Stayed for Valentine’s which included dinner (up to £40 Per Person) & breakfast. Main was ok but monkfish over cooked & pork under ( fat not rendered enough). They offered to take the fish main off the bill which was £32, as not finished & mentioned not the best. When we checked out the £32 was not put towards the drinks bill but as other than this we had a nice time & staff were great we never said anything. Overall good with great staff & fantastic breakfast. I would say could do with some updating in external areas but still enjoyed our stay!

Gorgeous location and room. Breakfast was amazing. The only thing I would recommend is to email guests before the stay to book a table for food as couldn’t eat there which was shame. However the pub up the lane was amazing.

A lovely hotel in an idyllic spot - our room was a deluxe and looked over the little harbour, spectacular to see the tide coming in and out all day (and night of course!). Food was fine - breakfasts especially good - and we tried the Cornish wines which were just OK. If in doubt stick with the french for the moment, but they're improving all the time. We had a lovely weekend away, the only stress being the trip to and from the mainroads - you don't want to meet anyone coming the other way!

Overall really loved the Hotel. Lovely view from our room over the bay. The staff were really lovely and helpful. One problem we did have was the menu shown on the website has obviously not been brought up to date. Before visiting we had chosen what we wanted from the online menu (which also stated a 10% surcharge) only to find a completely different menu on arrival with a 12.5 % surcharge. Having arrived after a long journey I ended up having a bowl of soup! This may be useful for future visitors as nowhere else to eat locally. The breakfast, however, was perfect.
Overall really loved the Hotel. Lovely view from our room over the bay. The staff were really lovely and helpful. One problem we did have was the menu shown on the website has obviously not been brought up to date. Before visiting we had chosen what we wanted from the online menu (which also stated a 10% surcharge) only to find a completely different menu on arrival with a 12.5 % surcharge. Having arrived after a long journey I ended up having a bowl of soup! This may be useful for future visitors as nowhere else to eat locally. The breakfast, however, was perfect.
