Crown & Mitre Hotel

The room was tiny and the sash windows rattled in the wind. We had to wedge them with paper. The pool was closed for maintenance. We were not advised of this in advance.

Central location. Beautiful historic decor. Great pool and hot tub. Limited parking with few free options as alternatives.

Poor service at reception, took 20 minutes to get someone to open the gate for the car park.

Booked as listed with EV charging. On arrival was told the car park was full and had to pay to park in a local public car park.

Our first issue was finding the car park. Yes it is small, but it's gated so very secure. The post code we were given, tried to take us down a pedestrian street. After 25 minutes, 3 circuits of Carlisles one way systems and instructions from the concierge, we finally made it. The parking directions could definitely be more clearer. The Edwardian features are noticeable from the moment you walk through the door. From the sweeping staircase, to the high ceilings, and large fireplaces. Our room was a nice size, more amenities than you need, aside from the pigeon sat on our window ledge, the room was quiet. The buffet breakfast had a nice selection, you are given your own pot of tea, or coffee and as the milk and sugar etc are provided on each table, there isn't very many people wander around, only those topping up their plate. My only complaints are that we booked a king-size room, which had 2 single beds pushed together, except one of the latches was broken and if you sat/ lay in the wrong place on the bed, the beds started to move apart and that's not great when it's 3am. There's a gap between the bed and the wall, which is just the right size to loose your pillows down. Lastly, the room looked very clean, carpet too, until I knealt on the carpet it black jeans and the fluff, dust and human hairs attached to shins of my jeans, it wasn't great at all.

Another stay at this fine centrally located hotel. Great room , clean and comfortable and quiet ( apart from other door slamming morons). The pool and hot tub are a bonus. It was a tad chilly in the room though.

Overall we had a good stay. Great points: Comfy beds, excellent customer service, excellent breakfast. Swimming pool and jacuzzi. Not so great bits: full car park, only two EV car chargers and one of them had been “ICE’d”, i.e. internal combustion engine car blocking the charger.

A wee overnight stay in the Borders , Carlisle is a lovely place to wander round the historic buildings and charity shops and a few antique ones too. Not to mention the pubs and restaurants all within easy access from the Crown and Mitre. Lovey old hotel which is going through a wee clean and repair at the moment.Which ment the swimming pool was closed .But in all, a lovely hotel and the staff were all fantastic knowledgeable and professional.

The hotel was dated, our room a little shabby (torn curtains, stained carpets and furnishings, old bathroom and cobwebs). For the price, definitely not value for money

The room was very clean and comfortable. The Crown and Mitre is a traditional hotel so can seem a bit old fashioned I suppose, but on the plus side you get a quiet soundproof room and a good sized bath in the bathroom. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we will definitely stay there again.

Hotel was very clean generally and room was also very clean. Staff were helpful and polite. Pool and jaccuzi is nice addition. Location is right in the middle of the city centre with loads of Restaurants nearby..

Good location in the centre of town, hotel building was nice and our room was very comfortable and clean. We were in the annexe, which was a bit noisy from lorries early in the morning, and some odd noises from the plumbing, but overall a good stay.

We arrived at check in time and couldn’t check in until 2 hours later. Room was not clean. Could see spiders and bugs everywhere. Bathroom didn’t have hand soap. Hotel is super old and looks like it’s going to fall apart

Room 205 over the kitchen service area. Radio blaring and loud conversations from early morning. Bathroom was grimy with dirty grout and dirty round plug holes. Will not stay here again.

Very central traditional hotel,nice room, which was less and smelled fresh, lovely fluffy towels, parking great once we found it. Maggie on reception directed us via phone. Shame about the odour from kitchen (fried food) which was very apparent on the staircase and corridors. Pool lovely even though on the small side. Breakfast adequate and tasty but lacked choice of cold items. Didn’t eat in the restaurant menu looked good but there was no atmosphere. It was empty. But if we stayed again would give it a try.

Booked hotel for 2 nights when checking room pillows were filthy snd stained and matress protector changed rooms sgain pillows and bedding dirty and stained moved to 3rd room again pillows filthy and protector on bed badly stained snd marked ended up moving to another hotel so spoilt weekend

I was quite disappointed with my stay. The breakfast was terrible — very limited options and not appetizing at all. The room wasn’t comfortable; I could hear the neighbors talking and even snoring through the walls. The bed was hard and uncomfortable, and to make things worse, the noise from the birds outside kept me up most of the night. Overall, not a pleasant experience and I wouldn’t stay here again. The good thing about the hotel was the location, at the heart of Carlisle.

Nice overall property, right in the centre of the city, quaint historic charm, married with modern rooms.

It's all about the location… Location in the heart of the city is wonderful, adjacent to the shops, a short walk from the nightlife of Botchergate, and also walkable are the railway and bus stations. This is a traditional hotel and this shows in the décor and ambience of the building, parts of which are showing signs of the years of wear and tear by guests. The reception team gave me a warm and friendly welcome and found my way to my allocated room through some nicely decorated corridors and stairways. Frustratingly my attempts to open the bedroom door (with a time-honoured metal key) failed and a return to reception was required, the team did manage to access the room for me after numerous attempts; this though summed up the levels of frustration and disappointments that I experienced with the room. The Executive Single Room was no more than a small box room which you ‘could not swing a cat’ within, though having a larger than normal single bed, this was worn out, had uncomfortable mattress, unsupportive pillows and thin duvet, so did not aid a restful nights sleep. The desk was so small you had little room to move a mouse next to your laptop, the Wi-Fi was very unreliable in terms of connectivity and the television belonged in the Carlisle Museum as an artefact. Breakfast was not offered so was unsure whether it was available at the out-of-season time of year of the stay. Overall a disappointing and frustrating stay which could, and should, have been so much better.

Historic hotel with character. Unfortunately our room was near the kitchen and very noisy early and late since we needed windows open because no AC. Showers were a challenge to figure out which resulted in some cold surprises!

Great location and room was okay. Pleasant hotel and would recommend for overnight stay. It was a little noisy.

The hotel, has a lovely reception and quite grand, the bar area quite cosy too, the reception process to check in a little slow, I was told I was in a refurbed room, quite nice twin room with a new TV and looks like some new chairs / paint, the bathroom it looked like they forgot to renovate still looks like the previous one, it was clean and tidy, but room 117 is right beside an alley and you can hear everyone go through it during the night so hard to sleep, also the walls between the rooms are quite thin, the hotel has a small pool and jacuzzi, i think I would be in two minds to stay here again

The hotel must have been a very grand building in it's hay-day. It has been kept to reflect the art deco style of the interiors. I had an executive single room, which was a bit of a 'push' in the description. After saying that, although the room was quite small, it was amplbig enough to fit in a double (3/4 ?) bed, a desk, a decent set of drawers and a built in double wardrobe. It was, a little lacking in paintings on the walls, which would have made the room a little more welcoming, but it was warm, comfortable and quite pleasant in it's own right. At the price I paid, (£45 on an offer. I believe it should have been £54, full price), it is an excellent base to discover the town, particularly the Cathedral (next door !) and the Castle a short walk away. The staff were pleasant and courtious and nice to chat to. It's somewhere I would stay again.

Nice comfortable room the only negative is the heavy spring on the doors which meant I was awakened early by other guests being. Inconsiderate & banging their doors

Another stay at C&M and it was a warm comfortable hotel and the pool is great. The room was clean, tidy and comfortable. Breakfast is a good spread with hot items cooked to order. The only downside was the fire alarm going off at 01.30! That sort of time really wakes me up and sleep again fitful. It would have been welcome to have received a proactive apology instead of reactive at check out. It seems to have been caused by a guest smoking in the room? It was told “it won’t happen again”. The Market Square in front of the hotel is having a makeover but does not cause any great inconvenience. Good that investment is being spent in the city. Overall a good stay in a hotel centrally located with character.

I emailed the hotel a few days prior to our stay and asked them if they could put a bottle of champagne and balloons in the room as it was my husbands birthday and I wanted to surprise him. They emailed back and said that wouldn’t be a problem and they would see to it. When we arrived there was nothing in the room. I enquired at reception and they said they had no note of any special request. I showed them the email correspondence and was met with a blank look and a bland apology. Otherwise the hotel is ‘ok’, clean and quite comfortable but the walls are like paper. You can hear everything!

Special mention to receptionist to Kelly who was a superstar, after a little bit of stressful situation with car parking this was easily resolved when Kelly gave directions to myself on how to gain access to the car parking on site. Kelly is a assett to the company, please pass this onto her, thank you :)

I really enjoyed my stay at the Crown and Mitre Hotel in Carlisle. The building itself is full of character, with beautiful historic charm and a warm atmosphere that makes you feel welcome from the start. The staff were friendly and attentive, always ready to help and provide recommendations. My room was spacious and comfortable, and I appreciated the little touches that made it feel inviting. The location is excellent, right in the heart of the city, making it easy to explore Carlisle on foot. Overall, a lovely experience — I’d happily stay here again.

Everybody at the front desk exceptionally polite and professional. A huge thank you to you all for being so kind. I would also say this that the breakfast staff were exceptionally polite and incredibly kind you have some superb employees. Great location

Due to road works and construction in the street out front, it was difficult to find a park to check in.

It’s a cool hotel on the interior of a little dated. There is construction happening in the pedestrian area out front so it was a bit noisy.

Older, Victorian-type hotel. Even though the car park is right behind the hotel, it can’t be accessed directly, only be by making a big circle through the city center. We literally went around in circles for about one hour, since Carlisle is an old city and the street plan is complicated. This may be temporary due to a street closure in front of the hotel, and probably the hotel can’t do anything about it, but wished we had come by train instead of car.

Construction everywhere. The entire street was blocked off. Very difficult n frustrating arriving

Beautiful building in the centre of town. Clean and comfortable but a little dated. Vehicle access was rather difficult due to the town’s roads.

Great location to stay right in the centre of town and basically next to the Cathedral area. Room was comfortable and nicely appointed. We had dinner in the bar, very friendly staff and decent food. Breakfast in he morning was equally nice - it is a beautiful old building and these areas were lovely. For us also useful that it had parking included. A very nice play to stay in Carlisle.

Staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel is right between the 900 year old cathedral and the castle. Bars and restaurants are 5 minutes walk.

Location is amazing so happy we booked this. It has the wow factor when you enter. Bar very nice. Everywhere very clean. Breakfast wasn’t great, wouldn’t get again.

Despite a bit of a problem finding the car park because of the redevelopment, the staff were extremely helpful in guiding me. Excellent fish and chips in the bar. Well done.

It was difficult to access the car park due to road works and remodelling at the front of the hotel. However what was being undertaken it will be an excellent pedestrian and event area the rooms were comfortable and well appointed. The staff were friendly and helpful the food was of a high standard. The hotel room was clean and spacious, the bath and shower were clean but the bathroom was a little dated. The breakfast in the morning was nice and the staff kept it topped up however the service was a little slow and if you asked for something it was a while before the staff would come back to you with it, EG milk. The “continental” breakfast was next to nothing bar some options for cereals and one or two pastries. I wouldn’t let it put me off tho as the location of the hotel was ideal and it was quiet during the night. The bells on the Sunday morning were horrendous tho they went on far too long but I realise this is out with the control of the hotel.
