Stayed in a lodge during August 24, family of four. Fine for a cheap air bnb but no way a five star experience. lodge accommodation was well past its best and in need of reinvestment. Dated decor and furniture. Curtains falling off, dirty net curtain with holes in, old school dirty and broken Venetian blinds, stale cigarette smoke, very limited equipment for cooking, tiny tv with a dvd player, said there was chrome cast but didn’t work despite asking. Whole lodge was uncomfortably hot as hot water boilers on all the time, but yet the towel rads couldn’t be turned on so wet towels. Cleaners come twice a week - so in a 7 night stay they came day 3 and then final day - what’s the point? In short just lots and lots and of small things that led to a feeling of disappointment, especially at £650 a night. Pool has seen better days and was rammed - not manned so kids just doing what they want. Only went once despite it being what the kids wanted to do most. Both restaurants hugely disappointing especially given sky high prices. Poor service and poor food which features in many other reviews. Nice areas to relax in throughout the hotel, but staff impossible to find to get drinks etc. Complained to the team onsite who were kind enough to offer some money off, but still disappointing and feel I’ve wasted money. The archery and falconry were great, albeit expensive, but very good experience with brilliant people running them which was one saving grace. Avoid.

Beautiful location and surroundings. For the price, I expected it to be quite high end and they’re trying to be but don’t quite make it. Room smelt of baby sick on arrival so that a huge disappointment. I think they really lack good, quality staff but it is in the middle of nowhere so maybe tough to get good people. Service is slow, food took sooo long to come out. Gym is like a dungeon, dirty, dark, poor equipment and too small. Pool area was lovely. Room and views were awesome on the whole.

Very nice hotel with lots of good activities. The food was good and the hotel itself very nice. The only comments I would make was the service was pretty terrible in the bar and lounge area, slow not too friendly and I had to ask 3 times where my order was, no real apology. The spa is nice but the pool area very dated.

Food was lovely. Breakfast varied with hot options cooked to order. Dinners at both restaurants very nice but overpriced for what they are. Service very good across the hotel. Cleanliness very good in all parts of hotel. Spa treatments were amazing using TempleSpa products. Lovely grounds. Swimming pool cold and whirlpool area not heated.

Our stay at this hotel was lovely. There were a few issues with our bath and window but the staff arranged for an alternative room to be made available for us. Both rooms were very well appointed. The weather outside was poor but the reception rooms in the hotel were decorated beautifully and kept warm with lively open fires and we enjoyed refreshing drinks and tasty snacks. Our meals in the restaurants, served by friendly, polite, attentive staff, looked lovely and tasted even better. The spa facilities were excellent a good sized pool with hot sauna and steam rooms that were not overcrowded. It was a shame the falconer had to cancel because their eagle was unwell but we were invited back at another time to meet them and their birds. The minor issues that we experienced were dealt with so well by the staff, it left us definitely wanting to return. The staff working here were a real credit to the hotel.

Hotel is just what you thought it would be a stately castle. Grounds are impeccable and walking around is breathtaking. The bar is fully stocked with all types of gin/whisky and scotch. Pool is big and the spa just beautiful. Defiantly go back to this hotel!!

Lovely setting, gardens are great and great building. Few things spoilt it beinv great. The golf carts make a horrid whine when reversing. If you are in a front room is awefully disturbing. The swimming pool has the most noisey pumps and basically means you cannot relax so forget the spa experience. Pillows in our room were terrible. I asked for replacements of s different style snd got more of the same. Staff were friendly but seemed totally untrained in the posh restaurant. Both were new, didnt know what the food was and didnt tio up wine during either meal we hsd despite psssing our table lots and it not being busy. Food was good mainly though pricey as you would expect. Recommend the steak tartare delicious

Staff were amazing, the place itself is beautiful. Only feedback would be the spa could do with a touch up. Re paint, tiles missing in the pool, sauna as broken seat.

Excellent place for a weekend or mid-week getaway. Lots of walks in woods and along river; dog friendly. Swimming pool, tennis, croquet, boule and a huge golf course. There are many other (paid) pursuits, i.e. archery, air rifles, off road driving and even falconry. It is an historic country house hotel with comfortable rooms, quiet corners and two restaurants with bars. Also family lodges in the tree area beside the main building.

This is a beautiful place and a wonderful setting and the levels of service were significantly better than when I stayed here a couple of years ago as they have clearly staffed up since then. Couple of irritating things - £25 to use the EV charger - ridiculous, breakfast is still a bit of a shambles organisationally and you pay £28 a head for this privilege !

Booked a valley castle room w king bed for one night in late Sep. Room was very clean with comfy n up to date decor. Room was big enough and soundproof quality was good. Big garden surrounded hotel n we took a pleasant walk the next day. Should have stayed for one or two nights so as to enjoy swimming pool and other facilities. The historical building was well maintained. Very pleasant stay

Beautiful setting in a lovely building. However for a 5 star hotel the room/bathroom fittings were not in tip top condition. The restaurant service was good but not excellent- we seemed to be being served by more than one waiter and asked for our order after it had already been taken. Food was good but steak slightly overcooked- hence only 4/5

Arrival was confusing with the valet parking, it wasn’t clear. Our afternoon tea wasn’t served where we were told it would be, so wandered up and down trying to find it. Room was large and bed comfy, but mould all over the bathroom ceiling and had to request a fan as it wasn’t possible to reduce the room temperature. Also, window catch broken on one window. Pool nice and large but the pool area was a bit shabby and tired in places. Issues reported to reception on leaving but no further contact on any of them. Beautiful location and liked the fact they draw and treat their own water from the river for baths etc. but won’t be back.

Restaurant and staff were excellent. Rooms were mediocre - tv barely worked, little to no hot water, drains worked slowly. Tho was supposed to be a premium room too. Way too expensive for the poor quality.

Room was beautiful very clean,staff couldn’t do enough and our dog was also welcomed by all the staff which is amazing especially in a 5 star hotel.The grounds and mansion are stunning .We can not recommend enough and for sure will be back in future

Mixed feelings. Parts of the hotel experience live up the 5* ranking others didn’t. The restaurant was amazing; food and service superb and generally the staff and standards were great, not necessarily exceptional though. Our bedroom, whilst serviced, wasn’t resupplied and fruit left overs remained for the entirety of our stay. Checking out. Our bill was in error by several hundred £ with double billing and simple errors. Over £150 of service fees had been added for one evening meal and drinks on two occasions in the bar…

Booked a valley castle room w king bed for one night in late Sep. Room was very clean with comfy n up to date decor. Room was big enough and soundproof quality was good. Big garden surrounded hotel n we took a pleasant walk the next day. Should have stayed for one or two nights so as to enjoy swimming pool and other facilities. The historical building was well maintained. Very pleasant stay

Stayed in a lodge during August 24, family of four. Fine for a cheap air bnb but no way a five star experience. lodge accommodation was well past its best and in need of reinvestment. Dated decor and furniture. Curtains falling off, dirty net curtain with holes in, old school dirty and broken Venetian blinds, stale cigarette smoke, very limited equipment for cooking, tiny tv with a dvd player, said there was chrome cast but didn’t work despite asking. Whole lodge was uncomfortably hot as hot water boilers on all the time, but yet the towel rads couldn’t be turned on so wet towels. Cleaners come twice a week - so in a 7 night stay they came day 3 and then final day - what’s the point? In short just lots and lots and of small things that led to a feeling of disappointment, especially at £650 a night. Pool has seen better days and was rammed - not manned so kids just doing what they want. Only went once despite it being what the kids wanted to do most. Both restaurants hugely disappointing especially given sky high prices. Poor service and poor food which features in many other reviews. Nice areas to relax in throughout the hotel, but staff impossible to find to get drinks etc. Complained to the team onsite who were kind enough to offer some money off, but still disappointing and feel I’ve wasted money. The archery and falconry were great, albeit expensive, but very good experience with brilliant people running them which was one saving grace. Avoid.

Arrival was confusing with the valet parking, it wasn’t clear. Our afternoon tea wasn’t served where we were told it would be, so wandered up and down trying to find it. Room was large and bed comfy, but mould all over the bathroom ceiling and had to request a fan as it wasn’t possible to reduce the room temperature. Also, window catch broken on one window. Pool nice and large but the pool area was a bit shabby and tired in places. Issues reported to reception on leaving but no further contact on any of them. Beautiful location and liked the fact they draw and treat their own water from the river for baths etc. but won’t be back.

Room smelt of baby sick on arrival so that a huge disappointment. I think they really lack good, quality staff but it is in the middle of nowhere so maybe tough to get good people. What a beautiful property. Great hiking trails and many activities to enjoy. Spacious and comfortable room. The Bovey castle has lovely rooms to enjoy refreshments, tea or just relax and enjoy the fire. Would highly recommend.

The property was gorgeous! The room was large and the bathroom updated. Staff were really helpful and the food was very good. It IS very remote so if you are going as a destination to really use the amenities-golf course, pool, spa, etc., it was great. We had hoped to use it as a base to travel out from but the roads were so narrow and rather treacherous getting in, we didn’t feel like driving back and forth to other locations in Devon and Cornwall, which was too bad.

Wonderful country house hotel in about 200 acres of stunning grounds. Lots of outdoorsy things to do. The sitting rooms are glorious with open fires and the staff are attentive and there are lots of little touches that make the hotel stand out. The food is excellent, eat in the Great Western Restaurant if you can. Breakfast excellent.

Our stay was absolutely wonderful. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to make everything perfect. Before arrival, I requested a bouquet of flowers and some balloons to be arranged in our room, and it was beautifully set up just as we hoped. The room itself was lovely, we stayed in a castle valley view room. Waking up to a breathtaking sunrise made it even more memorable. The Sunday roast was exceptional, honestly, the best we’ve had anywhere, and we’ve tried many places for roasts! Breakfast was also excellent, with plenty of variety. We even requested a few items not on the menu, and it was no trouble at all. A truly unforgettable experience. Highly recommend!

Room was nice and clean, the hotel itself is very nice but the service was just slightly off for a luxury hotel. Breakfast was £25 per person and I ordered the avocado and egg on an English muffin with a side of bacon. I got an un-toasted half an English muffin with barely any avocado, it was tiny! I had to remind someone to bring the side of bacon I ordered. No one checked in on us or asked if everything was ok so we couldn’t give any feedback. We thought this might have been a one off so we gave ‘the Great western grill’ a go for dinner and opted for chateaubriand. We were suspicious when the person taking our order didn’t ask how we would like it cooked. I had to tell them that we would like it cooked medium before they walked off. It came out very rare bordering on blue, we had to send it back. For £70 I would expect these things to be perfect first time. Again no one checked in on us and we had to flag someone down to ask for more drinks. Upon checking out we were hoping to provide some feedback but again, no one asked if we enjoyed our stay. Very nice hotel with lots of good activities. The food was good and the hotel itself very nice. The only comments I would make was the service was pretty terrible in the bar and lounge area, slow not too friendly and I had to ask 3 times where my order was, no real apology. The spa is nice but the pool area very dated.

Fantastic and totally beautiful location. Quiet and lovely grounds. If you're a golfer it would be even better. Staff work so hard and are all so professional and welcoming. Beautiful at Christmas and I would recommend it unreservedly.

The attention from the staff begins the moment you pull up to this wonderful, hidden gem in the Dartmoor countryside. We had our two dogs with us and they were treated like royalty during our long weekend break in March. The rain didn’t put us off long walks in the gardens, over to the local pub and also we found time for a spot of archery in the grounds. The food is absolutely brilliant (and the dogs were allowed in the brasserie), the bar served top notch cocktails too. We had a castle room and it was just perfect. Stunning views over the valley and everything you needed for a perfect nights sleep - as well as a lovely coffee and tea station for the morning. The pool was lovely with steam room and sauna and also a stunning view through the glass into the grounds. All in all - utterly faultless in every way.

Everything about Bovey Castle was truly wonderful. It was in a beautiful location, with excellent facilities and delicious food. Above all, the staff was really helpful and friendly at all times. We will definitely visit again. In addition, it was my husband's birthday, and they had a birthday surprise for him.

Cleaners come twice a week - so in a 7 night stay they came day 3 and then final day - what’s the point? In short just lots and lots and of small things that led to a feeling of disappointment, especially at £650 a night. Pool has seen better days and was rammed - not manned so kids just doing what they want. Only went once despite it being what the kids wanted to do most. Both restaurants hugely disappointing especially given sky high prices. Poor service and poor food which features in many other reviews. Nice areas to relax in throughout the hotel, but staff impossible to find to get drinks etc. Complained to the team onsite who were kind enough to offer some money off, but still disappointing and feel I’ve wasted money. The archery and falconry were great, albeit expensive, but very good experience with brilliant people running them which was one saving grace. Avoid.

On arriving at our room for our ruby wedding anniversary we thought there might be an upgrade but no. Also there was a very noisy family with a crying baby that did wake us on 2 occasions during the first night. We did ask to be moved but were told that we would need to pay an extra £100 per night as they had no more classic rooms. On checking the website there was more classic rooms available and also castle rooms at an extra £40 per night. This was not offered. Our first nights meal was £134 approximately and we shared a starter and then had a lamb stew with boiled potatoes and beef short ribs with undercooked fondant potatoes and a small spoonful of cauliflower cheese. Plus a bottle of wine. We know it’s just a brasserie but overpriced with 12.5% service charge. We have been to Bovey many times and feel it is no longer a 5* hotel and has gone downhill.

Our stay was absolutely wonderful. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to make everything perfect. Before arrival, I requested a bouquet of flowers and some balloons to be arranged in our room, and it was beautifully set up just as we hoped. The room itself was lovely, we stayed in a castle valley view room. Waking up to a breathtaking sunrise made it even more memorable. The Sunday roast was exceptional, honestly, the best we’ve had anywhere, and we’ve tried many places for roasts! Breakfast was also excellent, with plenty of variety. We even requested a few items not on the menu, and it was no trouble at all. A truly unforgettable experience. Highly recommend!

Room was nice and clean, the hotel itself is very nice but the service was just slightly off for a luxury hotel. Breakfast was £25 per person and I ordered the avocado and egg on an English muffin with a side of bacon. I got an un-toasted half an English muffin with barely any avocado, it was tiny! I had to remind someone to bring the side of bacon I ordered. No one checked in on us or asked if everything was ok so we couldn’t give any feedback. We thought this might have been a one off so we gave ‘the Great western grill’ a go for dinner and opted for chateaubriand. We were suspicious when the person taking our order didn’t ask how we would like it cooked. I had to tell them that we would like it cooked medium before they walked off. It came out very rare bordering on blue, we had to send it back. For £70 I would expect these things to be perfect first time. Again no one checked in on us and we had to flag someone down to ask for more drinks. Upon checking out we were hoping to provide some feedback but again, no one asked if we enjoyed our stay. It was all very odd. This place could be a gem if the service and food stepped it up a notch.

Very nice hotel with lots of good activities. The food was good and the hotel itself very nice. The only comments I would make was the service was pretty terrible in the bar and lounge area, slow not too friendly and I had to ask 3 times where my order was, no real apology. The spa is nice but the pool area very dated.

Food was lovely. Breakfast varied with hot options cooked to order. Dinners at both restaurants very nice but overpriced for what they are. Service very good across the hotel. Cleanliness very good in all parts of hotel. Spa treatments were amazing using TempleSpa products. Lovely grounds. Swimming pool cold and whirlpool area not heated.

We have been here before (some years ago) and it was very nice to be back. The hotel building is very fine and it sits in beautiful grounds. The bar staff were friendly and chatty. If we had concerns I would say that our evening meal was rather ordinary and the breakfast service was slow. I hope though that we will be able to return some day.

Lovely hotel! Surroundings and hotel itself are stunning. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Very dog friendly. The only downside is that food could be better especially breakfast!

A superb stay in a beautiful setting. The rooms are superb, as is the service and the general ambience. The Great Western Grill provides an excellent dining experience, very much in keeping with the hotel. Perhaps worth avoiding Smith's Brasserie though, which seems devoid of character, and to have been lifted from a nearby chain hotel. There are plenty of excellent pubs nearby though, so this isn't really an issue.

What a great place to stay, afternoon tea is a must (it might look a little expensive, but it was worth every penny). A little out of the way, don't make the mistake of coming through the back road.

Bovey Castle is absolutely beautiful. It’s calm, immaculate and lavish. The staff were all friendly, helpful and professional at all times…even when we witnessed them being faced with challenging entitled guests. The grounds are stunning. We enjoyed a relaxing swim in the evening and a beautiful walk around the garden. Our room was extremely well presented. It was spacious and everything we needed was provided. Unfortunately we were glad to only be staying for one night as it was the worst night sleep in a hotel ever. The mattresses clearly hadn’t been replaced in a very long time as they both (a queen size bed made up of joining two singles) had a huge dip in the middle where people had slept. And worse still our room adjoined the hotel lift which was unbearably noisy and meant we were disturbed off and on all night. Such a shame as I’m sure another room with newer mattresses would’ve made it the perfect stay. And for any future guests don’t automatically follow a satnav without checking the route or you may end up driving some extremely small unsuitable lanes.
