Cosy hotel. Rooms were clean and neat. Nice pub with a nice atmosphere and food. Good location to visit York and less expensive compared to living in York! Free and ample parking as well.

We booked 2 double rooms for a long weekend, both rooms were spotless, very comfortable bed, so an excellent night sleep! The lock broke on one room on the last night so my family were moved to another room with no problem. Friendly, approachable staff, very attentive. We booked our evening meals at the bar, good choice on the menu. Extensive choice for breakfast too. Would definitely stay there again.

Convenient hotel for a local stay. Easy to find & large car park. Check-in simple (assumed pre-checked in online). Staff welcoming & friendly. Room was relatively modern & clean and had a decent shower. The room was in the original building though & had several flights of stairs to access - not ideal if you've mobility issues; fine for us though. Breakfast offer was OK & the quality fine for the price, service/food could be quicker. Bar good with reasonable selection of drinks at standard pricing.

Stayed here as I was on business close by and it was spot-on. Friendly staff, excellent food in the evening, and a fantastic breakfast to set me up for the day.

Just stayed for one night. Lovely big bedroom and bathroom, spotlessly clean and comfortable. We had dinner over at the pub too, service great, friendly atmosphere and nice food.

Quick and efficient check in. Friendly staff. Room was in the annexe building across the car park from the pub. Room was fine. Just enough room to walk around the bed. Bathroom had a bath, which was a bonus. Optional breakfast was good with tasty food and plenty of options. Location was about 20 miles from York, but on our route, so meant we avoided any city traffic on the Friday evening. The room was very quiet despite being on a main road. Easy access to York on the Saturday in about half an hour, so would recommend as a cheaper option to city centre hotels.

On arrival the room was cold and the wasn't any tea and coffee available. Once the heating was put on I was unable to reduce the temperature in the room which then made it unbearable through the night to sleep. There was very little room to maneuver round the bed which made it difficult during the night when I required the bathroom. The tiles in the bathroom looked dirty and out dated.

Clean, well maintained property

We had pre-booked for two, non-refundable, nights at The Owl but only stayed one. It is 4*, the staff and food are its pluses but the fabric of the hotel is shabby. Our room, Room 1, was a fair size but its condition was poor. One bedside light didn't work and the light over the en-suite sink flashed on and off randomly. The bath contained hair from previous guests. and the sealant around the bathroom window was covered in black mould The rug in front of the desk had a large ridge down the centre, a trip hazard if going to use the toilet, especially at night. The bedroom window had a safety strap to prevent it opening too far. This had 2 screws missing and was not connected to the opening window. The most serious defect was in relation to Fire Safety. Above the 'spy hole' on the back of the room door were fire instructions. The map was tiny and faint, very difficult to read. It only showed the main fire exit route down the staircase. It DID NOT show the secondary escape route along the landing, where old furniture was propped against the walls, to the push-bar fire door to the external fire escape. Looking out of the fire door there were a pair of discarded work boots in front of it and 3+ piles of dog excrement on the flat roof leading to the fire escape. Staff clearly used this area to allow their dog to use it as a toilet. Looking out of the dining room window there was broken furniture and rubbish to be seen. A formal complaint has been made to the Brewery.

Was sent to the wrong room first which was occupied, looked like a nice room then was sent across the courtyard to a standard basic room. It still had a plate with a piece of cake on from last guest. The toilet was useless it wouldn’t flush properly

The room was dirty...mattress stained yellow and something had been splashed up the walls but not cleaned off. We had cod and chips for dinner...the cod had been sat under the heatlamp for an extended periid of time and was incredibly dry. The watermelon & feta salad was small, ingredients were not fresh, and 3 pieces of watermelon. It was a main course dish. We did get offered free desserts as compensatiin for the meals but declined.

The room was ok apart from the cobwebs. The bathroom was terrible and used it as little as possible. The bath was dirty with mould, the toilet seat was loose and we had to kill 7 spiders before my daughter would even enter as she’s terrified of them. The staff were impolite at times and all need to learn how to smile! The food was mediocre and not all options available. We had another stay booked for the following week which we promptly cancelled. It was in a good location for my daughters cricket match but will not be returning

The room was fine. We were only there for 1 night so didn't need much more than a comfy bed and somewhere clean to wash. Unfortunately, the bathroom was less than clean. There were hairs still present in the bath from previous occupents and what looked like toilet stains on the wall next to the loo. The bathroom had a very unpleasant smell. I couldn't shower in the bath so just had to have a quick wash. Meal and service at the pub restaurant was good.

Staff were very friendly and polite. Room was tired and small. There was not enough room to sit on toilet properly for example. Bed was clean and comfortable . Price was reasonable so can’t expect too much .

We (2 adults, 2 kids) stayed for one night. Pros: the Family Room was very large, more like a suite as the kids had their own small room with two beds off the main room. The ‘double’ bed was huge, and the pillows are the comfiest I’ve ever slept on - my husband said it was the best night’s sleep he’s ever had in a hotel! There’s plenty of parking available, the area feels safe and is very quiet. Only 35mins drive into York (which was the main reason for our stay), but not even half the price of more central hotels. Well worth the drive! Cons: the only things to note are that the floorboards are quite creaky, so I imagine if you’re on the ground floor you might find it noisy. And the bathroom could definitely do with a spruce up (small amount of mould in the grout, peeling paint from the bath panel etc). Overall we had a lovely stay, and will definitely be back!

The beds and pillows were great. I was in a single room. which was a size room, had everything you needed. The only negative comment is I was on the 3rd floor, a lot of steps for me.

A dormitory type room with all the noise from people toileting/crashing on ceilings/slamming doors until 3am. Stuffy, uncomfortable, seriously over priced.

Overall a reasonable place to stay. However the plumbing is very noisy from other rooms and the walls are very thin Rooms are a little dated, but were clean.

Abit dated in the room but clean and the shower was good but didn't drain. The family room had a spare bed in the corber that has no plug sockets or light switches by the bed. A lamp/bedside table would be nice. Breakfast was good but service a little slow.

The food was bad, asked for a medium stake but it was way too overcooked, sauce in lasagne tasted a bit off, asked for a sauce that isn’t spicy and it was spicy (despite the waitress saying its not), we were listening to music at 21:50 or so and we were told to listen to it quieter despite us talking louder than the music itself. Beds were uncomfortable, the shower water was too hot on both sides. Wouldn’t recommend

The room was clean and the bed comfortable. However the breakfast and coffee were appalling. £6.75 for a piece of sliced white toast. Processed cereals, the fruit on offer was an over ripe apple and the coffee was dreadful. Utterly hideous! Stay there by all means but don’t touch the breakfast!
