Excellent. I loved the private onsen and the view from my room- breathtaking. We went to Nita Pass to the gondola and the view is amazing. Just a note for westerners, the food can be challenging if you aren’t familiar or like traditional Japanese food. I do not eat pork or beef. I still enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend to anyone.

This is a top class hotel, not inexpensive but worth the cost. It is actually a historic hotel built in 1917, but rebuilt in 2018 so everything is new and modern. Every room has a private onsen bath. Because if its long history, it has the best location right in front of the Unzen Jigoku geothermal area -- every terrace room has a direct overview of the Jigoku. There are 20 terrace rooms and 4 villas which are larger and higher grade. We spent 2 nights, one in a terrace room and one in a villa. The villa was large with 2 onsen baths, one outdoors and one indoors. It also cones with its own private dining room (by the way, the food is great). Overall, i liked the terrace room more, it has the view of the Jigoku, and you get to eat in the 1917 dining room which also overlooks the Jigoku (and less expensive too). Staff were very helpful everywhere in the hotel.

BLACK MOULD EVERYWHERE in $800 rooms. No other onsen hotel I’ve been to has this obvious mould problem and lack of ventilation. If you are allergic -beware. It’s a serious health and safety concern. The hotel is “newly renovated” but it is lipstick on a pig —very old and stinky. Also odd staff and check in procedure. The dinner was inedible, old, and not fresh for Japanese food. Only redeeming quality is that it is well-located and the rooftop bar is nice. For the price, I absolutely cannot recommend staying here.
