Safestay York Micklegate

Amazing decorations. The bathroom and toilet are in the bedroom for 10 people, it was difficult to use for turn and noise.

The place needs kitchetes, a tv room and laundry facilities. Strong rules about losing your accommodation if you are found to make too much noise after 12 pm. The place needs a deep clean and the shower facilities need improving. Shared toilets are a bad idea and must be super uncomfortable for women.

Good: excellent location, walkable distance from train station and town centre. Bunk beds had curtains and you could just close it and be private. Place was quiet. Bad: Staff at the reception were not friendly, at times rude and dismissive. The owner should come down sometimes to check it. The atmosphere wasn't friendly, not a good place to make new friends. There were tables, chairs and armchairs on the ground floor but people sat individually and spent time on their phones. Bedrooms very bad cleaned, dust pilled up under/side of beds. Terrible mattress. Toile/shower cubicle very small, shower plug blocked which created a pool every time I had a shower. Not very pleasant!

Booked a private room for 5, including adults and kids. Room 25 is just under the dining room which was full of an adult group having boisterous fun until 1 or 2 am (only slowed after complaining because kids couldn’t sleep and asked to quiet down - not soundproof so felt like we were laying in middle of a bar or party). Adults just having fun - would have loved it on an adult trip in my 20’s. Knew as a hostel it would be simple beds and loud but assumed quiet hours at least by midnight but there were none, okay to be loud 24hrs. Beds were fine - bunks not creaky, bed quite firm but ok and private, comforter plush. Great shared bathroom just across from room, clean with 3 private showers and 2 toilets. Wish it had been communicated that towels were available for fee - wasn’t told and didn’t show in Hotels post or email. Location is great, walking distance of food, stores, river, activities. Parked in Blossom st car park a reasonable walking distance for reasonable £11. Again would do well for a girls trip or adult fun late into night. I didn’t sleep and kids didn’t much either so were miserable. York was so busy for holiday market after restless night it was too much for them so disappointing it was a bit of a wasted trip altogether.

Due to the extreme noise, a nose strip should be offered and mandatory, it was disturbing even through headphones and earplugs. No aircon in room, advertised as there. Staff were helpful but not always listening to my concern about the door not opening to my dorm. No plug sockets for upper bunk anywhere, made this an awkward situation of impinging on the privacy of the lower bunkmate. I know this is momentary but it still affects another person at any hours of the day or night. No shock absorption for bunk beds, so that you can feel you're alone, otherwise both parties feel the others' movement. No lock provided, such as a electronic lock for the storage facility in the room lockers, which was unexpected. The cage did not go under the bed when a guest was in the lower bunk - functionality issue. Guests didn't have the House Rules to hand about lights out, no noise after 10 etc, this would be handy in the bathroom and room door to prevent selfish behaviour of an anti social nature. E. g. A guest left water all over the bathroom floor and entrance to the bathroom, a trip hazard, and when asked to wipe it up politely, did not reply or action the mess.

Nima, the staff, is really friendly and attentive. You can leave your luggage here for just 3£/day. Great location, close to the station. The room is clean. There’s a cage that you can put your belongings in and lock for safety. The only downside is there is no electrical outlet for the top bunk. Roommates can be quite noisy in the early morning, but that how the dormitory is.

The property is very attractive, the whole idea of using the history is good but.....10 people in a dorm with one tiny capsule en suite is not really adequate and it was not well maintained. Too few waste bins in the dorm and bathroom. People in top bunks had poor access to plugs. No free tea or coffee available. Generally a Hostel that is trying to be an hotel.

It was a lovely building & communal areas were good. However the TV blew up as soon as I put it on & was kaput. It was lonely in my room with minimal facilities & staff were barely helpful. Other guests spent 20 mins getting the TV in the dining room to work. I'll be in Montrose next week in a single room at exactly half the price of this one so not good value.

It was the worst place I've stayed in my entire life, the shower didn't work on any of the days I was there, I made 6 complaints and nothing was resolved, there simply wasn't hot water, the bathroom and room were only cleaned one day Anyway, thank God I'm in another hotel here in York, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

A gorgeous Georgian mansion converted into comfortable accommodations. Curving staircases and stuccoed ceilings. The staff are genuinely kind and helpful. Much more characterful than a cheap chain hotel.

My stay at Micklegate would have been a much better experience if it was not for the last evening. During my last evening at Micklegate Hostel, I was awakening several times by a group of adults and kids that were staying there. They appeared to be a very large group of teenagers and their coaches. For some reason the front desk staff ignored all the noise that was going on in the hallways and rooms on the upper floors. I had to walk past all the loud teenager and their coaches and complain to the front desk attendant. Apparently, he made them aware that it was late and they must stop the noise. Close to the station and within the city walls, so great as pedestrians. Plenty of food and drink nearby. Loads of character.
