Haka House Franz Josef

Clean room and great location, right next to groceries store and restaurants and adventure activities shops. They also have a big common kitchen where you can store and cook your own food. We booked a family private room but basically it's a hostel

Very clean, modern and comfortable stay! Appreciated the TV room, common room with games, a fireplace and lots of seating. The kitchen was well equipped and spacious, my highlight was the sauna which was inside the hostel that was delightful and warmed me after a cold hike. I also loved that my en-suite bathroom had both an extractor fan and heater too which was a nice touch.

Probably one of my favourite hostel stays in the South Island. I stayed in a total of three Haka Houses over my NZ trip, but I think Franz Josef was my favourite. Obviously the location is incredible and proximity to the glacier can't be beat. The kitchen is massive with lots of facilities and storage, the games room/lounge/dining room and movie room are all pretty generously appointed. It also lends itself well to socialisation and I think I unexpectedly made the most pals passing through here (and Arthur's Pass). The front desk staff are really nice and are there from 0800-2000hrs. There was no onsite parking (paid) available due to summer high season but plenty of free street parking available. All Haka Houses I've stayed at have the same bunk style with two AU/NZ electrical sockets as well as a USB-A and USB-C port, plus lockable storage that has the same thing inside (bring a decent-sized lock, I had some tiny ones and had to buy a medium one). This is a great idea. You can charge things while you're away and they're locked up, and if you don't have an international adapter you can use cable only. The privacy curtains are a good touch as well. They also have all had the nice enclosed showers with a detachable showerhead. And bath mats! I also think I had my best hostel sleep here, the beds are decently comfy and I got really lucky with roomies - three other women, none of us snored.

The room was spotless as was the rest of the facility. The sauna was a nice bonus. Hal’s House keeps Raising the bar. A very good stay. Highly recommended.

Zu wenig Parkplätze, DZ mit eigenem Bad war sauber, roch aber muffig (Teppichboden). Die Pfannen in der Küche gehören in den Müll. Zerkratzte Beschichtung. Zu wenig Geschirrtücher. Die vorhandenen waren dreckig.

Our twin room with ensuite room was clean and tidy. Bathroom space was not utilised and did not provide shelf/counter space or hooks for two. The kitchen was atrociously out of date in comparison to the rest of the place, which was clean and pleasantly decorated. Large communal area was cold, asked to have the big gas fire place turned on when 2bus loads of extra people arrived - an oil heater was added to the communal area.

Very clean and well organised hostel. Secure and good rules in place which were respected. Mixed crowd so not entirely full of young backpackers and felt comfortable. Plenty of local parking.

Cute little room - a little small but that was to be expected. Bathrooms and room were clean, and there was a sauna and laundry facilities too. Loved our stay here!

The ablution area was filthy and only one woman's toilet for the whole top floor

Great location and hostel has huge potential to be so nice.. rooms and bathrooms were clean on arrival but unfortunately they are severely understaffed and can see the affects after a day or two (no toilet paper and kitchen/bathrooms are disgusting). Not a reflection on current staff who were very nice but something management needs to look at.

New and clean room, large kitchen, central walking location, and clean bathrooms. All you could ask for!

I stayed for 4 days and 3 nights, during that time the bathroom facilities were never cleaned despite me raising the issue to staff at reception.They were dirty and quite frankly disgusting. There was no toilet paper until the 4th day so it was lucky I had my own stash. No soap was provided in the bathroom either. Flooding of the bathrooms also seemed an issue. The kitchen facilities were also dirty and never cleaned. On a positive, the room I stayed in was nice and clean.

Really happy with the room, clean, cosy and well run place.

Beds were comfortable, quiet at night. We had workmen making building noise (banging, drilling) outside our room for both afternoons, which was really annoying and hopeless given the cost of the room. Overall, clean and well run, weird having to put our sheets out with the room cost!

Mostly everything was fine with our stay, except there was no TV. Please connect the TV

Another great Haka hostel. Common areas fantastic and large enough to accommodate the number of guests. Beds super comfortable and private. Staff at check in very friendly and helpful. Only minor gripe was no shower mats. There were some small rubbery mats, which I assume we're just for not slip purposes, because they and the surrounding floor were soaked (and freezing!). Would be good to provide floor mats to actually keep the floor dry

Really noisy. Dryer started at 10pm and was finished an hour later but started every 2 minutes for 1 minute the next hour. Furthermore the door to the toilet banged so hard that it could be felt in the bed. so I was woken up every time someone had to use the toilet. But it was clean and the beds/rooms were nice. but there was so much noise that I would never stay there again.

Great place to stay overnight. Many dining options very close. A bit noisy until 10pm, then quiet, so no complaints.

Great place to stay! The staff was super friendly and helpful. The location was great, easy to walk to food, stores, etc. The kitchen facilities had everything you could possibly need. We had a room with a private bathroom, which was nice. The bed was really tight against one wall, making it necessary to climb in through the end, which was not the best. We could hear activity in the men’s bathroom on the other side of our wall, but fortunately it didn’t keep us awake. I would definitely stay here again.

The large rooms were beautifully presented,and had all the features one could want.The hosts were friendly and v obliging.

I canceled as i dont appreciate it saying pay at place but then being chareged b4 i arrive on credit card with fees. They ront offer evtpos or xash. So watch out because by them charging credit card you will grt stung by high dees. So make sure you get refunded as its misleading and against the cga

Unfortunately the room we booked was flooded and so moved into a double bunk room with shared bathroom (we booked private en-suite room) Staff were helpful and also gave us the opportunity to cancel but there was no other accommodation available in the town. The manager gave us a part refund and was apologetic about the situation.

Fantastic property, clean, super comfortable beds in the family room, lovely ensuite. Just remember your passports for check in. We only had our Canadian driver licenses & it threw a spanner in the works and made check in a nightmare, despite having prepaid for the room.

The reception girl is very nice and helpful. Appreciate that. Moden design dorm.

This was a great stay. Very clean. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. En-suite was perfect. Good value.

Clean, comfortable bed, good kitchen facilities, Franz Josef is small so short walking distance to main street

Well appointed comfortable dorm with 4 bunk beds, storage, curtains and individually compartmentalized. We were a family of 7 and with kids. Kids had a ball, large expansive kitchen with games section adjourning and the best but is it is a stone's throw away from the town with all the dining options avail.
