It is an older hotel. Our room was upgraded but the air conditioner didn’t get below 70 degrees in the room. The lobby area was great and we were given bottled waters any time we asked for free. The pool is very tiny and only opened from 11am to 7pm.

It was a nice hotel, but there was no access to the pool for handicap. You had to walk up a flight of stairs. The overall look of the hotel is nice, however, the wallpaper on the room floors was creepy- especially with the “shining movie” type low light in the hallway lol

The Empire Hotel is conveniently located near the south end of Central Park, within walking distance to the Lincoln Center and shops on 5th Avenue. Although the hotel was experiencing elevator malfunctions, they did have staff available to escort guests to the rooftop.

Sooooo not worth the money. Room was small and not well taken care of. Chips on the wood and vinyl wallpaper. Gym was dirty and not well taken care of. Very limiting. Room was not black out curtains. Room was not sound proofed. You could hear everything going on. Tv was basic channels and only sometimes worked. Afternoon staff a girl and guy were lovely. But overnight girl was not. There wasn’t even a trash can in the room, I’ve never seen that before. Bed was comfy. Location is good if that’s the area you need to be in. No rooms have tubs which as a bath post work girlie sucked too. Glad it was a work stay and not personal. I would have been so upset and heartbroken had I spent my own money on this place.

The location is terrific but the condition of the hotel is terrible. The rooms are old and badly in need of updating. The lights flickered in the bathroom and the paint was chipping on the bathroom door and ceiling in the shower. The furniture and refrigerator needs replacing. It's sad because the location and the lobby is really good but the room needs major updates. Plus when we got there to check in, there was a really long line to check in. Two of the four elevators did not work and there was a line to take the elevators.

We were hoping to get a bottle of wine and the hotel staff had no idea where we could procure one...this seemed odd for a NYC experience! Apparently this city does sleep.

There’s nothing to like. As noted by previous visitors the noises from the air con units meant for 7 nights you get virtually no sleep at all. The roof top pool is a joke as it’s tiny and impossible to get to. They say they have 2 restaurants but could only see 1 and it’s not owned by them so you can never get a table. They say they have a rooftop bar but it’s not owned by them and it is closed for private functions. No facilities in the rooms and a shambles of a hotel. ( Heard another hotel patron say this)

The location was superb! Little pool and gym. Staff very friendlies the only lady in reception didnt explain abou the guest extra charge. She tild me to take a pre authorising card payment in case of damage instead to remind the extra charge that expedia mention in the booking. Otherwise very happy with Hotel, expedia and flights. Loved everything except for the pool which was the whole reason I picked this hotel. Pool is so small with really weird set up. Took one look and left. Everything else was beautiful.

After a 12-hour journey from the UK, we arrived at the hotel and were initially impressed. The check-in process was quick and efficient, and first impressions of the property seemed positive. Unfortunately, this changed the moment we entered our room. It was absolutely filthy I immediately raised the issue with staff, and to their credit, they responded by waiving the residency fee and offering a room upgrade. We were told to pack our belongings and that staff would move them to the new room by 3:00 pm. We even planned our sightseeing around this, returning at the agreed time. However, when I went to the front desk, staff denied ever making such a promise. They insisted there was nothing in the system, leaving me in the position of “my word against theirs.” After 20 minutes of back and forth, a room suddenly became “available,” and we were eventually upgraded with a 50% refund for the first night. Unfortunately, the new room was hardly better. There were damp patches on the ceiling, a leaking sink with brown liquid, exposed wires hanging from the air-conditioning unit, and yet again, very poor cleanliness. I complained once more but decided not to spend the rest of my holiday chasing fixes. Overall, this was the worst hotel room I have ever stayed in.

Great location and staff was very nice. Housekeeping was amazing. Except…we came back and there was a cockroach on our bed and mold/mildew in the shower. Rooms are outdated. Would not stay here again. With the hundreds of hotels in the city, there are better choices.

Room had a nauseatingly strong chlorine smell and was very dirty. Big piles of dust around the bed and trash on floor. Water damage on ceiling and in bathrooms and overall run down neglected atmosphere. Took staff several hours to move us to a different room after showing us another room just as chemical smelly and dirty. The room we finally got was okay but kept having pieces of the ceiling falling into the bed while sleeping. Location is great and the maid Martha and the door men were wonderful but the front desk staff and management was unprofessional, uninformed and not very customer solution minded.

I have never stayed in a four-star hotel that looked worse than a motel six-from the dirty tables and bathroom to the wallpaper, peeling off to the curtain, being broken the AC, not working and no ability to get hot water. I was disgusted even after I asked to change rooms, I got something that was just as bad this hotel is definitely not a four star hotel and should be not recommended to any traveler. I will be contacting hotels.com for a full refund and if not, we will be processing the refund through my credit card.

Dirty room & bath in poor condition, falling apart, in desperate need of renovation. Heating / cooling was noisy and awful, carpets & furniture dirty, old & worn.....all around nasty room. Have stayed here several times, nothing has been improved or replaced in 20 + years, it's all just old, falling apart, warn out and dirty.

The room was filthy and beat up including a dirty shower, beat up bathroom door, rusted bathroom mirror, ripped carpet and peeling wallpaper not to mention a broken deadbolt that I requested to be fixed multiple times and still didn’t work upon checkout.

Pros- great location without the craziness of touristy Mid-Town. Near the park and billionaire row make it feel safe. Rooftop bar is nice but owned and operated by a completely different ownership. Con’s: rooms are really small, there was mold and missing grout in the bathroom all over. It was very dated in terms of the bathrooms. I was missing carpet in parts of the room. And peeling wallpaper. Trust me the bathrooms make you feel like you’re living in a slum.

Check in was not accommodating. I paid for Standard Room, 1 Queen Bed. He gave Standard Room 1 Double Bed, no blackout drapes, no chair because the room was small. I needed a chair so I can do my work. The room was cold even when I put the thermostat to the highest temperature. There was draft by the window. I had to put towels to control the draft. I reported to the receptionist who assigned me to the room ASAP that I paid for Queen Bed, was showing him my receipt, he told me that was Queen Bed by their standard. I did not argue. I have queen beds in my house I know the difference. Just for your information for your other customers.

We stayed for 3 nights in 2 rooms. We paid $400/night over the Tgiving holiday. The street-facing rooms are very loud. There was no thermostat control in that room and was very warm and made sleeping very difficult. The other room faced inward and had no noise. There was a unit for heat/air in the room (unlike the other room) which required maintenance to fix but then never cooled off room to a sleep-able temp and was very loud. It's a very tired hotel with old heating units in rooms and overpriced, IMO. We needed to extend for one night and paid $287 on site-- seemed much more appropriate. Staff are lovely. Nice location. But lots of guests with dogs (even some who, shockingly, did their business in the hallway) which may be the reason for the hotel's appearance.

Context: Express room (trust me, don’t). It was dated and too small for a petite person. More on that later. Scuffs on baseboards/doors and smears on the wallpaper. Not sure what the deal was with temp control in the room because one minute freezing and the next blazing hot. The thermostat appeared to be a replacement? Dangling off of what looked like something from 1975. Room advertised as having a desk and chair, but … no chair to be had. Shower drain super slow. Front desk was meh, doing their jobs vibe. All good. The room size remains the star of the show. I am a petite person and was struggling the point of laughter to use the restroom. Your knees hit the door if you are on the toilet and trying to close and getting out offers up more hilarity. Let’s say closet. Seriously, anyone over 5 foot tall might get trapped. No room service or food options (grab and go) outside on site restos. Not even coffee in the room. What went well? The rooftop bar. Food was amazing. I had one of the best skirt steaks ever with a kiss of charcoal. Yum. Very kind bartenders. The other resto serving up Mexican was incredible. My elevator buddy raved about the gelato too. Location is perfect. There’s a lot of potential in this place. Someone needs to lean in and fix those rooms. It would be a shame for it not to see its full potential.

Not sure what the deal was with temp control in the room because one minute freezing and the next blazing hot. The thermostat appeared to be a replacement? Dangling off of what looked like something from 1975. Room advertised as having a desk and chair, but … no chair to be had. Shower drain super slow. Front desk was meh, doing their jobs vibe. All good. The room size remains the star of the show. I am a petite person and was struggling the point of laughter to use the restroom. Your knees hit the door if you are on the toilet and trying to close and getting out offers up more hilarity. Let’s say closet. Seriously, anyone over 5 foot tall might get trapped. No room service or food options (grab and go) outside on site restos. Not even coffee in the room. What went well? The rooftop bar. Food was amazing. I had one of the best skirt steaks ever with a kiss of charcoal. Yum. Very kind bartenders. The other resto serving up Mexican was incredible. My elevator buddy raved about the gelato too. Location is perfect. There’s a lot of potential in this place. Someone needs to lean in and fix those rooms. It would be a shame for it not to see its full potential.

Quick and efficient check-in was much appreciated. Same true at checkout. Beautiful, comfortable lobby. Excellent location across from Lincoln Center. The problem was the room; only partially renovated. Bathroom renovated, but very small. Rain shower head very high. Could not be adjusted by wife which resulted in water being sprayed all over bathroom. Need instructions how to operate shower wand. Not at all intuitive. Furniture in room quite old and chipped in numerous spots. HVAC and windowsills in serious need of painting. Same true of baseboard. Wallpaper relatively new and in good shape, but odd design. Carpet pulled apart at seams in two spots. Heat didn't work. Had to call to fix. Very friendly guy showed up quickly and fixed it (fortunately). Great view of Lincoln Center out window, but location meant it was a bit noisy. Amenities actually decent, but safe so high in closet (actually a rickety armoire) that wife couldn't reach it. Very frustrating room. The idea is there, but it is just not well executed (or perhaps incomplete). Strongly recommend getting a superior room or larger. The standard room would be very small. No restaurant, although not really needed given the location. I don't recall a fitness room either.

The staff sent a text stating that check out was 10am and I had a confirmation stating 12pm. That was very controversial and concerning. The housekeeper on my floor was very rude and kept asking the guests when are they checking out. That was very bizarre and strange.

A special shout-out to Denis, at the door, and Pasquale, at the desk. Without Denis, I would not have been able to move my son into college - he went WAY above and beyond to help out a struggling mom. In 3 short days I felt he'd become a friend, with huge smiles at greeting us and great advice always. Pasquale recognized the wifi trouble in my room, and that I needed to keep working in the (lovely) lobby, and offered to adjust my bill, which was very thoughtful.

I stayed at this hotel in New York from August 14th to 17th and booked two rooms. One was on the 5th floor, and the other on the 10th. The room on the 5th floor had no safe box, and the shower water was very poorly regulated. The room on the 10th floor had a terrible, nauseating smell that made me almost vomit once. On top of that, neither of the rooms had a ventilation fan in the bathroom. The air conditioning system in both rooms made an extremely loud and disturbing noise, which made it nearly impossible to sleep. Also, when we set the thermostat to 65°F, it automatically reset by itself as if controlled from elsewhere. The only positive thing about this hotel is its location. Other than that, I do not recommend staying here at all. Honestly, it felt more like a hostel. Even a one-star hotel would have been a better choice.

I can hardly put into words how bad this hotel is. Shabby, furniture falling apart, Hallways so dark that people were using flashlights to find their rooms. Not a single “amenity “ in the room. No ice bucket, no coffee maker…our room didn’t even have a blow dryer. We were given 3 bath towels, 1 hand towel and two washcloths. I was so upset with the conditions that I wanted to pack up and leave! Tried to call the front desk but the phone didn’t work. I had to go in person and ask two different times to get towels and blow dryer. I can’t imagine how this place stays in business or how it rates 4 stars on Hotels.com. I wish I had read the reviews more carefully. Lesson learned.

Despite arriving at 10am, we were not able to check in until 3pm (which we knew ahead of time). We were able to store our luggage safely until then, which I appreciated. We were allowed to venture up to the rooftop to the bar and pool area in the meantime, but one of the elevators was broken and we had to go up the elevator and then up two flights of stairs to get there. On the way there, the entire hotel was HOT. It seemed like the AC was not working. We gave them the benefit of the doubt, as it was a pretty hot day in general. We then were able to check in at 4pm, and when we arrived up at our room, the room itself was 85 degrees!!! We called up front and they said they would send someone to look at the AC. The guy came and told us he would be back, but was not back within 15 minutes. We called to ask the front desk if there was another room available, and they said that the hotel was fully booked (even though during the entire day we came and went through the lobby and hallways and saw hardly any guests). We asked for a full refund, and made reservations elsewhere. After we returned home, we noticed they refunded all but $300 some dollars. I called the hotel to inquire about it, and apparently, the manager that I dealt with on that day was "out for a couple of days" and he was the only one who could authorize this refund. Do not waste your money here. It is dark, dingy, hot and in need of lots of TLC. Their website pics are very misleading.

We did walk in while it was a terrible rain storm out and we were soaking wet with our luggage they literally were asking us for IDs and the keys to our room right when we walked in from outside… No hello no welcome no nothing! The beds are ridiculously small and not very comfortable they had a sheet on top of a comforter it was very strange! The pictures online looks so much nicer than what it actually is! I was not very happy with my stay at the Empire Hotel at all!

Staff was absolutely outstanding from front desk to porters to housekeeping. Great location. Easy walk to Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Old building but well kept. Could use some updates but it was fine. We were happy with our stay. Bed could be a little softer though.

We had to ask to move room due to the cleanliness of our initial room, however the staff at the front desk were very accommodating and moved us straight away. They have complimentary bottles of water available at the front desk also which is great to grab every morning before heading out! I would say that the reception and lobby look great, however the rooms are definitely due and upgrade as everything is showing signs of wear.

Room was larger than usual at this hotel. Much appreciated. We have been staying here for years. Now has a restaurant back in the hotel- great! The best thing about this hotel is that it's next door to Amarino-the best gelato in the city. The second best thing is its location. It's step away to Lincoln center, many transit routes, and several restaurants.

The Empire hotel is in a great location for visiting Manhattan as it is across the street from Lincoln Center, a couple of blocks from Columbus circle and Central Park, and a 15 minute walk down to the theatre district. The subway is nearby as well as many restaurants good restaurants to choose from. The room was clean and quiet aside from the usual late night NYC sirens, the bed was comfortable, and the price was fair. Good place to stay in Manhattan.

Great location and service! We planned our escape around our stay spot, primarily using the 1 and D lines via the Columbus Circle stop. Lots to do within walking distance with a kid, too: Central Park carousel, playground, and zoo. Pool area and bar were nice but sort of awkward to get to as guests of the hotel. Keenan, Pasquale, Ruby, and Kate were very hospitable and Keenan helped get us checked in to our room hours earlier than expected when we were just hoping to check bags…a super help with a kiddo and after a few hours on the train.

The property was lovely. The location was awesome!!! We came from out of town and had a beautiful view of Lincoln center. The front desk agents and doormen were very welcoming and hospitable. And THE ROOFTOP BAR WAS AWESOME! but you HAVE to make reservations if you want to get a spot! it's not connected to the hotel so they won't care if you're a guest lol. I felt so cool staying at the Empire Hotel for my NYC Vacation and would totally suggest it to friends!

Clean and functional room. Still a little annoyed about not being able to get a full view through our window due to the shade being immovable. The property and room was fine. Although they don’t offer any coffee in the mornings nor have coffee makers in the rooms. The refrigerator wasn’t that cold, but all we kept in there was water. The fire alarm went off our first day in the afternoon. And then in the middle of the night it went off again a couple more times. It wasn’t a bad hotel by any means, I think I just expected more.

My stay at The Empire Hotel was extremely disappointing. The room was in poor condition and clearly requires significant maintenance. The sink drained very slowly and was actually loose from the counter. The shower was constantly dripping, several tile joints were cracked or damaged, and the curtains were not working properly. The A/C was extremely noisy, sounding like an old car, which made it difficult to relax or sleep comfortably. Unfortunately, the condition of the room was only part of the problem. The most disturbing incident occurred on Saturday at approximately 2:00 PM. A hotel employee came to my door accompanied by a security officer and a dog, and they proceeded to have the dog sniff throughout my room. The entire hotel had a strong smell of marijuana, and apparently my room was also checked. I have no knowledge of whether the same procedure was carried out in other rooms, but having a security officer and a dog enter the room area without any prior explanation was extremely uncomfortable and unsettling. For a hotel with The Empire’s reputation and pricing, I expected a significantly higher standard of maintenance, service, and guest experience. Overall, this was not the quality of stay I would expect from this hotel, and unfortunately, I will not be staying at The Empire Hotel again.

The sink drained very slowly and was actually loose from the counter. The shower was constantly dripping, several tile joints were cracked or damaged, and the curtains were not working properly. The A/C was extremely noisy, sounding like an old car, which made it difficult to relax or sleep comfortably. Unfortunately, the condition of the room was only part of the problem. The most disturbing incident occurred on Saturday at approximately 2:00 PM. A hotel employee came to my door accompanied by a security officer and a dog, and they proceeded to have the dog sniff throughout my room. The entire hotel had a strong smell of marijuana, and apparently my room was also checked. I have no knowledge of whether the same procedure was carried out in other rooms, but having a security officer and a dog enter the room area without any prior explanation was extremely uncomfortable and unsettling. For a hotel with The Empire’s reputation and pricing, I expected a significantly higher standard of maintenance, service, and guest experience. Overall, this was not the quality of stay I would expect from this hotel, and unfortunately, I will not be staying at The Empire Hotel again.

Do not book based off the photos as the rooms are nothing like what is shown. Lobby is beautiful + well maintained. Employees were friendly + housekeeping was good. I don't know what kind of lens they were using to shoot the photos on this site, but the rooms were tiny compared to what was shown. Beds were small and extremely uncomfortable. No walking space, bathroom so small that you had to shimmy against the wall to close the door. The gym wasn't hardly usable with more than 3 people in it. Our shower had a soap caddy falling off the wall and our conditioner bottle (attached to wall) was there upon check-in but then went missing after the 2nd day of our stay + never replaced. Old building, so to be expected to a degree, but room was just far more rundown than what I was led to believe from the hotels.com website. Regardless - the location is great and because we only had 3 travelers, it worked. I thought we had found a decent deal on a gorgeous hotel, but just turned out to be a decent deal on a beautiful lobby and rundown room. Not even saying I wouldn't stay again, just a bummer when you are led to believe you're getting something different from what you receive.
