Colhurst House

Strange property - we arrived to find a deserted house that we feared was abandoned! Then we got a text asking us to call when we were 39 mins away and someone would come to meet us - that would have been useful the day before! We were then greeted and given keys to the house and our room, which was lovely. You are very much on your own here but once we got used to that it was peaceful and comfortable. Our room had an amazing bathroom/spa in an extension that is bigger than many rooms. Would have been nice to have a few tables/chairs on the terrace at the front of the house as it is such a lovely spot.

Wicked spot to stay , we had a beautiful room with an excellent bathroom , nice comfortable bed , nothing like having a fire place in your bedroom on a cool night . In the morning even the birds didn’t wake us up so for all the people looking for comfort at a little more than a good motel room this is the spot .

The staff were friendly and helpful. The room clean and comfortable. Easy parking and walkable to the shops, cafes and pubs.

Location is great; room was clean. But the house is tired looking and requires some TLC. Bedside tables were very unstable. Charm only lasts so long, chairs were covered with sheets vs proper slipcovers. Internet was unreliable.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Colhurst House, a beautiful and charming accommodation conveniently situated near Mount Gambier's city center. The location proved to be ideal, within walking distance of various shops and restaurants. The room itself was pleasant and well-maintained, complete with the added perk of a tea and Nespresso coffee machine. While my overall experience was positive, I regretfully cannot award the hotel a perfect 5-star rating due to some issues encountered during the check-in process. After a long and tiring drive, the anticipation of a seamless check-in was dashed when we arrived and found no one at the reception desk. It turned out that the hotel had tried to contact me earlier, but since I had an international number, they were unable to reach me over the phone. A simple email or phone call (or whatapp number) with check in instructions would have alleviated this situation. Unfortunately, the situation escalated when my email to the hotel went unanswered for more than 30 minutes. Frustrated, I had no choice but to make an expensive international call, which eventually resolved the matter. Thankfully, a kind staff member promptly arrived to assist with the check-in process after the call. Another minor inconvenience was the absence of details regarding the Wi-Fi password in the room. A straightforward sign with this information would have resolved the issue without any hassle. Once again, I resorted to sending an email for the password, but,

After collecting the keys from the Mount Gambier Hotel we went to the house and parked right at the back door. The bedroom section was very nice but the bathroom was amazing. One of the best we have seen for both facilities and lighting. We needed to head back to Adelaide early the next morning so we did not have breakfast. We hope to come back.

Suite had a magnificent bathroom, spa set up, easy ground level access and a very comfortable bed

Other guests were noisy leaving doors open. Bathtub was slippery even with the mat. It would have been great if breakfast was served. Garden were nice and close to the town centre.

We were disappointed with the stay. The potential for a personalised and charming experience, they need to adopt some of bigger hotel formats. It was tired, the basin in the bathroom was blocked, and the internet kept dropping out. overal, unfortunately it was a little tired. worn.

This place was one of the best in our 33 days Australian road trip, the place was so charming, clean and full of character. We stayed in two rooms and both were fantastic, highly recommended!

Very much enjoyed our stay. Location was excellent and close to main shopping and dining precincts. Room was extremely comfortable and clean. Overall location was very safe and quiet.

Unique property dating back to late 1800’s combining very well original and modern features. We stayed in the “White Room” which was the size of our previous 2-3 accommodations put together where quality and cleanliness of the room could not be faulted. Very short walk to the town centre and one of the fascinating local sunken gardens. The town itself lacked a good variety of restaurants and many closed as both Sunday and Australia Day. The short drive to the Blue Lake and Umpherston Sinkhole more than made up for the culinary shortfalls of the area.

The check-in process was straightforward, the room was clean and comfortable with all necessities. It was an easy walk to the eateries and shopping centre, will definitely stay here again next time we visit

While the rooms were clean and tidy, the room we stayed in, The White room could do with a lick of paint and the carpet re stretched for example. Michael was great at check in, and it was quiet and within walking distance of town.

Fantastic house to stay in instead of a faceless chain. We stayed in the Tartan room and it was huge. Great experience

Colhurst house promotes itself as a B&B.. and although the rooms have been renovated some time ago they are still very comfortable. However there are a couple of issues that found rather strange.. 1. there are almost no amenities in the rooms.. 2. its promoted as a B&B but there are no Breakfast options available at all, not even a voucher or a discount for a local cafe to offset and 3 if you are in the ground-floor rooms anyone that is staying above you who moves around their room.. you will hear them very clearly. the sound insulation is very limited. Tihs is probably a result of the wooden floors and the renovation but it is something to consider. Take a Room on the 1st Floor. There are limited breakfast options near to Colhurst house but that is not the fault of Colhurst.. just that there are not many places to eat or drink unless you want to drive or walk into the town, or are ok with Hungry Jacks for breakfast. Anyway it was an ok stay.. but the options for Mt Gambier are limited anyway so its probably the best of whats available.

Large room (#4), a unique experience from a hotel/motel. No on site management/reception. No A/C in the bedroom itself but in the bathroom. No blackout drapes - room very light for sleeping. Shower had little water pressure. Interesting for a one night stay.

Stayed 1 night but wish we’d stayed longer. The staff contacted us with checkin details and were met at the property with instructions and help provided by Michael. We stayed in the white room which was very spacious with French doors onto a veranda and a lovely bathroom. Comfortable bed and a 2 seater lounge. Restaurants and shops were a 2 minute walk away. Pity the breakfast wasn’t included as it would make it perfect.

the room was too cold even with the heaters going, no comfortable chairs to sit on , huge bathroom but very uninviting and cold

Beautiful room and bathroom suite. Bathroom incl beautiful big bath and all the amenities though shower pressure was terrible…just a dribble - partner thought it was due to occupant in another suite utilising HWS at same time perhaps … ? Bed was very comfy and we were warmly welcomed upon check in.

Wonderful historic property., would have enjoyed breakfast there but dining options close by within walking district. Friendly town and loved the ambience.

This is a lovely old home. Unfortunately, they are not currently serving breakfast. However, it is only a short walk to the Commodore Hotel (a sister property) that has a wonderful restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
