This venue is primarily a weddings / functions hotel with only 5 rooms. I stayed on a Mon and Tues when the restaurant is closed but there are eateries within 1 mile. As such the hotel itself was very quiet which was perfect for me. The room was large and very well decorated. Wifi worked well. The ladies on reception were very professional and friendly. There is an honesty bar for after hours which I did not use but looked nice and a good idea. Overall I would say this hotel served a functional purpose but that would really be doing it a disservice as it's better than that. It would be nice to stay here over a weekend to enjoy the gardens and eat in the restaurant but my trip was only for business.

The Hotel is an absolute must, it’s set in secluded grounds surrounded by amazing views across the beautiful Essex countryside, the staff are absolutely fantastic and nothing was too much trouble, a special shout out to Stephen who made us feel so welcome and spent time telling us about the Hotels History, Christina and the team ensured they made our stay a real pleasure, our room was fantastic, spacious and super clean, as for the food it was incredible !!! I have eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world and the quality of the food at Downham hall rivals them all, it was real Michelin star quality, needless to say we will definitely be back and will be telling all of our friends about this real gem of a Hotel !!!! Or should we keep it to ourselves??? lol !!!!

Lovely property, friendly service, delicious breakfast and lovely scenery. Unfortunately the bedroom smelt very badly of damp. Obviously a problem/leak, which spoilt our stay somewhat as the smell was so potent. Wherever prepared the room must have known as the window was open and there was a diffuser in the room to try and mask the smell.

Room very clean and well presented. Only downside no food , breakfast or evening meals available during my stay due to weddings and proms events . They did advise me of a local pub nearby which was excellent ( the old windmill)..

Booked late and arrived at 8.30pm, nobody at reception and had to call a number, no answer, tried several times, in the end and about 1/2 hr later tied the house next door and got a response. Not ideal. Was after a quick grab and go breakfast, but had to miss this as nobody again was about. I stayed in the bridal suite and it was very warm in there even with the fan provided.

Booked late and arrived at 8.30pm, nobody at reception and had to call a number, no answer, tried several times, in the end and about 1/2 hr later tied the house next door and got a response. Not ideal. Was after a quick grab and go breakfast, but had to miss this as nobody again was about. I stayed in the bridal suite and it was very warm in there even with the fan provided.

Clean bathroom and super comfortable bed. I read before shower pressure was not good, but ours was great. Would happily recommend.

I work away most days of the week, but rarely leave a review, since most hotels just seem to blend into one. This place however, is different. The room was lovely, the staff were very friendly and the food was excellent (evening meal delicious and not one of those buffet breakfasts that I've come to loathe). Definitely worth a visit.

Our stay here was excellent in every respect. All the important things (room, shower, breakfast) were brilliant and worked as they should. The hotel is clean and not in any way tired. The staff are incredibly friendly and the value for the cost of the room exceptional. The owner works super hard as one of the active staff which definitely contributes to the overall way this hotel works so well. We only stayed the one night but would happily go back for another stay in such a lovely relaxing and friendly environment.
