Granville Hall Residence

Very happy with our recent stay here, keeping in mind this is university housing accommodation with shared bathrooms, 2 per floor - each floor has 12 rooms. No AC in rooms but windows open & fan is provided. Very quiet in the building but there is construction currently being down nearby. Location in downtown Halifax is excellent but parking around facility is pricey but that’s the case regardless of where you stay.

Great place. Excellent price for being so close to the water. Walking distance to alot of places. I would stay again. Only issue the room gets hot and stuffy. A/C would be nice. There was a fan in the room which helped. The common room, kitchen and washrooms had a/c so was comfortable.

There’s no ac at this property. It was a really hot weekend in Halifax and they only have ac in the common areas so a lot of the guests staying J’s their room doors cracked open. Laundry is also not available for short stays. Other than that, Granville hall is pretty cheap considering how much other accommodations cost in the area. It’s very clean considering the washrooms are shared. The cleaning ladies are super efficient and nice.

I liked that it was a dorm and had plenty of private bathrooms, kitchens and a living room. Although the look of the brick wall is nice it is not comfortable to lean up against on the bed in 312.

Although the common areas were air conditioned, the room was not (although the electric fan helped a bit with the heat/humidity). The TV lounge was awesome, with a large TV and access to many services. Note that soap/shampoo typically provided by hotels are not available at Granville Hall, so you will need to bring your own.

The "laundry" amenity really should not be listed for this property when advertised for hotel-like stays. If you are only staying here short-term, you will not actually be able to use the laundry, as it requires a proprietary "laundry card," which you can only purchase from a human in the office...the problem with that is no one appears to actually be in the office at this property. Posted office hours are 10-4, but checking multiple times over a two-day stay, I never saw a single person during that time period. Also, parking in the area is fairly expensive ($32 for a single overnight at a nearby garage), so if you are travelling by car, you are may not be saving any money here compared to a hotel with its own garage in the area.

The accommodation was great. Good room with mini fridge, super clean everywhere, nice showers, kitchen on every floor and comfy lounge with smart tv. Right in the city centre close to the waterfront and many cafes and bars. But the communication and check in were awful. Pretty much impossible to get a hold of someone on the phone even during office hours and thankfully we met someone from house keeping who could help us with the check in as we hadn’t received the needed email to get our codes. Altogether a comfy stay for a night or more but as everything around Canada rather expensive for what you get.

Great value to be downtown Halifax. Rooms are clean and shared facilities are good. Keep in mind that rooms will lack things like irons, hair dryers etc… towels and extra sheets are available.

There is no lift so if you have trouble walking its not for you...room had 1970 green shag carpet. Small rooms but clean..only a fan . But keep in mind its a student residence and inexpensive.

Very clean

Very disappointing. The room and especially the sheets smelled of chemicals/bleach very strongly. Both me and my guest had sore throats(and still do), headaches during the length of our stay, and were up both nights sneezing blowing our noses and coughing. I’ve never had allergies before and I equate this to the strong chemical smell in our room. We even tried turning both fans on and leaving the windows open after the second night but it didn’t help. Also both washrooms on the second floor smelled strongly of urine consistently. I had a former student recommend staying here after having a good experience and I’m disappointed to say that we didn’t experience the same.

Good location - walkable to everything you need. The duvet was quite dirty and it would be good if basic toiletries (ie soap) was provided.

If you’re a light sleeper this may not be the best option if you need a good nights rest. At night the sounds of doors opening and closing can be easily heard. Location is great and the price is good for what you’re receiving (clean facilities, a private room, contactless check-in). I will note that I did observe some pest traps set up in the room I stayed in (it would seem that many of the older buildings in downtown Halifax have their challenges with pests like ants and mice). Overall, it was a pleasant stay for a very affordable price.

Granville Hall was smack dab in the middle of downtown Halifaz. Everything we wanted to see or do was usually only a 10 minute walk away including the Citadel, the Wharf, Harbour Hopper and so much more! There is tons of food options around or bring your own to cook in the full kitchen. Bathrooms were always clean. The only problem we experienced was the plug in kept falling out of the wall so the fan wouldn't stay on during the night. And the chair for the desk needed some screws, but it wasn't dangerous, you just couldn't lift it well. Be prepared to walk and the third stairwell is a little narrow with luggae. Otherwise, an amazing stay. We felt safe with multiple security pins and the other peoppe in the dorm were friendly.

It met expectations and I had a nice stay. Check in could have been easier. You have to contact Expedia support to get your confirmation number which is required for check in. However this number is not provided directly upon booking. Secondly the shared bathrooms were very clean, however the rooms were not that clean. There were hairs from the previous guests around.

Rooms were tidy, the upstairs was warm but were given a large fan to cool the room.

Room was very small

Only stayed one night, but the small room was perfectly fine, given the price point. The shared bathroom and kitchen facilities were both clean and the entertainment lounge was great, including a nice big TV. Would definitely stay here again. The only negative was the small beds, which aren't long enough for anyone over 6 feet tall.

When booking on Expedia was very unclear that this is actually a student residence shared bathrooms, and nothing in the room, except the bed in the lamp. Description Expedia sounds more like a hotel rather than a single room residence with shared amenities

not the hostel’s fault; road construction and adjacent building renovations. BEWARE though if you presume the all hostel facilities have aircon; GH does not but it was my oversight that I missed that it did not list AC as part of amenities

Excellent location if you're attending the conference centre. Self check in was a breeze. I was worried about the shared bathrooms being all occupied in the morning at shower time - no problem. The nicest bathroom is on the first floor. The only real problem was the noise outside - brutal! There is a constant flow of garbage trucks in the morning across the street plus a major construction project right next door that has construction noise from the crack of dawn. The jackhammering and other loud noise is a real negative.

Great location. Room was a bit tight and desk a bit big for the size of the room. AC was broken and it was crazy hot.

Loved the property - clean, centrally located, cool spot. Check on was very frustrating. It was a self serve check in but the confirmation number given by Expedia wasn’t for the hotel but for Expedia. The proper confirmation number should have been easily displayed in the email. We had to call Expedia and were only able to speak with an AI agent who wasn’t very helpful. It took over 30 minutes to check in when it should have been a minute or two and the process was very frustrating. Love the spot but the check in process needs to be fixed by simply communicating the process clearly in the email from Expedia.

Online check-in was easy. Email communication was excellent. No issues with access to residence. Loved the small cozy room, it did the job for the night (zzzz). Would consider again if I go back to Halifax.

Great room for the location and price! Absolutely no one on-site or accessible when you reach out to the contact information (office never opened) to support anything, including access to laundry, which is advertised.

Service and staff was disappointing. Signage and email information stated staff was on duty yet no one was there. Upon phoning for staff message said staff was available, but where!? This was frustrating and disappointing.

Convenient location downtown. Online check-in, and combination codes worked well. Room was quieter than we had thought it would be. Everything seemed clean. A small repair was necessary in the bathroom. ..and there was nowhere at all to lay down any objects in there, such as shave kit, which was a little inconvenient. But otherwise good.

We didn't have any towels on the second night of our stay and asked someone where can we get some more. They pretty much said that on the weekends, it's fend for yourselves as there's no organization/no weekend staff. Maybe a good idea to get more employees or up the organization on weekends. Apart from that it was really nice, cozy, quiet and we felt safe. We'll definitely try to book again when we come back to Nova Scotia

Our room was great, clean, quiet, save for a bit of noise on the street. It was great to have a common kitchen to use and save money on eating out. The bathrooms are a bit small/cramped on our floor, so if you have mobility issues or are tall, you may have a bit of a tough time. It was a quick walk to the waterfront and many different restaurants and shops. Public transportation access was easy and made it simple to get everywhere we wanted to go downtown. Would definitely recommend! For anyone booking through expedia, make sure you pay attention to the check in details for confirmation codes, I had to contact support to find the correct code, as the codes are different for the Expedia confirmation code and the residence's code.

Good but ... Let's start with the pros. It's a student residence and as long as you understand that when you book, you will know what to expect. The rooms are well furnished with a comfortable bed, a mini-fridge and a desk and wardrobe. The shared bathrooms are clean and well-functioning. Each floor is also equipped with a kitchen. The location is perfect and you are in the literal center of Halifax with many attractions just a short walking distance. However, there are cons. There are no staff on site at all, aside from the cleaning people who come in the morning. There is an office at the entrance with posted hours but no one was ever there during my 5-day stay. I could only communicate via text message with a support line, which I needed to do so upon arrival, as the codes they gave me did not work and it took nearly 40 minutes before it was resolved. Apparently, non-working codes are a regular thing, as they have a sign on the door with instructions in the event it happens, but which begs the question, if so many people have issues with codes, why can't they fix their own system? As well, their support staff have very poor public relation skills and tend to not respond if you ask them a question they don't know the answer to, nor do they offer apologies for any inconveniences. However, despite these cons, the stay was still comfortable.

Best to check in online before you get there. The self service terminal was a real pain.

The building is very centrally located and the room itself was very nice, as was the kitchen area. Bathroom also very convenient and clean. However, a couple of points: 1) There is no customer service, despite a notice on the office door saying staff will be there 10-4 on weekdays. I wanted a couple of things - to borrow a hairdryer, and to see if I could leave my suitcase for a few hours on the last day. But there was no one to ask. I emailed the address on my booking confirmation, but never received a reply. I was reluctant to phone as it would have counted as a call from the UK on my cellphone plan. If there are no onsite staff during summer holidays, you need to take down the notice saying that there are. And if staff don't answer emails, remove the email address from the booking confirmation. But relying on a mobile phone number alone is in my view not adequate. 2) The room was quite noisy, due to construction work going on directly outside. But presumably this is a temporary problem. 3) Another visitor was also looking for a hairdryer. I think this is definitely something Granville Hall should provide. Perhaps build it into the wall of the bathroom, as many hotels do. 4) In the end, I had to pay a completely separate business to hold my luggage for a few hours - an extra cost which would probably have been avoidable if I'd been able to speak to someone. Not ideal.

Great spot in downtown HFX. walkable and close to nightlife, restaurants, water. Very clean and quiet and contactless entry was super easy !

It was close to the Boardwalk, a few minutes away. Quite enjoyable.

Great for solo, female travellers. Clean shared bathroom and kitchen, small but comfy single rooms and within walking distance to everything! Great food choices around, short walk to the boardwalk. This inn is commute-friendly too as bus stops are nearby, and easy to grab taxi, uber.

Great clean place we stayed two separate times when we arrived in Halifax and left. Perfect location for exploring downtown and transit to airport is close as well as car rentals. Very clean and quiet which was so appreciated. We will absolutely stay again on future trips to Nova Scotia!
