Quirky but very nice and comfortable. Nelio was extremely helpful. Parking a bit tight but nothing to worry about. Short walk into a lovely little town with plenty of shops and eateries.

This is a very small, not very modern place. If you like things a bit quirky, this might be perfect for you, but for me I wasn't keen on turning up at the stated check in time to find the front door locked and no one answering. I left and came back and did manage to find someone to let me in who was very chatty throughout check in. The room was clean and comfortable, but up two flights of extremely narrow stairs and had a bathroom which had no shower, not even a handheld over the bathtub. I don't remember seeing any info about this during booking, had I known I would have tried to opt for a room with a shower as I can't take baths at the moment due to fresh tattoos. The car park is miniscule, understandably given the hotel's location, but with eight rooms and only enough space for six cars - three of them blocked in by the others - I imagine there have been parking issues in the past. The idea of breakfast items in the mini fridge so you can sort yourself out in the morning is a reasonably good one, although the toaster in the cupboard did feel like a bit of a fire hazard. Overall it was a decent one-night stay for a fair price if you don't mind a battle to actually get in the door in the first place.

Candlesticks is 4old houses converted into a hotel and restaurant so the layout is nicely quirky and charming. A far cry from all those sterile modern places which all look the same. I liked the room which was equipped with a kettle, toaster, a small fridge and plenty of stuff to make my own breakfast and a bottle of fresh milk 😁. As I had to be at work at 7.0 am this was much appreciated as I often do not get breakfast as so many places don’t serve it till 7.30 or 8.00! Free parking directly outside abd fast free WiFi. They were very friendly abd helpful and my room was serviced and restocked each day which many hotels don’t do post Covid Had dinner in the restaurant which was excellent and not expensive. Overall an excellent stay in my opinion. If you want shiny modern and impersonal it might not be to your taste but I reckon it was an excellent place to stay. I just hope I get another job in Stamford.

A small very welcoming hotel tucked away near the centre with a very friendly welcoming host. Made up of several Medieval and old Cottages linked together leaving it with multiple staircases to reach the rooms. The bar is very cosy and friendly and the restaurant spacious, spreading over several levels and an excellent wine list. It is an easy walk down to the meadows and bridges of Stamford. Very quiet as off the main road but close to the Bull & Swan. Off street parking is a real bonus in Stamford

Tucked away in a quiet part of central Stamford, our stay was comfortable and the room was clean. A full (cold - cereal, toast, tea coffee etc.) breakfast was available in the room. There is a small bar and restaurant, but they're not open on Sundays - not an issue as there are plenty of both available in Stamford town. Our room was on the second floor and there is no lift, but the owner kindly helped us up the narrow stairs with the suitcase. I couldn't make the shower hot and cold mixer work (but that could have been me of course!) so I had baths, hardly the end of the world! A good value-for-money bolt-hole for two nights to attend a wedding nearby.

The property is right in the heart of Stamford and having a parking area is a real bonus. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and tidy and perfectly adequate for single occupancy, maybe on the small side for two. I loved the provision of breakfast items but in my room, although there was a table, there was no seating for two people, only a vanity stool. The en-suite bathroom was spacious, with shower supplies and fresh white towels provided, but no working shower over the bath, and on the whole it could do with some maintenance and modernisation. In spite of this seemingly critical review my friend and I had a pleasant stay and would use Candlesticks again for its location, convenience and reasonable price.

The hotel was in a good location and there was parking. The person that met us was friendly enough. The whole place could do with bringing up to a better standard, especially as we paid quite a lot. The bar wasn’t open and it was very dark in there. Breakfast was cereal, yogurt and toast which was in the room.

This was a really comfortable room with everything you need for a night or two’s stay. Easy parking and unexpected breakfast included made this really great value for money. The owner was very affable and helpful and we had time to chat. Just a pity that I came the night the restaurant was closed otherwise would have eaten there and cracked a bottle of Torbreck. Town is a 10 minute stroll with a ton of options.

The owner was very welcoming and appeared from somewhere to check me in fairly promptly. He did everything to help me; even my strange request to borrow a tin opener. Breakfast was left in the room, I liked this self service. The room was clean with supreme white bed linen and the bathroom nice; a tad dated but for the price I can’t complain. Unfortunately, the single bed felt lopsided, so I didn’t sleep well. Probably due to the old walls of the house, so not the owners fault. It was a hot night but fortunately there was a fan in the wardrobe. All essentials are in place. Location is superb. Such a beautiful, old town and picturesque walk; Like stepping back in time. I really enjoyed my stay. It felt safe and relaxing!

I feel bad leaving this review as the owner was so nice but the room i stayed in was cold, drafty, very out dated and grubby. The bed was so uncomfortable i woke up several times at night and i sleep like a log. Breakfast was in the room and was a nice touch. Like others have said the price reflects the quality so dont expect to much.

The carpet was not hoovered, the wall paper was coming off the wall, the mirror needed a clean, but the man was friendly and polite, The view was very nice, and the bathroom was good and the bed was comfortable, The location was spot on, So we would still go back, and great value for the money, but breakfast was disappointing, but we didn't pay a lot,

Very pleasant overnight stay at Candlesticks! The owner was lovely, very welcoming and helpful. My room was spotless, the only down side was it not having a shower but it did have a bath and as I never seem to find time for a bath it made a nice change.

Lovely friendly hotel. Will definitely book in for food next time. Good continental breakfast in the room. Rooms clean, well equipped and comfy bed. Host was very welcoming and enjoyed the evening in the well stocked bar. Would definitely recommend.

We had a lovely stay at Candlesticks and would definitely stay again - comfortable, clean and quiet room, along with a friendly, responsive host. It's very close to all that Stamford has to offer and very convenient for Burghley House, plus has plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs nearby. The breakfast provided in our room was spot on!

We were in the top room. Room was comfortable enough and location was excellent. Shower didn't really work and the holder was broken so you couldn't attach it to the wall. The breakfast provided was in the room - cereals, some bread for toast and packets of butter, and jam. Was nice enough but not what we had expected. There was nice coffee and a cafatiere.

The hotel is in need of updating, there’s no doubt about that. We booked a twin room and the beds were uncomfortable - the mattresses need replacing. The wallpaper is coming off in places, the shower door and bathroom door didn’t close properly. The stairways are narrow. There’s some mould around. The breakfast was ok and there were lots of options (pain au chocolat, weetabix, mini cereal box, OJ, milk, water, jam, bread, yoghurts). You get what you pay for but equally if you stayed in a Travelodge/Premier Inn it would probably be the same price and nicer. The location was good and there was some hotel parking. The setup is just a bit weird as it’s not a “normal” hotel. So don’t have high expectations and you’ll be fine. Also, it was hot and there were no fans and it’s surprisingly quite a busy road and the churches ring their bells from 7.30am on a Sunday! 😂ENJOY!

Very accommodating staff. The manager/owner moved his own car out of the car park to make room for our car. The room was a bit tired and there was no shower in the bathroom. Breakfast was in a fridge in the room which needed to be defrosted. The bed was comfortable though.
Very accommodating staff. The manager/owner moved his own car out of the car park to make room for our car. The room was a bit tired and there was no shower in the bathroom. Breakfast was in a fridge in the room which needed to be defrosted. The bed was comfortable though.

The very mixed reviews of this place concerned us but in an expensive town, it was a reasonably-priced option in a decent location. People who want a smart room can find plenty of options at twice the price. The room was tired, the shower didn't work (but the bath was fine), there were 3-4 flights of narrow stairs to carry our suitcases up and down, but the room was clean and the owner was very friendly and helpful (even carried our cases up for us), once he showed up. It was a bit annoying to have to phone him and wait outside 10 minutes for him to arrive. We had driven for almost 3 hours and I was desperate for the loo. But at least it wasn't raining. We didn't eat there, but the fixed-price menu looked very reasonable at £30 for three courses. Overall, considering the price, it offered a decent location within easy walking distance of the centre of Stamford and free parking adjacent the property. You pays your money and makes your choice.

We liked everything about our room and the hotel. Getting in was a bit difficult but once sorted - excellent. Very friendly and helpful and kind man who let us in and showed us to the room. My only quibble is with the shower: without doubt the most feeble shower facility ever! It took well over 5 minutes to get hot water: I never used the cold tap at all! Disappointing Everything else - wonderful! Thank you! M. Mackenzie. We hope to come again.

Excellent location close to town centre in an old building in a quiet area. Room 6 was at the top of narrow stairs and rather small but comfortable. Large bathroom BUT poor hot water pressure (useless shower needs specific shower unit). Main oddity, was that breakfast was provided in a cupboard in the room (everything provided but only one chair in room so breakfast was literally "in bed"). This was a shame as there appeared to be a nice restaurant in the basement of the building.

I have seen many good reviews for this hotel and frankly only a few bad ones. However, I feel like the bad ones are related to a particular room (no2). We had this room and it really was very poor. No complaints on cleanliness but it was tiny and only a narrow gap to get to the bathroom. The bathroom had a bath but no shower, and took a long time to get to a reasonable depth. Just had to wash in the morning as running a bath would take too long. There wasn't anywhere to put clothes as it seems like the old wardrobe is used as a mini mini kitchenette for the breakfast stuff. Totally bizarre and frankly not really worth doing as anyone booking thinking they are getting breakfast will probably be very disappointed. I really am not sure if this breakfast provision applies to all rooms as no one really mentions it. The tiny room could also really do with decorating and the bathroom definitely needs updating.

THE best host I've ever stayed with. Attentive beyond belief. From meeting us and bringing our bags to the room then joining us for drinks at the bar and offering us so much local information. Didn't get chance to try the restaurant but smelt terrific all the time. Delightful stay, thank you.

The manager went out of his way to make our visit enjoyable. We had seen there was a film in town we wanted to see and he magicked up a tasty pasta dish early for us. And good advice and a map for a walk about this lovely town for the morning.

Stayed for a four day break. Ideally situated for public transport. Train station a five minute walk away, bus station approx 10 minutes via the common. Very quiet location. Excellent host. Didn't eat in restaurant but menu looked good. Lovely market town with plenty of restaurants and bars. Would definitely stop at Candlesticks again.

The property is right in the heart of Stamford and having a parking area is a real bonus. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and tidy and perfectly adequate for single occupancy, maybe on the small side for two. I loved the provision of breakfast items but in my room, although there was a table, there was no seating for two people, only a vanity stool. The en-suite bathroom was spacious, with shower supplies and fresh white towels provided, but no working shower over the bath, and on the whole it could do with some maintenance and modernisation. In spite of this seemingly critical review my friend and I had a pleasant stay and would use Candlesticks again for its location, convenience and reasonable price.

We had a lovely stay at Candlesticks and would definitely stay again - comfortable, clean and quiet room, along with a friendly, responsive host. It's very close to all that Stamford has to offer and very convenient for Burghley House, plus has plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs nearby. The breakfast provided in our room was spot on!

This is a small family run hotel and resturant. The owner is the chef, and the food is excellent. He has an extensive wine list, so if you are a connoisseur of wine- then this is the place for you! The resturant is amazing, beautifully lit with candles. The owner is a lovely person, and made my partners birthday weekend one which we will not forget. Thank you so much for your friendliness, kindness and hospitality.

We were in the top room. Room was comfortable enough and location was excellent. Shower didn't really work and the holder was broken so you couldn't attach it to the wall. The breakfast provided was in the room - cereals, some bread for toast and packets of butter, and jam. Was nice enough but not what we had expected. There was nice coffee and a cafatiere.

Candlesticks is 4old houses converted into a hotel and restaurant so the layout is nicely quirky and charming. A far cry from all those sterile modern places which all look the same. I liked the room which was equipped with a kettle, toaster, a small fridge and plenty of stuff to make my own breakfast and a bottle of fresh milk 😁. As I had to be at work at 7.0 am this was much appreciated as I often do not get breakfast as so many places don’t serve it till 7.30 or 8.00! Free parking directly outside abd fast free WiFi. They were very friendly abd helpful and my room was serviced and restocked each day which many hotels don’t do post Covid Had dinner in the restaurant which was excellent and not expensive. Overall an excellent stay in my opinion. If you want shiny modern and impersonal it might not be to your taste but I reckon it was an excellent place to stay. I just hope I get another job in Stamford.

The hotel is situated close to the town and has a small car park. We arrived just after 3 and we were told our rooms weren't ready (awaiting laundry)so we left our luggage in the bar area and came back later.. The room was small and crowded and the shower provided a very limited stream of hot water. Breakfast consists of helping yourself from a cupboard in the room, where there is a toaster and fridge, (unless you take the optional extra of paying £15 per person for a cooked breakfast). Breakfast for us consisted of one slice of white bread per day per person and a quarter of pint of milk per day per person, and 100ml of orange juice.The cereal choice was Weetabix or Coco pops. Yoghurt also provided. Apart from our arrival the bar area was padlocked off and no staff were present. The whole experience was totally unsatisfactory and must have been like what essential workers had to do when working away during the most severe part of the lockdown. Very poor value for money, we stayed in a neighbouring town where a full English breakfast was provided and a much more comfortable and spacious room for slightly less money.

The hotel was in a good location and there was parking. The person that met us was friendly enough. The whole place could do with bringing up to a better standard, especially as we paid quite a lot. The bar wasn’t open and it was very dark in there. Breakfast was cereal, yogurt and toast which was in the room.

We booked this Hotel as it had a bar and restaurant and looked good value. The owner of the property met us on arrival, gave us a complimentary drink and was personable. On enquiry of when the bar and restaurant would be open, we were told that it would not be over the duration of our stay as they are closed on a Monday and work was being done on the Sunday (the day of our arrival). The room, although was clean but could not be described as basic. The room itself needed updating, the bathroom suite looked liked it had never been updated for the last 50 years (sink had a crack), could not have a shower because the shower did not have any pressure when using the hot water(we were told that it was the water board’s fault), the pressure through bath and sink taps were fine). The bed was not comfortable, could not move without the whole bed shaking). Even the fan needed a dust but was so cheap, it did not circulate the air. Breakfast was included, and we expected it to be a cooked or continental breakfast in a dining area rather than provided in packets in the room. No Wi-Fi code visible and we did not see anyone to ask. Overall, it was not a great stay.

This is an affordable gem in the centre of Stamford. The en suite room was ultra clean and a decent size with a fridge containing breakfast items and free parking. The owner was exceptionally helpful and even dropped us off at our party. We will return when we are visiting again. Thankyou!
