Escaping to the country has never been more fun and magical. The resident robin and all his many friends keep you in that chilled mindset. The town of Rye was 10 mins by car and full of historical charm. It was even being used for filming while we visited. We walked from Rye to Camber sands along the cycle path and there are frequent buses back.

We really enjoyed our stay in The Hideout. Not quite sure what to expect when advertised as “off grid”, however we were pleasantly surprised. Our hut was exceptionally clean and well stocked upon check-in (kitchen essentials, wood/firefighters etc) which is contact-free. It overlooks countryside for miles, plenty pheasants and grazing sheep metres away - something anyone bringing a dog should be aware of. The external areas feel secluded, however not secure, plenty of space for a well behaved pooch to roam. The hut itself is a decent size for a couple, good kitchenette facilities and very comfy sofa. Where it falls down slightly is in a few small details: we found the bed incredibly uncomfortable -creeks and as the pictures suggest, you need to crawl on all fours to reach it. The external areas need some investment: unable to sit on the bedroom terrace as no seats (plus falling acorns will take you out), the main deck requires a bench seat so you can snuggle whilst enjoying a glass of English Sparkling, or a decent size dining table that matches the deck size. Sadly the fire pit area smelt of sewage when a breeze whipped by... being picky, we’d of liked a hand towel and a hook in the bathroom as we were reluctantly required to place our towels on the toilet seat. We would still highly recommend this hut for a relaxing stay.

Beautiful views and great communication from the owner on how to find it and access your hut. We stayed in The Hive for one night and it was a little dusty, everything needed a deep clean. It didn’t ruin our trip, and would visit again in the hope this was a one off error.

I expect a rustic ‘off-grid’ hut to be reasonably basic but to have a fairly dirty interior I was less enthused about. The sofa with bits of old food on it. Looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for a long time. Dirty and dusty floors. Dirty grubby windows. Dead bugs in the window frames. Surfaces covered in grime around the sink area for example. Old food left on the sink drainer (bits of broccoli - not ours!). Even the kettle for the stove top was missing its ‘whistle’. Cutlery drawer grubby etc. The wet room a little tired, needs refreshing. Poor lighting. No mirror. No extraction for the steam meant it stayed pretty wet in there all day. Using the toilet after a shower meant you have damp and wet clothes that easily touch the dirty floor. The drain smelled too. No decent supply of hand soap provided. Empty bottles of hand soap, yes. But to use - barely any. No milk provided in the gas fridge. But some old tea bags and sugar plus sachets of coffee stuffed into a jar found in a cupboard for your welcome to the property. The bedroom area: no storage options for clothing. Some lighting not working either. Pillows a mix of lumpy and squishy. “The Hut” needs some care and attention to make it feel special. It didn’t feel special for us unfortunately. We have stayed in much better and more comfortable Shepherds Huts. It could be really special but it just isn’t. We booked for 2-nights but only stayed 1-night as it was so disappointing.
