American Inn Chesapeake - Portsmouth

Nonsmoking room smelled like cigar smoke, large crack in bathtub, mold on bathroom ceiling, person who runs check in was there when we checked in and then disappeared for at least 30 minutes--we needed an additional towel (only provided two and the reservation was for three people), the ice machine was broken, the refrigerator did not get cold, it was very noisy and much use of weed. I finally got a hold of the guy by phone to ask for a towel and to ask about ice availability. He brought both down about an hour later--well after we had gone to bed and repeatedly knocked on the door until I finally gave up to answer it. He apologized and said he was working alone for which I am sympathetic but the place was downright gross. Next time we'll sleep in our car. :(

Clean. Needs renovation. Ice machine not working. Door difficult to open and close. Bed very comfortable. Had handicap bars in bathtub. Handicap toilet seat. Mini fridge. Mini microwave. Quiet. Very nice and helpful desk attendant. Helped me to my room and assisted with door. I would stay again. Price right with condition of room. Nice tv with cable.

1) The wifi scarcely worked, which ended up costing my two sons and me a lot of wasted time looking around for places that we could have found quickly on the web. Labor Day weekend was my only vacation, and I had to waste hours driving around trying to find a bike shop because the wifi was so terrible. We had to cancel part of our plans as a result. This also meant that I could not join a Zoom meeting I had planned to attend Sunday night. 2) The lighting in the room was terrible. A free-standing lamp was plugged into an outlet that did not work, which meant that the only way to read or do any close work on the pull-out table was by opening the window to daylight during the daytime or lie on the bed at night. 3) This "nonsmoking room" had obviously been converted from a smoking room, and the fact that I could tell that automatically means that the conversion was not well done. 4) Every morning I had to go ask for towels, because we were given two for three people. 5) The motel has no pool and offers no Continental breakfast.

The Ice Machine was not working. Had cigarette burns in the comforters. Felt kind of run down, but didn't feel unsafe. If youre looking for amenities and comfort i wouldnt recommand this place. If youre just looking to rest your head for a few hours or use the bed for a few hours this place isnt too bad.

I never have left a review before, but this place was the worst place ive ever been at. I was afraid to touch everything. Mold, broken pieces, Spider webs, odor. Hair still in tub and shower. No fan in bathroom, AC barely cooled room. Musty, dusty, disgusting. No amenities other than a refrigerator and microwave which fuctioned moderately.

Read several reviews before I booked and there was about the same for bad and good. Wanted to try a new place outside of va beach because I’m just here for work. Front looked decent ish. Got to the window to check in and the lady was very nice. Pulled around back and it was another world. Got into my room And just plain terrible. The mold and paint peeling, nasty sticky carpet, 80’s bedding, gross bathroom. I was tired and figured I’d lay on the bed clothed not even taking off my shoes and at least get some sleep. Didn’t feel like taking a shower at that point was a good idea. Fell asleep to be woken up at 12am to no power. Called it then, got my stuff and tried to sleep in my truck the rest of the night. Absolutely no go, I would not bring my family to a place like this none the less let my dog be in this place. Definitely do not stay here, I don’t know how places like this don’t get shut down.

Everything old and dirty

No hangers in room or luggage rack or tissues in bathroom. The carpet needed a vacuuming. There were cobwebs in various areas of the room, and spilled soda in one of the drawers. I would not recommend this motel, nor will I be coming back

The bathroom were old and peeling from the tub, a dead bug on the AC, chair in the room moldy and the plugs on the floor moldy.

Room had chipped furniture, mold on the lamp shades, had to cross a grassy median to get to the room. On a positive note, the AC worked well.

Both the room and the bathroom were clean and bed was cozy. I got some good rest.

They have perfected how to not spend anything on maintenance or upgrades, but still charge the unwitting traveler.

I booked a non-smoking room for a trip with my wife. We were given a room that wasn't cleaned and smelled like weed... not talking about the chipped paint all around in the bathroom. So I returned to the reception and asked for a different room. They changed the room with no issues and another one was cleaner and better maintained. But still, for a non-smoking room, a smell of weed was there. All rooms around that one were non-smoking rooms so I'd not expect the scent to come from the rooms nearby.. but who knows what people do? So this is an OK stay. Be mindful that one side of the hotel is facing a very busy highway...

What I liked about it most it felt like a get away. And the bed was comfortable. I didn't like that they didn't have coffee makers in the rooms.

Stayed here 2 evenings, not too many issues aside from leftover belongings like fake eyelashes stuck in the bathroom, a sock and some hair. Our rooms were non-smoking though one reeked of tobacco when we first arrived. Not the hotels fault that someone smoked in it but we wonder if it was checked prior. I have no words for how bad that place is never have i ever stayed in a place as bad as that couldnt even sleep without flies and the beds were rock hard and the peep hole in the door was gone

The staff was very nice and friendly (the female staff and elderly man who was part of the cleanning staff), there was however a middlenage gentleman that waas not always in the greatest of moods and did not ever honor anyknind of discount price regaedless how many nights we stayed. The way the housing situation is right now you would think discounted rates would be honored a little better. Overall the numerous times we stayed i was pleased.

Illegally turned down my service animal from stsying in my room with me and i had to sleep with him in my truck instead and my employee took the room

Manager helped us , he was very nice and professional

Good place to lay your head, very nice people at the desk. We enjoyed our stay.

I prepaid for my hotel reservation. At check in the hotel says my card was declined and that I needed to pay with another card at a higher rate than I originally reserved. I showed my prepaid receipt but they wouldnt give me my room. Would not recommend.

The last that checked me in was wonderful n very very friendly ..I would most definitely stay again ..

We booked this as we were traveling because the pictures looked good. When we got there at 10 pm it felt very unsafe for our family to stay. We ended up finding a different place on down the road.

Very unsanitary. Poufs left in the shower. Sex toy left on a table under the counter. Right next to a gun range. The fridge was dirty and not working. Never again. And the bed was on a metal squeaky frame.

Everything was great the staff and everybody just have to drive for the dining thank you
