The Matrine Inn is a pretty amazing bed and breakfast -- with an actual breakfast! The rooms are gorgeous and you are right across the street from Monterey Bay and just minutes from downtown. But this is for a very specific type of traveler, so there are few things missing that can be a little inconvenient for some. There is no television in the room I stayed in, no microwave, no mini-fridge - so if you need these types of amenities, plan ahead. They do have wifi and it worked fairly well. There are also great public areas where you can play chess, ping pong, or pool, and a gorgeous semi-outdoor space.

In town for a friends birthday. Driven by location many times thought we’d try. If you don’t get one of the 8 spots in front you have to find a spot on the street. Host super friendly gave us a tour. Room was quaint with a great view and quiet. Breakfast was yummy and old school served on silver platter. They have a afternoon happy hour wine and eat room gets a plate of cheese salami. The place is dated could use some TLC .

Charming hotel, full of authentic furnishings. The Walnut Room, where we stayed, opens onto a lovely courtyard with a fountain and koi pond. Hors d'oeuvre plate in the evening and a fabulous cooked to order breakfast are highlights. The property is showing its age a bit and the room was a bit cramped for two, but this is a unique experience that shouldn’t be missed.

What a wonderful and charming place!! Staff was impeccable with service to customers. Clean and comfortable and close to the aquarium and cannery row. The view was spectacular, the Pacific Ocean looked wonderful from our room. The gardens were enchanting and the breakfast outstanding.

The inn retains the old character of the property. The location is excellent. We enjoyed the pool table and ping pong table too.

Great place to stay for a nice quiet weekend in Monterey Bay. Easy walk to aquarium and shopping/restaurants. Amazing views of the bay. Sit, drink coffee and watch the wildlife play in the bay right out front.

The staff and breakfast were excellent. The room we stayed in was small and had too much furniture for its size. The outside area was somewhat run down - there were gardeners doing their best to get things cleaned up. The location and views to the north (if you have a room that faces north) are spectacular - very close to Lover's Point and the coastal walkway.

Lovely place. They had us park on the street but we ended up getting a ticket so just be mindful where you park. Over all the place is so cute and perfect location.

They only have parking for 9 cars under the old wooden trellises, right on Ocean Blvd. We had to park on the street because the lot was mostly full except for an area where the wood was rotten and ready to fall. We didn’t want to risk that falling on our car. You have to take a few flights stairs to get to the front door of the Inn. It took awhile to get our luggage and other items up there. We checked in with Pearl, the Inn Keeper, and she gave us a tour of the property and showed us to our room. After that we never saw her again. They offered a full service breakfast with a set menu with several options to pick from. Breakfast is offered 8:00am to 10:00am. The breakfast was good. They have a set menu with a variety of options. All the Inn staff were very friendly, hard working and accommodating. The Inn is located very close to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the wharf, which was convenient. The property is definitely old and is in dire need of repairs and upgrades. The bed in our room was awful. So uncomfortable that it made our backs hurt. The bathroom was also in need of renovation. It looked dirty on the bottom of the shower probably because of wear and tear and age. Also nobody ever answered the phone when I called to ask a question before our check in date.

MOLD and AGGRESSIVE STAFF. 🚩 From the start, there were red flags. On the day of check-in, a staff member named Abdul repeatedly called me asking when we would arrive, even though I clearly stated we were on a road trip and expected to check in between 8–9 p.m. He called again around 5 p.m., and I gave him the same ETA. Then, at 8:30 p.m., he called again and said we needed to provide payment over the phone or we wouldn’t be allowed to check in. When I asked if someone would be at the front desk, he said no, because he had to leave. I asked him what time he left, and he said 8 p.m.—then followed that with, “I had to leave at 8 and I’m staying here because of you.” It only got worse from there. Nathaniel became confrontational and racist, going so far as to block my husband from leaving the building, harass him repeatedly, and call him “pathetic.” He even told my husband to “clean it up like a real man” after our 7-month-old baby spit up. The way he treated us was not only unprofessional — it was hostile and discriminatory. To top it off, our room had black mold in the shower — not minor mildew, but visible, dangerous mold — which is unacceptable under any circumstances, let alone when you have an infant in the room. Yet, somehow, this place has a plaque stating it passed health code inspections. Either that’s false, or something has gone seriously wrong since. Nathanial also dismissed this even though the facility is inhabitable!

The hotel is very old, nice if you want to experience 1800s but there is no water coming out of our shower. Three nights we stayed here, I felt dirty not getting shower especially after we hiked. There is hole on the floor as well.

super quaint and cute! Wish the shower was tall people friendly for the Monterey room, but the room itself was stunning. The courtyard needs a bit of a clean up, and the complimentary coffee and water were cold. Other than that we loved the view from breakfast and from the front of the inn! Very picturesque.

This place was absolutely beautiful! It was clean and very pleasant. The staff was informative and very nice. I will be back to this location next time we visit the area. I highly recommended the stay here

The breakfast was excellent, with a daily changing menu in the dining roo overlooking the beautiful ocean, The view from the basement and second floor view rooms was fantastic, and the location was convenient, quiet, and very relaxing, surrounded by lovely antique decor.

The location was spectacular…walking distance to cannery row and also dining options. I’ve been to bed and breakfasts before and I was expecting the period furniture and wallpaper. I think there was a missed opportunity for a few upgrades. There aren’t tvs in rooms, only a communal one (weird). We had a room with a view of the ocean but seating was horrible. One antique chair that semi reclined and another that was a basic dining chair. Not great for lounging in room. Also, our room was above a workshop and at 7am each morning they would slide doors open and start working which woke us up. Breakfast was basic but fine. When we were checking out couldn’t find anyone to give the key to so that was awkward wandering around calling for someone. Bathroom door didn’t close all the way either without slamming it, deferred maintenance needed.

This is the cutest hotel, with the best staff. What a lovely experience. Right on the ocean, old Hollywood charm, delicious breakfast and the best part was a in-room wood burning fireplace that they provide wood and matches for you. I will return to this place again! 10/10!

Charming hotel. Rooms were a bit odd with very low furniture that was not especially comfortable or easy to sit in. Very noisy bed when either of us moved at all. But the views are amazing. The location is super convenient to the waterfront, aquarium and Cannery Row plus a lot of very good dining options. The Breakfast was very tasty and the staff were very friendly and service oriented.

We stayed in the Captains room with a wood-burning fireplace. They replaced the wood and cleaned the fireplace each day, and we sat in front of the fire and read/enjoyed each other’s company. The bed was firm and comfortable and the room was very quiet. The breakfast was lovely with different options, and the servers were very attentive. The dining room was right in front of the ocean and we could see seals poking their heads above water as we dined. We’d love to come back and try different rooms with different decor/furniture.

We stayed in the Edith Head Room and had a magical time. The "partial" ocean view was more ocean than I expected, and the wood burning fireplace was very cool. The staff had the fireplace set with wood and kindling, all we had to do was light a match and enjoy. The decor of the room and common spaces was very cool, felt like we were in a nice museum. It was magical to wake up to the sound of the tidal movements and ocean birds.

I am so so glad we chose to stay here and we will absolutely be returning. We stayed in the McClatchy room and loved it, the bed was nice and firm and the furnishings were adorable - like stepping into another era and all beautifully maintained. The highlight was the breakfast service (served from 8 am to 10 am) in the front dining hall with panoramic ocean views and tons of visible otters. They even provide several pairs of binoculars near the windows for guests to share so the views were even more enjoyable. The food was delicious, they have a different special each day and we got to enjoy the Castroville eggs on Friday, custard French toast on Saturday, and corn cake with bacon and eggs on Sunday. They also have coffee and ice water available in the lobby all day. Of note, the rooms do not include microwave, mini fridge, or television so be sure to plan accordingly when packing! We brought a travel projector and had no problems. Tons of outlets for chargers etc. Walking distance to the aquarium and cannery row shops. We really enjoyed Hula’s Grill for dinner while we were in town! Can’t wait to back. :)

This is a wonderful property. I choose it for the proximity to the beach and walking distance to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Check in was simple and we were delighted with the room and the dining room as well as the lovely sitting room across from our room (Art Deco). Breakfast was delicious and the dining room overlooked the Bay. Every breakfast was different and delicious, and the coffee was good and strong. The staff was friendly also.

Beautiful view and easy access to the ocean! Breakfast was absolutely delicious and the service was excellent, the ocean view while dinning was another plus!

This hotel is lovely. Period furniture and antiques and rooms. Bed was comfortable. We had full ocean view and it was worth the extra $$. Customer service was excellent. Don't stay at this inn expecting to watch the latest movie or chill watching tv as there is no tv in the room... We certainly did not miss it and just enjoyed quiet evenings reading after dark. Great location and parking. Breakfast was served elegantly but the food was average. Overall, a nice stay.
