Island House Hotel

I stayed 3 nights with my mom in September: I paid for us to each have our own Queen rooms. Historic, refurbished hotel with porch, rocking chairs, 2 fire-pits & beautiful lake views. Room issues on check in: bathtub was not clean; AC unit was not working properly. No complimentary water in rooms: water bottles in rooms were expensive: $10 each! There was a water refill station, but it was inconveniently located far from the rooms. Rooms have Fridges, But no microwave. Front desk staff and porters were polite and efficient during check in and check out. WiFi connectivity was strong. Outside hot tub and Heated indoor pool are located on property, but they are in a pool house area with pool house area being an outer building not directly connected to the hotel. No robes or pool towels were provided at the pool or hot tub, so this is not user friendly in colder conditions which sometimes occur even in late summer or early fall in this northern Michigan climate on Mackinac island. No complimentary breakfast- morning breakfast cost at the hotel’s restaurant, 1852 Grill Room, was expensive in $20 range for basic eggs and sausage. On the plus side, the restaurant was upscale with beautiful views of the harbor and the lake, a piano player at dinner and a bar. For dinner, service was good: expensive food was well prepared the cost for 2 people at dinner with tip came out to over $100 for only 2 entrees - 1 fish entree, and 1 special entree (wiener schnitzel ) - and 2 alcohol drinks.

Always a great stay at the Island House. Beautiful property and grounds. Awesome pool.

Room is spacious and clean. Beds were small and wish we could have gotten a cot. Outdoor hot tub was fantastic. Indoor hot tub felt dirty. Overall we love this day and especially the icehouse barbecue for lunch.

Nice stay, unfortunately the hot tub was broken, something that I discovered after I walked the entire perimeter of the island. Otherwise I was very satisfied with the accommodations and the proximity to the "downtown." Would stay again.

We loved our beautiful room! Also, didn't realize there was a hot tub there until we checked in, and it was wonderful, especially on the rainy and cold day we had. Very clean, both the hot tub and the room. Definitely would like to stay there again!

Great options for food. Luggage handled to and from the ferry! Bike rental on site. This was a fabulous stay! I highly recommend this hotel!

A lovely hotel with helpful staff and nice amenities. We enjoyed the hot tub and indoor pool upon arrival. We were early for our reservation but the staff was accommodating and let us use the facilities until our room was ready. We were checked in 3 hours early which was wonderful after a long morning of traveling. The staff continued to be of assistance throughout our stay. Every request was met with a smile and immediate action. The convenient location and beautiful views are well worth it. Sitting on the front porch was a highlight every morning and evening. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and look forward to making our stay at The Island House a summer tradition!

My parents and I stayed 4 nights for our annual trip to the Island. It was our first time staying at the Island House and it was wonderful! The atmosphere was so relaxing and inviting. The unique amenities such as the chimineas out on the front lawn were perfect for sitting around to enjoy a fire and take in the night air. The pool and outdoor hot tube were also very relaxing.

Very nice just a little bit out of the mix of thing. Great pool and hot tub. Like the out door fires at night. The porch was also very nice to sit and watch the people and water

We needed a quick weekend trip to visit the island and we stayed at the Island House Hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and professional they kept our devices while we explored the island before our check-in time. The ferry took our bags straight to the hotel so we didn't have to take them with us and after we checked in they brought them up to our room. The hotel was very clean and the body wash smelled so good that we are purchasing it for our home. The rooms are small but I can see why. Breakfast was not free but the service was great, Next time we will just have breakfast off the property. We loved it and would stay here again, it's in a perfect location. Not in the middle of Main Street chaos but close enough that you can sit and watch.

What a beautiful stay at the Island House! The property was impeccable. From the lobby to the room to the pool and hot tub, everything smelled so fresh and clean which is really important to me! The location is perfect - close to downtown and hiking trails. The view from the front porch is glorious. I would not hesitate to stay here again! Well done, Island House! 😊

Old and dated property. Other than the front porch I don't even think its charming. Rooms are small, not much room to put furniture. Have to stand in a corner next to toilet to close the bathroom door. Hairs and sand on floor. Peeling paint. Cheap bath fixtures. Staff can not even be favorably compared to emotionless robots. I understand that the hotel can only operate a couple months a year, but I expected more.

Nice staff but overpriced and subpar rooms. Bedding torn and stained. A real disappointment after high expectations.

Room was small with a very loud air conditioner…like sleeping next to a 747 ready for takeoff.

Room was small, cramped, no place for luggage in the room, bathroom was tiny, no sink in the bathroom, instead the sink was in the bedroom. Staff was great.

The hotel is historic and lovely with a great location. The porch and firepits were great. The lobby is warm and welcoming. The room was small but clean but it was VERY loud. The first night, kids playing in the hallways, knocking on doors til after 2am when i called and asked to please help us and then at 7am, we were awakened by the cleaning staff slamming into our door making their way to other rooms yesterday, today shampooing carpets. If you would like to sleep in or get some rest on your getaway, this is not the place to stay. The front desk was apologetic but I feel like 7am is too early to be waking guests. (obviously they did not cause the kids to run around, they did help when I called) It is a pricey stay for so little quiet.

Air conditioner very loud in room 401

Beautiful historic inn with perfect location. However…tall people do not need to be assigned the attic rooms! The slanted roof was a hazard. And the tissue paper is more like sand paper. Only ONE mirror in the entire place…. And window would not open we had window air conditioner but I don’t think it was doing a good job. Fresh air would have been nice. The staff was nice and the luggage transfer from the ferry nice. For the room I feel over charged… but who knows. The porch is the best part!! Need more rocking chairs and bar service would even be fun one or two nights etc…

Clean. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Try not to stay on 4th floor. Low angled ceilings make it hard to get around without bumping your head.

Horrible room. Literally had to duck to get to the bathroom.

Hit my head very hard on 4th fl ceiling. Cant sit up in bed because slope of ceiling is so low. Very claustrophobic. Didnt warn us that elevator only goes to 3rd fl and then walk up very narrow stairs to 4th fl. We spent over 350.00 for a extremely small room. Very uncomfortable. The veranda in front was pleasant and had a good view. It was quite clean.

I really liked that it was one of the hotels that took the luggage from the ferry without us having to make special arrangements. I didn't give it 5 stars because of a couple of things. They closed one of the restaurants for the season so that limited dining options. And 2, the bathroom. I've stayed in historic old hotels before, and even the most basic room had a beautiful, functional bathroom. This room had a tiny and very cheap bathroom. The tub/shower was one of the one piece, molded plastic things. Very tacky. There was no slip protection in the tub and I almost slipped and fell in the tub a number of times. The room was so small that the door(opening inwards) almost touched the front of the toilet. We had to straddle the toilet to open the door. The toilet paper was so cheap we were raw by the end of our stay. The sink area (which was in the bedroom area( was tiny and very close to the bed, making it intrusive to use when someone was sleeping the bed. And finally there were only wood blinds on the window. No curtains or shade. Very bad if you were up late because we were awakened at the crack of dawn. The staff at this hotel was absolutely amazing. Everyone we interacted with from the front desk to the restaurant was friendly, helpful, and gave excellent service. For the price they really need to work on those bathrooms.

Beautiful hotel with great outdoor hot tub. Very convenient. Clean room and very quiet. My only complaint is our room was very small for 2 double beds and it had a slanted wall where one of the beds was. This should have been a room with one bed only.

The location was ideal. We were close enough to downtown but far enough away from the crowds and noise. Hotel staff were very gracious and very helpful. We loved the Ice House Restaurant.

Great location, well preserved historical hotel The only negative feedback would be regarding the front desk staff who were very unfriendly, standoffish and almost unwelcoming I think there is a even tinge of racism as well Otherwise, housekeeping staff and the wait staff at 1852 grill were outstanding

The bike shop went our if it’s way to help me and my son with our bikes from home. They were so helpful and the front desk was very attentive. We will stay again soon!

Perfect location with a great view and large room for our family of 4. Will stay there again for any future visits.

The property location was ideal, being not to close to downtown shopping, yet easily within a few minutes walk. The staff was outstanding in their friendliness and helpfulness.The peace and quiet of early mornings and evenings was perfect.

Perfect location, stay here on Mackinac Island!! This hotel was a 5 minute walk into the downtown area and about 10/15 minutes to Mission Point area. Loved that it was not in the bustling downtown area but very close. My mom and I enjoyed the chairs on the lawn for morning coffee while watching the world go by. We spent time reading on the front porch rocking chairs too. We enjoyed the pool and hot tub one afternoon too. I will stay here again when I come. Two complaints about the stand double room - 1) the bathroom light is outside the bathroom about a foot away from the door over the dresser, so we kept knocking things off the dresser at the night we went to the bathroom and tried to turn on the light. No we never learned to move the stuff off the dresser before we went to bed. 2) the AC unit was blowing black chunks out that landed on both beds. We hoped it was not unhealthy to breathe in for a weekend and forgot to mention it when we checked out.

Excellent location easy walk to everything. Hotel is beautiful and updated with lots of history excellent restaurant 1852 for breakfast, lunch or dinner and happy hour at the bar with with food specials. Icehouse next-door had great barbecue specials in nice backyard with lounge by the pool All servers and bartenders were excellent.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Island House! Very clean and comfy! The 1852 Grill Room restaurant was fantastic and The Ice House BBQ was top notch as well. I would definitely return and recommend!

The dining area felt overly elegant, designed more for an upscale crowd than my taste.

They had excellent dinning choices on-site. The BBQ behind the hotel and the sit-down elegant dining in the hotel. Views galore from the porch area and lawn seating. They also sold box lunches to take on the go that were gourmet and better than anything you could find out (included an apple, chips, fresh warm cookies and we got turkey/bacon/Swiss and Cheddar/PrimeRib sandwiches plus a drink) Try finding that downtown for just $20.00 each. And, two blocks down from the hotel, a grocery store and wonderful bakery beside it. Across the street (yellow building) another excellent restaurant. Also, show your key and get free admission to the Manoogian Museum. And, bikes to rent on site.

Great staff, friendly and efficient. Dinner and dinner service in the hotel restaurant were outstanding.

The property was in relatively good shape. Rooms are small, and view from room was not interesting. However, we did not go there to spend time in the hotel room. The hotel is in a great location. Convenient to walking from ferry and the shops downtown. We ate breakfast at 1892 and dinner one night at Ice House BBQ on site. Both were great. The front porch and lawn offer great view of the marina and harbor.

Loud poorly run restaurant poor choices and not open all the time. Over priced

Location is great,. Did not like basic room but upgraded to great corner room with views. We were not told at check in that breakfast only served until 10 AM and we missed by 2 minutes, but staff would not serve us. Everything else fantastic.

I enjoyed the lovely setting overlooking the harbor, the easy access to downtown, the general quiet, the comfortable room, the pool and hot tub, and the friendly reception staff. My one gripe concerns the hotel's miscommunication about their Ice House BBQ restaurant. I read in several places that the Ice House restaurant would be closed after Labor Day, and was therefore surprised and disappointed to discover late on my last evening of lodging -- on the Thursday after Labor Day -- that that restaurant was in fact still open. Although I was too late to dine there, I was able to walk through their lovely outdoor setting at the back of the property. I look forward to dining there on my next visit to Mackinac Island.
