Comfortable stay and good facilities

We stayed here for 10 nights and on the whole we enjoyed our stay. The location is fabulous, right on the coast, the gardens and grounds were lovely and well maintained. The rooms were big, and nice balcony and outlook. The cleanliness of the hotel was superb, I’ve never seen such a clean pool area, loved being in the pool! Cleaning of room was great and friendly staff. 2 negatives that have to be stated to give a true reflection of the hotel… the food is definitely sub par, we had the buffet 2 nights and 3 nights in the Al a carte dining. Only one of which was decent. We ate out the last 5 nights. The breakfast is ok, but nothing special. It has to be stated otherwise people may be disappointed with this being branded as a 5 star, the food is probably 3 star at best. The other minor issue was that the beds were relatively soft, however this is more personal preference than anything else. Overall don’t expect a 5 star but we were prepared for it being more 4 star than 5,l star, we did enjoy our stay once we had decided we would have our evening meals out with the hotel.

Two times at the same place in July, 2 years in a row. A fantastic experience each time, and that’s a performance. Very stable and experienced crew, nice people who care. Nice rooms, and you should definitely give a try to the front facing suites if you can. The views and the calm are amazing. The outside amenities are to us perfect : very calm and relaxing, great garden with tons of flowers, and with amazing views of the ocean and Cabo Girao. Cabo Girao is a spectacle each morning, evening and even throughout the day. And you can eat of swim with this in front of you. Eating options are OK, good buffet and several restaurants in the place. And the general location if quite perfect, with access to a great neighborhood, calm and secure. One of our best hotel experiences in years.

The buffet selections were good for breakfast and dinner. Enjoyed the pool area and nice walk along the promenade. However as most guests mentioned the hotel needs updating.

Outside areas are lovely - the building could do with some work.

Cet hôtel a une très belle vue sur l'océan. Il y a un restaurant buffet pour le soir ou la possibilité de réserver un des 3 restaurants thématiques (inclus dans le prix). Les boissons sont en supplément. Le parking souterrain est à 10 euros la nuit. L'hôtel n'est pas trop loin du centre-ville et il y a une promenade piétonne devant.

Das Personal war durchgehend freundlich! Das Essen entsprach nicht einem 5 Sterne Hotel. Die Liegen am Pool waren teilweise kaputt. Die Betten sind durchgelegen. Das Zimmer und das Bad sind angenehm groß. Der Balkon lädt zum verweilen ein.

Title: Disappointing Stay with Poor Service Our experience at Pestana Grand Hotel was disappointing from the very first day. We had a serious issue with noise in our room caused by the hotel’s flags flapping loudly in the wind. When we called reception to report it, we were told they couldn’t remove the flags. Additionally, one day our room was not cleaned. When we called reception to report this, we were told it was “impossible” and assured someone would come by with fresh towels. However, no one showed up, and I had to call reception again to get the issue resolved. For a hotel that markets itself as a high-quality establishment, these service failures were unacceptable. Unfortunately, the lack of responsiveness and poor handling of issues made our stay far less enjoyable than we had hoped.

The food they serve at the restaurantes, except bits of the breakfast, are a joke. Its horrible! Ordered a risotto, but got a soup with hard rice. At breakfast, the chef making omelettes and eggs, only used one pan instead of making more omelettes at once? Saving money for the hotel? It made people stand in line for a long time. In bed plastic covers under the sheets, as you for children. Very uncomfortable. There are other things to use if you want to protect the madrasses. Bed linen old and washed down. Facilities nice, but to small for all guests. Rooms very plain and simple, not a luxury feeling. Bathroom, the walls in the shower, have they ever been cleaned? Got a new room after first night, because my room smelled of mould, proberbly from the wall behind the bed. Nice of the reception to change, thank you! The hotel, because of the facilities, is ranked as a 5-star, but its not in reality. Stayed earlier at Pestana Promenad, which is a 4-star ranked hotel, but in reality it is better than Pestana Grand. And the staff is realy nice and welcoming!

The property was very clean and all decor was like knew.The staff were excellent and very helpful. The room was cleaned every day and the furniture was like knew.There was always plenty to eat and would suit all tastes. We had an excellent holiday with no downsides.

De nos jours il est si facile d'utiliser un traducteur ! Pas d'enregistrement de la carte bancaire, ce qui a entrainé de nombreuses difficultés lors des consommations. Dommage

Goede service, mooie grote kamers, netjes en schoon. Hotel is ook een goede uitvalsbasis voor de rest van het eiland. Het eten in de restaurants is erg goed (wel van tevoren reserveren), het standaard buffet vonden we wat te massaal. Enige aanmerking zou zijn dat het al een wat ouder hotel is, maar onze kamer was daar niets van te merken

Dans l’ensemble des prestations décevantes. La chambre est spacieuse, beaucoup de rangements et un balcon très agréable avec vue mer. Mais obligée de demander que le ménage soit fait de façon «\xa0normale\xa0» et se rendre compte que c’est fait de façon superficielle. Les installations sont un peu démodées mais bien entretenues. La situation au bord de la mer avec accès à la promenade du Lido est impeccable. Mais le vrai problème concerne la demi-pension. Le petit déjeuner est quelconque, des produits industriels sans goût. Le dîner sous forme de buffet est comparable à une cantine triste, les propositions sont standardisées pour une clientèle internationale. Peu de cuisine locale. Et l’impression de plats sans âmes et dépourvus d’assaisonnement. Nous avons après 3 jours renoncé à la demi pension déjà payée pour prendre PDJ et repas à l’extérieur. Notre absence durant plus de la moitié du séjour est passée inaperçue. Au moment du checkout aucune question, pas de feed-back. L’impression d’avoir été invisibles.

L’emplacement est idéal et l’endroit très calme. Le personnel est professionnel et accueillant. Dans l’ensemble, l’hôtel est agréable, mais nous ne pensons pas qu’il mérite pleinement ses 5 étoiles. Lors des douches, la température de l’eau variait brusquement entre très chaud et très froid. Par ailleurs, les serviettes n’étaient pas toujours changées, et la nourriture, correcte, manquait parfois de saveur. Malgré cela, nous avons adoré notre séjour à Madère ; simplement, nous estimons que l’hôtel ne correspond pas tout à fait au standing attendu d’un établissement 5 étoiles

We particularly enjoyed the outdoor pool area and the hotel generally was lovely. The buffet restaurant was poorly organised for easy flow of guests. It was good to have alternative options. Some staff were excellent; others were possibly still being trained. If we asked for coffee, we needed to remember to ask for cups too! Our sea view room was beautiful and spacious. Please get rid of the plastic mattress protectors though - so uncomfortable.

Das Hotel an sich liegt ruhig, jedoch ist die Schallisolierung in dem Hotel sehr schlecht. Ich konnte jeden Schritt der Gäste über meinem Zimmer hören, wie auch auf dem Flur vor dem Zimmer. Die Buffets, sowohl Frühstück alsauch Dinner waren in ihrer Qualität überschaubar. Bspw. gibt es Saft aus Instandpulver, das Rührei war ebenfalls aus Pulver hergestellt.Es gab keine allzu große Abwechslung. Das Fleisch war so zäh, dass es fast ungenießbar war. Beim Dinner dauerte es sehr lange, bis die Getränkebestellung aufgenommen wurde, ich war mehrfach mit der Vorspeise schon fast fertig. Der Mitarbeiter dem ich dies freundlich mitteilte, wurde unverschämt. Einem Hotel mit diesem Anspruch (5 Sterne) kann eine solche schlechte Leistung nicht erbringen und verdient auch keine 5 Sterne.

Situation magnifique et chambre impeccable (vaste balcon, chambre de grande surface, salle de bains parfaite) literie de qualité Personnel très gentil et disponible. Seul bémol: la qualité des repas, indigne d'un 5 étoiles (buffets copieux mais aliments très basiques)

The food they serve at the restaurantes, except bits of the breakfast, are a joke. Its horrible! Ordered a risotto, but got a soup with hard rice. At breakfast, the chef making omelettes and eggs, only used one pan instead of making more omelettes at once? Saving money for the hotel? It made people stand in line for a long time. In bed plastic covers under the sheets, as you for children. Very uncomfortable. There are other things to use if you want to protect the madrasses. Bed linen old and washed down. Facilities nice, but to small for all guests. Rooms very plain and simple, not a luxury feeling. Bathroom, the walls in the shower, have they ever been cleaned? Lovely hotel with great amenities. Excellent large room which was very comfortable. Beautiful gardens and quiet surroundings but about 1 hour walk to centre of Funchal. There is no hotel shuttle into Funchal - would be good if provided as buses are quite busy. Choice of restaurants was good and half board a good option although there are plenty of restaurants on the walk in to Funchal. There is no shuttle service from or to the airport - either taxi (€45 approx) or bus. Tea/coffee supplied on arrival but need to request after if more required as not automatically replenished. Overall would highly recommend if you are happy to walk or bus to Funchal when needed.

They will take good care of you!! Any problem you have they are there to fix. Very caring staff and great option. I would stay there again for sure!!

Stayed here during Christmas. The hotel is a little away from the city but probably has one of the best views. Lovely walking trail by the sea just as you walk out with some places to eat and tons of bars. We decided to go to Madeira during Christmas for its Christmas market since a lot of the other places are known to be closed on Christmas Day. The hotel staff is AMAZING and very helpful. They helped us arrange our excursions and we could not be happier. We were a large group too and they accommodated a lot of our requirements. The hotel is a little old and could do with a little upgrade. In all we had a great stay but given when we were there wished we had chosen something closer to the city of Funchal. Overall good hotel if views are what you are looking for.

Great location. We walked the Lido everyday to Praia Formosa and we walked one day to Funchal (60 minutes). We also used the Yellow Hop On Hop Off bus which had 2 stops really close to the hotel. The staff could not be more helpful. Ask for a west facing room. We had a lovely ocean view, but could not see sunset from our balcony. No problem, easily seen from the pool area.

We had a good stay, the reception staff are very welcoming and friendly. Room was clean and there was plenty of spare towels, pillows etc. We went on half board basis. Although there was plenty of food, it lacked taste. Buffet menu needs to improve, especially the hot food for vegetarians. Very insipid. Also we felt cheated because we asked for tap water at dinner and got charged for it! The head waiter takes the order for drinks and we felt it was his duty to inform customers that they charge even for tap water! It is ironical that they give free prosecco and at breakfast, but charge for water at dinner!! Customers can make an informed decision about ordering water if the hotel can make them aware of their charges. Overall, the staff are hard working and try very hard to do their best. Not a bad place to stay but be prepared to pay for your water at dinner!

Madeira's a great spot to vacation and we thoroughly recommend the Pestana Grand Ocean Resort. It's in a quiet location - about 25 mins drive from the airport, so no flight noise and far enough away from the cruise ship dock to be impacted by their daily arrival - but still convenient for Funchal via bus or walking along the promenade. The staff were great and very friendly/helpful, the room we booked had a fine ocean view and was spotless. We'd certainly stay there again.

Breakfast good. Evening dinner ok if you eat in one of the themed restaurants otherwise eat out.

Les serveurs qui nous "courent après" pour nous facturer une bouteille d'eau à 4,99 euros n'est pas digne d'un hôtel 5 étoiles : c'est de la mendicité ! Le Buffet très moyen aussi. Nous pensons que c'est du tout compris : pas du tout !

Although there was plenty of food, it lacked taste. Buffet menu needs to improve, especially the hot food for vegetarians. Very insipid. Also we felt cheated because we asked for tap water at dinner and got charged for it! The head waiter takes the order for drinks and we felt it was his duty to inform customers that they charge even for tap water! It is ironical that they give free prosecco and at breakfast, but charge for water at dinner!! Customers can make an informed decision about ordering water if the hotel can make them aware of their charges. Overall, the staff are hard working and try very hard to do their best. Not a bad place to stay but be prepared to pay for your water at dinner!
