Beautiful hotel, very clean, great service, and with a beautiful view on the volcano. My only complaint is that you have to pay to use the gym. It should be free for people who stay at the hotel.

As a solo traveler, a functional room and good sleep are essential, but this stay completely failed to deliver. The room had a non-functional AC that randomly stopped working, leaving the air heavy and very warm. Changing settings didn't help; strangely, I had to turn on the room lights just to get it to start, only for it to shut off again 15–30 minutes later. I woke up multiple times during the night with a headache from the terrible air quality. Beautiful views and nice amenities don't matter if you can't get a proper night's sleep. ​To make matters worse, the hotel restaurant Holt needs to fix their pizza it had far too much saus, leaving the base dough raw despite being baked in a proper pizza oven. ​I was so tired and annoyed that I checked out early in the morning. The clerk simply processed my payment and didn't even bother to ask how my stay was. Easily the worst experience of my 30-days journey across Japan. Expected a lot more from a 4 stars hotel. Had I stayed another night I would demand a new room

No wonder my friend said we had to stay at the Shiroyama on learning we are going to Kagoshima. The hotel is like the Tokyo Imperial Hotel and more transported to this location on top of a hill, facing the Sakurajima volcano, which one can stare at while bathing in the open air mineral waters at the onsen/spa. There are many different restaurants inside this enormous place so we dined in for the 2 nights. There is a shuttle service to the downtown area to while the daytime hours, which also goes to the train station.

The hotel looks down from a hilltop over the castle park and city and bay to the volcano. It is clearly a beloved landmark and reminded me of marquee properties in US resorts 50 years ago. Completely in a good way.

Staff was extremely helpful. However, no English was spoken at all. Restaurants were excellent. Location was very special with a view of Mount Sakurajima.
