This is a very nice property for people (like us) who can easily handle a lot of stair climbing. The plantings added a lot & were well-maintained. The main second floor patio would benefit from tall chairs & tables to match, so guests could sit, drink a glass of wine & see the ocean. We wound up relocating to the smaller rear 3rd floor patio, which worked after my girlfriend got a blanket out of our room & put it on top of her chair. We had a problem getting our luggage out of the storage room after lunch - no one was in the office, but a friendly lady promptly responded when we called the emergency number.

Weather was good on Friday, Saturday it rain Sunday was beautiful. we stayed in the suite on the fourth floor NO Elevators lots of steps to get to our room. This hotel is not Handicap friendly

I loved the price, cleanliness, comfort, and size of the room. It’s quiet and convenient to the grocery store and main shopping area. Warning, there is a hill climb to get there, and no elevator on the property. There are 4 levels so don’t bring too big of a bag.

You pay for the view. The hotel has ZERO amenities. The Wi-Fi is horrible. If you want or need anything you have to go to the front desk. No extra towels. Unless you go get them. The hotel has no elevator so you are climbing a ton is stairs if you get a room in a higher floor. And to top it off the furniture needs repair and the mattress needs to be replaced.

We purchased the Penthouse Suite for two nights and no where did the write-up say there was NO elevator. We discovered that on arrival. Moreover, there was no bell staff to assist with the luggage. On the second morning I asked for clean towels which were never forthcoming. I do not recommend this property unless you stay on the ground floor and for only one night.

Great place to stay for the value. Rooms were very clean and spacious and was a great deal. Centrally located and easy access to just about anything you could want to do. Service was also very good, we dropped our bags off at the check in when we arrived and our room was available 2 hours early for no additional charge. Was also nice to be a block off the main strip so it was quiet and peaceful at night without trying to sleep through music blasting at midnight. Would highly recommend

However, I didn't enjoy overly frugal approach of the owners to hide and lock coffee pods post breakfast hours of 7am-11am. We also an aftertaste of sloppiness: from the mixed up cold and hot water faucet labels, to a widely incorrect time on the office wall clock.

Room smelled damp; my mother could hardly sleep. We had to keep the window open even though it was freezing outside. Office is open 8-2pm and check in is at 3pm! We had to wait until 4:20 for someone to show up, and had to call twice. The card reader wasn't working so they had to do the transaction by phone with another hotel card reader.

Our room had ants and several spiders in the bathroom, as well as a rattling AC unit that kept us up all night. Aside from that, they put us in the room right next to the front office which faced the main road… the road noise was so loud all night. The car lights shone through the window all night long as well, which was difficult to look past considering that the one main wall in the room had 2 huge windows with very thin curtains. We asked to change rooms after our first night and they couldn’t accommodate a room switch even though they informed us that they did have another double queen room on the premises is that was intended for another guest later that evening. Overall super disappointed in this hotel.

The walls were very thin and conversations next door were audible as well as walking upstairs. It was a very dark room with the windows facing the outdoor hallway and the other rooms. The beds were creaky and loud when you moved. The room smelled musty.

The hotel was really cute, decorated well, and had some very pleasing common areas, such as a patio on each floor with outdoor seating (PERFECT for Catalina ;-) BUT, the staff was pretty sporadic about answering the phone, and were often not to be found on the property. That caused from concern about checking in and checking to, but it did all work out. Our party would suggest cell phones for the staff so they are reachable at all times.

Both receptionists were super nice. They phoned us right when we got off the boat and allowed very early check in without additional fees as our rooms were ready when we arrived at about 11:00 am. When we checked out the next day, they stowed our luggage until 3:30 for us because our boat departed at 4:30. The only disappointment was that the TV was at a bad angle for watching in bed and we couldn’t get coffee at the office until after 8:00am. We were on the 3rd floor and discovered a patio toward the back that was non-smoking as opposed to the front patio which allowed smoking. Both patios could have been cleaned better but we didn’t mind too much as we were just happy to enjoy the beautiful weather and view. The plants in the corridors were beautiful!

Great location, clean room, decent size, safe, quiet, private. Service was good but the storage hold had limited hours and when I came back for my bag at 1:20pm, no one was around to retrieve it. Called the number on the door, no answer. Sign said someone would return at 1:30 but it wasn’t until almost 1:45. A little tight for my 2:15pm ferry but I ended up boarding as one of the last passengers, couldn’t sit with my group though.

Unfortunately, my review must be poor as the management was unwilling to work with me during a family crisis that prevented me from going on my trip. When I tried calling to resolve the matter myself, no one answered the phone. And when Expedia intervened for me, they were not willing to refund me, give me credit, or work with me in any other way. It is such a shame that a company could have such a lack of human compassion during a family's most desperate moment. I will not be booking with this hotel again and will be informing friends and family that this is how I was treated.

I loved the price, cleanliness, comfort, and size of the room. It’s quiet and convenient to the grocery store and main shopping area. Warning, there is a hill climb to get there, and no elevator on the property. There are 4 levels so don’t bring too big of a bag.

Great location, walking distance to everything. The street wasn’t a main corridor so it wasn’t too loud. Staff was very accommodating and friendly.

The on-site manager was helpful and friendly. We had a large room with an ocean view. The room included a fridge which was very handy. We liked the garden style setting. It was located very close to all of the restaurants, grocery store and other sites. We would definitely stay here again.

The hotel is near to the Catalina Island Museum farther above the hill. The hotel is very clean, quiet and safe. The Staff is very courteous and helpful. Since the hotel is on a hill, I would recommend taking a taxi or shuttle if you have walking issues. But if you're looking for a nice, quiet hotel that is not near the main street in Avalon this is a good choice. Oh yes, the Von's Market is one block away!

Room was on third floor NO ELEVATOR!!! Room smelled of strong cleaning chemicals and NO COFFEE MACHINE IN ROOM !! First morning coffee served in lobby at 7am next morning time was changed to 8 we waited til 8:30 and still not open😮.

The property sits three blocks back from the main strip, is unimproved, and has tiny inconvenient rooms. We love Catalina, but for $500 per night we expect more than K-cup coffee and a granola bar. Would likely not stay here again, and certainly not at this price. That said, the front desk staff is wonderful.

the stay was enjoyable, the staff was super friendly, the coffee and muffins were nice and the view of the bay was super. You’re in the middle of the shops and restaurants, two blocks from the beach, one block from Vonns, and a miniature golf course. The bed was a little hard and the TV had sound problems. But other than that it was great. It also had little patio areas to read or bring something to eat. There’s a micro wave in the office, but not in the rooms. There is a small grind he in the room.

A little bit run down, but we didn't come to the island to stay in our room. Poor wifi - TV didn't work. Staff was great! FYI - Continental breakfast is instant oatmeal packets and granola bars.

The accommodations were great beautiful place if I had any complaint, it would be the time that they served coffee. I’m a morning person 8 o’clock is a ridiculous time to have coffee. They need to open and have the continental breakfast and coffee at least by 7 o’clock. everybody was walking around, looking for coffee in the morning, we had to actually go and purchase coffee

Our stay was fun and very comfortable. The “hands free” pancake machine was a sweet and tasty way to make it feel a little more fun. All employees were kind and welcoming. Our room was huge! We got the penthouse. Brand new kitchen, great view, and huge massage chair. Massage chair was much needed after a day of hiking and zip lining. I will recommend this hotel to all friends and family.

I like that it's fairly close to shopping and the beach, a little walk with our luggage back to the boat, but not to bad if you leave early and take your time. I didn't like the mold that was around the bath tub area, The room was real small. I didn't like there wasn't a coffee pot and no where to get coffee expect at the restaurant that doesn't open till 7am. Original Jack's Country Kitchen has great coffee and a very good breakfast menu... Highly recommended...

Staff are helpful and courteous. Coffee machine (keurig) offers different flavors for your own coffee ☺️. Breakfast offered to us was oatmeal and nature valley granola bars . No bread or pastry . Vons grocery is nearby so you can do your mini grocery shopping . Vons is superb! you can buy fried chicken and sub sandwiches. Good for people who want to save money ! We went on a weekday and hotel was quiet. The only complaint is the TV was not working. Hotel gave us a discount because we didn’t have a tv in our room. Before checking in , ask for a room with working TV . Overall, we liked the hotel.

The stay was nice and had a good view of the ocean. Be aware there is limited breakfast but the good thing is that Catalina is an island with plethora of food so it is not necessary. There were some couple cracks and my dispenser did not have soap when I came in.

The hotel was great. The staff was nice and friendly and very out well, though. The hotel was going through some Wi-Fi renovations. Wife, I was limited if that at best, but everything else was great again. The staff was helpful. Front desk lady was excellent and very helpful. Kind, I would definitely come back. Thank you so much for your help and support and keeping me comfortable

The room was ok… They are under new management so there was no cable TV in the room. I gas ordered a room with a king sized bed and balcony but received a room with a queen sized bed. We weren’t in the room a lot but it would have been nice to have known these things prior to checking in.

Overall, the hotel was great. It was a budget hotel for the area, and exceeded quality in terms to its price. The workers were very helpful, and very accommodating. This hotel seems to have JUST switched management and name. It was the casa mariquita, and now is the casa Avalon. Many of the negative reviews blow this issue WAY Out of proportion. The previous hotel had a 8.2/10 on hotels.com. Since they are switching, the cable doesn’t work at all (who uses that anyways nowadays), and the WiFi was very spotty, but they’re working on it apparently. The location is a great as it’s just a street up from the main area of town. The water pressure in the shower was AWESOME and got hot quick, same with the sink. The AC blows nice and cold and the bed itself is relatively firm, which I like, and the pillows were okay, standard hotel pillows. Overall, my girlfriends and I two night stay was great. For a budget hotel this was excellent, and we had 0 problems. Would definitely stay here again.

It was the most awful experience I have ever had checking into a hotel. Showed up to learn hotel overbooked and had no plan for accommodating my famiky. Several other families were in the same situation. Had to wait hours and keep reminding manager about him needed to take care of the issue. We were sent to another hotel and they had no record of us needing to be transferred to their hotel. It was an utter disaster. They were not equipped.
