Zarco B&B Bed & Breakfast

We stayed here on our last night in Madeira because we had an early morning flight the next day and the hotel is super close to the airport bus stop. You can't beat the location of this hotel. It is in the heart of downtown Funchal so you are within walking distance of lots of restaurants and shops, plus the beautiful waterfront. The hotel itself was clean during our stay, however the walls are thin and you can hear everything in the hallways. The rooms are small and the beds are firm, but they have everything you need for a one night stay (bonus points for great air conditioning units!). The staff went above and beyond by providing me with breakfast at 2am since I had a 5am flight to catch. I wouldn't stay here for more than a night or two as the rooms are small and not the most comfortable, but I was really pleased with the service during our stay.

Ideal gelegen in der Altstadt von Funchal. Sehr sauber, sehr freundliches Personal. Ich habe das Zimmer einmal gewechselt, da man mein erstes nicht lüften konnte und die Sicht auf einen Innenhof ging. Die besten Zimmer schauen auf den so genannten Gelben Platz.

Simple Breakfast, but more than adequate (buffet). Location is the main selling point, as puts you right at the front adjacent to the promenade. Walking distance to the Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers' Market) and old town, Cable Cars and CR7 museum. There is a market right outside for essentials. The building has no lift and some rooms are without windows bu sdo all have Air conditioning. This is the second time I've stayed here and would stay again.

Hotel très bien situé, mail peu isolement sonore faible avec la rue. Parking payant à 5 minutes.

I enjoyed my stay at Zarco very much. The room was very comfortable and renovated with beautiful linens and a great bathroom. The staff was exceptionally helpful and friendly. The breakfast buffet is outstanding with pastries, fruit, eggs, deli meats and cheeses and excellent juice and coffee. It’s also very well located walking distance to the historic area, the marina and beach promenade and great cafes and shopping. My only complaint is the street noise since my room overlooked the busy square below with a cafe open until 2:00am and lots of noisy people. I would happily stay there again but ask for an interior room. Be aware that you have to walk up 16 stairs to enter the reception area. I was lucky that some charming guests helped carry my large rolling suitcase up the stairs! Overall an excellent value and charming place to stay in Madeira.

Hard access

We love the Surrounding areas. Property not appropriate for free mobility, many stairs and no elevator. Rooms of ok size, bathrooms extremely small, not appropriate at all for heavy weight people. Cleaned facility.

Die Lage ist für Fußgänger super. Man kann allerdings nicht mit einem Auto zum Ein- oder Ausladen halten. Wir hatten ein sehr sehr kleines Zimmer (ca. 10 qm). Bad war 1x2 Meter klein. Nichts für massige Personen. Aber die Klimaanlage funktionierte sehr gut! Also gut für Gäste, die den ganzen Tag und auch noch abends unterwegs sind und dann nur noch schlafen wollen. Am zweiten Abend gab es mehrfach Stromausfälle, so dass dann das WLan nicht funktionierte.

Ons verblijf bij Zarco Bed & Breakfast in Funchal viel erg tegen. Het ontbijt was prima en de ligging centraal, maar daarmee houden de pluspunten op. De kamer was vies: vlekken op de muren en het dekbed, stoffige nachtlampjes en een sterke, onaangename geur in de badkamer, die we met deodorant moesten maskeren. Dit hebben we aangegeven bij de receptie, waarop gereageerd werd dat ze dit weten en met een duidelijke indruk dat er niks mee gedaan werd. Tot onze schrik kwam er zelfs een kakkerlak uit de douche. Deze werd door iemand van de receptie verwijderd en zonder dat we iets konden zeggen was hij de kamer alweer uit. De bedden waren te kort (we sliepen met onze enkels buiten het bed terwijl geadverteerd werd dat het grote bedden waren), de kussens veel te plat, en het slaap comfort daardoor slecht. Ondanks die e belofte van geluidsdichte kamers, werden we elke ochtend wakker door kletsende personeel, passerende gasten en het drukke uitcheckmoment. Je kon alles door de deur heen horen. Het personeel was onvriendelijk en weinig behulpzaam. Een simpele vraag over activiteiten werd afgedaan met “geen idee” en zelfs een begroeting bij de receptie kon er zelden vanaf. Voor deze prijs hadden we veel beter kunnen zitten. Wij zouden dit verblijf dan ook niet aanbevelen.

In der ersten Nacht regnete es so sehr, dass es in unser Badezimmer regnete und wir am nächsten Tag das Zimmer wechseln mussten. zu unserem Pech haben wir wieder eines der Zimmer bekommen, welches in den Innenhof zeigte. es war zu egal welcher Uhrzeit unnormal laut weil der große Raum so gehallt hat. außerdem nahm das Personal leider überhaupt keine Rücksicht auf extreme Lautstärken durch Musik oder sehr lautes sprechen/schreien spät abends oder sogar schon morgens zwischen 3am-4am um Geschirr zu verräumen... ich verstehe total, dass das erledigt werden muss oder auch, dass das Personal nicht auf Zehenspitzen durch das Haus laufen möchte aber dann muss man den Frühstückssaal/Küche/Flur zu den oben liegenden Zimmern abschirmen. also sollte man einen ruhigen Schlaf haben wollen, geschweige denn überhaupt schlafen wollen, sollte man explizit ein Zimmer buchen, welches nicht die einzige Lüftungsmöglichkeit Richtung Speisesaal hat. Das Frühstück hatte meiner Meinung nach nicht genug Auswahl und sah nicht lecker oder ansprechend aus.. das Rezeptionspersonal war aber sehr freundlich. In beiden unserer Zimmer hat das Bad geschimmelt und wirklich mies gerochen (lüften war so gut wie gar nicht möglich, da man den Geruch aus dem Speisesaal (lüften war so gut statt frische Luft bekam. Unfortunately both me and my wife affected with bedbugs in this hotel

The propriety was very good, with clean rooms and places. But the smell of the sewer was really bad. Talked with the hotel staff and the y told me that is a problem depending of the heights of the ocean and they couldn't do nothing about that, It is a city problem. The problem was minimized when I close all the sewer vents in the bath room, and kept a sink full of water and the toilette always closed. Unfortunely is an island problem.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location. Dirty cleans, dirty wall, dirty bathroom, the room is so small that if you bring more that one carry on, you would have to open the door in order to be able to open the second suitcase. Or put the suitcases on your bed.

We booked a room for three people, but the sofa bed was very poor quality and uncomfortable. The bathroom lacked standard hotel amenities such as shampoo, conditioner, or soap.

Location, Location, Location. A nice small Bed and Breakfast in the midst of the city. close to restaurants, bars , shopping and harbor. The room I had was a little small, so it is maybe not for you if you visit Funchal to only stay inside your hotel room. Perfect if you are under 175cm as the beds are a bit compact sized.

Very small bathroom, if your weiht is more than 90 kg you can’t sit on the Toilet, there is an bar directly in front of the Hotel and we had the room above the bar - so it was very much noise in the evening. Great location for bus station, walking in the area and food/stores. The room was okay: mini fridge wasn't working, door couldn't locked,very tiny bathroom and rigid towels. Breakfast was good :)

Bra och mycket prisvärt hotel med underbart bra service. Fräscht o fint och läget på både rummen o lägenheterna är helt förträffligt. Frukosten var fräsch och alldeles tillräcklig. Catia i receptionen gav oss tips på sevärdheter och hjälpte oss med allt vi behövde så som vart vi skulle hyra bil, vilka bussar man tog till olika ställen osv. Joel var också väldigt hjälpsam och alla deras kollegor.

We chose this property for it's location and it was perfect for being in the heart of the old city and close to what we wanted to do / see for our short stay in Funchal. We arrived on a late flight and reached the hotel about 1am (took the Aerobus for 5e it worked great). The man at the hotel reception was wonderful - kind and generous. The room was clean and basic. It's recently renovated / updated. Our only complaint is the area has several Poncha bars and it appears they are open all night. They were still going at 1am after we checked in. It was mostly music coming from the bars that we could hear. Our room faced the square directly across from one of the offending bars. We had earplugs and turned on the air condition and closed the windows so we were able to drown out the noise and sleep. That was certainly the only downside, and if I stayed again, I'd specifically request a room on the back side of the hotel away from the noisy square. The breakfast was included and it was a good selection of items. We had an early morning flight (left at 4am) and again, the man at the hotel reception had a breakfast packed for us to take and had our taxi waiting. Truly friendly service oriented hotel.

I felt very safe at all times and the 24 hour reception really helped with this (you can come and go as you please at any time). The rooms were clean and comfortable (with regular cleans during my 4-night stay). The staff were all so friendly; I needed some assistance with my room at one point and maintenance sorted it straight away. The gentleman on reception sent me off with a parcel of cakes as I was leaving before breakfast for my hike! The breakfast spread was a highlight - lots of choice and replenished well. I often woke to the smell of fresh bread! There are water dispensers for filling bottles and coffee machines too. Will definitely be back :)

Very convenient area. Staff phenomenal!!

Great hospitality. Perfect for our one night stay. We woke up to catch the sunrise at pico da ariero and the gentleman working the desk was there to greet us before we left at 5:30am, with a breakfast for the road. Smaller rooms with a bit of an echo from the courtyard/hallways but would definitely recommend. Not to mention Zarco is in a great spot.

I felt very safe at all times and the 24 hour reception really helped with this (you can come and go as you please at any time). The rooms were clean and comfortable (with regular cleans during my 4-night stay). The staff were all so friendly; I needed some assistance with my room at one point and maintenance sorted it straight away. The gentleman on reception sent me off with a parcel of cakes as I was leaving before breakfast for my hike! The breakfast spread was a highlight - lots of choice and replenished well. I often woke to the smell of fresh bread! There are water dispensers for filling bottles and coffee machines too. Will definitely be back :)

The property could not be in a better location for exploring the island. Central location with buses 2 minutes from property. Rooms small but functional but building can be noisey at times with other guests on the stairway. Breakfast was basic but theres plenty of bars and cafes within a 2 minute walk.

I loved this hotel being central for town, bus station, boat trips and market. Very helpful friendly staff and ideal for solo female, safe door lock. Buffet breakfast included and adequate with fresh fruit and pastries. Front room does overlook small bar table area but not overly noisy and no music. Cathedral close by and main tourist attractions/museum. Bus to airport 9 at end of road which is promenade walking area and sea. Great short stay. Steps to access.

Location wise it cannot be faulted, it is a three star, but has clean towels and sheets. I went alone and for a short trip it was perfect

Das Hotel liegt zentral in einer Top Lage und ist sehr sauber. Das Frühstück ist okay, allerdings nicht abwechslungsreich. Die Fenster der Zimmer sind sehr hellhörig. Als Ehepaar für einen Kurzurlaub mit 4 Nächten ist das Hotel empfehlenswert, da wir täglich Ausflüge unternommen haben. Die zentrale Lage als Ausgangspunkt ist super.

Our stay was great, and it started top. We arrived early in the morning after a tough trip, and we’re invited to join breakfast for free. Really a top attitude from the nice staff, we felt like home from day one. I had read some criticism about breakfast, which is in my opinion unfair. Very good and complete continental breakfast with fresh fruit, home made cake, etc. I’ll stay again for sure.

Hotel was in the centre of town, walkable to everything....shops, restaurants, attractions, transit, promenade. Great breakfast and comfortable beds. Room could of been a bit bigger. If you get a room facing the promenade, it can be noisy with people talking and music into late hours 3am. But overall enjoyed our stay.

Pænt og rent og rummeligt værelse. Dog lidt støjende (det ligger lige i centrum og der var karneval) Morgenmadsudvalget er lidt sparsomt- fx kun kamillete. Støjende lokale til morgenmad. Meget lydt.

Zarco b&b is an affordable place to stay in central Funchal. For the price, we were not expecting frills, and there certainly were none. It is a very basic hotel. The breakfast each day was really good value, with a wide selection of continental breakfast foods, including freshly baked croissants and cakes, and lots of fresh fruit. They even offer to make you a packed breakfast to order if you need to leave early before the breakfast service begins. The room itself was basic but clean and did the job. The staff were super friendly and helpful, especially the man who works evenings. The hotel is situated right in central Funchal on a bustling street, which can be very noisy at night. I would definitely bring ear plugs! Getting around Funchal from there is super easy though, and all the major sights in central Funchal are less than a 10 minute walk away so it is super convenient. There is also a really good car park nearby if you are renting a car (Almirante Reis car park). Overall I would highly recommend this b&b if you are looking for something cheap and basic with a good breakfast included, and if you don’t plan to be in the hotel much.
