The property is well maintained. Its staff is so friendly and helpful as well. We loved The River House with the beautiful terrace and rocking chairs overlooking the river. So peaceful. The amenities and sitting room were a lovely touch.

Nice get away spit in the country. Very clean and bed was comfortable. Fire pits were lite each night to sit out and enjoy. Short walk into town for shopping and eating. A market across the road was very convenient.

I thought The Shire was great!. Very clean. Friendly staff. Great coffee. Quiet. Walking distance to town. This is a motel like set up. No restaurant but plenty around and a grocery store across the street. Rugs in rooms. I don’t like that but they were very clean. Excellent shampoo, high quality body cream that smelled great! Nice touch!

The hotel room had beautiful views of the river. Renovated, clean and pretty. Parking was a challenge when we arrived later at night on a Saturday. I would stay there next time we tho to Woodstock. Easy walk to town too.

Bathroom was old fashioned. Needed updating. I’d seen pretty rooms online but ours was only so-so and rather small. Carpet was stained and bathroom needed a once over. Smashed mosquito on wall. Very quiet. Lovely stream behind bldg.

I had a great stay at this hotel. The location is fantastic—everything was easily accessible, and the view of the river was a nice bonus. The rooms were very clean, and the beds were super comfortable, which made for a relaxing stay. While the TVs could use an upgrade, it wasn’t a major issue. Overall, a positive experience, and I’d stay here again.

We have stayed at the shire many times over the last 15 years. Mostly in the fall but also in other seasons. This year the rate was doubled and the service was reduced by 75%. The room was clean when we came but never cleaned again during our three day stay. the coffee machine in the room did not work and there was no decaf upstairs. The manager (for lack of a better name) could not speak or pretended he could not speak english. We won't be staying at the shire again. So sad because we had many happy memories of are former stays.

We were assigned to a cottage apart from the main building. The cottage was in need of updating. The main concern though was with the lack of cleanliness...spider webs and dust were found throughout the room/bathroom. There is not a "front desk" either, which we found a bit odd.

Decent, clean accommodations. Close to downtown. Nice views. Staff were very helpful and worked with our changing plans. Rooms on the lowest level of the River building had a good deal of moisture build-up (like a basement), so things /felt/ a little damp (nice river access, though). One room had virtually no toilet paper left, but that was quickly rectified. Would stay there again, as--on the whole--it was a good experience.

The staff was very helpful and welcoming. The area was very safe but had limited options to do stuff. The room itself was kind of disappointing - the windows didn’t close properly, there was mold in the PTAC unit clearly visible on the vents, and the shower didn’t drain the water efficiently resulting in standing water while showering. The light in the porch didn’t turn off at night and we had really bright light coming into the room at night. The window had a see through blind so it didn’t help keep the light out. The walls were also really thin and we could clearly hear the people next door having a conversation. The property could definitely take some repairs and upgrades.

Our room was terrible. They said we were on the first floor but had to go down many steps arounds the back. The room was not comfortable. The bathroom door would not close and needed updating. My family's room was much nicer and more comfortable. The price was over $500 nightly. Not worth it

Part of the property looks like a travel lodge hotel. Half the rooms are on the parking lot. Decently maintained. However not what you expect for over $400/night. Slightly out of main part of town but walkable if town parking is an issue. Grocery across the street is a nice benefit. Free onsite parking was never an issue. Staff is pleasant. Definitely request a room at back of the property or in the river house. Otherwise you are overpaying.

Excellent all around. Loved the room, so comfortable and well furnished and, of course, the balcony looking over the river. Easy check-in and they accommodated my request fro a ground floor room. Parking right outside your room which helps a lot when you have a ton of luggage. We don't travel light!

I enjoyed my stay at the Shire. It’s an odd mix of comfort, luxury, bargain and practicality. The room was clean and comfortable, if a bit worn. I sprang for a river front room, which was an excellent idea. The deck outside my door was right off of the lawn at the edge of the water, and it was a delight to have the soothing water sounds outside. In better weather, you can use the fire pits and Adirondack chairs to create a cozy vibe at the water’s edge. The drawback to the waterfront rooms is that you have to navigate a steep, rough staircase beside the building. The hotel’s location just minutes from downtown Woodstock was perfect. I even walked comfortably to Billings Farm, one of the town’s major sights. Be careful about closures out of season — many restaurants and shops were closed while I was there. But there’s a grocery store across the street that has a deli and prepared food. There’s a nice park (a reclaimed landfill) almost next door, with natural playground equipment and a walking trail. I visited friends at a higher-end resort down the street; they had an onsite restaurant, but I think my setting at the Shire was nicer!

We had a premium king room which was lovely. It had a balcony and the room overlooked the river, fields and mountains. We stayed there for 4 nights. The rooms are not serviced during your stay. However, you can request clean towels etc if you need them.

Liked the River. I will not stay here again. We drove from Bar Harbor, ME to the Shire. I found out yesterday that registration is only for two hours on Wednesday. We drove all day and arrived at 5:07 pm. Luckily the reception was still open. I had booked two rooms and only one room had a key in the room and had been registered for late arrival. What would have happened if they wouldn’t have been open. Then we found out no elevator and we had to lug everything upstairs. We had 2 weeks worth of clothes in suitcases so it was tough maneuvering the stairs.

The washcloths were threadbare, no coffee/tea in the room, no iron, no microwave. I would expect better for the cost. Also, at check-in we were given a number of restaurants to try. All of them were closed. The room key had number 44 but the number was 409, which was confusing. Then while we were relaxing, other people came into our room because they were given our key by mistake.

Excellent river view from our room. Nice coffee station right outside our room on the 2nd floor as well as the first floor. Especially like that they cleaned the overnight snow on my car in the morning! Very nice staff!

Very disappointed with The Shire Woodstock. A nice property but clearly having major challenges with management/staffing. The manager assured me she would follow up with me after many crossed wires on our room and the hotel communication and now a few weeks later I have heard nothing. I assume she just said all of that to try to make me happy but had no intention of remedying the situation. We received MULTIPLE emails before we checked in to the hotel about our stay but found it almost impossible to communicate with the hotel. We booked a room with two queen beds and river view (by the way most/all rooms have a view) and were told room was not available on day of check in. Promised we would be given two rooms instead - but when we checked in the staff gaslighted us. We arrived around 6 pm and asked for suggestions on where to eat and told that we likely would find no place to eat (?). Gentle reader, we did find a place to eat on our own.

Always enjoy our stay at The Shire. Jenny was very helpful when. our flights were delayed and didn't arrive until after 2 am. She made sure we had the proper instructions to get to our room! Thank you! Will be returning!

This is a very convenient location. There is a grocery store across the street and the shops of Woodstock are a 5 minute walk. I also appreciate how the staff worked with my recent knee injury. They got me a downstairs room with a walk-in shower so I could avoid further injury. An excellent stay overall!

I loved everything about the Hotel. However, my room was not cleaned during my stay, even after I requested it. This lack of service was very frustrating, especially for a high-end hotel.

I have stayed here several times. Room was great but I missed the coffee and treats and the microwave in the building I was in had to walk far and find the map of the property to find the coffee etc. only staff I saw was saw was the young man when we checked in who was very nice and professional.

This is a lovely property in the town of Woodstock. We enjoyed our time there (and all the space in our room!). I left something in our room and did not realize it until the next day. I called the property to ask if anything had been found. They soon got back to me that they had my item and would mail it to me - which they did. I'm extremely grateful!

Great hotel, room was cute and with a nice view. 5 min walk to downtown. If we needed anything we just texted the front desk and they got us what we needed. Would stay again!

Can't beat the value, the location, and the view it provides. We stayed there to ski at Killington (the best ski experience in the east), 20-30 minutes away. Apres ski options are much better and cheaper here than in the pricey Killington area. Just look at the google maps and reviews ;)

Nice property about a block and a half from down town Woodstock. We stayed in a smaller building next door to the main hotel. The room was very large and quiet with a king bed. I would recommend staying at The Shire. Very convenient location.

The property was well maintained the grounds were beautiful and our room was clean with an amazing view of the river and foliage. The only think they don’t have is coffee in the morning but there’s a Cumberland farms pretty close.

We had a lovely visit at the Shire Woodstock. The room was lovely, comfortable, and in a great location! We enjoyed breakfast at Oakes and Evelyn the restaurant at their sister Inn, The Jackson. It was amazing. We can't wait to return to the Shire and to Woodstock

I strongly recommend this hotel for room furniture, view, cleanliness, quiet, location and registration service. No food service but there are a number of eating places nearby and a supermarket across the street (far back from the street)

Extremely disappointing and i am not sure to blame the motel or hotel.com. i contracted for a room on the hotel.com site that included a balcony..it was the ONLY one listed with two beds on ‘choose your room’. On arrival, we were given a two bed room with a pathetic window. Then..the next morning, at 6:30 am went for coffee…no water in ‘pot’ and water in dispenser was out…so up the stairs to my room to fill the coffee pot…several of us not happy and another woman tried to you the food dispenser to have THAT jam. One of the gardeners also left a hose on spewing down a hill??? Things just did not seem organized around there to be honest.

I thought The Shire was great!. Very clean. Friendly staff. Great coffee. Quiet. Walking distance to town. This is a motel like set up. No restaurant but plenty around and a grocery store across the street. Rugs in rooms. I don’t like that but they were very clean. Excellent shampoo, high quality body cream that smelled great! Nice touch!

This was centrally located , with a market across the street . Making it perfdctvto grab whatever your needs for the night or the morning on the go. They offer free coffee , in the room , as well as by the main office The inn has impecable outdoors, and the room was amazing. The staff was beyond extra nice - we sat outside and enjoyed a coffee by the river - others were doing the same Highly recommended… and you can walk the town without a problem- get BBC a cremee down the street

The Shire is a great little inn, well maintained and close to all the amenities and restaurants at Woodstock. Rooms are tastefully furnished with comfortable bedding and linens. The coffee and tea station near the reception lobby is brilliant. There's a store right across the street and awesome coffee shops within walking distance. The only downside is that the mobile coverage in this area is very weak across most providers. We had to walk to town to get 4g access. The guest wifi does work though. We happened to lock ourselves out of the room late at night and had to call the staff (who were not on premises) for help us get back in - they were super nice about it and really prompt too. Recommend this place to anyone looking for a quaint little inn to explore the area! Love to come back here again!
