We really wanted to love this apartment, which was the last one my husband and I stayed in for our Italian honeymoon. What we expected was a “chicco apartment facing the sea.” What we got was a studio apartment, without a view, a block and a half away from the ocean. The property sits behind a gated courtyard along with other small townhomes in the tiny seaside town of Focene – about 20-minutes from FCO. While the apartment listing says there are 3 beds, this studio, located adjacent to the owner’s upstairs home, has a sofa bed and a separate cot. While the sofa bed was comfortable, it was not what we were expecting and a great disappointment to us. Melina was kind, but since we could her upstairs, we didn’t feel like our place was private and worked hard to be quiet and not disturb anyone. The upgraded bathroom was nice, and we appreciated having a place to cook our last meal in Italy before an early morning flight, but the property was difficult to find and we did not receive full check-in guidance until the morning of our trip to Focene. Without local WIFI and an international data plan, we were unable to communicate with the owner and find the property until a kind neighbor was able to call her for us. Overall, this property is a step-up from a normal hotel stay and we were grateful for it. However, it was not as described and wouldn’t be pleasant for anyone looking for a true vacation rental spot on the beach.
