Hakone Gora Byakudan

It takes a while to reach the Hakone Gora Byakudan via public transportation. Free shuttle is available from Kowakudani station. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The ryokan has rooms with beautiful view and private onsen. The public onsen was also quiet and peaceful. Dinner and breakfast was amazing and my husband was able to enjoy his gluten free meals. Service was excellent. If we ever go back to Japan, we would definitely visit this Ryokan again. This ryokan only has a handful of rooms available, so make sure you book well in advance if interested :)

Everything was expected for the price I had paid. When we arrived it was pouring and the staff readily helped us with our luggages when we parked. The food was good and having a private onsen was a treat. They have public one available if needed and all amenities are included. During the evening and early they had happy hour. In the evening they had snacks during happy hour after dinner time. They also had an area with massage chairs and ice cream/tea for refreshments. When we had a question the staff tried their best to help us. The view from the main floor was amazing on a nice sunny day and overall we had a relaxing experience here. The hotel really tries to make you feel comfortable during your stay throughout the whole hotel.

Amazing private hot spring experience. The staff were super nice and the shuttle service is indispensable. Hakone bus system was unreliable but the hotel staff kindly picked us up and dropped us off at various locations throughout our stay. We really appreciated the kindness shown to us during our stay.

Tsuyu Room (3nites) We enjoyed our stay in this serene modern rokyan with sandal wood scent in the premises. Love the outdoor private onsen. Upon request, they replace beef with other options. Every kaiseki meal was different and delicious in your own private dining room. We were served meals by a lovely lady Ms Nozomi. She made our stay a pleasant and memorable one. Room is reasonably spacious and clean. Hotel provides free pickup and transfer to certain nearby attractions/stations. This is definitely a plus point. Paid SGD$960 per nite but it is value for money.

I’ve always wanted to visit a ryokan when in Japan and knew that for my first trip, it was a must have. Did a lot of research on the different ryokans in the Hakone area but settled on Byakudan as it included a kaiseki dinner breakfast with our stay as well as had a private onsen for every room since my partner has tattoos. I was super concerned about how to access the property, but coming from the Tokyo Ginza region, it wasn’t actually that bad. It was extremely foggy the day we arrived but I could not find fault with how beautiful the ryokan is (also got a beautiful, sunny view the next morning). Absolutely stunning in person and everything smells so pleasantly of their namesake, sandalwood. The staff is so attentive in everything from giving a full room tour to letting you choose what times you’d like to dine at. Dressing up in the provided yukata was so fun and they had so many complimentary snacks, drinks, and amenities for us. We had a western style Tsuyu room on the first floor so the private onsen area was pretty, serene, and blocked from others with a tall fence. The meals were so good. It was some of the prettiest and tastiest food I’ve ever eaten, both dinner and breakfast. Even the snacks were amazing (you can bring some home)! They take into account allergies and food preferences. Overall, I can’t believe the experience I received here. It was healing. Definitely the highlight of my trip. This memory will be so special and I already can’t wait to be back.

The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed the welcome drinks and snack and the kaiseki dinner. Our room had a private onsen and it was very clean and had all of the amenities you could ever need. Would definitely recommend staying for at least two nights, we wished we could have stayed longer!

Her thoughtful touch made our visit feel incredibly personal and special. We also want to extend our thanks to the front desk team for ensuring we had everything we needed, including organizing a car for our departure and the sweet treats for our special occasion. And a heartfelt shoutout to the wonderful driver who picked us up from the train station and dropped us off– it was these small gestures that made us feel so well taken care of throughout our stay. The accommodations were luxurious, great mikimoto products, nice bedding-offering both comfort and tranquility. The food was absolutely exquisite – each meal was a work of art and a true reflection of the rich culinary traditions of the area. Hakone Gora Byakudan was easily the highlight of our Japanese anniversary adventure. From the moment you step inside this ryokan you are whisked away to a sanctuary of relaxation and calmness. Every detail is considered, even the check-in experience where you are invited to enjoy fresh matcha and Japanese sweets while the details of your stay are reviewed with you. I was hoping for a room with mountain views but everything was booked up so we originally had booked with another onsen. Finally a cancellation allowed us to book a room on a lower floor with a garden view and it was perfect and so serene. After traveling for a week in Japan, my entire body hurt from head to toe. Five minutes in our private onsen melted every ache and pain away. I also highly recommend utilizing the spa services. The facial I received was incredibly relaxing, so much that I drifted off halfway through! The 10 course kaiseki dinner featured multiple dishes in each course and considered both of our eating restrictions. Getting to grate my own fresh wasabi was really cool. The nihonshu (sake) we ordered was served in gorgeous glass vessel and matching glasses. I was delighted to see I could bring a set back to enjoy at home. The Western style bed was definitely the most comfortable bed of our entire trip. This experience was transformative and one I will never forget. Do not hesitate to book this ryokan with onsen if you can find availability.

Absolutely gorgeous ryokan and onsen. Our family of 4 stayed for two nights. The meals were superb, the staff were extremely attentive the hotel and room were gorgeous. We had an amazing time!

The property is really beautiful; gorgeous views, stunning room, and the private onsen is incredible. Absolutely no feedback on the room, grounds, staff, property, etc all amazing! It’s nice that dinner and breakfast are included given that you are quite a walk uphill from Gora and other restaurants. The food is presented in a beautiful setting and the service was wonderful. That being said, the food itself left much to be desired and given the price, we expected it to taste better.

My husband and I are both vegetarians, and the chef was able to make delicious vegetarian meals for us. The dinner we had was one of the best of our time in Japan. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. The room and private onsen were relaxing, and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The staff went above and beyond by providing us a ride to the Open Air Museum and then to the train station. We had an incredible time and would very highly recommend staying here!!

We would not recommend this hotel to visitors who do not speak Japanese. As English speakers, we had significant communication issues with the staff, which led to multiple service errors during our stay. We booked a 180-minute treatment that was confirmed by the front desk, but it was later canceled by the hotel due to staffing issues. We then scheduled a 120-minute in-room massage as an alternative, which was also confirmed. However, the therapists left after 60 minutes. The front desk apologized and informed us we would not be charged for the massage. I appreciated this gesture of compensation for the several errors the hotel made in our bookings. However, at checkout we were unexpectedly billed for a 60-minute massage, which contradicted what we had been told earlier and added to our overall frustration.

Outstandingly pleasant hotel and spa - and now one of our favourite hotels anywhere! So relaxing and hospitable. Nagisa, our meal host, was so lovely and helpful - a real standout. The whole team did a great job and made sure we had a fantastic stay.

We had an excellent stay and the overall property is very nice. We had a breakfast reservation at 9 and nobody attended to us until we reached put to someone and that’s here I have taken that one star off.

The staff was amazing, I forgot to ask the name of our specific help but we couldn’t stop talking about her the entire trip. She was amazing. Please if anything, give her a mountain of praise from us. We had an amazing stay at Byakudan. All the staff are friendly and helpful, food delicious, shuttle convenient, and the private onsen is DIVINE! It’s so relaxing with serene forest in front of you. It will definitely be our go to place whenever we go back to Hakone in the future.

In one word…stunning. An experience not to be missed. I don’t know where to begin with my praise-the staff, the facilities or the food? All impeccable.
