Nice rooms in an artdeco style, very clean. A little disappointing to just have nescafe instant coffee sachet and not even decent coffee bags in this standard of hotel. Also £2.50 for the small bottles of water in the room seemed a little steep. Location is a 15 minute walk into the center and close to the racecourse so ideal for many visitors. Car park was full so had to pay £18 for parking in another car park. Breakfast was nice and not bad value if pre booked although the coffee machine stopped working. Stay were all friendly and helpful.

I am somewhat unhappy in that I had one of the worst nights sleep. The reason for this was that the fan for the toilet which stays on 30 minutes past the light being turned off was very noisy and squealing not only that the room below when they put their light on Their fan was extremely noisy too which led to one of the worst nights sleep I’ve had in a hotel in years the reception didn’t seem to bothered when I reported it. I never usually comment negatively, but I don’t think anything will happen unless I do. One additional detail is that the hotel has EV chargers which you can never get to use them because combustible engine cars park in the spot's and the Hotel won’t do anything about it so what is the point of having the chargers and advertising them?

A special night away with my young great niece. York was her choice, and I chose the hotel which is lovely. The staff are adorable and the breakfast was really nice. The only disappointment, and I only saw previous feedback later...I booked this hotel specifically as it is advertised on Hotels.com as having a pool. It does NOT have a pool. This obviously isnt something that's just been commented on, and yet the advert remains unchanged. Not acceptable for a Hilton hotel. We didnt allow it to spoil our stay. The property is impressive inside and perfectly adequate for us.

Good location for walking into York and a beautiful old building. Staff are helpful and friendly however pool is a 15 minute walk away at another site so more of a case they know someone with a pool rather than having one. Hotel is split over 2 buildings, the hotel and the lodge, we where in the lodge across the road which is 3 floors with no lift so not really suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Room was nicely decorated and spacious but not as clean as it could be and probably a personal thing but had feather pillows which we struggled to get comfortable on and the noise from the room above sounded like a herd of cattle in steel toe cap boots running round. Breakfast was a mixed bag, full English was very poor but eggs Benedict was very good and because it is served in the main hotel block you have to leave the lodge and cross the road in all weathers to use. So overall the hotel building is beautiful and good service but don’t bother taking your swimming costume and I would recommend call ahead to ask for a room in the main building, ask for non feather pillows and stick to anything other than the full English for breakfast.

Hotel is great, could not fault. 25mins walk from the city, very handy buses. However please note, when it says limited parking there are 6 spaces for the entire hotel. (less than one space per 10 rooms)

The property was very nice and staff were very friendly and patience . The negatives were.... -Even tho it does say Gym and pool are nearby - its roughly 15-20mins walk -no smart tv -food on menu were very limited - no lift so not suitable for familiy with a toddler / young child

We had a lovely one night stay. The bedroom was beautifully decorated. We had a queen size bed which was very comfortable. The bathroom was stunning and a great size With a power shower and illuminated magnifying mirror. The location of the hotel is very convenient only a 15 minute walk to the centre of York. The only negative would be there was no parking available at the hotel as there was very limited spaces which were already taken. We did park on the school car park which was very close by for an additional £20.

Limited parking. We did get a space but were then worried about losing it, so left the car for the duration. Fortunately it's a short walk walk into town. But not ideal if you plan to explore further afield. Parking was also fairly expensive at £10 a night. Room was modern and clean. It had air conditioning but no opening windows, so was a bit musty smelling. A/C could not be turned down below 19C. Bed was ok. It was a kingsize, but quite springy. The room was a bit cramped, we had to move the bed over about 30cm to enable us to walk around the far side without climbing over it, but the headboard was attached to the wall. We were in the lodge and didn't really use the facilities in the main building. There is no lift but we were on the lower floor so just a few steps. There was a fridge in the room so we just used that. Breakfast in the hotel was excessive at £17 pppd so we did our own thing. Overall the stay was fine for the price we paid, but we would probably look elsewhere next time we visit York.

Location-wise, the hotel is quite far from the city, and also worth noting the pool you can use is not at the hotel but at one 15 min walk away (in direction of the city). Public areas are very nicely furnished, room was clean, bed comfortable, plenty of lights and plug sockets. Breakfast was good, waitress very friendly. Biggest negative was the night porter banging on a neighbouring door at 1am which woke me up. While it's good they acted on a complaint, surely they could've done it in a way that didn't disturb other guests.

Loved the hotel decor. The tiles in the bathroom were beautiful. I love art deco. The room a fair size. The bed was really comfy to sit and relax in but a bit too firm to sleep in comfortably. The room was also very dusty. We didn’t eat in the restaurant but it looked beautiful. Staff were friendly and helpful.

A lovely period hotel that was spotlessly clean and had very comfortable beds. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Just a short 20 minute walk in to the city centre. Would highly recommend and we'll definitely be returning.

Stayed at The Elmbank for two nights. The staff were extremely helpful without being intrusive. The location is a bit of a walk into the city although ideal if you are going to the races. The room was comfortable and well decorated as was the rest of the hotel. The bathroom although clean had quite a lot of mould staining in the tile grout. We also found hair next to the rubbish bin and dust on door hinges etc. the cleanliness of the room was not a big issue for us and certainly wouldn’t stop us staying again.

Great location. The room was lovely, very spacious, decorated well. Comfortable bed. We stayed in a suite which is across the road from the main hotel. Lovely reception area. Unfortunately our room wasn’t very clean. Dust on skirting boards and around corners of room. Grime on the shower. Smeary glass. Other than that we would stay again!!

Lovely and well kept hotel, especially the reception, restaurant and staircase areas. I asked if we could stay at a room in the house, not the courtyard, since the reviews mentioned that those were nice, and the staff helpfully moved us there. Service was excellent overall. The rooms themselves were comfortable and nicely decorated, although there were a couple cobwebs, the TV could do with an update and the body wash and lotion tubs in the bathroom needed a refill. The minibar looked a bit tired too. Other than that, we had a nice, confortable stay.

Very sweet and helpful woman at the front desk at check in. They noted our party would like to be adjacent and saved us connected rooms. Check in was quick and easy except their form requires 4 signatures per room which was a lot of signing after. A long trip. Our courtyard room was spotless, quiet and comfortable. It's small but very well appointed.

Shower head was full of limscale , taps buttons missing , air conditioning only works between 19-24 'C. Black mould in shower, windows doesn't open (room always hot and stuffy) no parking !!!! corridors are like maze took ages to find a room !!

Checked in receptionist pleasant enough. Room had not been cleaned properly- hair in the shower, hair on the floor, coffee stains in the sink, fridge filthy with sticky marks, hair and half bottle of water left behind. Complained no apology given but did upgrade us. The next room had hair on bathroom floor, the cleaning staff obviously don’t do attention to detail.Following morning went to shower and one towel had a black tar like substance on it, showed this to reception who were apologetic this time and needless to say did not charge us for the parking. Would not stay here again.

The room was on the other side of the road of the reception and in the basement. The rooms were not cleaned and up to the mark. There was dirt on the window sills and a spider and flies in the room.
The room was on the other side of the road of the reception and in the basement. The rooms were not cleaned and up to the mark. There was dirt on the window sills and a spider and flies in the room.

Nice property about 10-15 minutes walk to the railway station, lobby decoration has the vintage charm. Breakfast is good and restaurant has an outdoor terrace. What I was disappointed about was the court room that I received - it was at the end of court with extremely small windows. The room itself is clean and bathroom looks to be brand new, but the lack of normal windows and no chair/sofa in the room really upset me. There are 3 rooms at the end of the court and I got one of them (and I booked 3 months ago), and the other 7 or 8 of them all had regular windows, and I felt I was discriminated because I booked through Expedia. Other than the small windows, the entire court area looks like a different hotel than the main hotel as you pass by the garbage or housekeeping area. I felt this court addition should be improved, or they do not live up to the name of the hotel.

Room was pretty cold (17 C) but heating unit helped a bit. Room was a little dirty but it was ok. Parking possibility for 10 GBP/night. Breakfast was ok, nothing fancy. Pretty old building - brought nice vintage feel but ventilation lacking. Friendly staff!

Good location for walking into York and a beautiful old building. Staff are helpful and friendly however pool is a 15 minute walk away at another site so more of a case they know someone with a pool rather than having one. Hotel is split over 2 buildings, the hotel and the lodge, we where in the lodge across the road which is 3 floors with no lift so not really suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Room was nicely decorated and spacious but not as clean as it could be and probably a personal thing but had feather pillows which we struggled to get comfortable on and the noise from the room above sounded like a herd of cattle in steel toe cap boots running round. Breakfast was a mixed bag, full English was very poor but eggs Benedict was very good and because it is served in the main hotel block you have to leave the lodge and cross the road in all weathers to use. So overall the hotel building is beautiful and good service but don’t bother taking your swimming costume and I would recommend call ahead to ask for a room in the main building, ask for non feather pillows and stick to anything other than the full English for breakfast.

Elmbank has a lovely two bedroom suite in the loft. The room layout, bathroom and beds were very nice and it is difficult to find rooms like this for a family close to the city centre. Unfortunately the room is in a separate building and there is no lift. This was not mentioned on booking and sadly no assistance was offered on arrival, meaning we struggled with two children and lots of bags. There is only one small bin in the bathroom and nothing to use in any other rooms. As a family the children often need snacks, juice etc so this would improve the room. We also noticed that the floor was dusty and unswept. Many handles were broken and fineshes were poor. The cupboard used to store spare pillows was was also home to several bin bags of waste which were not even from our room, which is below the standard I would expect for Hilton and this price. I explained this to staff each day with no change. I would like to stay here again. York is lovely and the layout and location of this room were very good. I'm not sure the service met the price though.

Beautiful property. Really clean and well designed. We were very pleased with our room, bed was the most comfortable I’ve slept in! Shower lovely - hot and powerful. Only issue was a noisy family who were staying in the room above us, kept us awake at night and woke us very early in the morning. Due to wooden flooring and children running on the floors it impacted the quality of our sleep which was very disappointing. Parking wasn’t an issue as plenty of space. We had an evening meal in the restaurant which was delicious but the service was not particularly friendly or welcoming sadly. We would have expected a higher calibre of friendly staff for such a lovely hotel.

Limited parking. We did get a space but were then worried about losing it, so left the car for the duration. Fortunately it's a short walk walk into town. But not ideal if you plan to explore further afield. Parking was also fairly expensive at £10 a night. Room was modern and clean. It had air conditioning but no opening windows, so was a bit musty smelling. A/C could not be turned down below 19C. Bed was ok. It was a kingsize, but quite springy. The room was a bit cramped, we had to move the bed over about 30cm to enable us to walk around the far side without climbing over it, but the headboard was attached to the wall. We were in the lodge and didn't really use the facilities in the main building. There is no lift but we were on the lower floor so just a few steps. There was a fridge in the room so we just used that. Breakfast in the hotel was excessive at £17 pppd so we did our own thing. Overall the stay was fine for the price we paid, but we would probably look elsewhere next time we visit York.

The room was clean, staff were excellent. We stayed in a dog friendly room and we were in the courtyard area. Lovely gesture of a little dog gift box on arrival. Only negative was the heating system was extremely noisy and we were unable to have this on during the night due to the noise.

Overall very nice. Excellent service - helpful and swapped our room when the heating wasn’t working. We were a bit disappointed with the evening restaurant menu. Food was good but not a very exciting menu. Fresher options would have been nicer than burgers and fish and chips.

There’s the Elmbank hotel and lodge. We were given room 121 in new part of the hotel. Had poor sleep from doors banging shut. Carpet hadn’t been hoovered properly but otherwise was ok. Had to pay extra £10 for parking on premise.

Exemplary welcome. Couldn’t remember what type of room I had booked was allocated a courtyard room. Lovely clean, comfortable & safe accommodation. Chose to have the breakfast which was excellent. Used the bar both nights, good selection of beers, wines & spirits. Service was a little slow at times. On the morning of departure, after returning from breakfast, I was convinced I lost my wallet & panicked. The reception staff were very emphatic & reassuring. Head of housing keeping Chris offered to re:check the room. He was very polite & understanding. Asked my permission to look around for said wallet. He duly found it placed in another bag. I thank him so much for his kindness & not belittling me for not checking properly. On checking out all staff who knew what had happened were pleased the wallet had been found & wished me well. A huge thank you to all the team Elmbank team.

Everything from the staff to the decor was wonderful. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but as soon as you walk in you know you're going to have a great stay. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The bar staff were equally friendly. I had a ton in the courtyard and it was very clean and comfortable. I will definitely be staying here again.

3rd time we’ve stayed here, lovely hotel. Walkable distance into town and only 10-15 mins from train station. Nice rooms and facilities. Let down this time by breakfast service, only two staff trying to clear tables, take orders and ensure replenishment of self service area, that said the hot breakfast was delicious.

Hotel Review: Elmbank Hotel, York We traveled from Canada to England to visit our elderly parents in Darwen, Lancashire, and booked a short trip to York, staying at the Elmbank Hotel from June 17-19, 2024. Before our stay, I emailed the hotel to inform them that two members of our party of five had mobility issues. Upon arrival, we discovered our rooms were up several flights of stairs with no lift. However, once we explained our situation to Syikeen at reception, she couldn’t have been more accommodating. This young lady, along with the other staff, provided exceptional service and promptly relocated us to the main building on the ground floor. The rooms were huge and perfect for our needs. We had a fantastic stay. The bar staff were excellent, and the meal in the restaurant was delicious and well worth the money. The entire hotel was clean, inviting, and beautifully reflected its old-style heritage. We would definitely recommend the Elmbank Hotel. Julie and Mark Whalley

Elmbank is a 20 minute walk from city centre, but there is also a regular bus service right outside and going late into the night. The room was small but beautiful, finished to a very high standard. The communal areas and bar were a lovely place to sit and relax after a day of sight seeing by an open fire.

It was a lovely hotel that was unique and clean. Staff was. very friendly as well. The only downside was parking. It did say there was parking for 10 pounds but it is very limited. We had to pay 18 pounds to park near hotel in school parking lot. Also, a continental breakfast to be included would be nice touch.

Lovely hotel and staff. Location is great - in a safe residential area and walkable into the town. Our courtyard room is a bit noisy from other guests’ bathrooms, backs onto a private resident’s garden. No window views unless you stand and can see into their garden(!). Overall, a very nice hotel, comfortable.

This hotel has loads of character. If you’re looking for something modern and high-tech, it’s probably not the place for you. But I felt like I got an authentic Yorkshire experience. The location is really good. Outside the city walls, so it’s easy to maneuver with a car. But only about a 10 minute walk from the center, so it was easy to get there (even in the middle of a rain storm, which I gather is not unusual). It’s unlikely I’ll travel again to York, as I feel I’ve checked it off the list. But if fate brings me there, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay at the Elmbank again.

Sophisticated hotel with a nice mixture of contemporary and modern features located a short distance from the city walls and train station. Upon entry the reception, lobby, dining and bar areas are impressive displaying hardwood panelled walls, stained glass windows and various antiques. We never got to dine there but did use the bar a few times and the service was very good. Our room (no 17) was located in the modern courtyard annexe on the ground floor, it was small but suitable for a short stay was well appointed, clean and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was smart, clean and modern and fitted with disabled persons facilities i.e. grab rails, seated shower etc. however the only hand basin was very small and deep meaning that when used water would spray up from the bottom and wet the floor in that area. I thing that basin would be more suited to a cloakroom. The wardrobe which also contains a small safe and fridge ( which seemed to be overheating ) was located in such a tight corner that the door could not fully open. Overall it was a good experience and i would stay there again but would look at other room options.

Overall very nice. Excellent service - helpful and swapped our room when the heating wasn’t working. We were a bit disappointed with the evening restaurant menu. Food was good but not a very exciting menu. Fresher options would have been nicer than burgers and fish and chips.

This is a unique hotel In a good area and close to the town centre 10 minute walk. The restaurant was limited and not very inspiring and the bar was not well stocked but breakfast was great.

The room was beautifully decorated however there were large cobwebs in the bedroom and thick layers of dust in the communal corridors. The website advertised food service until 21:30 but at 21:06 we were turned away from the restaurant and had a small offering from the bar. Having been on the road since 15:00 this was disappointing.

The property and staff and everything about the hotel was brilliant my only gripe would be the breakfast was a bit of a let down, very limited food and in particular no beans fried eggs or hash browns

All day menu displayed on the bar. Tried to order sandwiches at 2pm,told that a chef was not available till around 3.30pm. Very disappointed, only floor in an otherwise excellent accommodation. Mark and Tracey.

Amazing hotel, the staff are so lovely and conscientious, the breakfast staff were so accommodating of my gluten intolerance and so kind and patient with my daughter, the room was lovely and courtyard was so nice. Would definitely visit again, the only down side was the first night the entrance to the room had a strange smell but it was gone by the next afternoon.

We really loved the power shower and the bed was very comfortable but the room we had was next to a door that was meant to be fire exit only but was used all night which made it hard to sleep as it banged very loudly. We also weren’t overly impressed with the room service offering, we ordered the same thing (just sandwiches) on different nights and the second time we’re told we couldn’t have something removed and then when it came it was completely a different standard to the first one (different bread/layout/size) we also had to wait for room service to restart although it’s meant to be 24/7 and the member of staff was quite abrupt

Great location and beautiful building. Nice rooms and breakfast. Staff great. Only issue is the bottled water in the rooms. You would ordinarily assume these are included but they are for Hilton Honours members only. Seems a bit stingy to me!

Super charming, beautiful, and comfortable. We. Sites with our two teenagers and would definitely stay there again. The only issue was that we were put in ‘the attic’ across the street and had to lug ourselves and our suitcases up 4 flights of stairs! This came as a surprise, as we were only told at check-in that we were on the ‘top floor’. (They really buried the lead) We just kept turning corners to find more stairs -it reached a point of hilarity. Luckily we are able-bodied, I don’t know how anyone with even a dodgy ankle could manage, much less something more serious. We also had to trek back down to the desk later that night for the WiFi password, which meant an extra trip up 70-something steps. The room was a little chilly and there were no extra blankets provided -that would be helpful in the future. Otherwise, a great experience and hope to return someday.

This hotel had beautiful art deco decor in the lobby and restaurant. Breakfast was included and it was well done and a good value. We liked that it was a few blocks from the town and therefore quiet yet still easily walkable.
