Red Lion Inn & Suites Des Moines

Upon check-in (late at night) given a run down smoking room designated for pets so the smells were atrocious- furniture was marred and scratched. No other rooms available that night. Next night moved us to different room and floor and it was nicer. Had a jacuzzi tub which we used one morning. Next morning they told me that we weren’t supposed to use the tub and had accused us of turning on the plumbing as apparently the tub leaked down two floors unbeknownst to us. (A sign or tape or actually turning the water off would be great starts to communicating maintenance issue). The only saving grace was the maintenance guy who was as kind as could be and also doubled as the night clerk.

Although online it says they have breakfast and a pool, they do not. Entire building smells of weed and it was worse in our- non smoking room. Not all the towels were clean and the floor was sticky. Do not recommend staying here.

Had outside people coming in building and knocking on my door 4 times thruout the night! Felt unsafe. No phone to call office, no phone number to call the office any way?? Almost had to call 911. My guess is that they wanted something illegal.

The room could use a really good cleaning. Hair in shower. No security, back door wide open.

My jetted tub wasn’t jetted and that was the whole reason for the stay it was Broken but I would go back

The positives, convenient location, beds were clean & comfortable, a working refrigerator, and friendly staff. The negatives, ants in bathroom, hair in both sink & bathtub, sink faucet leaked from base all over the counter anytime water was running, noisy (loud people in hallways and other rooms), limited amount of convenient parking.

There is no in room coffee maker. I miss it.

There was no security measures in the room beyond a deadbolt. The usual hydraulic bar was gone, and there was no bar latch across the door. The parking in the back often had a bunch of people just sitting in their cars smoking. Our room door handle also was barely functional

Jacuzzi tub was missing jets and had NO pressure, air intake for tub was broken and filled with black mold. Floor in shower was extremely slick and had hair all over the shower walls. I definitely will not be staying here again.

Great customer service, but my only concern was homeless people park there cars at the hotel back parking lot.

Very dirty room with the floor clearly not being vacuumed shown by hair all over the floor. Bed sheets also had hair on them when comforter pulled back. Attendant checking in at front desk was very distracted and kept repeating herself. Continental breakfast was very disappointing and we ended up going down the road for something to eat.

The hotel room was verry dirty. Had dirty towels on the bathroom floor and was not cleaned at all.

I have stayed at other Red Lion locations and have never been in such dirty room before. This is substandard to Red Lion. Dirt is on the curtains, walls, TV, bathroom. Bathroom celing has mold on it! To close door to the bathroom you need to stand in the tub?! This is how tiny it is. Paint is peeling everywhere! Bed is so hard i felt as if i layed on layer of bricks.Outside is not safe and dirty! They should have inspector come in to close them down! I cannot believe they charged me so much as $130 for the night. I got pictures to show what is going on there.

It looked like they barely cleaned before we checked in. Hair all over the bedding and floor. The floor had food particles or something on the ground. The area used to be okay.. however now is in a very sketchy area.

The best thing was the attention of the reception staff, the worst thing was that the room was dirty, dirty sheets, dirty bathroom. The ceiling was falling, the floor super dirty.

The front desk staff is very friendly and helpful. It was fun hanging out with them, chatting, and getting to know them. They made the stay 100% worth while! My only complaint is the room was filled with ants. The bed was comfortable and cleaning staff did a good job of keeping the rooms and building clean (minus the infestation of ants).

Room was small but very clean and I found. No issues enjoying a good night of sleep. Street can be noisy I imagine if you are on the street but I was back offthe street so very good.

A bar right behind the hotel and music and automobiles were loud at all hours. But the bed was great!

It was okay. Besides the fact that the AC was noisy, I couldn't sleep because I didn't feel safe.

We had a suite, with one chair, no couch or other seating. The continental breakfast.was terrible, fruit pass its prime, very limited choice for food, no OJ with a very poor tasting orange drink. Could hear loud noise in other rooms. Will not return here!

The room was fine for my purpose, clean if with a slight scent of deodorizer, the price and location were fine. Little noise in the room. I was expecting the usual limited breakfast, which was not provided owing to remodeling being done. Still, the room had a small refrigerator, and a microwave oven that worked, if not terribly well -- the turntable lacked mechanical connection to the motor. No problem with the TV, and WiFi worked very well. The entrance was not easy to find due to fencing on new construction next door. I didn't have much enthusiasm for the neighborhood, though at least it was away from the airport. Yes, I would certainly consider another stay at this motel.

Not a bad place to stay. Staff was very nice and accommodating. We did have an issue with our room key so they put us in a different room, however they didn't change it in the system. So at 2am we got woken up by someone else coming into our room.

The front desk gentleman James made our stay amazing! He was funny, kind, and personable! We thank you James! Rooms could be a little cleaner we found hair in toilet/ shower area. Bed was comfortable, room and hotel quiet.

Unsafe is the best word to describe this location. I was so disappointed and shocked this was a Red Lion location! I couldn't sleep due to fear and the noise you could hear on every floor. The front desk associate acted like he couldn't care less about our stay or safety. We couldn't get in our room with the keys for 10 minutes and he had to come help, not so willingly. There were crowds of people smoking in the parking lot and they looked like they'd seen better days. There was dog poop everywhere outside. The TV on the room didn't work. It was awful!

No one was there to check me in, the key didn’t work, the tv was broken, the room was hot and A/C was off. Just terrible all around.

No one at the front desk - we waited for an hour. It is now 9 PM. We will need to find another hotel. I have never seen this before- I need to have a refund through Expedia.

Never again. This place was as seedy as it gets. Checked into our room and it smelled horrible like cigarettes. So bad I went back to the desk and switched rooms. Second room didn’t smell like cigarettes and seemed cleaner but there was no ice bucket liner and the tissue dispenser was empty. One of the two keys didn’t work. The parking lot was covered in garbage and where we had to park behind the hotel had homeless and obviously drug addicts hanging out. Looked like crack central. The evening was horrible as there were cars with load rap music blaring outside and people talking and yelling and then the motorcycles started to rev there engines up and down at 2:00 in the morning. Did not feel safe with my wife and son here at all but we just stayed locked in our room until we left early the next morning. The room was non refundable and we checked in later so decided to just ride it out. Beware of this place at all costs.

First off the location is super sketchy. Someone in a run down person car unloading white sheets they look like they bought out Ross and TJmaxx. Found out later they were low on sheet. People hanging out in lobby to watch TV or charge phone that dont have a room there. Drug deals happening in the parking lot. Some guy was scoping out the inside of cars including mine. I have to find out where i can share pictures... there were ants everywhere, including inside the sheets of my bed...a hair tie that didnt belong to me inside the the bed, tub was disgusting. I went down stairs to get new sheet to remake my bed he gave me the sheet that had been bought earlier that day and told me they were brand new..upon grabbing them and walking up stairs a stench of vinegar came from them my husband told me to go get new one again...thinking about it there wansnt enough time to unpack, wash, dry and fold all the sheets..I asked the front desk guy if these were washed he said yes and I said what happened was they were sprayed with vinegar after fluffing them up in the dryer straight from the box. Staff was weird. Especially the breakfast guy..he was talking about how much he looks alot young than 53. He kept creeping on my kids too touched my 5 year old daughters hair twice. Unfortunately I chose this hotel because it was okay priced because we drive up the night before our cruise. I would never stay there again.

Jaimes was very nice as i cancelled my second night cause we felt unsafe. And you have random people driving thru the hotel parking and you have apartments surrounding the property so you have all kinds of people everywhere.

Broken windows, terrible area ghetto

The bed was uncomfortable, hotel hallways were stinky, and the parking lot sketchy. However, the worst part was the parking lot right next to the hotel where there’s a bar and people like to party until 3-4 AM. Loud motorcycles, stereo systems, and cars backfiring kept us up until after 3 AM.

While the stay at the hotel, there was a shooting outside our room. Scary!! Will not stay here again. One side has nice condos and the other side has a dumpy ghetto trailer park with a bar that played music until 2am. Didn’t feel comfortable to allow anyone to walk to the car by themselves.

Shocked this little hole in the wall motel had the Red Lion name. Very sketchy location, didn't feel safe. Condition and cleanliness were subpar. Other peoples hair in the tub, stained carpet throughout the hallways. We didn't even entertain their continental breakfast. Putting a red X next to this one to never stay here again.

Front desk staff was helpful and friendly. It took an extra trip to the desk and 4 key cards to get one that worked. Facility cleanliness, safety and maintenance disappointing. Back door “emergency” exit was ajar both times we went by it; including at 1 a.m. Hair in sink and shower. Stains on walls. “Film” on toilet seat that I could wipe off with toilet paper. No hair dryer. No working breakfast bar. Too much poor quality maintenance for the price.

No breakfast?? It is on the Expedia advert! Checkin was adequate, desk forgot to give us a key, which we realized on our way to the room. Room was well used but fairly clean. Things like candle soot stain in shower, tumble of hair, lint and left behind plastic knife behind door (i guess cleaner does not check there), toilet paper holder coming off the wall (and obviously "fixed" many times previously.) But I real really disappointed that there is no breakfast - although it is posted on the ad. When I checked in the sort of "um" and "uh" about it and this morning, the morning clerk said, "there is no breakfast, but you did not pay extra for it!" Actually breakfast was a condition of selection. If I would have know no breakfast I would not stay here. For sure won\'t return.

So for what I paid I'm totally cool with the fact that it was a bit dirty. My main issue is the false advertising regarding breakfast. How do you say there's a continental breakfast when there is zero breakfast? There's even a picture of eggs, bacon and pastries in one of the hotel pics. If you're going to advertise breakfast y'all need to provide it. Red Lion should revise their listing on Expedia as it appears the lack of breakfast issue has been ongoing for some time.
