The property was very close to town but in a nice quiet area. The rooms were excellent and everything of high quality. The pub itself was lovely, a very cool and unique place to stay.

Gorgeous rooms with a real touch of personality. The location was perfect and there’s a NCP car park right next door. The staff were really lovely too. The courtyard is a lovely place to sit out and have a drink and the food is brilliant too. Lovely touch with complimentary port and flapjacks. Definitely recommend this hotel.

Quaint little boutique hotel with plenty of gathering space when traveling with others. The not so secret garden is an awesome place to eat, drink and socialize. The staff are so nice and helpful!

What a great little hotel. The opposite of what you'd get at a soulless chain hotel, full of nooks and crannies, old world charm, quirky but comfortable too. We loved the bedroom too, so comfortable. It's just a stones throw from the centre of Exeter, the cathedral and quayside area as well as the catacombs etc. Excellent food too at City Gate and lots of great restaurants to try out nearby too. Pretty much no downsides. Parking was an issue. Breakfast was gorgeous if a little pricey. Otherwise I couldn't recommend City Gate enough. Allan & Mags

The rooms and bar / lounge area were very welcoming and clean, with an amazing outdoor covered area. The room had a lovely decor with a well stocked mini bar and good quality linen. The customer service from Lucie was excellent and she was very helpful and knowledgable. Will definitely be staying here again.

Excellent refurbished pub hotel, good location, comfortable rooms with good ac and our room had a propper full size bath tub. huge outdoor patio area and nice pub. Glass of port and a flapjack on arrival in the room, great start and best welcome gift i have recieved in a hotel 🙂. The only issue being dinner is advertised as served till 9.30pm on the menu in the room but at 8.58pm we were told the kitchen is closed. Not a big deal as plenty of places nearby but annoying and lost sales for the business.

The staff were warm and friendly , bar area was nice and atmospheric, the room wasnt brilliant, lots of maintenance needed not really worth nearly £700 have stayed in much better places for that amount if they were to receive a make over then i probably would come back

GREAT staff, great location. Second stay at the city gate, definitely the go to in Exeter if you want attention to detail. Complimentary port and Nespresso in the room, along with a great mini bar. Comfy beds and always perfectly clean rooms.

The hotel is nice and centrally located walking distance down to the key side and into the city centre. The room sit on top of a pub so if you're on the first floor there can be a little bit of noise if they have a party in which they did on the Friday night that we were there. The bed was comfortable in a large room won't AC, however the Internet connection was a bit hit and miss sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't but other times it was painfully slow. For me, the bathroom really let the stay down there was black mould all around the shower cubicle and I can't help but feel that the grouting could've just been replaced pretty cheaply. I really felt that I didn't want to go in that shower but obviously had no choice. We did ask for our room to be cleaned as they asked us when we checked in and despite us being out for most of the day on Saturday they came in when we did so we had to turn them away as we needed to get ready to go out that Saturday evening. I'm sure at one point this hotel would've been absolutely beautiful, but it is in need of some refurbishment, but if you can get past the bathroom and want something reasonably priced in a great location, then go for it.

This was a convenient location to High Street. However, it was not clean. Gunk came out of the bathroom fan all over our toothbrushes etc. Our room was cleaned only once for a three day stay. The reception area was dirty. The fire alarm went off at 12:30 am. Had to wait outside 30 minutes. Staff was not on site. No apologies from staff next day. Would not recommend.

Our check in was lovely, as was the waitress service at breakfast but for £260 the room was in a poor state and definitely not worth the money paid. We have written an email to the property to explain our disappointment. The room was dirty and in need of some immediate maintenance and we had no hot water at all during our stay (had cold showers for our daughters graduation) We reported this but received no response at all. The poor breakfast waitress was running around trying to do everything in her own at 8:30am in the morning. Absolutely not £260 of accommodation I’m afraid. Beautiful building but not looked after or maintained.

The position of the hotel is perfect for a visit to Exeter. It is just a short walk from the main centre. The personnel who work at the hotel were helpful and friendly. The room was clean and we had super thick towels. However, the hotel is in need of attention. The paintwork needs painting and the carpets in the corridors need an upgrade; the taps in our room were twisted as they moved from the base; the sash windows do not work and we needed a small log to keep them open. In addition, the TV was not reliable although the manageress tried to assist with it. We ate breakfast there one morning. There was a range of choices although combining them was pricey. First of all the property was amazing. The pub/restaurant was cozy and beautiful. Our room was comfortable and very clean. The staff were very attentive and helpful. We had issues with our tv and also transportation issues due to train strikes. The staff helped us immediately and made our stay very enjoyable. Lastly, the breakfast was amazing. Thank you !!

The decor is very well done and I found the bed to be extremely comfortable. The bathroom is very spacious and well presented. The only negative points I have about the room 5 is the seal round the shower screen is leaking. Meaning water pours onto the floor and has lead to mould and a damp smell in the corner of the room.

Very kind staff, good location, lovely decor, and sweet welcome gift. Walls are thin, however, with slopping and creaking floors (and bed), and an overly complicated and temperamental TV. Have already noted to management that the WiFi requires far too much personal information in order to log in. Feels intrusive and corporate for an otherwise homey place.

One of the best Boutique hotels that I have ever stayed in. The room was tastefully furnished, whilst the food in the restaurant was of a very high quality. However, the thing that really stood out was the personal touch. The staff refer to guests by their name and will take the time to discuss how you are enjoying your stay. The complimentary port and flapjacks just add to the good will they generate.

The room was small even though we paid extra for deluxe. I wouldn’t call the deluxe the standard they portrayed in photos. Shower was really poor. Too hot or Too cold and no pressure. Room had a bad odour location good but no parking .

Fantastic staff and service. Rooms much better equipped and nicer furnishings than larger Exeter Hotels, well stocked mini bar and snacks in the room, even had a sky box! Evening meal was fantastic, cooked breakfast cooked fresh and very god quality. Will definitely be our regular Exeter Hotel from now on - can not believe we have not discovered it sooner!

When we went to check in the computer system wasn't working. Of course these things happen, however an invitation to take a seat an offer of a complimentary drink whilst it rebooted would've made all the difference... plus clear directions to the room.. none of which were forthcoming. Shame, cos the bed itself was really comfy and the room had nice decor.

Really nice hotel near the city centre. Very short walk away from train stations (Exeter Central and Exeter St David's) and the cathedral. The room was a great size and very clean. There was also some complimentary port and flapjacks which was a lovely surprise when we arrived. The breakfast was really tasty and decently priced (£15 for a cooked breakfast, unlimited hot drinks, and a small continental breakfast buffet). Only negative for me was that it was sometimes quite hard to find a member of staff. There was no one on the reception desk when we wanted to check in/out, but managed to get someone from the bar to help us both times. Staff were very friendly - just a bit elusive!

This was a convenient location to High Street. However, it was not clean. Gunk came out of the bathroom fan all over our toothbrushes etc. Our room was cleaned only once for a three day stay. The reception area was dirty. The fire alarm went off at 12:30 am. Had to wait outside 30 minutes. Staff was not on site. No apologies from staff next day. Would not recommend.

Our check in was lovely, as was the waitress service at breakfast but for £260 the room was in a poor state and definitely not worth the money paid. We have written an email to the property to explain our disappointment. The room was dirty and in need of some immediate maintenance and we had no hot water at all during our stay (had cold showers for our daughters graduation) We reported this but received no response at all. The poor breakfast waitress was running around trying to do everything in her own at 8:30am in the morning. Absolutely not £260 of accommodation I’m afraid. Beautiful building but not looked after or maintained.

The rooms and bar / lounge area were very welcoming and clean, with an amazing outdoor covered area. The room had a lovely decor with a well stocked mini bar and good quality linen. The customer service from Lucie was excellent and she was very helpful and knowledgable. Will definitely be staying here again.

What a great little hotel. The opposite of what you'd get at a soulless chain hotel, full of nooks and crannies, old world charm, quirky but comfortable too. We loved the bedroom too, so comfortable. It's just a stones throw from the centre of Exeter, the cathedral and quayside area as well as the catacombs etc. Excellent food too at City Gate and lots of great restaurants to try out nearby too. Pretty much no downsides. Parking was an issue. Breakfast was gorgeous if a little pricey. Otherwise I couldn't recommend City Gate enough. Allan & Mags

The position of the hotel is perfect for a visit to Exeter. It is just a short walk from the main centre. The personnel who work at the hotel were helpful and friendly. The room was clean and we had super thick towels. However, the hotel is in need of attention. The paintwork needs painting and the carpets in the corridors need an upgrade; the taps in our room were twisted as they moved from the base; the sash windows do not work and we needed a small log to keep them open. Attractive quirky pub, surprisingly quiet in the centre of town. Very helpful and charming staff who sorted out a pricing discrepancy with Expedia for me. I hope my clickbait title has you reading this as my stay here was exceptional apart from the smallest of issues. The room was spacious and very well equipped and the breakfast was easily one of the best I’ve experienced in my travels apart from…. The menu stated my selection came with sour dough and it came with an equally nice toasted white bloomer….so a very minor fault indeed. Stay here, you won’t regret it.

First of all the property was amazing. The pub/restaurant was cozy and beautiful. Our room was comfortable and very clean. The staff were very attentive and helpful. We had issues with our tv and also transportation issues due to train strikes. The staff helped us immediately and made our stay very enjoyable. Lastly, the breakfast was amazing. Thank you !!

Excellent refurbished pub hotel, good location, comfortable rooms with good ac and our room had a propper full size bath tub. huge outdoor patio area and nice pub. Glass of port and a flapjack on arrival in the room, great start and best welcome gift i have recieved in a hotel 🙂. The only issue being dinner is advertised as served till 9.30pm on the menu in the room but at 8.58pm we were told the kitchen is closed. Not a big deal as plenty of places nearby but annoying and lost sales for the business.
