The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta - Handwritten Collection

I have only negative about this hotel. You have to pass through the restaurant to go to and from the entrance to your room. The staff kept asking if I was there to dine every time I passed through. Otherwise, it was very clean and very well located. Most things were walkable.

A step back in time, but with modern values . Phoenix seem to balance it perfectly.

The room spotless and clean.

This is a stunning building in a great location in Yogyakarta. Probably one of the most attractive hotels we have ever stayed at. However, it is currently running the risk of becoming dated. Obviously I understand the colonial theme is vital to this hotel, however the fixtures and fittings are a bit worn and the place could do with a bit of a refresh. The staff are exceptional and we received a very warm welcome. Breakfast was good with a good range of food and drink. The restaurant for dinner and the room service offering was below par for a hotel of this standard. Although it was fairly priced, the food was nothing exceptional. Very generic Hotel food and even signature dishes like the Nasi Goreng weren't particularly exciting. It is not as good as the Indonesian food I can get in London, which I found really surprising. I think a lick of paint and some improved cleaning of the bathrooms would go a long way. The corners were quite dirty and there was lots of dirt and stuff behind the beds which showed they hadn't been moved to be cleaned. Re the laundry service we ended up with somebody else's socks and the pair of jeans we sent for washing came back with marks on. The drainage in the shower was very instead of going into the drain actually went away from the drain. So whoever tiled this did a substandard job and must have missed physics class! This means you have to stand in dirty water. Overall, it's a great hotel and I would return if the small tweaks were made.
