What did not match expectations was the sense of seclusion and calm the property suggests. There are a lot of guests for the small number of common areas available, so you rarely feel you have space to yourself. The indoor onsen is also open to day use visitors who are not staying at the hotel, which meant it was crowded every single time we tried to use it. Being unable to properly enjoy the main bath at a ryokan of this level was a real disappointment. The fireplace lounge can be reserved privately and closed off entirely. During our stay a group had booked it, so we had no access at all to one of the very few shared spaces on the property. This is an impressive place in terms of architecture and atmosphere. But if you are coming for exclusivity and tranquility, that is not what the stay delivers.

The half board Japanese meals were one of the best we have had. The onsen was fabulous, especially the outdoor part. Though I should have been mindful that the one called O was opened to public during certain hours. It was a bit crowded during those times. All in all, a lovely stay !

Newer, gorgeous property with Ainu elements at a serene part of the small town. Nice, minimally designed room with great view of the lake, great for a relax trip. Onsen water is brownish and feels v therapeutic, smoothening for the skin. Food is alright, breakfast portion is a little small. Unlike other similar grade onsen hotels, there is no drinks provided in the room - only a jug of water, this is rather disappointing. Can't be sure the water is fresh. If this is due to environmental practice, the hotel could have provided water in aluminium can...
