A giant hotel building dating from 1911. Some of the common areas are poorly lit; common areas generally lack "atmosphere". Room huge. No coffee making facilities. Shower cubicle did not drain well; water came close to overflowing. Breakfast disappointing. Items not replenished often enough; some containers completely empty from one day to the next. Fried eggs very dried out, but still offered by server. Hotel is on the very north east of Marienbad. 10 minute uphill climb from kolonnade.

We stayed at the Esplanade during a heatwave. This five stars hotel has air-conditioning in every room, but it is limited to 5 degrees Celsius below the outside temperature, which meant the temperature in the room was between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius. We complained repeatedly and the reception claimed they could not help because the temperature is regulated to the whole hotel and they could do nothing, they promised repeatedly that a technician will appear (they never did), and then they sent us a fan and sparkling wine in ice.... This is a gross failure of management who attempted to save money in a heatwave by frying its guests. All the other wonderful things about the hotel--nice pool, great sumptuous breakfast, great location and views, good restaurant, amount to nothing when guests cannot sleep at night because it is too hot and they are running with sweat, all because management could not bear to allow the A/Cs to run to save a bit of money. This is still a great hotel, but not for European summers. I hope they do not save more money in the winter by not heating....

Good: Beautiful building and rooms. Staff were friendly and professional. Wonderful breakfast with eggs cooked to order. The chef was great. Can be improved: Swimming pool was pleasant though I noticed the ceiling should be cleaned. No tea or coffee in the room. At such a high level hotel, I would expect to have a cup of coffee. They had nice chess tables next to the billiards with drawers for pieces but no pieces for them. It would have been nice to play a game of chess on the large chess tables.
