The Shoreline Inn

This hotel serviced our needs excellently. You can’t beat the location next to the lake and businesses. We enjoyed the morning sunrises with easy access to the deck. We could have enjoyed them from the room but chose the deck. The deck is also a great place to meet and chit chat with others who are staying. We had a bonfire one night. This is not a fancy hotel and things are outdated - but we aren’t fancy people. No complaints on cleanliness. Breakfast served its purpose.

Hotel is in a great location with great views of the lake. Right in town so walkable to shops and restaurants and harbor. Hotel is old (1950’s) and is in disrepair. Buckets in hallway to catch rainwater from leaking roof. Room doors are loose from the hinges and need to be lifted to close them.

The staff was nice, and location is great. The building needs a lot of work. Our bathroom sink was clogged the whole time despite several efforts to fix. There were buckets in the hallway to catch the water from the leaking roof. Looks like general maintenance has been neglected. Liked that it was dog friendly.

Needs major updates. Ceiling in hallway was leaking and carpet was wet and stained badly. No elevator. One accessible plug in bedroom. Great location and patio overlooking the lake. The whole place seems like it should be closed down fo a major update.

We felt the biggest asset to this hotel was the outside patio facing Lake Superior. unfortunately, we never sat out there because it was generally unkept and lots of bird droppings. The windows in our room were also so full of bird droppings, so disgusting we were reluctant to open our drapes.

The patio was great for early morning coffee or an evening drink. Beautiful view of the lake. Our room could use some updating but it was clean and the staff was very nice.

Deck on Superior was great.

It badly needed updating, fixing up, window repair, we could use an elevator, very small breakfast area, expensive for what we received, shower head was way too low.

Fan in bathroom which went on with the bathroom light, was extremely loud. Desk clerk said, new replacement fans were on order, but had not arrived yet. Location in town was excellent. Outside deck was nice, too; with great view of Lake Superior and Artist Point Peninsula.

Location and patio. Reasonably priced plus amenities. Excellent value.

It has a great location. It is an older building with some need of repair. My room was nice and clean. The staff were friendly. The continental breakfast was satisfactory. I would staying there again.

Location was great. The room was not clean. Ceiling in our room was old office style panels with one old fluorescent light bulb working, and water stains. Spider webs in windows. Fan had not been cleaned in sometime.

Parking was safe, room was very clean and roomy, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is located near all the shops and lake. We were able to walk to all.

Beautiful view and absolutely lovely shops all within walking distance. Windows were dirty, lots of cob webs and spiders in various locations. NO AC IN ROOMS, was very warm during the day, but lovely in the evenings with the breeze coming off the water.

Really not worth the price. I should’ve looked at reviews before booking and really regret staying here. No hot water, not exactly clean, super dated, weird smell, woke up to a bug crawling on me. I wouldn’t have minded the state of things if I’d payed $50, but this place was way over priced. Great location though! It’s a shame they’ve let this property get to this state.

Hotel was run down, not clean, broken windows, swarm of flies in the lobby. Not the kind of hotel Expedia should be using.

Very outdated and run down property. The location is great but not enough to save this place. The smells were really the hardest part to get over. Very stinky, stained carpets and just plain filthy!

Staff were nice, and the location was excellent. Great water views. Easy walk to everything in Grand Marais. However, carpeting was too old to look clean, there were two wet towels from previous guests hanging on the back of the bathroom door. Towels were frayed. Found mouldy bread in the breakfast area, where both coffee carafes had orange handles marked "not decaf." Again, nice staff, but the place needs a re-do.

The windows to see the lake view was clouded over. The room was dirty. There is no A/C, they said the sea breeze cools down the room. That is not true, because there was only one small window that had a screen. Also, if people have a bon fire outside the window you can't have the window open. The person checking us in was helpful and the bed was comfortable.

I can not say enough positive things about this hotel! Monica and all of the staff were very accommodating! Yes, it’s older. It’s actually the oldest hotel in Grand Marais. If you are looking for a cozy place to rest your head after exploring the city or hiking the beautiful trails this is the place! Comfy bed, great views of the lake! (Make sure to request a lake facing room) Right dead center of the town, very walkable location!

Agree with previous reviews, excessive heat in the rooms, no coffee maker, no available electrical outlets, poor water pressure, and strange door lock system. The price is right, though, and I would stay here again.

This place is pretty run down. Besides just being dated, the bed was uncomfortable, the bathroom floor was sticky, and the door could see light through the side with the security device also being broken. Icing on the cake was the credit card fee thrown on at the end. The positive is the location is great and view out the back was great. It pretty much ends there, though.

First of all ,I asked for a king size bed with a lake view the hotel scratched out my original room and put us on the road side.Went and asked for the original room booked ,we got it . The room was very dated the main window to look out to the lake was doubled paneled had moisture so you could not see the lake.the other 2 side windows had no screen on one of them ...no microwave in the room ,no ice available and small fridge which was ok ...It was 80 degrees in the room with no way to control the temperature,so we had to sleep with the windows open all night.we had no warm water whats so ever ..Front desk girl said they called for service for the water ...but looking at other reviews this happens a lot ..how can you keep a hotel open with no warm to hot running water ..The computer to check in kept crashing so that as 20min ..The hotel as managment says in other reviews "retro " this is not retro what so ever ..This management should be ashamed of themselves to have this hotel open and to serve the public .You drive long dustance ,you need to shower and cant ..no discount was offered to us at all until we asked .Id hate to see if a young family was to stay there and be abandoned.I have teaveled the world ,very experienced traveler,so I am not over exaggerating..The public needs to be aware before booking ..Thank you for the time to read this

The room was very hot, and did not have any workable thermostat, luckily we could open a window.

Rooms were old and need updating. Could not control the temp in the room and it was hot. Had to open a window.

The front desk staff were friendly & helpful for any questions. The locks on the doors were being changed, and so we had to share our key with our friends who were also staying there. Kind of strange. The room was spacious and just fine for the amount of time we were in the room; basically just to sleep. The beds could really use an update, as could the carpet and the windows. It was nice to have the fridge in the room, and also a fan, since it was quite warm in Grand Marais when we were there. For the money, it was just fine, since reservations are very, very difficult to get at this time of year.

The hotel is quite run down. The hallways needed a bucket to catch rain water. The carpets are stained. The rooms are cooled with open windows, but one of our two windows labeled a bug screen.

Check in wasn’t great since place was Locked until 4. They insisted I had not paid so paid for stay of 3 nights. Checked VISA bill and found I did pay on March 13, 2024. Was told they changed companies and payment was lost. I would have to call VISA card and deny earlier payment. We were told there was no choices of up or down so was put on second floor at end. Husband found stairs difficult. Also it was very warm and we had no air. But had a fan. Window ledges full of bugs (I cleaned off). We never saw or heard of any maid service. We used same towels for 3 days. I could not get a paper print out of bill until morning we left. We left before office open. Continental breakfast at 7 (too late) but no one there first morning until going on 8. Location was great.

Monica was amazing! She helped us with our room and was incredibly gracious and friendly. We will be back because of her!

The staff were the friendlist hotel staff i have ever encountered. Helpful, made me feel at home. I would definitely stay here every time in Grand Marais.

Booked our June trip back in February, even called Shoreline to verify that they had my reservation. Everything was good and confirmed. After driving 6 hours for our family vacation, we Arrived and we were told my reservation was cancelled and that they can’t control what third party apps do. Front desk said Expedia cancelled my reservation. I’m not one who likes to show strangers my emotions, but I couldn’t help it and started crying. we don’t make an abundance of money, this vacation took us a long time to save up for. This year was going to be special because we splurged and booked Shoreline so we could right in town. The staff was friendly and was able to give us accommodations for their other Inn. Sadly this inn was not by the shore and not right in town. Once I calmed down emotionally and got settled in at Aspen Inn, I checked my Expedia account. My reservation was NEVER cancelled! I had a confirmation number and everything, with an email asking how check in was!!!! I know the last minute accommodation the staff was able to find for me was an okay deal for the size of the room (family suite), but the whole reason we booked Shoreline was because it was right in town and shoreside view. The location was what was important to us, not the room size. Shoreline needs to update their systems or something because going from being extremely excited to a complete crying mess was not a highlight of our vacation. And to blame it on Expedia when it wasn’t Expedia that cancelled!?!:(

I had a wonderful experience at the Shoreline Inn! The location in downtown Grand Marais right on the water was lovely and convenient to shops, restaurants, and a bookstore! Staff members Monica and Carmen were so helpful. I look forward to staying here again in the future! Thank you.

We could not get the TV to work after lots of help from the staff. They were very apologetic and comped us an extra night to make it right. It’s a cool, old-school place that is trying to uphold a long tradition in Grand Marais. I will go back there again!

The staff was awful. We had to wait to check in because she was lounging watching a movie on her phone. Then when we had a request for an extra pillow, she gave a face to us like what do you want and was rude about it saying they don't have extra pillows. When I went downstairs to get help with our tv which was frozen she also gave me a look like what do you want so I asked her if there was a particular problem and she said no. I asked again about an extra pillow and she said she can't because they had to be washed and there were 3 properties using the laundry facilities. I've never been treated so rudely by hotel staff in my life. I will not be staying again.

It was right on the shore of Lake Superior.

Parking was safe, room was very clean and roomy, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is located near all the shops and lake. We were able to walk to all.

Friendly staff, decent prices especially for the area and time of year. No good protein choices for breakfast - challenging for a diabetic (but im mostly prepared for that). Enjoyed the back patio and views. We will keep this hotel in mind for future trips.

One of the things I loved was the fact there was a continental breakfast at the hotel. However, after the weekend, the food supply depleted and was not replenished we stayed four nights five days I was disappointed in that.

The breakfast was excellent for continental. Property has huge deferred maintenance. There were dirty tissues and other debris under the bed and the ceiling light didn’t work. The location is excellent. Parking on site.

Nice little no frills hotel. Room was cleanish, breakfast was a 24/7 pantry stocked with breakfast bars, bread, bagels, hard boiled eggs, pre made waffles that could be put in a toaster or microwave. There was Keurig and bunn coffee maker with hot water for tea and hot chocolate. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Great price for exactly what it is: an older but clean hotel. Staff is nice, room is a good size, and they have a good selection of snacks / food in the breakfast bar that can be accessed any time. Great place for anyone looking for an ideal location and basic stay

This hotel is a mixed bag. The good: really great breakfast selection. Not a hot breakfast, but something for everyone, which was much appreciated. It's on the water, a big positive. I asked for and was given a lake view room and the Lake Superior view did not disappoint. Friendly and helpful employees, a big plus! It's very convenient to the downtown area of Grand Marais. The bed was comfortable. The not-so-good: this is a tired, old hotel in need of refurbishing. Many small maintenance-type issues, such as a shower drain that does not stay in the open position, peeling wallpaper, non-functioning hair dryer, and that sort of thing. No extra pillows or blankets, a refrigerator in which the freezer compartment was not functional due to being completely iced up. No elevator. Worn out bathroom fixtures, etc. It's not for people that are picky about age and condition; that's for sure. But for me, I rated the hotel "good" simply because of the location on the lake and the helpful, friendly staff. I had a good experience here and it served my purpose, which was to spend most of my time out enjoying Grand Marais.
