The room was very comfortable, the cleaniness of the pool, unique gift shop, friendly staff Enjoyed the use of the picnic pavilion & even received a copy of a patern to make unique campfire chairs as a project as we returned home. Thank you for an enjoyable stay.

Our 2nd of many future stays! It's our "home" away from home! The outdoor kitchens we have yet to use & there's two for family & friend gatherings. Air/wayer hoses, corn hole, horse shoe, ice machine, fish cleaning station, laundry onsite, pool, toys and bikes, clothes line, firepits, entertainment area for Sat (seasonal) night boogy. Rooms are renovated, some with walk in showers. Gift shop & Art Gallery on site. Doggie stations w/poop bags, dog play area (fenced), kayack use with life vests. This is the Sweet Spot of Buxton! The staff is AMAZING! I'd give 10 stars if I could! Ready to Beach Bum it out in Buxton then go have one hell of a swell time at the Swell Motel!!!

Swell motel was nice. One of the two room's air conditioner units would sometimes shut off throughout our stay. It was able to be turned back after resetting the small breaker. Our second room had some small bugs here and there. The staff was friendly and location was good. Bikes were a bit rusty and many had flat tires. Great eateries in the area and quick walk to the beach. Nice motel for the area though.

A great little place for a quick stay! The rooms are CLEAN and have been remodeled very nicely! The pool was also very clean and we loved the Swell Art Gallery on site and cute little gift shop. They had live music and 2 fire pits if you byo wood- something that we did which turned into a fun night meeting other guests. The staff were friendly as was Squeakers the cat. Cant beat this place for the value! We had a perfect little getaway here.

Love the swell! This was my second visit & I will always check availability & pricing when I go to southern OBX. Buxton is convenient to everything down there imo, & swell is in the middle of it all. You can walk to everything you need & several off road ramps within 5 min. The outdoor kitchen & kayaks available for the sound are also a great amenity. I’ll be back!

TL; DR: Quiet rooms, friendly but not intrusive people, affordable, very pet-friendly, would be great for fishermen and women. Will be back! The Swell is a classic motor lodge with friendly staff and helpful amenities for folks planning to stay for a while. There are fish cleaning stations, a grassy and shaded picnic area, two (!!) big gas grills, cornhole boards and bikes to borrow. The room was surprisingly quiet at night given how many people were around! Only drawback (to me) is that the bathroom could have used a bit of a refresh as the tub was dingy, but it seemed clean enough. We were just there for a couple of days so didn’t use all of the amenities, but we appreciated the central location for using the Ocracoke ferry and visiting my favorite beach ramps. I also liked talking with the friendly staff and people who come every year — I didn’t grow up going to the Outer Banks so it’s fun to be able to learn about the place from people who did!

This was our family’s second time staying at the Swell Motel. They had just started renovating the rooms and pool when we stayed the first time, so we were super excited to see the results on our second stay. We were blown away by the renovations! So much nicer than we expected. The rooms are spacious and EXTREMELY CLEAN. The beach decor is charming. The bathroom was fully remodeled and much nicer than many hotels that I’ve stayed at. There was a microwave and fridge in the room - both worked great. The air conditioning kicked butt!! We were so grateful for that. Nice sized television with Netflix, too. The staff at the Swell Motel were very nice. I felt like they cared about our stay and would have helped with anything we needed. We did not use the pool, but it was cute and looked clean. Location is great. Walking distance to a very nice seafood restaurant (with seafood, sushi, and things that non-fish eaters could eat), a pizza place, ice cream shop and mini golf. There are plenty of other eating options and shopping within a 10-15 minute drive. Hatteras Lighthouse is a 5 minute drive. There are many close by public access beach entries. We loved staying here so much. We will absolutely be back again!

I liked that it was within walking distance from a couple restaurants and shops! The rooms were okay. My room looked newly renovated but my mom’s room was really outdated and had a weird smell. I was also charged a different price than what I was quoted on here. The pool was amazing very clean and well taken care of! But other than that the atmosphere was really welcoming and they had a live band playing on Saturday night and people cooking on the provided grills! Would stay again after renovations are completely finished!

This motel is definitely suited for people visiting for outdoor recreation, fishing and the beach. The room was very clean and quiet. Only drawbacks were that the air conditioning was in the face all night of anyone in the bed nearest the unit, and the beds weren't the most comfortable we've used.

This motel is just outstanding. The retro vibe and laid back feeling is wonderful. The inn keeper is attentive to guests and the on site staff happy and kind. You rarely find a 50 plus year old property that is modern , spacious, pet accommodating and priced so moderately. You can walk to the historical light house which is #1 National Park in the Outer Banks. The rooms have all been remodeled and offer tons of counter space- modern showers- all tiles and spotless housekeeping. The beds comfortable and views out the back window of a sand dune just added to the surprise of this motel. The Swell needs to be recognized for its uniqueness- cleanliness and location. 10-10!

Overall the stay was okay. The bathroom was very old and run down, there was mold in the tub and a portion of the floor was sunken in due to rot. I think if the bathroom were in better condition the stay would have been a lot better.

I made reservations for four adults, three kids and one infant. When we arrived, after a seven hour drive, we get our room and it’s a room with a queen size bed and a full size bed. So we ask the lady at the front desk how this room sleeps 8 people and she said I don’t know I didn’t make the reservation. My husband had to speak to the owner about our situation and she finally suggested rolling 2 cots into our room which then left us packed in like sardines. There’s no way that was safe under the fire code. The next day we are loading up to go get some lunch and my oldest daughter steps off the porch and into a crack in the parking lot and scrapes her shin and breaks her foot. Their parking lot has huge cracks all over it which they instantly started acting like they were going to have fixed now that someone got hurt. Needless to say this will not be a place we stay at again or recommend for anyone else.
I made reservations for four adults, three kids and one infant. When we arrived, after a seven hour drive, we get our room and it’s a room with a queen size bed and a full size bed. So we ask the lady at the front desk how this room sleeps 8 people and she said I don’t know I didn’t make the reservation. My husband had to speak to the owner about our situation and she finally suggested rolling 2 cots into our room which then left us packed in like sardines. There’s no way that was safe under the fire code. The next day we are loading up to go get some lunch and my oldest daughter steps off the porch and into a crack in the parking lot and scrapes her shin and breaks her foot. We were initially given a key to an uncleared room. Apologies were given and a very clean room provided. Nice little beachy motel. The location is fantastic. Would recommend that weather stripping be installed around door to keep out bugs and light. (Room 109)

Staff were great and attentive, and the rooms were really nice, especially for a renovated old motel! We only stayed here for two nights on our way south to Ocracoke with more family, but would absolutely stay longer. Great vibe with the live music Friday and Saturday. We’ll probably be back next year!

We enjoyed staying over at the Swell motel this past weekend. It is very clean. The folks are very friendly. The air conditioner was loud, but we didn’t need it because we just opened the windows. It is just across from the Cape Hatteras lighthouse entrance, which made a nice morning walk I would stay here again.

This motel is just outstanding. The retro vibe and laid back feeling is wonderful. The inn keeper is attentive to guests and the on site staff happy and kind. You rarely find a 50 plus year old property that is modern , spacious, pet accommodating and priced so moderately. You can walk to the historical light house which is #1 National Park in the Outer Banks. The rooms have all been remodeled and offer tons of counter space- modern showers- all tiles and spotless housekeeping. The beds comfortable and views out the back window of a sand dune just added to the surprise of this motel. The Swell needs to be recognized for its uniqueness- cleanliness and location. 10-10!

Love the swell! This was my second visit & I will always check availability & pricing when I go to southern OBX. Buxton is convenient to everything down there imo, & swell is in the middle of it all. You can walk to everything you need & several off road ramps within 5 min. The outdoor kitchen & kayaks available for the sound are also a great amenity. I’ll be back!

Swell Motel was amazing ! We had a newly remodeled room, Room had a bar ledge , refrigerator, Big TV . Great comforts of home Staff was outstanding . Had live entertainment and food for guest , horse shoe pits, corn hole , fire pit , nice pool . was within walking distance for shopping , Diamond Sholes across the street for Breakfast also fantastic . Already looking forward to next year to book .

A great little place for a quick stay! The rooms are CLEAN and have been remodeled very nicely! The pool was also very clean and we loved the Swell Art Gallery on site and cute little gift shop. They had live music and 2 fire pits if you byo wood- something that we did which turned into a fun night meeting other guests. The staff were friendly as was Squeakers the cat. Cant beat this place for the value! We had a perfect little getaway here.

It has a couple bars, restaurants, shops within walking distance. Has a nice outdoor area with bbq grills, firepits, swimming pool. Walk to the back of the property to watch the sunset over the inlet. Most of the rooms have been remodeled, or are in the process of being remodeled. Would definitely stay here again

This was our family’s second time staying at the Swell Motel. They had just started renovating the rooms and pool when we stayed the first time, so we were super excited to see the results on our second stay. We were blown away by the renovations! So much nicer than we expected. The rooms are spacious and EXTREMELY CLEAN. The beach decor is charming. The bathroom was fully remodeled and much nicer than many hotels that I’ve stayed at. There was a microwave and fridge in the room - both worked great. The air conditioning kicked butt!! We were so grateful for that. Nice sized television with Netflix, too. The staff at the Swell Motel were very nice. I felt like they cared about our stay and would have helped with anything we needed. We did not use the pool, but it was cute and looked clean. Location is great. Walking distance to a very nice seafood restaurant (with seafood, sushi, and things that non-fish eaters could eat), a pizza place, ice cream shop and mini golf. There are plenty of other eating options and shopping within a 10-15 minute drive. Hatteras Lighthouse is a 5 minute drive. There are many close by public access beach entries. We loved staying here so much. We will absolutely be back again!
