Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel

The property is lovely. It’s situated about a 10 minute walk up hill from town. For my 13 year old son and I, this was a great distance to get a little walk in after a meal in town and just strenuous enough. I wouldn’t recommend it for elderly people or small children necessarily. My son enjoyed the pool (it was 8 feet at the deep end and he was excited he could dive) and the view from the pool area, which was spectacular. You can see all of Catalina from there. We stayed in the historic building, and loved the charm of it. Our deluxe room was plenty large for both of us, and the view of the mountains was pretty. I heard the woman at the front desk say they were all booked up, but it must have few enough rooms that it was as still quiet. We really enjoyed being able to come back to such a quiet, peaceful, nicely designed and decorated hotel. I’m so glad I paid a little more for this experience, and am happy to have not stayed in the bustle of the other hotels right in the busy tourist section of Avalon.

Beautiful property with amazing views of Catalina. Staff was great, shuttle rides to and from town were readily available and helpful especially getting back up the hill. Breakfast was quite delicious and convenient as it is included in the room cost. Only complaint is lack of bar or any way to get a drink (blessing in disguise I suppose). Highly recommend!

Staff was great, the room view is the best on the island. Wildlife comes up to the front door if you’re into that thing as well. The 5th floor pool was also a nice touch along with the lounge area. Your stay also includes breakfast. Two things you don’t get at the hotel though… a hot shower ( water is cold to lukewarm most of the time ) and a thorough cleaning with housekeeping. Not a huge deal but if you’re a clean freak, some of the minor details are missing. Overall, good stay and I would consider staying here again.

We did not have hot water in the showers. They moved us to another room, but still the shower was lukewarm or cold. When we opened the pull out sofa bed, there was some kind of yellow/brown stain in the bedding all the way to the mattress. Are the rooms being cleaned and sanitized properly between guests. The pool wasn't heated, it was freezing, so we couldn't swim, which was a bummer.

The views from the Zane Grey are unbelievable. Having a pool and fire pits are also special. The corner room is spacious and very nice.

Hot water didn’t work. Bathtub plug didn’t work, no bell service and had to lug luggage up two flights. Pool was unheated.

Unlike some reviewers we had plenty of very hot water. Pool is fabulous, breakfast a wonderful plus, I will be back!

The ice machine did not work. Had to ask and go get every time I wanted ice. Disappointed we couldn’t enjoy breakfast on our balcony. Due to do not remove dishes rule. Saying that they a restaurant is very misleading. The continental breakfast was pretty good. But could offer lower fat milk options The view was great. The room was fabulous. The fire pit did not work. We booked the honeymoon sweet for our tenth anniversary. The service was not what we expected. No offer of concierge service for our luggage.

The pool had a light floating in it and the room ac kept clicking all night. No elevators to higher floors. View was nice but save your money and stay in town. This place is a dump.

Absolutely adorable hotel. Feels boutique and so unique. Amazing views of the town since it’s on a hill. Loved the continental breakfast. Seriously ask for the pancakes, soooo good!!! Room was super cute. Staff was lovely. Only thing at the time I was there was that the single elevator there was broken so you had to call the front desk every time you wanted to go anywhere since the stairs aren’t fixed yet. But all that is fixable and I’ll definitely go back!!!

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel. Everything was spotlessly clean, and the staff were very polite and always ready to help with anything I needed. The chef was incredibly kind, and his breakfasts were absolutely amazing. What impressed me the most was the location waking up to breathtaking views of both the mountains and the ocean made the experience unforgettable. I would definitely recommend this hotel and look forward to coming back!

Sadly once again Zane Grey was another disappointment ! We have stayed there 4 times and the same issues of no hot water , water being turned off , toilet seat broken n repaired with duct tape ( I have pictures) all latches to close windows are broken , on one of the coldest n very windy night the window latch was broken so the window continually slammed into the window sill ! It was so bad and freezing cold and very noisy , I had to complain at front desk fearing the window would break and glass would be in our room , maintenance duct taped the window closed , this is a high end hotel and it was a motel 6 stay at high end prices and no partial refund of any kind . Be warned if you stay there you could have no hotter or water , ants keeping you company , foul tasting tap water when brushing teeth , dangerous hanging wires from TV , a so so free breakfast that had the same items as the day before , not fresh , ! Yes the view is great , yes the front desk , Crystal was a doll , Carl and Enrique the drivers were great, but sadly this is a historical hotel . Zane Grey would be ashamed of the lack of maintenance and numerous issues that are ongoing . I would expect this at a less priced hotel , but 600 a night or more this is indeed very sad . It is shameful that the owners do not care enough to keep this historical property in the best of what is expected for this kind of money. Also we tip generously to the cart drivers , the front desk who are also the maid. Do not stay here !!

Great spot for a quiet getaway in Avalon. Up a hill, so prepare to walk or have tips ready for the shuttle cart. Bed was adequate, room sheets and towels clean. And the robes were comfy. Floor was a little corner dusty. I would stay here again.

The view from the hotel was stunning. I liked how there was a pool and complimentary transportation. My initial reaction to the room was that it was quiet small but smelled/seemed clean. However, at the end of the night as I was ready to climb into bed. I pulled the bed covers and found several pieces of hair on two different pillows. I also found a small wrapper on the bed sheets. This was quite disappointing considering how much we paid and it was gross finding several hair on the pillows.

Likes: Hotel room had a stunning view and was walkable to town Dislikes: We had to call to confirm that a driver was coming to pick us up at ferry stop (Waited for 15 minutes before calling and had previously provided our arrival time via email and text), room was dirty, and room wasn't cleaned one day.

The property has stunning views of Catalina. The staff is helpful, kind and attentive. We had a great time chatting with the cart service which give fast pick up and drop off to downtown. Like other reviewers have said the facilities have some quirks. The handle to open one of our windows were broken but we managed to open them with another handle from a different room. For the price of the room, cleanliness, views and staff we would definitely return.

Everything was great except you can hear everything from others rooms. We had a neighbor that was snoring all night so loud that we could not fall asleep. Luckily they were gone the next day and we finally got some rest

The bedroom was too noisy. I stayed there for two nights, and every day I couldn't get enough rest because I could hear my neighbors both at night and early in the morning. I don’t recommend it if you want a peaceful place to relax.

Great views and the breakfast was an excellent touch. Only drawback was they couldn’t get the tv to work in my room.

We had a great stay at Zane grey. We stayed in room 105 and it was spacious, clean, and well equipped with bathroom amenities and coffee and tea and a mini fridge. All staff was super nice and helpful. Complementary breakfast was a plus. They even picked us up from the ferry and brought our bags to meet us at the ferry when we were ready to leave.

It was really nice staying at Zane Grey Hotel during our stay on Catalina Island! I guess the only thing that would’ve made it a 5 star was getting a room with a better view for our honeymoon.

Great views, easy and free golf cart service up and down the hill, some rooms are amazing. Giving 4 stars because one of the lower end rooms felt like an oversized closet. Luckily the staff was able to move us to a better room (for a fee).

Updated room was big and clean, mattress comfortable, sofa bed not so much- you can feel the springs. Front desk staff polite and helpful, check in was quick. No microwave in the room but one was available in the common area. Spectacular views, golf cart transportation to and from town was quick and easy. We would stay there again

Made a decision to splurge on an ocean view room at the Zane Grey and boy was it worth every penny! Absolutely incredible views and extremely clean, quiet and comfortable. The staff went above and beyond and we used the golf cart shuttle multiple times for rides to/from the ferry and downtown area... also enjoyed the walk via the waterfront stairs which are the most scenic you'll experience but does require a short walk on the road toward the top of the hill (access is from Hill Street). Our only complaint is that we didn't stay longer!

Hotel was nice with great views! They had a golf cart service to bring you in and out of town, which was awesome Our window covering was broken and no hot water for two days. The pool also had towels and all the chairs that were not cleaned in the evening. Overall nice hotel and they were quick to fix it. But not kept up well for the price We asked for a check out 30 minutes later and the girl told us that we have to pay for another half day of the room

Front desk - Sarah was extremely rude, and immature. She must not be aware that she works in hospitality. We paid for a room in advance and was told that my 2 minors ages 3 and 11 needed to leave the room, that we need to find another hotel since our party was too large (5 total). The entire island was sold out for the night. Sarah's reply was that is not my problem. I was shocked. She was seriously trying to get my 2 kids out of the room and forced us to stay in the lobby and at midnightkivked us off the propertyto sit on the ground in feont of hotel. For 4 hours, we were going back and forth. Sherrifs finally came and said we were able to stay the night as a family in our room. Tjis was titally unnecessary. We paid $444 a night and this was by far the worse experience i have ever had. I do not recommended staying here. Sarah was either having a bad night or hates working but its unfortunate that we were the victims. First time on the island and it was an awful experience to encounter

Had penthouse. Staff was rude. Housekeeping got missed and when brought up with staff they were dismissive and said the crew left already. No concern. Transportation up and down the steep hill to town was unreliable, some drivers had attitude while other drivers were great. At times other guests were allowed to have priority drivers when we had already been waiting. Not worth it to stay there. If spending a lot on a penthouse look elsewhere on Avalon first.

Great stay! The room was amazing and clean. The staff was awesome. The shuttle service they offer is extremely convenient. Will stay again if we return to Catalina.

1- They called us the day before for air arrival confirmation, they said they were gonna pick us up from express line and when we got there they never showed up even after we called them. Had no choice but to walk. 2- The advertisement was smoke free hotel but when we got there our hallway to the room and everywhere smelt like pot and some 3- falls advertisement , all the pictures you see does not exist 4- poor breakfast area and no one was present. We also heard that the only customer that was there didn’t have hot water the night before. 5- our room door was broken and wouldn’t lock all night. The staff was horrible except one person and they were okay. 6- they said they were gonna send our luggage to the express line at 3:15 and we called 3 times and our luggage wasn’t there until 3:45pm and our ship was leaving at 3:50. We didn’t get a sorry and definitely won’t be staying there again! Not recommended to anyone.

The staff goes above and beyond. Love this place and although it was our first time in Catalina, we will always go back to stay at Zane Grey! Great views! Comfortable beds! Easy access to town via short walk or they provide a golf cart service.

The property itself is charming. Great hillside location and a sweet room with a beautiful view. Communication was wonderful prior to the stay, so no complaints there, but the tone changed on checkout with a very brusque, almost rude reminder to be downstairs to check out even though we were only ten minutes late. Then there was some confusion around picking up our bags at the ferry terminal. We weren't told where the driver would be, so we waited at the original pick up point while he was in the nearby parking lot. when I texted to find out where he was, I got a gruff response that he'd been waiting for 20 minutes...even though we couldn't possibly have known that. I was left feeling that the high turnover of guests/visitors to the island meant a dip in service was acceptable. What would've been a great stay in a hotel that I'd definitely return to--and recommend--as a SoCal resident became a sightly underwhelming experience.

This is a lovely hotel way up in the hills (actually only 1/4 mile) overlooking Catalina. The room was great and overlooked the water, the staff is very friendly too and picked us up at the ferry and brought our luggage to us at the ferry on the way home. I didn’t know Catalina at all and I’m glad we choose this hotel instead of one of the ones on the Main Street. It’s still super walkable but it was nice to be a little way away. I will definitely stay here again.

My girlfriend and I spent the weekend at the Zane Grey in Avalon. We very much enjoyed our trip. The 18 room hotel has STUNNING views of Avalon. They have a very accommodating golf cart shuttle service although the walk to and from town really isn't bad. Overall, would recommend!

Front desk and king room were good and on par with other hotels in Catalina. However, in a 3 1/2 day stay, no significant housekeeping except empty trash. We had to call for towels each day and no linen changes. Walls are a bit thin. Hotel is far up the hill so not an easy walk to downtown. Golf cart service to Main Street pretty good. 2/5 breakfast option each morning.

We would usually walk to town and ride the golf cart shuttle back up to the hotel. A little noisy with children running back and forth in the unit above us for several hours at night and morning. Good breakfast buffet, especially on weekends with omelet bar and French toast. Great historical property and former home of Zane Grey. Would definitely return!

Staff were lovely and the view is outstanding but the amenities were lacking not what we thought we were booking. It said on website heated pool, then restaurant on site if you don't want to go to town. The restaurant was open until 11am. For those that smoke, (Smoking is not allowed on designated decks which it also stated on website that there were designated decks.) Then when we turned the heater on outside it went out of gas. It was after we called and were told there was nothing they could do that I suggested to change the tank from one of the outside deck heaters. My husband changed it out. It would be nice if there were some glasses in the room. For the level of hotel and for what is charged amenities need a lot of work. When my sister booked they were not told they would need to walk up 3 flights of stairs. The room did have a magnificent view but they should have been told prior. Breakfast could do with some inspiration, hard scrambled eggs, stale muffins. Such a gorgeous place but you are paying for a view, nothing else. Such a shame if these other details were met they would knock it out of the ballpark!

We stayed in the corner view ocean room in early August. Pros: Check in was easy and receptionist was very kind. The shuttle seem to run very often which is handy. Beds were comfortable. AC worked well and was not too loud. Cons: Overall impression, you don’t get what you pay for at this hotel. It’s a pretty hefty price tag which implies a certain a level of accommodations and service will be provided. A few of the issues: paper thin walls (our neighbors were partiers), broken couch in our room which had a rod popping out of the middle making it very uncomfortable to sit on, not to mention all the stains on the couch (needs a serious cleaning), pool furniture is either broken or terribly uncomfortable, both mornings of our stay the cook did not show up and the “included” breakfast did not happen before we needed to depart. We won’t be staying here again and are going to try another hotel in Avalon next time.

Beautiful property, wonderful view, cute cozy and clean room with a beautiful view. Great Breakfast in the morning and they will golf cart you into town and pick you up. Also from the boat when you arrive and depart. They were all very kind and hospitable. We loved our little mini vacation.

Outstanding boutique hotel on a hilltop with amazing views of Avalon. Peaceful, serene, very comfy bed & living areas, modern bathroom and lots of natural light. The pool was great and a deep 8 ft you can certainly do laps or relax. Complimentary breakfast: continental & hot buffet: scrambled eggs, crispy bacon and sausage cooked to perfection. Keurig is also in the room. Staff was very friendly & helpful. Great hotel overall & relaxing experience.
