Avenue Hotel

I recently stayed here for two nights, and unfortunately, it was a thoroughly disappointing experience from start to finish. I arrived around 1:00 PM carrying my luggage directly from Central Station. At check-in, I was greeted by a lovely staff member from the Philippines who was genuinely nice. However, the experience was immediately ruined by her young manager standing over her, micro-managing and telling her how to do her job—even though she clearly knew what she was doing. He was simply posturing and playing the "boss." Despite having a room available right then, he insisted on charging an extra €5 fee just to check in before 3:00 PM. His attitude was arrogant, cold, and transactional. There was zero focus on customer service; guests are clearly treated as nothing more than room numbers and credit cards. The property itself is very old and poorly managed: To reach the elevator, you have to walk straight through the middle of the breakfast room. The hallways were messy, with laundry and clutter left around the walls. The staff overall seemed cold, stressed, and completely indifferent. It feels like management operates on the mindset of "we don’t need to be kind or welcoming, because tourists will come anyway." As for the room, it was only average, but it had a major plumbing issue: the water in the shower was dangerously hot, with no way to get cold water to balance it. Like everything in Amsterdam,hotels is expensive, but high prices should come with basic hospitality.

The hotel was okay with good location closed to many tourist attractions. Very friendly staff, but Hlina was the best. She was very helpful, patient with outstanding customer service!!

Comfortable bed. Nice shower. Very nice, pleasant and polite front desk staff. Air con query addressed immediately. Held bags after checkout as our Eurostar return was later in the day. Hotel great position for Centraal Station. Not too long a walk to the canals. Can’t comment on breakfast as chose to venture out to different breakfast options.

This hotel is an absolute nightmare! There is nothing good to say about it. The pictures on the website are completely misleading. The rooms are old, worn-out, and shabby, and clearly in need of renovation. There was even a lot of black mold in the bathroom. The view was horrible — it felt like looking out from a World War II bunker. Their so-called “double rooms,” which we booked, have a 120 cm-wide bed — which is actually a small double bed, not a proper double bed. The staff were rude and unhelpful. We even had to pay extra because we arrived just 30 minutes before the official check-in time, even though our room had already been cleaned and was completely ready for us. It was simply sitting empty! A total scam!! DO NOT STAY HERE!!

I've stayed at the Avenue Hotel more times than I can remember whenever I have to fly out of Schiphol Airport the next morning. It is convenient enough location from Amsterdam Central, competitively priced, and they have a good enough breakfast. And I've stayed in Amsterdam more than 100 times as I used to travel this route for business - so I'm no stranger to small rooms. But this time at Avenue Hotel I didn't get a hotel room - I got a bathroom with a bed in it. The tiny room had a stand up shower, toilet, sink and a bed. As this is a pretty big departure from even an experienced travelers expectation, I feel the nature of this room should have been disclosed to me at the time of booking. Had I known, I would NOT have booked this odd, tiny room and not at the price I paid - which could have gotten me a "normal" room at many other hotels within the same neighborhood. I'm OK with small rooms - but this was pretty crazy and should have been disclosed.
