County Hotel

I stayed only for 1 night and at first the room was okay, average size with a really tiny ensuite but generally clean. However, soon I realised that the thermostat to regulate the heat did not work - I was too hot. I could open the windows a crack but they overlooked the car park and this would be unsafe and compromise my privacy as I was on the ground floor. At night, the place was really noisy. Kept me awake for quite a long time. I stayed in the annexe on the ground floor and the upstairs occupants were constantly moving around. Noise insulation was non existent. When it comes to the ensuite shower room - it was so tight that to sit on the WC was actually not possible without turning myself at an angle of 45 degrees! Another annoying thing was that I was charged 8 pounds to park my car overnight, but as the hotel seemed to have a function all the parking spaces were taken and it took me ages to find a parking spot. All these issues created a very uncomfortable night for me, and I will not be returning or recommending this hotel.

The property and service is to a good standard however I was charged £18 for parking for a 2 night stay as I had booked through Expedia which was not mentioned when booking through Expedia

Very convenient location for the city, able to park the car with no issues and enjoyed a decent, well-priced drink while we waited to check in. Excellent service from the reception would let us check in slightly early at no extra cost. Room was clean, very comfy bed, powerful shower and a well stocked tea/coffee/refreshments selection. Breakfast was outstanding - fab selection of continental options, buffet or hot food to order at your table. We had the eggs royal, which were delicious and French toast. Very impressed overall, especially as such a reasonable rate for the room. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Stayed for one night for a girls weekend away to go to Chelmsford's Music Festival. Hotel was in a great location with parking. We had a spacious room with great amenities & a lovely lunch in the bar! Would definitely stay here again!!

I have stayed here many times. Thus time i was put in what the hotel call the cottages. No they are not cottages. Tgey back onto the main busy road into chelmsford. It was like sleeping on the M25. Worst night sleep ive had in a long time . The hotel now charge £9 to park at tge hotel for patrons and a £20 deposit for the room Key in the Cottage rooms . Check in was rather chaotic but that was because it was Friday night and staff were training . Would never want to stay in the "Cottages" part of hotel located at end of car park which is noisy and backs onto main road again it was awful . Prefer to sty in main part of hotel .

Went for a gig at the Racecourse. Nice central location, easy paid parking. We were in Annexe. Little road noise but overall really happy with the stay. Would stay again.

Great hotel in a great location. Quietly situated within easy walking distance of both the train station and city centre this hotel also offers onsite parking. Would definitely stay here again!!

Good central location, modern facilities in the room including smart TV. Room quiet even though there was a Christmas party downstairs. Would definitely stay there again if I needed to stay in Chelmsford. Close to railway station so I didn't drive but there is car parking available.

Great location within walking distance of train station and city centre. Bar was nice. Breakfast had a big selection of tasty food. Staff very friendly. Parking on site for addee charge. Room was clean and tidy. Nice and quiet so slept well.

We enjoyed a family celebration weekend with the staff being very helpful. The meal was well prepared, hot and tasty served by the restaurant staff efficiently. The room was clean and spotless. We had a great stay, thank you staff of The County Hotel.

I had a really bad experience. I chose this purely on cost but I expected more. The room was new and decorated nice but it was in like terrace house, walls so thin I could hear everything. Certainly not good for a couple if you want to do couple things. The room was hot and they just had a desk fan it’s 2025. I’m 14stone so not big and I couldn’t sit comfortably on the toilet it was so tight and a sink in the way. You had to put the kettle on the floor to plug it in. Felt like a cheap b&b at the seaside which I’m not knocking but this is meant to be a 3 star hotel. I can not recommend this to anyone.

Tiny boiling hot room. £145 for one night including car park. No AC and windows would only open 2 inches. Avoid!

I had high expectations for this hotel based on a colleagues recommendation, but unfortunately, my stay was disappointing. While it may meet the technical criteria for a four-star rating, it did not feel like a four-star experience. My accommodation was in an annex building that, despite a modern appearance, felt unstable and creaky. The noise from the room above was excessive, continuing until 1am, making it difficult to sleep. Additionally, the car park was completely full, leaving me unable to secure a space despite being charged for parking. The room was not well insulated from noise, and located near a busy junction, I was frequently disturbed by sirens and flashing lights. The blinds provided little coverage, and the thin walls and windows did little to block the sound. There were also several basic amenities missing, including a full-length mirror and a remote control for the TV. The shower was exceptionally small, with poor water pressure, and the shower curtain continually stuck to me due to the limited space. That said, the hotel staff were very friendly, and the dining experience was excellent. The quality of the food was outstanding, and it was evident that a great deal of effort had been put into the restaurant. It was a stark contrast to the poor sleeping conditions, almost as if I had stayed at two completely different hotels. Overall, while I appreciated the hospitality and dining, the lack of comfort and and amenities made for an unsatisfactory stay.

Room was very basic. It was hot outside but the radiator in the bathroom was constantly on and the corridor outside was ridiculously hot. There was a fan in the room but not big enough for a room of that size. Not being able to make the room any cooler was extremely uncomfortable

Very nice hotel. Room was spacious and had good amenities. The bathroom was roomy and had a separate bath and a shower. The a/c was really good on a hot day and the bed was comfortable.the breakfast was excellent with a wide range buffet options hot and cold and made to order food also included.

Room was bigger than last time but in dire need of some refurbishment. Loose floor tiles in the bath room, cracked wall tiles and generally poorly sealed / caulked with some flaking paint, roller blind old and dirty with insects trapped in it. Bed hard as nails, pillows not great / no options. 3 radiators only 1 of which you could control so room was hot without windows open but noisy in town. Walls in corridoors and breakfast room were dirty / not maintained well. £9 a night parking unless you book direct is a bit cheeky and in any case the car park was full on Thursday with 3 cars driving round and round waiting when I got there so you pay up front for parking you are not guaranteed!

Excellent reception experience. The young lady was so very helpful and caring. I am 75 and she was so patient. The only downside is £1.90 for soda water. Most pubs charge 0 or a nominal amount. This is a hotel and there was the service of the water but the profit margin must be enormous and I admit to feeling exploited. However room was very nice as was WiFi. I would recommend and stay again

Quaint charming old hotel with modern upgrades to much of the building. The breakfast looked great but did not have. Staff was outstanding, very friendly and helpful.

Great stay for 1 night, staff were an asset to your hotel (particularly Adrian on reception and we think Flowers? house keeper on 1st floor was super helpful.

I haves stayed here regularly over the last 2yrs on business and the staff have made it feel like a second home. Andra and Yulia are brilliant. I tend not to leave reviews but this hotel is so good that I felt the need to let others know. If you are in Chelmsford overnight make this your go to hotel

Booking site says parking on site but doesn't mention that its £7 per night unless you go right into small print. Every other hotel states chargeable parking on site. Check in, i felt as I use my hiking pack instead of a suitcase for a 1 night stay, I was looked at and spoken down too by the male receptionist. This was a shame as i was actually checking out the hotels in area to use for company stays and training days. He even asked if i knew about the on site parking charges, which shows that none regular guests know nothing about it. Room was small. The bathroom dangerous as the shower is 2 steps up from the floor. Steps and floor covered in slippy fake wood vinyl. The shower head was 50% blocked, leaked, and impossible to get a cold shower. It was hot or scolding. The bed was up against the wall on 2 sides, 1 side up against the loudest creaking staircase ive ever heard including my 30 years actually in the Hotel trade. The windows are old 1940s metal framed, single glazed that you couldnt leave open, even on the latch as there is nothing stopping other guests from getting out of there windows and just walk around the flat roof crawl boards and into your room. The only this the room had going for it was the hairdryer, iron, mini board, and room safe. Reception is meant to be 24/7 but checking out at 0730 and waiting 8 minutes at the desk, nobody came. Left through the back door and there was the receptionist, sitting outside drinking coffee. Will NOT use or recommend.

Overall a good trip, all the staff are super friendly and the 2 issues I had with the room were sorted quickly. Bed was comfy and large, lots of space in room so didn't feel cramped in. Bath and shower both worked well. Only 2 negatives really, the sound proofing in the rooms is terrible, even though I was on the opersite side of the hotel to the main road I could hear road noise all the time. Not once in 4 mornings there was my breakfast order correct. One day I got extra items I didn't ask for, the other 3 I got the right items but the wrong quantities. I watched the server write down the correct order on the last 2 days so can only assume the kitchen were rushing and didn't read correctly. Small issue really I know. Overall though a nice stay and would come back

The budget doubles are on a VERY BUSY main road and there's heating control in the rooms. Avoid. The staff are excellent. I chose tp upgrsde to avoid the noisy room but yhe staff were really helpful & professional

The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was top drawer. The lift was unique!!! Its a kong time since I had to press and hold the button for the elevastor to move - loved it!!

Definitely not a 4 star. Restaurant was closed for the evening and already set up for breakfast. Couldn't watch the tiny tv and boil the kettle at the same time! Shower curtain did not stop water escaping. Walls paper thin.

The property was nice - front desk very helpful. Room was stifling hot and no visible way to turn the radiator off in the bathroom. The balcony doors even when locked wobbled and didn’t block out the noise. Breakfast was nice, although they did miss an item off of mine and my friends breakfast but easily remedied. Breakfast was Luke warm. All in all a decent stay for one night.
