Sunday Box Hill Burford Bridge Hotel

The pool was closed and this wasn’t made clear at booking. If you want a pool, book somewhere else. But the hotel was very nice, the bed fantastic and the staff were professional and polite. Easy check in and check out, would stay again but in the summer when the pool is open

Upon arrival, the car park was unlit, despite being charged £10 to park in what was effectively a field. I was then directed to my room and informed that access required a passcode, which in itself was not an issue. However, upon entering the room, the condition was extremely disappointing. The accommodation was visibly run down and poorly maintained, with stained carpets, damaged cupboards, and furniture showing significant wear. The desk had a glass top, beneath which there was a heavy build-up of dust and grime, suggesting it had not been cleaned for a considerable period of time. Overall, the room felt unclean and neglected. Based on the property’s advertised star rating and the overwhelmingly positive reviews, my expectations were significantly higher. Unfortunately, the standard of the room was more in line with a budget, one-star property and did not reflect the price being charged. I chose not to stay and immediately booked alternative accommodation elsewhere — something I very rarely do. Sadly, this stay fell well short of what was promised and was a genuine disappointment.

Hard leave reference to be honest, service was excellent, no complaints or on the room. I do take exception to car parking charges!! £10 for one night in middle no where as such. To be standing in queue be told got pay parking as i booked via Hotels.com yet person behind got it free as they booked directly with hotel. Frustrating and not fair..need be clearer on advert pay to park.

Stunning hotel, not much near it. Why shut the pool at 630pm though?

I booked this hotel solely for the pool, as this site says the pool is open from April onwards. Upon arrival we were told the pool is actually only open from July onwards, and had I known this I would have booked a different hotel. The hotel otherwise was very nice, rooms were clean and it is in an excellent location for hiking. However the hotel is located on a busy roundabout which a lot of motorcyclists use so it was very noisy and we were woken from 6am onwards due to loud motorbikes/traffic. This can’t be controlled of course but I’d recommend a non-road facing room for any light sleepers. The breakfast was fantastic and the grounds are beautiful, staff were helpful and nice, especially the breakfast staff. Had the pool been open as listed on this site and if we had a garden facing room this would have been a perfect stay.

Lovely old hotel in great condition and great facilities including a large outside heated swimming pool

Lovely location, right at the foot of Box Hill giving easy access to beautiful countryside walks and views. Parking was easy enough, you simply find a spot in the car park across the road then enter your car reg details on a tablet in the hotel lobby. Check-in was easy, if not rather impersonal (all done with access codes that are sent to you by email). Nice room, good shower, comfy bed. Room was clean and comfortable, but in need of a few small bits of maintenance - the bathroom sink took ages to drain, and one of the curtain runners was sagging, which made closing the curtains a little difficult. Other than that, we were very happy with the room. The biggest downside for us was that, while we did not book in for the breakfast, we had expected to at least be able to get a decent coffee in the morning…but for some reason the bar and restaurant were both closed. It seemed the hotel runs on minimal staff. There is, however, a cafe a short walk up the road. Another thing worth mentioning is that having booked the hotel on the basis that checkout was 11am, we later received communications stating that checkout was 10am. This was an error - we confirmed with the hotel that checkout is 11am. Phew! Overall, we felt the hotel was good value for money and we would stay here again.

Hospital and welcoming environment. Nicely arranged good decor and great to have the bar facilities. Breakfast was great, lots of choices One issue is the car park. We suffered damage to our car as there are large holes/puddles that are deep and no warning or cones over them

My stay at the Mercure Box Hill hotel was pleasant in every regard with one exception. There was no lift (elevator). It had not occurred to me before booking that a hotel rated with 4 stars could lack such a vital amenity. It should be stated up front on the list of property amenities.

Great pool.

The reception and bar/restaurant area of the hotel are really nice and exactly what you would expect from a hotel at this price point. The rooms unfortunately are not, in my room the bathroom ceiling was covered in mould the paint was peeling from the walls and the carpets were disgusting. It definitely needs a face lift.

Great place and location. We only used the hotel as a place to sleep for a few hours before catching an early flight at Gatwick, but it was a perfect for us. The room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable.

Damp smell. Carpets were badly stained. Mould and dirty grout round bath. Badly stained wash basin. Missing handle on wardrobe door. Asked to change rooms and 2 others I was shown were the same. Checked out after 1 night.

This is a lovely and peaceful hotel - the room was cleaned to a high standard, the food was really tasty, with a good menu and well presented food. I especially enjoyed the sea bass and there was a huge selection for breakfast. The staff are very polite and obliging - nothing is too much trouble. The grounds will look lovely in summer, but even in the winter they are still nice. I really recommend a stay here.

Needed somewhere easy for a quick stopover. Very easy, room was clean, very quiet (and I am definitely one to notice noise), and the whole place had a lovely feel

The staff, service and hotel are great . However the black mould on the grout in my bathroom was terrible it was everywhere and I was disappointed when I brushed a face cloth over some and it came off easily. This suggests that the bathroom and tiles just had not been cleaned thoroughly which is not really acceptable. Such a shame for what could have been an otherwise excellent stay.

Beautiful hotel in many ways. Location and surroundings are stunning. Staff great. The dinner was excellent. Best prawns I’ve had! Would love to have tried out the pool on a summer’s day. Breakfast was middling. Everything was a bit stale in the buffet, though the staff did cook us poached eggs on request. Room itself very tired. Cracked plaster and paint, limescale, old fittings. Some cleaning issues, bit of woodlouse problem. Also saw a small cockroach on my final day which was a bit alarming!

A nice place that needs a bit of TLC. The corridor smelt of damp really strongly and you could see some sections looked tired. The lounge area was really nice and parking is easy

Room 117 is in need of a deep clean. Mouldy bathroom and dirty cushions on the bed. Food was ok and the service in the restaurant and bar were excellent. Stay in hotels on average around 15 nights a month.

Rooms were not clean enough. They had cobwebs and dirty glasses to drink from. The smell of smoking and toilet made it pretty unbearable to stay for the first night. We requested a clean up the next morning, and febreeze was sprayed and rest of left as it was for the next night. Very disappointed and although this is a convenient location, won’t be returning 😭

Friendly staff at check-in, great rooms only let down by zero WiFi signal. Hotel and car park not best suited for disabled people - lots of stair, no assigned spaces in car park - needs addressing

Advertised air conditioned room, but non functioning AC was available. Had to sleep with a fan and window open which wasn't ideal with lots of motorbikes going past.

Hotel was awesome, but we had a hot day and aircon was broke on my floor. Ai was more than useless.

With outside temp in low 30s, the air con was most welcome. Lovely garden area and a decent bar and restaurant.

The entryway and main building is lovely. However our room was in a secondary part of the building, was very tired looking and felt more like a residential care home than a hotel. Disappointed as what we paid didn’t reflect what we got.

Room was large and bed very comfortable. Lots of corridors to navigate to the room...mind old and beautiful building. Shower was pretty poor though as took ages to get the water warm enough. Great place though for hiking around Box Hill.

Hotel was certainly clean, the staff good. However, the extremely officius WhatsApp message compelling me to log in prior to actually checking in was not what I wanted to do after a 200 mile drive!! In the web check-in it requires my nationality. OK fair enough, but searching on a drop down list on a mobile isn't the easiest thing to do on their site, especially when English or British aren't listed. I eventually chose United Kingdom as the closest, but "United Kingdom" isn't a nationality! The rest of the website is useless. We couldn't find a menu, so decided to go out for dinner, checking the restaurant on our way, in case it was OK. It was, and we had a good meal. But with no information in the room or on the useless website they very nearly didn't get our custom. OYO UK, seems very keen on technology, which is extremely badly implemented. The hotel is quite old, and while updated with en-suite rooms and VERY welcome air conditioning, the floor boards creak excessively and sound insulation very poor. Additionally there were various other annoying things, such as there wasn't anywhere to put used teabags! The most basic chain hotels provide things like this.

We were in a room with a conjoining door..you could hear every word from next door..then they tried coming into our room!!..the place needs a good deep clean!! Wouldnt stay here again and parking is £10!!!

Hotel was easy to find with parking directly opposite hotel. Staff friendly. Didnt eat at hotel so cant comment of food. Bar not great,several drinks out of stock. Hotel warm and air condition in room stopped working. Despite telling reception not sorted and no feedback given

Rooms were tired. I stayed on a Sunday night for work purposes and there was a party with loud music which I could hear from my room until 11.00 pm.

Arrived late at night and the person checking us in was extremely unenthusiastic (we'd had a 6 hour drive so would've been nice to feel welcomed). We weren't told about usual things such as wifi, breakfast, parking. Later found the pool was closed which was the main reason we booked it. Room had a double bed and a sofa bed.. sofa bed was made even though we only had 2 people staying and new this so would've been better to have it as a sofa and more space. Rooms are quite spacious, nice shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Was a good location for the wedding we went to at ridge farm, was close drive to the down and the vineyard.

Excellent stay at the Burford Bridge Hotel! The hotel is older - my room was clean, comfortable, and very quiet. The bus stop just steps from the door took me to downtown Dorking for great food and a concert. Karima went above and beyond to help me with transportation, wi-fi, and made my experience top-notch. I will definitely stay here again on a future trip to Dorking.

This was one of the worst hotels i have stayed in for some time. We regularly book hotels for travel/work purposes. The service was shocking. We ordered food from the restaurant and it took over half an hour to receive starters.. we ordered drinks with our food and they didnt arrive atall..we then went to the bar after paying our food and drink in the restaurant, to ask where our drinks were that we ordered with dinner.. and the bar had not even received the order. We then asked for our drinks and still had to wait 15 minutes before we received them.. As there were only 2 staff between the restaurant and bar. Very understaffed and very poor service. We then woke in the morning to go to work.. and was unable to shower or wash as there was no hot water. Cleaniless was fair ish.. but facilities very poor. Never stay at this hotel again!

We stayed for two nights and were impressed by the staff's attention to detail. We had an evening meal which was perfectly cooked, delicious and good value. The breakfasts were generous, plenty of fresh fruit and a help-yourself cooked breakfast with freshly cooked eggs to order. The manager, Stephen, was very helpful in providing information. The hotel is well situated for walking in the Surrey Hills.

I had a mediocre stay at this hotel, but I encountered a significant issue with their new keypad door system, which seemed to malfunction throughout the night. I was jolted awake multiple times by the abrupt and loud alarm, making it difficult to rest. When I brought this up to the reception, they acknowledged the problem but mentioned there was nothing they could do. Unfortunately, this experience overshadowed my visit, and I wouldn't choose to return.

Disappointing response from reception to a couple of problems. 1. Went to reception to ask if they had any spare tv remote controls as the one in our room was faulty. A shrug from the receptionist and a simple “No” was all I got. After trying to reset it and putting new batteries in, I went back and asked if I could get one from an unoccupied room. This caused her to give a big sigh and was obviously an inconvenience, though it did produce a positive result. 2. Reported on Sunday evening that there was a problem with the toilet flush in our room, in that not even paper was not being flushed away. I was told that there was no one from maintenance on site, so the only solution was a room move. As it was late, we decided that we would manage without overnight as they could look into the problem in the morning. When we were going out on Monday morning, I reminded reception that we had the flush problem and said we would be out all day. Upon our return late on Monday we discovered that the flush was still not working properly, but as we had only 1 night left we didn’t bother trying to get it sorted then. We also had a problem with the hot water going off in our block but we were able to use the shower in another room, which was helpful but not ideal. The water was reinstated the same day. We have stayed here plenty of times before and will do again as it is convenient for us. So this experience hasn’t put us off but was a let down on our previous visits.

Staff absolutely lovely, could not have been made more welcome

Me and my partner stay here on a regular basis . All the staff are friendly and really welcoming. Front of desk staff steve was very attentive to our needs . Pet friendly always a must . The rooms are warm and cosy .

Hotel in lovely. easy check in, friendly & attentive staff, couldn’t fault anyone. special mention to Mary (Deputy Mgr) who leads by example. nothing was too much trouble. hotel grounds are amazing, great walks/hikes around local area. We've stayed a few times, and dinned in restaurant too, food is nice, only slight niggle is menu is not that big, and as i can’t eat dairy, main options are limited, to choice of 2 mains, so after 4 nights dining, gets a bit sammy, soo we’ll likely find at local pub next time too gor a bit of variety.

Wonderful hotel! Convenient to trains, Box Hill area. Great restaurant and lounge on site.

We had a 1 night stay as we were attending a wedding at nearby Denbies Vineyard. The location was excellent and we managed a dip in the pool. We had drinks and burgers at the bar which were reasonably priced and the room was comfortable and a good size. The hotel is a bit dated in places but I would recommend it.

We have stayed in the Mercure Burford Bridge on a number of occasions and this latest stay did not disappoint. A friendly comfortable hotel with a great lawned garden and outdoor swimming pool, perfect for warm sunny summer days. A great location for exploring the Surrey Hills with many attractions nearby, including Polesden Lacey.

Room was large and bed very comfortable. Lots of corridors to navigate to the room...mind old and beautiful building. Shower was pretty poor though as took ages to get the water warm enough. Great place though for hiking around Box Hill.

Good location near to box hill and Debbie’s Vineyard

Pretty basic to be honest. Paid nearly £100 for the room, no breakfast. Slow check in. Pretty rubbish room service, you can order food to room but have to go to bar to order which I didn’t do cos what’s the point in that. Food menu overpriced. Air con not working properly in room - in peak summer. I was excited to stay here but left a bit disappointed to be honest. The pool is nice though.

An amazing stay. Used the pool all day before check in and all day the next day. Lunch was lovely but very slow. Waited 45 mins for a sandwich. Think they we’re short staffed as the bar also took 25 mins to get a drink. The staff were really helpful and although we didn’t book breakfats the manager allowed me to get a coffee in the morning. Another guest told me the breakfast was fantastic. Free parking but make sure you register your reg plate at reception. I would say my only criticism was that our room was so tiny. Room 212. I banged straight into a case stool as I entered and you could barely get around the bed . Too much furniture for such a tiny room. We did only book the basic room but this was exceptionally small even for basic. Also it looked out over the laurndey racks ..Will definitely be staying again but not in that room.

Lovely old fashioned hotel, with nice outside garden, and heated pool to enjoy. Stayed for a breakfast, and dinner, and both meals were of good quality. Service was friendly, and helpful, within the hotel. Cleanliness was good. Also, situated near Dorking town. Enjoyed the scenic walk around the hotel, fab view. Only criticism is the hotel could use a bit of an update, as some areas need attention.

Didn't have breakfast as the price of £17 was to me, excessive.

The Stay was good, however one of the meals in the restaurant was advertised as a 'Honey glazed rids' and was a single rib that was overcooked and inedible and was sent back uneaten. The restaurant did nothing about this didn't explain offer alternative or remove the poor meal from the bill, we payed the bill and left and will never eat there or stay in the hotel again.

Lovely clean spacious room with a balcony. The breakfast was fantastic, catered for all tastes and the staff could not do enough for us . We would definitely return

The only thing that let it down was the breakfast, but the staff were fantastic!
