Very poor indeed. Was checked in and told 'oh by the way we have no hot water'. Was given the option to book at another hotel but without an immediate refund it wasn't possible. Lots of apologies but to be honest was a poor response. No offer of compensation. Not even a free drink! Even with hot water I would never stay again, Customer service was lacking somewhat. Even when I did check in and put my registration number in their tablet I was told I put the wrong number in! Like I don't know my own reg!! Stayed for 2 nights and hot water was never fixed even though the radiators were crazy hot. I'm in the trades so a wash was much needed after a day's work. Sponge bath and boiling the kettle is not good enough Will never stay again that's for sure

I booked the Chequers as a mid way journey point before moving to France. Hotel was easy to find and park car in large rear car park. Receptionist was enchanting and helpful. Bar staff were very good, friendly and helpful. Rooms clean and tidy. Whole venue oozes with character. All staff were exceptional. Thanks for a lovely stay 😊

Nobody on reception when I arrived - eventually found the receptionist in the bar. Parking availability isn’t guaranteed as a hotel guest because the car park has very limited spaces, shared with bar/restaurant patrons (and Xmas party attendees). Money has been spent on modernising the ground floor but that’s where any investment seems to have stopped. You go up the stairs to the first floor and even the carpet changes from contemporary to 90s parents living room. Wasn’t asked how my stay was on departure, otherwise I would have told them the water in the shower went icy cold twice that morning when I was trying to use it. Generally offers less than the refurbished Travelodge rooms, or newer built Travelodge and Premier Inns in the town centre.

Great location only 5 mins from the racecourse, good breakfast, good value , free car parking , fluffy towels , comfy bed , probably needs a refurb in places ( windows ) traffic noise woke us up quite early but not an issue! Quick check in & out all in all a good stay .

The place was tawdry, the room, especially the en suite, was dirty, dusty and I had to unblock the toilet after use. The extract system had failed before we got there. I didn’t report any of this as I was there to go to a funeral. The fire alarm seemed to have mind of its own, going off spuriously for no apparent reason! Cooked breakfast was barely warm and I was kept waiting for toast. The morning alarm was from a refrigerated food delivery van, beautifully positioned outside our accommodation.

Good value for the price. Exceptionally clean.Large spacious room, very comfotable bed. I requested a ground floor room; I was told it would open onto the car park which is in a secure off-street courtyard, but that was actually very convenient for me. Good breakfast. Centrally located in Newbury.

The staff and check in were great. Room standard is fine but cleanliness not up to scratch. It was obvious after spending a little time in the room no furniture had been moved during the clean (hair scrunchies under one chair, litter under another). Also the kettle was full of loose limescale. The biggest issue is the room location - room 306 faces the car park meaning cars, guests and the general public (who use the car park as a shortcut) passing close to your window noisily and frequently through the night. Very poor sleep.

The breakfast was excellent, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Great walking distance to all shops and restaurants (Bills was excellent!). Easy parking with a big lot. Spacious, clean rooms. Only issue was the electrical couldn’t support our adapters.

I was allocated room 101, which opened to the 1st floor lobby where the stairs and 2 corridors converged. This together with the fact that the room window face out to the main road AND wasn’t double glazed, meant the room was noise from people going up and down the stairs and from traffic and pedestrians outside.

Depends on who is staffing reception as to the level of warmth and friendliness in interactions. Had an executive room first night and standard double the second. Much preferred the standard double 💁‍♀️ good find of a hotel for ease of access to shops and restaurants and overall good value for money. The hotel is clean, comfortable, with quality bedding and towelling etc. and comfortable beds. Has quaint elements to the hotel and could imagine it being a high end boutique hotel but as stands, it sits within its niche and we wouldn’t hesitate to stay again. Just would be nice if some of the team members smile just a little 😏

The Hotel had a new check in computerized system that was far from efficient Th color lady on reception struggled with this and a very slow check in prevailed. She has been at the Chequers for some while and is alwayshappy and most efficent

I have stayed in The Chequers several times while visiting family. This time for 6 days.The staff are great. They have always accommodated an early check in which is highly appreciated. The room is serviced daily. The location in Newbury town is excellent for local restaurants etc. Adequate car parking.

Good choice for central Newbury and attending the horse racing. Plenty of parking, walkable to the course and local restaurants, comfortable rooms and decent breakfast with friendly and helpful staff.

Very convenient to access main trunk road through Newbury and very close to the town centre. Large carpark behind the hotel. Room was spacious and comfortable, breakfast was great. Excellent value for money.

Great location as it is at the top of the main shopping street. Staff were friendly, breakfast was great, plenty of free parking on site and easy to get to and from the main A34 dual carriageway. Tea and coffee facilities in the room are great, a small thing but it made a big difference.

We love this hotel, have stayed here x4. We had a ground floor room which was spacious & clean, very comfortable bed with lovely bedding. The bathroom and shower had all you needed and the apartment was well equipped. Fantastic breakfast and fantastic food with happy friendly staff. We visit family in the area and will choose this hotel each time we come. Super location! Super vacation! Super happy! Highly recommend. Thankyou!

Good sized room with comfy bed and large bathroom and quiet. Initial impression of the room was good, but did then notice that it could do with an update. Bottles of water in the room was a nice touch. Negatives were the step up into the bathroom and not having privacy glass in our bathroom, although there was in our daughters room, there was a blind to pull down. But when you can see into the properties across the road from the toilet you feel the need to keep the blind down all the time. Had dinner in the restaurant which felt expensive, along with the cost of drinks, for the quality. Buffet breakfast with an acceptable selection for cooked options but no pastries on offer which would have been nice. Great to have free parking.

Lovely rooms spacious, like that they have good size baths and shower option. we’ve stayed before. This time only disappointment was the breakfast the quality of the food was great but the kitchen didn’t seem to be able to cope with the demand needed for that morning as many items at the same time were not available and many people were stood around waiting quite a while.

A ver nice hotel, great for our day at races. 25 min walk from track or a £10 by taxi. Hotel was comfortable nice room and good shower. The only slight mention breakfast was a bit slow as they ran out of food but in all fairness we were near the end of the service and they did sort it out.
