Older room but with plenty of charm. Pool area looks clean and nice. Staff was very helpful. Elevator situation is a bit odd if you have bad knees or require wheelchair accessibility. You'll have to leave the building and walk around to another set of side doors in order to access the elevator. Other than that, I'd stay there again

Pool was closed for two days and we booked just to get pool time with the kids!

Positives: Great Location, good price, very friendly staff, clean, large rooms and bathroom, walkable area, I felt safe being on my own Negatives: Breakfast not included, and although it's not pool season, the pool needs to be resurfaced, steps from the lobby to the elevators could be problematic for some people

Overall it’s a nice place to stay. Very close to downtown, has a pool, breakfast was good. Fitness center needs a desperate upgrade/maintenance. Treadmills don’t work, functional trainer pulley’s are busted. Other than that, it is a great choice for the price.

Seems a bit scary where the parking lot is not well lit.

The room was clean. Staff was always friendly and the parking is convenient and safe. My only problem was there was a child in the room above me stomping on the floor continuously it was reported to the front desk, but basically nothing happened. The second night they were there I had to take something to help me sleep

It didn't have bugs like other places did.

The floor in my room had not been vacuumed. There was a small cockroach on the curtains and I woke up covered in bug bed bites. The staff was very friendly, but I would not stay here again due to the cleanliness issue and obviously the bug bed issue needs to be addressed.

No fan in bathroom ceiling looks to have mold, there was a roach in bathroom no body wash in dispenser

Overall well kept up but cleaness terrible I found a beg bug in the bed they gave us another room but staff and management sucks. Use to stay there all the time but it's overall terrible now wouldn't be recommend to anyone.

Overall our stay was a good experience. The rooms are a bit outdated and our room had a mold/ mildew smell. Other than that, the service we received was great and the room served its purpose. Lots of restaurants and coffee shops in walking distance.

I had a salad when I first arrived to my room. Through it in the fridge so I could eat it the next day, went to get it the next day and realized my fridge wasn’t plugged up, so my salad was spoiled. There was a lot of grime and stains in the shower and the shower head wasn’t clean either. It’s very dark in the room so at night time you can barely see anything even with all the lights on. My room key deactivated at least 7 times and I had to keep going to the front desk to have it reset. Overall, not the best stay at a hotel that I’ve had. I probably won’t be returning.

It was clean, comfortable, quiet in a great location. A little dated but great price- would totally stay again!

Clean room and entire hotel, great staff and excellent parking. Good place to stay for Wake Forest football games etc. Will definitely stay again in the future.

Friendly staff, very clean room and hotel.

I didn't like the shortage of outlets in the room. It would be nice to see an upgraded nightstand that has additional outlets and USB connections.

Place was nice as were staff, but while my room smelled fine when I checked in, it later smelled like marijuana, which lasted all night and finally went away in the morning. Undoubtedly another guest, but not pleasant also, door didn't block sound at all so I could here other guests in the hallway all night long.

Second time I stayed at this hotel.Its a older hotel with lots of charm.Staff was friendly rooms bigger then most hotels.I would stay again if the price point continued to stay affordable.

Great value Great location Needs some updating

This is a decent hotel that is reasonably priced and close to downtown. It was really problematic, though, that their wifi wasn't working on the first night, and the staff didn't seem very seized with the problem. It also sounded like it had been a problem for a while. As well, they didn’t have a recycle bin in the room and only gave us one regular coffee, even though there were two of us. That said, if you have a good data plan on your phone, this hotel could be a good choice, since it's clean and central.

No frills here. Very basic. For the price I was expecting more. Not even one usb plug in the room. One tiny bar of soap. Of course we could ask for more but shouldn’t need to.

Bed was not very comfortable, when you got into the bed it you automatically rolled into the middle. Found that to be odd. Mattresses aren't really comfortable either. Besides that the stay was good.

Quiet but pretty dated both inside and outside. Bathroom light fixture was all rusted from condensation. Bed was not comfortable.

The A/C didn’t work in the first room. I was moved to a second room where it also never fully cooled.

Horrible staff and very rude

The property did not have enough staff to handle the check -in in a timely manner. At all times, there was only one person on the front desk to check-in and to answer calls. There was a large group conference and a large wedding going on at the same time. It was too much for the front desk to handle efficiently.

Clean room , wonderful staff

Really enjoyed our stay! We felt safe and comfortable the entire time. The staff was exceptional.

Stay was very nice. There was a convention being held, so there was a lot of people but didn’t disturb the trip. May need some additional staff due to having to wait at check out desk for over 10 minutes every time (check in, purchase breakfast, ask a question).

The hotel was quiet which I love especially when I'm on business and it was clean. The front desk gentlemen were so friendly and accommodating and I have no complaints

The staff here is excellent we have stayed here on several occasions and each time has always been excellent the staff at the front desk was very friendly each and every time you won't be disappointed with your stay here. Just want to thank Mr Fred he was very helpful anytime there was a problem

Check in was smooth, staff was very professional and informative. The hotel and room was very clean.

I have never been to a hotel that had no one at the front desk. I waited several minutes before two people came from another part of the hotel. There was no signage to tell you to wait or give an explanation. There was no music or any indication there was anyone about. I was told they have to do periodic ‘rounds’. Ok. But. I was processed and given my key card. I did not feel welcome and I had to ask about the breakfast. The hallway was long and narrow. No one around. Creepy. I have traveled to Europe and never had this experience. I won’t go back.

The entire facility was very clean and staff were wonderful. I really appreciated they were pet friendly. The rear entrance into the hotel and rooms is up quite a few stairs or a ramp. These significantly impacted my physically. Also, I should have done more homework to see if there were any restaurants within walking distance, I found none.

The Hawthorne Inn is an older modern- styled hotel, built in 1982, on the edge of downtown Winston-Salem, NC.The location is excellent for strolling through the downtown business district. Several good restaurants nearby, as well as coffee shops, clubs, and landmarks. Old Salem, the historical settlement of the Moravian religious sect that began the town is within a 2-3 block walking distance. As for the hotel itself, it was clean, comfortable, and accessible for those who have such needs. The staff was extremely cordial. I liked the accommodations quite a bit, with two exceptions; when I first walked into the hotel there was a pungent odor of a chemical nature that actually gave me a headache. It was so potent that I acquired sinusitis several days later that I believe was environmentally induced. Smelt like a cleaning solvent or paint. I've been back from my trip for 3 days and using my prescription nasal sprays. Just beginning to feel better. Lastly, I specifically booked a room on a "no smoking" floor. I smelt smoke as soon as I got off the elevator and approached my room which was the first room on the hall. I called the front desk to tell them. The clerk apologized and said he would spray my room. I explained that the odor was not in my room, but coming from a room into the hall. The clerk thanked me but I didn't sense he'd do anything about it. Yet, I didn't smell smoke the next day. Liked the hotel, but not sure I'd return; a little afraid odors might return!

Close to the hospital.

Great location downtown, but was confusing getting around. The room was nice and clean, the staff were wonderful, but the breakfast was an additional $10 for anything other than what was presented.

The hotel is close to the convention center and my activities.

The room was nice. The price was great. I was able to walk to the downtown area straight from the hotel.

I needed to stay in a motel while my husband was in a nearby hospital. The room was clean and comfortable. I didn't spend time there but to sleep. It was easy to get to from the hospital but not as easy to get back to the hospital. I would stay there again and recommend it to others.

Quick stay overnight, in town for a graduation. Didn't have a chance to use any amenities or eat breakfast. But what we saw was clean, safe, close to lots if dining. Just stay away from MLK drive area as with all big cities, sketchy area. But we would stay at Hawthorne again.

Short stay but great value and location. Friendly staff and a clean hotel

This is a great older hotel. The building is older and has an old charm; the reception and restaurant are in one part/building and the rest in an attached high rise next to it. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The pool patio is nice. The breakfast is not included so we didn't partake, but the coffee is complimentary and the restaurant area looked nice. There are a few eateries/bakery/coffee shop and Mexican restaurant across the street. Oh, and the Truist Stadium is an easy walk away.

Breakfast was paid and very poor. They do not accept apple pay

Front desk could not help me find local channels on the TV. It turns on to a list of channels, none of which were ABC, NBC, or CBS. Going up and down around those were just blank. He said “You get whatever the package is that they have.” I later saw a code to scan that was behind the Tv and it showede how to get them! Also the continental breakfast choice was a muffin, a bagel and an orange of apple.

The hotel was very basic and so was the room. The room was very large with a comfortable bed. The breakfast in the morning was very disappointing. They only offered muffins, fruit, and bagels. A lot of other continental breakfast, offers, yogurt, oatmeal and cereal, but this one did not

Check in was great, room was clean and quiet. Hard time with using key card to enter from outside of building. Advertised continental breakfast. ( something I look for on a stay) There was a charge for the breakfast.

Good Breakfast

The parking was good. The rooms were clean. The microwave was a little out dated. Some of the outlets didn't work. You have to pay for breakfast, kinda disappointing. The staff were all very nice ! It wasn't a bad stay just not quite up to what I was hoping for.

Great location, within walking distance of downtown W-S and Old Salem. Room was spacious and clean. Breakfast is, unfortunately, a bit lacking -- bagels and muffins. You need to buy a voucher for a hot breakfast, which usually isn't worth it.

Decent historic building hotel, a little dated. Comfortable and clean though. Don’t book if looking for breakfast, chocolate muffins and bagels…..nothing else.
