I expected to be in the annex, but the room was very good and had a balcony. Food was excellent, generous portions. To be honest, I thought the wine was a bit pricey. Very nice garden, and plenty of parking. The hotel is a training hotel, so the staff are knowledgeable.

Only stayed for one night, however the hotel and room was clean. Limited transport options so unless you're driving be sure to book your cab in advance. Hotel doesn't have any additional sports facilities however when asked, they did say I could use the university facilities although I didn't persue. Good dining options.

We stayed here using some Tesco vouchers to pay for the stay. We booked a Superior Balcony Room for one night. Check-in was very friendly and quick, and we were walked to our room by the receptionist. The room was lovely, but we did discover an issue with the electronic lock — it wouldn’t lock when we went to leave. We reported it to reception, and someone came to have a look at it quite quickly. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to resolve the issue, so we were moved to a Deluxe Room. The hotel is beautiful, and the old house is lovely to have a look around. There’s also a beautiful lounge where guests can relax. We had dinner in the Park Brasserie, which was wonderful. The roast beef was perfectly cooked, and everything on the plate was excellent — it was also a generous portion. There’s a wonderful dessert trolley to tempt you after a hearty main course. Breakfast the next morning was equally good. It was served in the same restaurant, with a good selection of both hot and cold options available.

The service and staff were fantastic as was the hotel itself, my only criticism was it was difficult to sleep as we could hear loudly the function going on downstairs but fortunately this finished by midnight and then it was wonderfully quiet

Staff always first class. Hot classic room in the old part of the hotel. Booked a classic room but was hoping for the new side as cooler. Also noisy wedding event outside the window. Non wedding guests would be better suited away from the event.

The hotel is well kept in a beautiful setting and the staff are competent and friendly. The choices available on the dinner menu becomes very restrictive if you stay for three or more days. The hotel would benefit from a proper bar where one could sit and relax in place of the counter in the restaurant.

The newer garden rooms are comfortable and those with a balcony have a very nice view ovr the hotrl gardens and university sports grounds. Plenty of walking around the hitrl and area. Hotel reception seemed a little tired but the public rooms and the new block sre sll very comfortable. A very pleasant stay.

Fantastic hotel from condition of the room to service to breakfast. Area is fantastic. Eating outside in Spring/Summer/Fall is a great opportunity there. Bar is really nice too. Rooms are fantastic, very modern. Overall, an excellent A+ hotel. Will stay anytime again. Will highly recommend to all, without any reservation

This was a reasonably priced and fairly comfortable option. Staff were generally very helpful and exceptionally polite. However, on our arrival after being seated in the brasserie, we had to wait a long time and eventually find someone, to place our order. We liked our room with balcony, and the parkland environment. However, it was impossible to use the bathroom during the night without waking the other occupant because of light spillage. As a suggestion it would be good for the hotel to work with the university management to develop a safe pedestrian route to the bus stops at South Courts - the footpath runs out at the car parks and we found we had to walk on the road to progress towards the bus stop. This would be completely unmanageable for someone in a wheelchair. There was a wedding going on during our stay and as the wedding party were using the enclosed garden space, we weren't sure if we could sit there.

Having checked in and headed to the bar. We were sat in the beautiful gardens enjoying our drink, only to be told the gardens would now be closed to the public due to a high school prom. We were moved round to the restaurant patio in the shade, within 20 mins we were then told that no members of the public were allowed outside at all during the prom. And promptly moved indoors. Feel we should of been made aware at booking or at least check in that the facilities would not be available to us. Given a free drink for the inconvenience but staff very uninterested and blamed last minute risk assessments. Laughable considering when we left the restaurant we had to walk through the prom to our room. Dodging all the students having photo shoots in various parts of the hotel. Very disappointing.

Beautiful hotel, very peaceful and the rooms are done out to a high standard. They do not look tired or well worn it really is a lovely hotel. The staff were really polite and attentive. I really can’t fault the fit and finishing of the whole building and rooms. There was no noise from adjacent rooms which you sometimes get with other hotels. The grounds surrounding the hotel are beautifully kept and there is no road or traffic noise. Really is a great stay and location. Comfy beds slept really really well, and nice to have a fridge and safe as standard.

Wivenhoe house was a beautiful building with lots of character. The grounds were gorgwous and the staff were very friendly and helpful Especially the receptionist. The only thing that let it down in my opinion where the finer details in cleanliness. First thibg i noticed in the lobby were cobwebs on the ceiling and the csrpet didnt appear to have been hoovered thay day. The room we stayed in also had cobwebs and dust settled on the cieling beams. Grout could have done with a deeper clean in the bathroom but overall it was a lovely clean room, presented well with stunning views. I would still recommend this hotel, it was a good experience

Excellent hotel. I was very impressed by it all. Our room was the Charles Gooch Suite, which was so lovely and extremely large, perfect as we had our 4 year old son with us, who slept on the pull out sofa. I love how the hotel keeps the period features of the house so well, yet of course has all the modern facilities. Overall: spotlessly clean, helpful staff, comfortable beds, beautiful room, i would definitely recommend/return if in the area

The hotel was lovely, very nice room with wonderful views over the local countryside from the balcony. The room was nice and clean, and well appointed with a good coffee machine. Very nice bathroom, again clean. Breakfast in the morning was lovely, good quality and nice and hot buffet. Great coffee options. Was peasantly surprised.

Wivenhoe house is beautiful, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The bedroom was very comfortable and spotlessly clean, it’s nice to have a coffee machine instead of the usual cheap instant sachets. Bathroom was a good size, extremely clean with a powerful shower. Food both in the evening and breakfast was well presented and delicious. All the staff were very friendly and professional. We will stay again.

It was a great hotel but there was no AC in the room. So we had to check out after one night. The staff was excellent and they were gracious enough to cancel the second night booking. The Breakfast was wonderful.

Nice hotel in a great setting, very handy for the university sports complex next door. Food and service in the restaurant was excellent. The only thing to note is that this hotel does not have air conditioning, there is a fan in the room but it can still get pretty warm if the weather is nice.

Staff kindly upgraded our room. Had a lovely balcony with view over fields. Room was fabulous. Clean and comfortable- bathroom seemed new and shower was amazing. Really loved the hotel and wished we were staying longer. Also on uni campus where our son residing so very convenient.

Stayed for 1 night on business. Everything was in general fine. Room was a bit warm and no air con meant fans needed to be on all night. Dinner was fair however fish and chips were overcooked not burnt but in the fryer way too long. Lots of training ongoing with new staff so expected a few mishaps. Would stay again if in the area.

Everything about this hotel is excellent. The staff are super friendly and helpful whether they’re on reception, the room cleaners, or brassiere staff. Comfortable beds and great views across the hotel grounds. My only tiny gripe was at breakfast when, even though the menu says that cooked breakfast is cooked to order unless it is particularly busy ( which it wasn’t when I was there as there were only about 8 people having breakfast), the bacon had obviously been pre-cooked and stood under a hot lamp for too long so that it was hard and rubbery. A shame as it was top class bacon. That aside, everything else was just about perfect.

The room was lovely, but we did discover an issue with the electronic lock — it wouldn’t lock when we went to leave. We reported it to reception, and someone came to have a look at it quite quickly. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to resolve the issue, so we were moved to a Deluxe Room. The hotel is beautiful, and the old house is lovely to have a look around. There’s also a beautiful lounge where guests can relax. We had dinner in the Park Brasserie, which was wonderful. The roast beef was perfectly cooked, and everything on the plate was excellent — it was also a generous portion. There’s a wonderful dessert trolley to tempt you after a hearty main course. Breakfast the next morning was equally good. It was served in the same restaurant, with a good selection of both hot and cold options available.

Recently refurbished room with tea and a Nespresso coffee machine. Very comfortable bed so good nights sleep. Staff were superb - well trained, knowledgeable, helpful. Breakfast was excellent with everything you’d expect. Dinner a la carte with a menu to suit all budgets and tastes. Try the Pigs Ears! Highly recommended.

Wonderful 2 night stay. Staff excellent with good service. We had breakfast and evening meal - food really good. Rooms very clean - we were in the garden annex 2 Fans in room to use which we did as hot weather. Would definitely stay ago. Couldn’t fault anything.

We were very lucky and got an upgrade to a room with a balcony. The bedroom was very spacious and well supplied with tea, coffee etc. Bed was extremely comfortable. Bathroom very good too. We ate in the restaurant. Food was lovely. All of the people we met, in the reception and restaurant were friendly, helpful and effecient.

Only stayed for one night, however the hotel and room was clean. Limited transport options so unless you're driving be sure to book your cab in advance. Hotel doesn't have any additional sports facilities however when asked, they did say I could use the university facilities although I didn't persue. Good dining options.

Nice hotel in a great setting, very handy for the university sports complex next door. Food and service in the restaurant was excellent. The only thing to note is that this hotel does not have air conditioning, there is a fan in the room but it can still get pretty warm if the weather is nice.

Staff kindly upgraded our room. Had a lovely balcony with view over fields. Room was fabulous. Clean and comfortable- bathroom seemed new and shower was amazing. Really loved the hotel and wished we were staying longer. Also on uni campus where our son residing so very convenient.

We only spent one night, but would happily have stayed for more! The reception in the hotel smelt lovely and we were greeted by friendly reception staff. The room felt luxurious and it was very spacious. The bed was a good size too. The setting was quite unique - as you drive pretty much onto the university of Essex campus, but you’re far enough away from everything for it to be quiet. We enjoyed a little winter walk around the lake before we left…I’m sure it’d be lovely to go further in summer, but it was a bit muddy! Overall, we had a great stay & will keep it on our list to return again.

This was a reasonably priced and fairly comfortable option. Staff were generally very helpful and exceptionally polite. However, on our arrival after being seated in the brasserie, we had to wait a long time and eventually find someone, to place our order. We liked our room with balcony, and the parkland environment. However, it was impossible to use the bathroom during the night without waking the other occupant because of light spillage. As a suggestion it would be good for the hotel to work with the university management to develop a safe pedestrian route to the bus stops at South Courts - the footpath runs out at the car parks and we found we had to walk on the road to progress towards the bus stop. This would be completely unmanageable for someone in a wheelchair. There was a wedding going on during our stay and as the wedding party were using the enclosed garden space, we weren't sure if we could sit there.

Stayed in the new wing, Room was clean, comfortable and well appointed. Staff were lovely and helpful and breakfast in the room was great. We also had dinner and the food was excellent despite the team also coping with 2 Christmas parties.

I expected to be in the annex, but the room was very good and had a balcony. Food was excellent, generous portions. To be honest, I thought the wine was a bit pricey. Very nice garden, and plenty of parking. The hotel is a training hotel, so the staff are knowledgeable.

Great service, fantastic rooms - clean and spacious. People were friendly. The only let down is the food. They really need an overhaul in the kitchen, everything from breakfast to dinner was not in keeping with the high standards of the rest of the hotel. Cocktails and drinks were excellent.

The hotel was lovely, very nice room with wonderful views over the local countryside from the balcony. The room was nice and clean, and well appointed with a good coffee machine. The hotel is well kept in a beautiful setting and the staff are competent and friendly. The choices available on the dinner menu becomes very restrictive if you stay for three or more days. The hotel would benefit from a proper bar where one could sit and relax in place of the counter in the restaurant.

Stayed for 1 night on business. Everything was in general fine. Room was a bit warm and no air con meant fans needed to be on all night. Dinner was fair however fish and chips were overcooked not burnt but in the fryer way too long. Lots of training ongoing with new staff so expected a few mishaps. Would stay again if in the area.

Nice hotel, lovely setting. The rooms were spacious and comfortable but too warm, it needs air conditioning not just a fan which didn’t do much. The breakfast was ok, the cold part of the buffet breakfast was fine but the hot wasn’t good enough, it was cold !!

The hotel bedroom was spotlessly clean and very comfortable with everything you need in the room for a pleasant stay. The staff we encountered all seemed very friendly and helpful. Parking is easy and the hotel is surrounded by beautiful grounds. We always choose this hotel when visiting our relatives in Colchester.

Beautiful building that has a beautiful sitting room, but unfortunately the rest of the hotel was a bit tired. Cobwebs on windows on the exterior, the room doors are begging for a wipe down. The room inside was very clean so kudos there, but again the door to restroom could really use a clean. The staff were so helpful and kind so I hope the grounds can do them proud.

This was our second stay at Wivenhoe House Hotel and we will definitely hope to stay again. The first time we stayed in the main house, and the second time in the new extension, and both times the rooms were fantastic, every amenity supplied and excellent service from the staff in both housekeeping and the restaurant. Only an overnight stay but so relaxing, thank you.
