The hotel had friendly staff and has several outstanding restaurants just steps away. The rooftop bar with outside fire tables was great and a nice place for a drink. Parking was an issue - you can pay about $29 a day (plus tips) for the valet service or (beginning at 7am - 6pm, Sunday free) you will need to plug the meters 25 cents for 15 minutes. The meter enforcement is ferocious so don’t tempt fate.

Very friendly check in, quite and clean room. Love, they had a Starbucks, a pub. And walking distance to shops downtown. Only down fall was parking. Its free street from 6p - 7am. Other then that you have to pay a meter to park.

The check-in staff were not friendly and when we only got one towel the second night we called and they said we had to come down and get it? The room was spacious and could have been a king bed, bed was hard. Property was nice but the breakfast was not at the hotel but was $15 each to Starbucks attached. The Irish pub, rooftop bar and location are all reasons to stay here but no hot tub or pool there are better values in town.

Great location. Historic charm and architecture with modern updates throughout. Very nice fitness center. Clean and comfy. The multi level rooftop bar was perfect for enjoying a cocktail and taking in the sights. Fun Irish pub downstairs with outdoor seating and good service.

Historic, interesting, large Starbucks, remodeled bathroom with excellent shower, large comfy bed, lots of dining options close by, front desk staff hit and miss - some excellent and accommodating - other rude and offensive, housekeeping excellent, large towels, quiet ac, elevators a bit quirky old.

Charming older downtown hotel with a FABULOUS rooftop bar & restaurant! Nice corner room on high floor, seven big fluffy pillows on a very comfy bed. Smallish bathroom which caused the soap/shampoo dispensers to be knocked off the wall previously. Must've been a very skinny person who installed them. Attentive service, coffee maker actually had LIGHT toast coffee, our fave, very rare, usually muddy dreadful dark roast. Would cost at least twice the rate annywhere else. Interesting 'good, fun downtown fountain square, bronzes of the presidents, galleries, restaurants. Stay there!!!

Super cool historic hotel right in the heart of quaint Rapid City. Walkable to shops and great restaurants. Awesome 10th floor lounge and rooftop area for a nice cocktail. Rooms are nicely decorated and very clean.

This hotel is beautiful, but a litte dirty in the room, the sitting chair was filthy as well as the carpet, even as old as the hotel is, those things can remain clean and updated. The roof top bar was gorgeous but the music choice was extremely loud, like being in a dance club, we all left and went somewhere else, Not relaxing at all.

My room had dirty carpets and debris from the last occupants, and the jacuzzi was dirty. I also found a daily incidental charge of $50 to my credit card with no itemized billing to explain what the charges were for. The price is insane for how run down this place is.

It has so much potential to be authentic to the area. BUT the lobby area was quite worn looking. Front door had leaves etc. when we arrived at night - We came down in morning and mess was still there. I was certainly expecting more from a Bonvoy. Drinking glasses were left at the elevator openings and still there when we left 2 days later. The bathroom needed a good scrub ! The 2 places to eat were loud - and had strange hours for dining. The good parts: rooms were quiet and beds fabulous. There was a hugh Starbucks that was entered from the lobby which was wonderful. My suggestions: ! get a good cleaning staff and 2 a manager that takes pride in how things look!

Love the hotel; the design elements are well thought out and pleasing. Great location. The room was not clean. There was hair on the floor in the bathroom. There were coffee rings in the coffee cups - obviously not replaced between guests. The windows were filthy.

The hotel entrance outside and inside was dirty, The room needed a deep cleansing, bathroom especially and both beds had been slept in and linens not changed. I requested new linens which were brought asap and I changed both beds. No offer of accommodation was made for the inconvenience. Also, the area did not feel safe and has quite a transient/homeless issue. I will never stay at this hotel again.

Booked last minute while traveling through and needed a quick overnight stay. Upon entering, the lobby was very inviting with beautiful Christmas decorations and a warm fireplace—especially appreciated given how cold it was outside. We visited the on-site Irish pub to watch Sunday night football and were greeted by friendly staff. It was also great that both the hotel and pub are dog-friendly, allowing us to bring our pup along. The beds were comfortable, and the room was clean. We would definitely stay here again.

Great location in a historical property. “Historical” should be translated as small rooms with no desk and no chair. Refrigerator in our room didn’t work. Bathroom and main door stuck to the point that the main door needed to be shouldered to open it from hallway and heaved open from other side. Our “original” room was not ready for check-in at 4PM so we took first available and it was right next to elevator bank.

The common areas of the hotel, lobby, hallways, even elevators were very nice, cozy, and interesting. The room itself was disappointing. It was VERY small, as was the bathroom - so small that two queen beds, as is basically standard in the US, wouldn't even fit, so two doubles were used instead. They were comfy, but everything was just way too small. The bathroom basically had no countertop. The room would be great for a single person with one bed, but that's it. Unfortunately, we won't be back, which is a bummer because the common areas are cool.

If you want to be right in the mix up in things, this will be a great stay! The historical hotel and all of the amenities within and close by we’re unbeatable. If you’re on the weekends parking is free and was not hard to find. Be prepared for some train noise if you are a light sleeper.

This room was not as pictured when we booked it. The bathroom was pictured with a sink and counter, ours had tiny pedestal with no place for anything. The bathroom was 3 X 5!!! Our reservation came with free breakfast which we did not receive (they didn't even have breakfast except for starbucks). Bathroom door had caked on dust. Room was so tiny, you could barely walk between bed and bureau. It was NOT the room requested based on pics

There was a live band in the Irish Pub connected to the hotel. We requested a different room on Friday night and were moved immediately to a quieter room. However, that same room on Saturday night was loud as the live band was shaking the entire building. I went to the front desk to discuss this at 11pm, but that person was unable to do anything about it. The band finally quit at midnight. I don't have any complaint about the staff. However, there should have been someone on site to cut the music to a reasonable level.

The bathroom was the smallest one I had ever seen. It was smaller than a closet and barely one person could fit in the shower. Was highly disappointed in that as the pictures were completely different. Room was clean, bed was hard.

Our room was very small with a small shower. If you are a big person you will not be able to move in it. My friends had a bigger room with a bigger bathroom. So you can ask the front Desk. You can walk to restaurants and shopping

Both front desk receptionists were ridiculous. The first was some dude trying to look like a woman, starring off into space while talking to me. The 2nd receptionist that I approached the next day completely ignored my existence until I tossed the key cards in front of her to check out. 1 elevator was out of service so it was either stairs or wait 15 to 20 minutes for the other elevator. The bed so lumpy and hard that I only slept 2 hours. Vallet was another freak show who didn't even speak. I expected a much better stay and was mainly let down by the class of the staff. Will never return to this hotel even if it's the only option in Rapid.

Everything at the Alex Johnson is wonderful. The hotel staff went out of their way to correct the problem that was created by my use of Expedia. I will never use Expedia again. Use the hotel’s website or call the property, I do not believe my outcome would have been the same at some other properties. The Alex Johnson went above and beyond to make me a happy guest.

The desk clerks and valets could not have been better. Our problem was getting clean towels and to empty trash cans. We had to call 3 times before we got a response. I don’t know if there is a problem with it, but the air vent in the bathroom sounded like a freight train. Room 304.

The hotel was nice and the Irish pub downstairs was lovely. The room was small but clean. My only real complaint was the parking. There was no parking nearby so valet parking was required. The only other time that valet was my only choice was in Chicago which I expected. There wasn’t even anywhere to stop for the valet and my husband had to drive around until a spot opened up for him to park for the valet. Also the valet took a long time. They didn’t have enough people working. If the service had been good I would have accepted it but we called ahead and still need to wait 20 minutes after we got downstairs to get our car.

We loved the historical aspect of the hotel and the staff was friendly but the room itself was dirty, had damage, and outside felt unsafe due to homeless and drunks. All situations were handled by local police but for the amount of money you pay, we felt that more could have been done for safety as well as upkeep with the room.

Right in the heart of downtown so was able to walk for meals. And parking was free on the weekends when we happen to be there so saved a little coin. Oh… but most of the shops were closed on Sunday too… that must’ve been why!

This is the second time I have stayed at this property and both experiences were wonderful. The hotel is full of history. The staff are great. There is a Starbucks in the lobby. It is conveniently located in downtown Rapid City and close to Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument. Thank you for another great stay!

Great place to stay to see downtown Rapid City and good jumping off point for attractions nearby. The Pub in the hotel was excellent and there are many great restaurants in the area such as the Firehouse and Tally's Silver Spoon for breakfast.

The Hotel couldn't find my Reservation ( But claimed it wasn't their fault but Expedia's ). Just so you know some of the rooms are very small but the location is Excellent to everything Downtown. the restaurant up stairs is Very good! The Breakfast is UGH! Cold because they have to bring everything down from the Upstairs Kitchen!

This hotel is okay for a short stay in Rapids City. Rooms are very tiny, and bathrooms are even smaller. Front desk was not friendly upon arrival. Bathroom lights did not work upon arrival and no effort to fix or move to another room was given. The next day someone did come to look at it and all they had to do was flip a breaker in the hallway. That should have been done upon arrival. Restaurant was very slow to serve food. Roof top bar was very nice! Interesting memorabilia around the hotel.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel has an interesting history and is so close to multiple great restaurants. We recommend the walleye fingers and bison burger at the Vertex, Breakfast and fish and chips was excellent at Paddy O'neil's, and Breakfast at Tally's SS. The bus tour we booked through Viator was fabulous as well. Beds really comfortable!

The experience is great. It is a historic hotel，and it is very beautiful and stylish. It located in the downtown Rapid City，so it is close to bars and galleries. In general，the service is good. The front desk staff and valet parking staff are friendly and helpful. I went to the rooftop bar，the food and service are both very good. I also went to the paddy oneill‘s bar，but it is very disappointing. The food is ok but the service is terrible. The only complaint is the room condition. It is not maintained very well. The crack between the door and the floor is so big，and I can see the light from outside. I stayed in several other historic hotels that are operated by Omni or Marriott. Their room conditions are much better than this hotel.

The hotel was fantastic ! The staff were super friendly and helpful. Cocktails and dinner at the rooftop bar were delicious and there were many Gluten free options for me including fresh gf bread.
