The staff at the Imperial were so accommodating from the booking to the stay. We booked in advance but had to change the reservation due to my dog being unwell and I needed to bring him with me for the night. The staff switched us to a pet friendly room with no issues. The room had a blanket and water bowl for my dog which was a lovely touch, along with information on pet friendly beaches in the area. The staff checked on us during our stay to see if everything was to our liking. I also needed to park near to the room to carry my dog as he’s heavy and they allowed me to park in a space near the accommodation block. Nothing was too much trouble. The staff in the bar were very friendly and also at reception. The hotel is well situated with great views (although not from our particular room but I wasn’t bothered for one night given we had switched rooms at late notice). The room was clean with great amenities including tea, coffee, biscuits, water, all complimentary. As well as the pet friendly touches. The only negative I would say was the shower curtain around the bath. A screen would have been better as it didn’t go all the way round the bath so let quite a lot of water out into the floor, and also swung and stuck to you whilst showering. We had to mop the floor with the towels once finished. We didn’t eat at the hotel so I couldn’t comment on the food but the menu looked really nice. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Lovely hotel, really clean & wonderful breakfasts. I would have given 5 stars if we had not have been in a room overlooking the rear lane, which was used by noisy pedestrians late at night, & dustbin lorry early morning. Free pass to The Barnstaple Hotel pool really appreciated, thank you.

I particularly liked the variety of lounges of different sizes with good views as overlooking the river. The location was especially convenient for river walks and public transport yet at the same time quiet.

Staff were very good. Hotel was in excellent condition for it's age. Our room looked out onto another building so not a great view. Parking is available but tight spots.

Hotel is a traditional hotel with excellent staff (definitely a great asset). Our second stay here and rooms and bathrooms have recently been refurbished. The restaurants are good, breakfast excellent. Car parking avaiable (if you have a disabled badge let reception know and rhey will reserve you a space in the car park). If there is a slight downside to the hotel it would be that the corridors upstairs are a little narrow (the building is older) but there is a lift and we had an accessible room which was excellent.

We ate in the restaurant and the food and wines were excellent. The bedrooms were warm and comfortable with attractive traditional furnishings and immaculate en suites. I really like this hotel, and would suggest it to anyone visiting from overseas as a good example of how things used to be done. The building is older and has all the quirkiness that comes with that. The room I had was reasonably spacious and well appointed, very clean, nothing to really pick fault with. The common areas downstairs are traditionally decorated, well maintained, and display the history of the location well. They are warm and inviting. The real thing about this hotel is that the service element is still there, from reception, to the bar and into the restaurant. Staff are plentiful and attentive, and it all adds up to a very civilised experience. I ate in the restaurant and the food was good, with a decent wine list. The room price is reasonable and the restaurant price is possibly at the high end, but the quality is there and the service and overall vibe made it worthwhile for me. It's all a little posh, but in no way stuck up.

Nice hotel but needs to take a serious look into sound proofing. The guy in the room next to me was on the phone and I could hear his conversation word for word. He may aswell made the call in my room. apart from that it was a nice stay.

The lounge, bistro and restaurant were lovely. Staff were excellent. The food was extremely good. The bedroom was okay, but the decor looked a bit tired. For a four star hotel the the facilities in the room were limited. No spare toilet roll, no shaving mirror and the room itself was a little small. The toilet did not flush that well and the hot water/heating pipes were noisy.

Hotel was lovely, old in style by very grand. Lovely warm rooms, shower over bath but was excellent. Room had empty cupboard for a fridge but non provided. No plug sockets next to bed for phones. Spacious and free car park. Great location. Very grand high end dining room, excellent staff. Would highly recommend.

We very much appreciated the unexpected upgrade to the Imperial Suite. Bathroom was fabulous with one of the best showers ever. The hotel is popular with the older generation, but was in a great location for us and the staff were excellent. Our only criticism was the lack of feather pillows and the hairdryer sounded like it was on its last legs!

Great little hotel, nestled by the river in Barnstaple. Staff were fab and couldn’t do enough for you. Had a very homely feel and was very cosy. Food awesome! Rooms clean and tidy but no air con so had to have the window open then was woken by bin men at 7am. Certainly not the hotels fault! Overall, very much looking forward to staying there again…

The hotel is ideally placed to access the town centre. Room was newly decorated so in excellent condition although the bathroom is a little small. Would have expected more fresh fruit for breakfast, most fruit was tinned and the juices are from concentrate. Overall the hotel and dining is expenive for what is provided.

Big thank you to Bethany, Havey and Gary, I wish I could remember more staff’s name as everyone works in this hotel is so nice and professional. I am so lucky to get an upgrade for my room, this hotel should be rated 5 stars. Service is perfect, my room is nice , clearn and comfortable. I paid 50 pounds for gala Ester dinner, it is very good value as I got drink and 5-course dinner. I love this hotel and will definitely come back with my family. Thank you to everyone in this hotel.

Nice hotel. Staff care a lot and are very attentive - some good banter and nice to see some personalities. Breakfast was a little expensive but very robust portions. Will definitely be on the short-list for my next stay.
Nice hotel. Staff care a lot and are very attentive - some good banter and nice to see some personalities. Breakfast was a little expensive but very robust portions. Will definitely be on the short-list for my next stay.

Property was very good except for a lot of squeaky floor boards which is too be expected in an old building. Food was excellent,plenty of choice of the menu. Staff were very friendly and helpful nothing was too much trouble for them. I would highly recommend this hotel you won’t be disappointed. Highlight for me was the excellent food compliments too the chef.

The location was superb. The River Taw is literally across the road, as is the excellent Barnstaple museum. The room was beautiful and the public areas are smart

Hotel was lovely, old in style by very grand. Lovely warm rooms, shower over bath but was excellent. Room had empty cupboard for a fridge but non provided. No plug sockets next to bed for phones. Spacious and free car park. Great location. Very grand high end dining room, excellent staff. Would highly recommend.

Great little hotel, nestled by the river in Barnstaple. Staff were fab and couldn’t do enough for you. Had a very homely feel and was very cosy. Food awesome! Rooms clean and tidy but no air con so had to have the window open then was woken by bin men at 7am. Certainly not the hotels fault! Overall, very much looking forward to staying there again…

I particularly liked the variety of lounges of different sizes with good views as overlooking the river. The location was especially convenient for river walks and public transport yet at the same time quiet.

The hotel is in an excellent position near the town centre but with an easy to access large car park. The staff are unassuming and helpful. We ate in the restaurant and the food and wines were excellent. The bedrooms were warm and comfortable with attractive traditional furnishings and immaculate en suites. The style is old empire and charming.

I really like this hotel, and would suggest it to anyone visiting from overseas as a good example of how things used to be done. The building is older and has all the quirkiness that comes with that. The room I had was reasonably spacious and well appointed, very clean, nothing to really pick fault with. The common areas downstairs are traditionally decorated, well maintained, and display the history of the location well. They are warm and inviting. The real thing about this hotel is that the service element is still there, from reception, to the bar and into the restaurant. Staff are plentiful and attentive, and it all adds up to a very civilised experience. I ate in the restaurant and the food was good, with a decent wine list. The room price is reasonable and the restaurant price is possibly at the high end, but the quality is there and the service and overall vibe made it worthwhile for me. It's all a little posh, but in no way stuck up.

The food was expensive for what it was my husband had a burger & fries which was £24 & £3 for a shaving of cheese. I had Salmon £24 but must say was lovely..Breakfast was very nice & well serverd…everything else was good..

My wife and I are active octogenarians.This is an excellent hotel for us, for a short break. The staff are genuinely friendly and the decor comfortably slightly old fashioned or traditional. Family group of hotels, well run. Parking adequate but note to reserve if you have blue badge. Food is excellent and breakfasts are brilliant, the menu extensive. This nice hotel is a favourite with us more mature Devonians. Enjoy! Ps. Very clean and ensuite bathroom very good.
