2nd stay here, great place. Bar only being open till 10pm the only negative for me.

Very friendly and accommodating place. The pool area is a great asset

It was a pleasant stay with clean modern room and bathroom. We were on the ground floor and was woken up at 5am with the person upstairs going to the bathroom and having a walk around on the creaky floor - not ideal when away for a relaxing break. We fell asleep again only to be woken up by golfers with noisy caddies walking right past the open bedroom window as the room window opens out onto the golf course walkway + this happened on Saturday and Sunday morning. EV charger outside kept cutting off part way through charging and only managed 11 miles of charge in 2 days. On a more positive note, the room came with access to the swimming room, sauna and hot tub which was lovely. Staff all very pleasant and will return (albeit in an upstairs room] if in the area again - we stayed to attend a nearby wedding at Gosfield Hall. Uber to wedding venue averaged £22 each way

Have seen this hotel come up a few times and thought i would try it when i was working in the area. Being a golf club it has lots of extras, gym, spa, pool etc. The gym was well equipped with the latest tech, the pool area was lovely with a jacuzzi ,steam and sauna room. Clean changing rooms with ample lockers. The room was spacious with one of the largest beds ive seen, decent amenities, tea,coffee n biscuits. Great bathroom and shower. The restaurant was nice, the food was decent with plenty of options and great prices. A great place to stay and i will return.

Clean and quiet hotel lots of parking .. arrived late so missed dinner so only downside was no real bar meals or snacks

We had a good stay - the pool is a welcome addition - check times families can go in so you’re not disappointed. Staff friendly and helpful. Also we didn’t realise food stopped at 8:30pm so we got a take out. Staff helpful with ordering and gave plates and cutlery etc so no problem. Fire alarm in the middle of the night so all evacuated. It was dealt with efficiently and calmly however not much communication or apologies for disruption from staff the following day. That would have been my expectation. Overall a pleasant stay in nice grounds.

Family weekend break - Nov 25. This is more of a sports club with rooms rather than a hotel. Our hotel room was modern and clean. Staff generally friendly and helpful. Pool and spa were very good. Golf was good but the fairways were not as good as my local courses. Racket sports and gym facilities looked great. Food quality was surprisingly good but the breakfast is totally self service and very limited. The bar, dining area and lounge areas are a major let down. Rooms were cold and uninviting and the bar closed at 10:00pm on Saturday night !!! Nice enough but don't go expecting Hilton and Marriott style service and facilities - The Essex could do much better.

Swimming pool wasn’t open. Hot room with no air con, just one fan. Asked for another as it was so hot but they didn’t have any more.

Very dirty, lots broken, breakfast is a joke Travel lodge would havin been a better option

The property location was beautiful. Our room only had one bed in it, we had 2 adults and a child, staff did bring a fold out bed down after requesting. The bed was small, the mattress was very thin which meant you could feel the wooden slates, therefore resulted in a poor night sleep and bad back. In the bathroom there was red stains on the wall, the wash gel had nothing in. The towels had signs of staining. The bedding also had a stain. Swimming pool was good

Stayed in the old part of hotel ,no 1 corridor was not clean at all fire door cobwebs and dragon flies by the fire exit Please mention to staff I don’t want to hear conversations outside my door in morning Receoption was friendly Lovely warm pool

Room is great. Would go as far to say as looked better than the photos which is rare. Only downside was that there is no mini fridge which was disappointing. But would for sure stay again if I’m in the area!

One night away due to work. Room was nice, breakfast and Wifi not so good. I was in a room at the end of the building and Wifi could not reach my laptop or phone. The mobile service is shocking, so it was hard to make calls and join Zoom meetings.

Large room, with a good view. Staff could have been more friendly. Options were limited for breakfast. All in all, great value.

Upon first arrival the hotel and room looked modern and nicely decorated. However the bed for our teenage daughter was a Z frame bed, which was uncomfortable it meant she slept on the floor! The noise from the room above, them walking about was a constant distraction due to unsubstantial insulation between floors. It sounded as if they were walking in your room. This meant we didn't have a restful night.

The facilities are ok, however, in this hot weather the hotel rooms really need air conditioning.

Upon first glance the room seemed nice and clean, very spacious too, also The bathroom was nice and tidy. A few things started to turn up that wasn’t how I’d hope a room would be, listed below are what we experienced: 1. We started to run a bath, and once the bath water was shut off we noticed the water was starting to drain(even though the plug was pressed down). It would not stay full, it just kept draining. Upon closer inspection it appears the plug was missing some sort of washer to stop the water draining out. 2. The walls are super thin! Like crazy thin, I could hear the people next door as clear as day and I’m sure they could probably say the exact same about how thin the walls were. 3. The door to our room seemed to have a large gap between the door and the floor of the room. This was letting in a lot of light and also made me uncomfortable as you could easily fit a small hand under the gap. 4. The bed we were expecting to arrive to was a king size bed. However we had two single beds put together. Whilst this isn’t the end of the world, it was very uncomfortable and irritating as my wife kept finding herself slipping between the two. It’s a shame as upon pulling up I had high hopes as the surrounding grounds looked lovely and secluded. We just didn’t get much rest and unfortunately would not recommend a deluxe double room just down to the noise and the bed situation mostly.

Found room boiling due they had activated central heating and can not be controlled room by room. Receptionist said "this is England". Also rooms had no isolation and no door seal, so you will hear doors banging all the time from other clients.

Room was a bit dated, no usb sockets and no power sockets. Bedside table to one side of bed only which was odd. Bathroom dated and would benefit from refurb. Staff friendly and helpful.

You are captive to the hotel as there is nothing else close by other than driving. This may explain the varied service level. The female staff were friendly and very helpful while the male staff were arrogant and rude. There is no AC and for some reason the room i had was so hot and the worst of all the rooms our group had. While the area is beautiful and the rooms were good - the stairwell areas had cobwebs at the windows and doors so made you wonder the cleanliness of the hotel. Struggle to say i would recommend staying here.

Service was excellent from check in to check out. The staff are all very welcoming and friendly. Room was modern, clean and very comfortable. Fantastic facilities to cater for the whole family! Our breakfast was delicious and staff were kind to prepare a special dietary meal for my husband. Will definitely visit The Essex again.

Arrived at 9.15pm and reception was closed. Night porter number provided, which we rang 5 times over a period of 20 minutes. A very frustrating start. A guy eventually came and got us in. Room great, clean and spacious. The iron broke and tripped the sockets so they all stopped working. The staff were very good at resolving this quickly, giving us use of another room as we were on a tight time schedule. We did breakfast as an add-on. On the Saturday morning the breakfast buffet was great, however the staff not great. The young lady serving walked off without communicating with us, leaving us confused. There is a need for customer service training! We enjoyed the food so returned for breakfast on Sunday morning. Allegedly breakfast is on until 10.30am at weekends. We arrived shortly after 9.30 to find barely anything there, not even tea bags- had to request these. Having had a vegan breakfast on the Saturday we were told this doesn’t exist on the Sunday. It did get sorted but again, there is a clear training need for staff. Overall, nice hotel. Staff either brilliant or very poor. Hit and miss!

Our stay was amazing from the first point of contact at check in to the check out. The room was fabulous with a wonderful view. All the staff went about and beyond to make our stay excellent.

Stayed at the hotel as I was attending a birthday party in nearby Earls Colne. The hotel was easy to find and location to the village was excellent. Staff were so helpful from check in to check out. Was a slight issue with my room during my stay but this was sorted expeditiously by the duty manager and housekeeping. Would recommend a stay here and would certainly stay again next time I visit the area.

Left Expensive phone charger in room rang to ask for it back apparently their staff have sticky fingers as it was not lost it was plugged in next to bed rang as soon as we left then again a day after terrible service no one even called us back

Overall, the hotel was lovely — clean, comfortable, and housekeeping were especially polite and helpful, even offering to assist with our bags due to the lack of a lift. However, the experience was let down by a frosty and unwelcoming reception on arrival. We arrived early (knowing check-in wasn’t guaranteed), but the older blonde receptionist we first encountered offered no greeting, no warmth, and no alternatives. Her tone was abrupt, and we were cut off mid-sentence. A simple “Feel free to relax in the bar while you wait” would’ve made all the difference. After speaking to other guests attending the same event — who booked for the same reason — we found we weren’t alone in that experience. Customer service sets the tone, and sadly, it didn’t reflect the rest of the hotel’s standards.

First impressions of the Essex is very good, nice location reception staff excellent, helpful and very welcoming, unfortunately it’s a shame the level of professionalism stops there. Bedrooms very average, bed was comfortable enough but certainly no better than a travel lodge or premier inn so you may as well save yourself the difference. Room was ok, but some of the hotel’s cleanliness requires a bit of attention. Bar staff not particularly great and drink prices changed every time I purchased a round of drinks and certainly not good value, glasses scruffy, very poor warm wine and when I brought this up with staff, I was told to just put some ice in it. Mowing machines start around 7.30am on Sunday morning so you may as well book an early breakfast, but at £16 pp you would be better going to the garden centre just a long the road it does a really good brekfast at half the price. Breakfast the next morning acceptable, but again when I told staff the coffee machine didn’t work, I was told I’m not surprised it never does.

Shopping village nearby is very convenient. Staff were very helpful. Walls are very thin, can hear people up and down the corridors and vehicles early morning, the room was very warm but bed was comfy, pool facilities were good.

The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings and only a short drive into town. Room was very clean and tidy with everything you need. The bathroom needed a bit of an update but not sure if this is on there to do list. Breakfast good along with the gym , pool and health spa a bonus although didn’t get time to use them. Overall great stay, will go back again.

Good place to stay if you want access to road links. Golf course is busy and the lawn mowing starts at 7am so if you want a lie in that's not always an option.

The rooms are pretty basic like a Travelodge, it didn’t have air con which it does state I just overlooked. The bar over looks the golf course which is pretty, the food at the bar wasn’t very good specially for the price.

The staff are very nice Rooms were nice but too hot. Amenities are great but I would avoid the breakfast Very disorganised in the breakfast room and no juice tea coffee cups cutlery or butter .

Room was spacious. Clean. Could do with a bit of a refurb perhaps. Spa and pool were nice. We didn’t take the pre paid breakfast option. There is a far better offering in the restaurant of all day breakfast which is table service and higher quality/ better options. The pre paid breakfast would have been wasted on our two very young children.

Great location, but the rooms weren’t clean. Breakfast was a nightmare. They took forever getting the breakfast items out. Staff too slow to take away dirty plates. Staff don’t acknowledge you are waiting and they chatter to each other.

Nice twin room, thankful to find the windows open and a fan on when we arrived. Check in was ok but no information about breakfast etc was given. Slept ok considering we were on the ground floor in the carpark with men shouting outside in the carpark, one of whom was there when we got back from a concert, sitting in the carpark just wearing underpants. Appreciated the tea and coffee facilities but there was only one spoon, and only one sachet of hot chocolate. Shower was nice, everything was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was not good at all. The menu in the room makes it look like breakfast is excellent but that's not the breakfast that's included in the room

Great facilities. Staff really friendly and helpful. Room looked great, bed nice and comfy. I’m not one nitpick but there was a used dirty towel in the wardrobe though. Bar and food reasonably priced, pizza was delicious!

4th time I've stayed here. Gym, Pool and Sauna free to use for guests. I received a free room upgrade this time, but all the rooms I've stayed in are decent sized with good facilities. Decent Food and Drink reasonably priced.
