The Chequers Inn

This is an hotel with a few guest rooms, and a nice gastropub. The room was excellent, modern, spacious, clean, warm, tastefully decorated. Comfortable bed. Bathroom was spacious, clean, modern, including bath and shower. Staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast was super Quirky points were (i) TV could be turned on to home page, but a message read that the signal was not strong enough to connect to any channel (I used my laptop instead) (ii) liquid soap container fixed to the shower wall was empty. But this wasn't a problem as another movable soap container was at the hand-basin (iii) there was a good supply of sachets of coffee and decaffeinated tea (which I didn't use)+ one sachet of normal breakfast tea which I used (Earl Grey and green tea were also on offer). (iv) In the shower/bath, three taps are available. It took me 2 minutes to understand that the central one is the temperature controller.

Fantastic stay. My room was very comfortable - nicely renovated. Plethora of plug sockets with USB sockets is very much desired nowadays. Some nice touches with a very welcome check in - being showed to the room which was welcoming with classic radio being played on the tv. Towels rolled and placed on the bed. Staff were friendly and the evening dinner was sublime. Thank you.

The room was fantastic. Spacious and well stocked, although there were only 2 sets of towels and the room had been booked for 3. The bathroom was huge. However, having booked bed and breakfast, we were told on arrival that they no longer served breakfast and this would be reflected in the price, but there was a cafe down the road. Not ideal when travelling with a child. Food was good, but £13.50 for a glass of wine is excessive. Check out was confusing, as I hadn’t yet paid for the hotel I waited until check out time, 11.00 to leave. No one was there to pay, I tried calling, but no answer so had to send a message asking them to call me for payment. When I got home I checked my credit card statement to find payment had been taken without telling me, and no receipt offer. Also because the pub wasn’t open we had to leave via their 24 hour access which is a metal fire escape. Not ideal with a suitcase. I have yet to hear back from them regarding the message I sent. A shame because the room was lovely.

Staff were happy and helpful, room was clean, comfortable, nicely decorated and well-equipped, food in the restaurant was lovely. Would highly recommend.

A fantastic little hotel. Really comfortable bed, great tea and coffee in the room and excellent food. No faults whatsoever and In over 40 days this year. This is up there with the best of them.

Amazing hotel stay. Really pleased with the room, the service, restaurant. We turned up quite late and hungry, it was around 9pm when we sat down for a 3 course meal. The food was fantastic and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Especially appreciated the warm hello from Michelle, the chef. Will not hesitate to stay here again.

My sister and I booked a double room with a sleeper couch because we were unable to get a twin room. The room was large and spacious and clean, with blackout blinds and curtains. The sleeper couch was a double bed size and needed to be made up on our arrival. However, for this bed there was no under-sheet or under-blanket supplied, only cushions and a duvet. One was expected to sleep on the couch itself, which ended up being very uncomfortable. Fortunately, it was only for one night, but I will certainly never book anything like that again. Besides this, the rest of our stay was otherwise pleasant. We had free onsite parking overnight, and an excellent breakfast with friendly service to round it all off.

Our stay at The Chequers was comfortable and the location was perfect for the wedding we were attending. The beds were so comfortable and the refreshments provided were excellent. We were disappointed that there was no breakfast available but fortunately the price of the room was reduced after speaking to the hosts. We found a lovely café in the town for breakfast which was great. The only improvement I would ask for is a bit better communication regarding check out and using the 24 hour access which was a fire escape, which was difficult for our family member with mobility issues. We felt that we had to ask for information rather than it being readily available or being communicated on check in. But mainly a great stay and we wouldreturn.

Really enjoyed our stay and the rooms were lovely and spacious. Staff very accommodating and also lovely dining and bar space.

Not a bad venue but.. rooms are showing need of decoration and getting tired, Air conditioning either didnt work or was set in a way that the room was still boiling and tiny window offered no respite. There is an obvious disregard for the regulations and L8 water regulations obviously not followed by the amount of scale present on the shower heads, and portable appliance testing well overdue. Resteraunt was overpriced & mediocre, still stuck in past serving on unhygienic wooden platters which the waiting struggle with so much server dropped chips all over table which really wasn't her fault.

Clean, spacious and comfortable room. Breakfast was delicious, I thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Great hotel with lovely food. Was very clean and comfortable. Only thing I would mention is that the staff were taking items from the external fridge/freezer at approx 7.30am with no consideration to the guests as they kept letting the door slam.

The family room we had was very spacious and clean. Lovely decor, very comfortable bed. We had breakfast which was included in the price which was very enjoyable. I cant fault this place, would definitely stay again

Pleasant surrounding, with very clean room, helpful staff, quiet throughout the night and good supply of amenities. What I didn’t like was lack of a walk-in shower and over done eggs when sunny-side was requested. Both minor. Very good stay at The Chequers. I recommend it.

I have unfortunately negative views about this property mostly based on poor communication about the 'included' breakfast (shown throughout my Expedia booking) which was one of the main reasons we chose this hotel. On arrival we were told that breakfast is only provided on Saturday and Sunday mornings because of a lack of staff. This obviously mean that our bookings were misleading as they stated that breakfast was included. The result was that we paid for something that was 'included' but then had to travel the next morning to find somewhere suitable to eat together for breakfast. Not great from the Chequers who presumably had not updated their details with Expedia. Expedia tried to contact the property afterwards but apparently they were unable to speak to anyone. Seriously? There is also nobody on any front desk at all, or even in the property overnight so I am not sure what would happen in the event of an emergency. And finally the bathroom in my room clearly had not been cleaned properly - the bath mat was dirty and looked used, and the toilet also did not look properly cleaned. Obviously after returning late there was no one to talk to about this. Not a nice experience.

Bathroom was not ready with toilets unclean and without second row of toilets tissue

Room and en suite were clean and spacious with comfortable bed. Breakfast was excellent as promised, cooked fresh to order rather than buffet.

The room was lovely, nice and big and well decorated. Lovely bathroom too. The pub was great, we only had a couple of drinks and breakfast but no complaints. The only small thing is we only had one bath towel in our room, we intended on running downstairs to ask for another one but ran out of time before we head to head out.

Large rooms and very well equipped. Very comfortable stay.

Check in at the bar was a little strange - they didn't seem to be expecting any guests but I don't think they had any vacant rooms. The room was smaller than expected - the description of the room booked included a sofa but there was none. Only 1 towel initially supplied - that was noticed when we entered the room by Connie? and rectified. Food was very good for both dinner and breakfast.

Stayed in this boutique style hotel and restaurant for one night as a couple. Were greeted by Kayla who was exceptionally friendly and seemed to do the majority of the work. The room was very good: clean, stylish and well equipped. Dinner was of excellent quality with a good choice and breakfast was similar. Just a couple of points let this hotel down. Several of the staff appeared downright miserable and, while they performed their jobs, failed to smile or make us feel welcome. Also, there was no marmalade available for breakfast ( how hard is it to pop out to a local shop if a delivery is missed?). No explanation was offered or apology given just "we haven't got any". Just a little extra training would put this place in the top league.

Lovely property. Food was delicious. Only issue I tried to contact them all day on my arrival day but the phone number was wrong on their expedia page. Definitely will be returning.

Stayed one night before funeral next day. Lovely, comfortable, ensuite room. Delicious dinner and hearty breakfast. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Would definitely stay again if in the area and happy to recommend.

Great stay! Booked the room to do all my Xmas wrapping and the staff were great! Only one issue was that I couldn’t work out how to work the plug in the bath so left it full of water 😬

Very pleasant location - building was beautiful quiet large dining pub with spacious rooms, good taxi and late running bus connections into Welwyn, Knebworth and Stevenage for alternative nightlife and facilities! Staff were great!
