Easy parking

Booked my room 6 weeks ago and stated that we needed a double room in the main hotel facing the pond. However, we were allocated a room in the annex building. A member of staff at the reception said they did not see the request and apologised. However, we were told all the double rooms had already been allocated. The room in the annex had the following problems: no phone connection to the reception desk to report any issues etc; very poor wi-fi reception - kept cutting off; hair dryer not working; weak shower flow with difficult temperature controls; hair dryer wasn’t working; no bath mat; very noisy location- sleep disturbed at 5.30am and 6.30am with loud noises made by delivery vans; insufficient electrical sockets, with some sockets needing a round pin plug - unable to charge iPhones. Very disappointing! However, staff very polite, friendly and helpful.

Reception welcoming. Lovely bar area for socialising with water meadow views. Mill is historic and the wheel is turning as a feature in the bar and restaurant area. Worth a visit if in the area. Easy walking into Sudbury. Plenty of parking for guests. A good selection of bedrooms.

Lots of character; very good staff; a pity there is no lift service.

Surprised that no connection to Reception from room - a long walk for a couple with arthritis and dementia. Also no room service- trying to take food back to our room would be extremely difficult.

Overall a good hotel, lovely views nice rooms, friendly staff, good food except breakfast where absence of a continued supply of hot fresh food, plates and drinks did cause some problems. Other issues include old fashioned shower that turned alternatively scalding hot and freezing cold as other guests woke up and took their showers. Really don't expect this in this day and age. On the same theme WiFi is definitely due for an upgrade.

Great hotel ,really good restaurant . Only negative no lift which makes getting to your room on the top floor after a few drinks interesting ! .

The setting is lovley, right by the river . the staff were all great .room comfortable,clean.my family dropped me off parking is busy ! breakfast buffet very good. Had Sunday roast was disappointed ..would stay there again.great location walk to town 10 minutes. I was visiting from usa everyone was so helpful No telephone in the rooms .. 10 out of ten Loved staying at the mill .

I was allocated a room in the annex. It would have been helpful to have had a map or better instructions on how to find the door /room or better still walk customers to the door! The room was cosy and basic but the shower room was not clean. The shower had residue on the tiles (I didn't use it!). The bed was hard as were the pillows. Bar staff were incredibly helpful and the food was incredible.

Booked to stay local to town for friends birthday celebration. Was advised at check in we had been placed in cottage building seperate from main hotel just few yards away. Ground floor room of decent size and checked in quite late before going out for dinner. Blinds in room broken and two large windows were directly alongside main road which was contact with cars and pedestrians and single glazed so extremely noisy with light shining through from main building all night. Room was filthy with cobwebs evident on ceiling, windows had years of dirt around frames and bathroom had ants everywhere. No water pressure in shower and sink plumbed wrong way round so nearly burned ourselves on tap thinking it was cold water. Breakfast was mayhem to say least and when all the above was pointed out to staff at reception no gesture of any kind offered. They had wedding so were at full capacity but even so, room should be clean at very least and it was so noisy got no rest. Shocking really and would not stay again.

Room was clean but bathroom could do with updating

I booked a superior twin bed room and got a bed that was just about double. The bathroom was dirty the plug was full of hair. Dirty old rim marks around the bath. Shower was cold went attempted to put on and the hook was broken. The staff could only say they were fully booked. The windows were broken and could hardly see out due to cobwebs and dirt. I didn’t even pull the covers to sleep in the bed. It was for a birthday present for me and a family member to stay in our the area as they are moving there and massively disappointed and will not ever tell people to stay there.

Room had a constant ‘white noise’ throughout the night which was very hard to block out. Shower needs new silicone in the corners as did look brown/black. Cobwebs on wall and edge or carpet looked grimy.

A nice stay but the room was incredibly dusty with spider webs. The location was excellent.

Room was very small and not very clean , bathroom had a mouldy ceiling , the cups had tea stains inside & out , dressing table was scratched grubby with peeled off varnish . The kettle was full.of limescale stains , the walls were very marked , yellow stains running down the window , chipped paint in window sill & walls . The shower gel dispenser was empty so nothing to use to wash in. The bar/eating area was was very tatty , the ceiling was covered in squshed flies and dirty marks , there were dogs everywhere in the eating area . In the evening there were a group of people who were shouting and loud which isn't suitable in a hotel . A customer whose dog knocked water over the floor took a glasses tea towel from the bar wiped the dogs face then the floor and then laid the cloth back on the bar where it remained for several hours ,which is unacceptable . The Plus side was breakfast which was lovely , loads of choice and very tasty . We complained to the reception about our room & the response was " i will tell management " no apology or anything . Ive added a few of my photos of the problems in our room.

Our stay was good but let down by some very basic mistakes probably due to a lack of staff. Evening meals very tasty & well presented but breakfast a bit of a let down. Dirty cutlery on table scrabbled egg like stiff glue & bacon overcook. The room very clean & tidy & well presented but surfaces in need of some tender loving care

The room we were given (no.6) was adjacent to an external walkway so during the evening particularly busy. There was a drip leak from the ceiling sprinkler system that had stained the quilt prior to our arrival. When the staff were informed they quickly changed the quilt but didn't consider tge cause. The next morning the quilt was wet. On the second morning there was no hot water for a shower. Breakfast was very good. We also had dinner on our first night and that too was good, although a coach party arrived shorytly after we had been seated and ordered so, despite the friendly staff, the speed of service suffered. The billing system applied an automatic 12.5% service charge rather than the customer deciding the %. The surrounding area is quite messy. There seemed to be a lot of young adults attracted to the balcony bar on Saturday evening, although we saw no trouble they were rather noisy so we couldn't sit there for a quiet drink.

The hotel is in a lovely location, surrounded by nature, shops, and restaurants, which makes it very convenient. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the receptionist even offered to help carry our luggage, which we really appreciated. That said, the hotel could benefit from some refurbishment. There is no lift, which makes it difficult when carrying luggage to higher floors. Our room, located on the second floor, was very warm despite the heating being off. We had to keep the windows open, and unfortunately, that meant a few spiders found their way inside. The bathroom was quite small and heated up quickly. I also found the tap a little stiff to use, and it broke while I was trying to open it. We had a family room with a sofa bed, but unfortunately, it wasn’t comfortable, the mattress was uneven, creaked loudly, and caused us two sleepless nights. When we asked about alternatives, we were told the only option was a zip bed, which didn’t sound like a significant improvement. Breakfast was good and had all the basics, but it would have been helpful if staff mentioned that different styles of eggs could be requested, we only found out afterwards, and the scrambled eggs didn’t appeal to us. Overall, this hotel is fine for a short stay, especially if you value the location and friendly service. For longer family stays, however, comfort may be an issue, particularly with the sofa bed.

It was a lovely hotel, felt nothing was too much troible, from the welcome on reception, to the dining room staff. Our room was ample size and had all you would expect, including extras like a coffee machine and biscuits. The views from the room were a bonus too

Everything was very good. Location, staff, food. Could do with a room thermostat as was a bit warm.

Lovely, friendly hotel, enjoyed a walk in the nearby fields before breakfast, which was also excellent. Room was clean and spacious, and staff went out of their way to help, on reception and in the bar

Dining room quiet but had to wait extended time for meal as seemingly more important guests being served elsewhere. Eventually given some complementary free bread but only at second time of complaining. Suggest better training in customer service required.

Very disappointing. Arrived Saturday lunchtime, front desk was pleasant. Went to the bar and ordered lunch, soup and a sandwich. It took an hour and 20 minutes. Our table was full of the previous couples leftover plates and drinks. I cleaned it after waiting an hour. Dinner was ok n the evening. Breakfast was a farce. On arrival at 9am there was barely anything available, no plates or cups. Another guest asked for bread for the toaster. When it came out it had mould on it! We ended up not having anything and checked out. I’d paid up front unfortunately, so if you do stay here choose to pay at the end of your stay. I’ve been given the operation managers email as no one could help us with a refund for breakfast!

The Mill is a lovely hotel but parts of the building are a little tired looking. The reception was not staffed when we checked out as the receptionist had gone for a drink and we waited for approx 10 mins.Not an ideal time to disappear when customers are wanting to vacate the premises!.The receptionists did not always acknowledge us when leaving and entering the hotel. A beautiful location.

The staff were attentive and friendly, room cleaning and restocking was on demand and was efficiently done when we wanted it. The room was at the top of 3 floors, with no lift and a narrow stairs. This would have been a problem if we had been disadvantaged in any way (or just much baggage). There was a late night fire alarm incident where all residents gathered in the reception. The staff did not really take charge and were not sure about how to cancel the (false) alarm and had to call someone for “codes”. The evacuation process could have been serious in a real emergency. Apart from this, it was a very nice stay in Suffolk, the hotel was very convenient for exploring the area.

Staff did their best but there were large queues for the bar and staff struggled to find clean glasses and tables were not cleared. Breakfast was very average with tea and coffee running out and not replenished and staff not noticing, the same with milk and juices, cups and teaspoons. A classic case of owners trying to run a busy hotel with the minimum number of staff and little attention to detail.

Good position with lovely views over the water meadows. Lovely position for enjoying a drink on a warm evening

Interesting location, alongside pool/river. Although the turn off from the main road can be tricky if there is traffic. The facilities are not luxurious but they are just fine -- basic but comfortable room, good dining facilities -- huge breakfast, two good evening meals. And the staff, from front desk to wait staff, are anxious to please. And an easy, if a bit hazardous, walk to central Sudbury, Gainsborough Museum, etc. Definitely would recommend if staying in Sudbury.

Nice hotel. Great location to explore sudbury /have some lovely walks. Really comfy bed. Shower a bit lacklustre and missing a piece that hid the glue etc but for the price i was happy. Bar has amazing fireplace and the mill wheel. Well worth a visit Breakfast wise you get when you pay for

This hotel is one we've been to 3 times now. I have a bit of a mixed review. The room was lovely, clean, good quality towels/bedding and very comfortable. We felt a little bit cold despite the radiator being on 5, so I asked the lovely lady on morning reception for some extra blankets. She said she'd get on to this. She is a real gem, very helpful and friendly, supplying us with anything we needed for the room: tea, coffee, buscuits. Then the lady who maintains the rooms came soon after with a couple of blankets. She also offered to try and find a suppliment heater for our room with no prompting from us..a nice touch, another very helpful staff member. All the staff we came into contact with were lovely. Now the other side of things for us. We sat in the bar soon after arriving and to say it was hectic was an understatement. There was such a backlog of orders for food, we were told we could not place an order for any bar snacks (3 plates) and they would tell us when we could order. There seemed to be this uncomfortable air of them struggling to keep up. At dinner we were shown to our table without menu for a while. Food was nice, but the staff were under pressure and a bit thin on the ground, hence we sat for about 3/4 of an hour with used plates still on our table and not asked if we would like a desert. Not an enjoyable ambience for our meal. Breakfast was uncomfortable too. There was a lady on her own flying around in a panic as things ran out, queues formed. Not good.

Nice place to stay for a stopover. That’s all I can comment on as that’s what we did. Paid for a king room which was on top floor. Had a great view of the moors surrounding and the nesting swan. Lovely and warm. On site restaurant was great. Food was ace. Water wheel still turning in the bar. Would stay again if I was in the area.

Property was exactly as described. Breakfast was tasty with plenty of cooked options. We had dinner in the restaurant on the first night and there was plenty to choose from and it was well presented and cooked.

Lovely hotel in great location with friendly staff, just felt that for the price of our room the standard wasn’t there- the bathroom so dated and tiny and the breakfast was absolutely terrible, not what you want when you’re spending £180 a night
