The castle sits on lovely grounds with walking trails and its own island. It is two miles from Tarbert, a convenient stop on the way to the ferry. The castle has comfortable sitting rooms, a bar and restaurant, and outdoor seating. Our room was quite large, with a living area as well as a bedroom and bath. We had water views from three directions. The staff was friendly. I would have liked a better map of the property for our walks. The room needed updating, for example, the carpet and parts of the bathroom seemed quite old. However, it was clean and comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Fantastic hotel situated in 60 acres of private grounds to walk and explore all the way down to the shore. Peaceful and tranquil surroundings to relax and enjoy. Excellent service and food from friendly staff. Highly recommend to anyone staying in the area.

We chose this hotel due to its convenience to the Islay ferry and we had a late ferry arrival. I was excited for the stay as the photos were beautiful and it stated it was a 4star hotel. I’d say it is a 2.5 star in reality. Clean but very tired. I wouldn’t stay here on vacation again.

Great service & food. Room was immaculate & large. Bathroom was really nice. The lounge had real fires burning & was very comfortable. Only drawback was the mattress wasn’t very comfortable.

Great location, views of loch fyne are outstanding. Staff are brilliant - very friendly and service excellent. However the rooms and bathrooms are tired and feel a bit grubby - windows had to be opened by the staff as they were too difficult to open myself. Restaurant food was bang average but prices were much higher than average - I am not sure what premium I would put on the view.

Perfect! We've been coming for more than 20 years - this was our 11th wedding anniversary treat (we were married here too). The service, food cleanliness, rooms, friendly welcome - it just keeps getting better! We will be back soon!

Staff and public areas were excellent and very comfortable. Unfortunately the grounds are in need of TLC which is a shame. The hire of a skip for a day to remove all the rubbish and fishing debris would help. The bedroom accommodation needs a lot of paintwork and updating. I've slept in more comfortable beds in Premier Inns! Housekeeping was a bit erratic. The quality of the food at breakfast was mediocre. However it's perfect for dogs and the staff were great.

This was a fun castle hotel. The decore of the bar and lounges were great. The view of the Lich was very nice the staff were friendly and they served a great breakfast. Our only complaint was the musty smell in the room. It got better with the window open.

Everything besides the room itself was excellent. The room had an very stiff bed, floors felt unclean, black specs all over bedding, and shower did not drain. Everything outside the room was fantastic, I hope we just got a bad room.

Overall the hotel was nice. Big concern was the inability to sleep as it sounded as though there was a washing machine or tumble dryer cycle continuously vibrating under room 25 on a lower floor. This humming stopped for about five minutes and then the cycle started all over again. So no sleep at all throughout the night. Not impressed at all

We stayed for 2 nights in deluxe doubles overlooking the loch. Large bedroom, separate sitting area and large bathroom, with great views out of all the windows. All of the staff were super friendly and made our stay even better. Great hot breakfast cooked to order along with the usual buffet items. Dinner was also very good, albeit with quite a small menu. The dining room has floor to ceiling windows overlooking Loch Fyne - what a great place to eat! Definitely recommend staying here in an unspoilt part of western Scotland.

A lovely loaction and authentic experience. Many of the staff are an asset to the hotel. The plumbing and creaky floors leave something to be desired, particlarly the shower drainage and water pressure.

Rooms need updating. Standard rooms have small beds and things that need fixing. Radiator didn’t work, window wouldn’t open, bathroom vent broken. All reported to reception but not fixed. Grounds and location lovely. Food not brilliant.

Last visit was our sixth visit to stonefield castle, we love this place because the dogs are so welcome and all the staff over the years have been great, we decided to go with the principle rooms this time as treat for family, nice rooms, well over priced for what you get, but that is the hotels story over the years its needed huge investment, rather than do that they have taken away the snooker room so its a bedroom, everywhere you go you see it still needs a huge investment, i guess its shareholders want their profit rather than spend to save a great building and gardens. However we will be back, stick to cheapest rooms we can get and will enjoy the wonderful food, accept the WiFi crashes the TV loses signal and just enjoy the wonderful tired old hotel and gardens with stunning views. If you rate the hotel as a 3 star then you wont be disappointed

The scenery is the real highlight of this hotel. The grounds are absolutely stunning. Staff service was also excellent. The room was comfortable with decent amenities (e.g. bath and body products) but it was also lacking in some ways (e.g. no fridge, tissues or AC). The restaurant food was average. I slept well and would stay again.

A two night stay with breakfast and we did dinner too. Unfortunately the weather was quite humid and the room was very stuffy. In the absence of air conditioning, we opened the windows with little relief. This made it very difficult to sleep. It is probably more comfortable in the cooler weather. The staff were excellent. The room, bed, bathroom etc was very comfortable. The breakfast was ok; the evening meals were a bit better, but in my opinion not great value for money. Give the langoustines a miss - not worth the bother or the money. The kitchen was situated below our room and the staff played loud music from early in the morning which acted as a very early alarm. Maybe an idea to turn it down. Also, the TV offerings were about the worst I’ve come across in a hotel. Free to air was a mystery to find - all we wanted was a news channel. Summary; an historic old building, perhaps relying too heavily on its character and ambience.

As I had visited the hotel before I knew it was a lovely spot on the Kintyre peninsula for a quiet few days. The hotel room was light and airy with a very well finished en-suite. The food offering is fine dining in the restaurant and a bar meal offering in the bar. The quality of the food is excellent especially if you like seafood, there is a reasonable choice for vegetarians like my partner. However we found the quality of service in the restaurant was not up to the standard of previous visits. The waiting staff were mostly young and appeared to be inexperienced which manifested itself in sloppy service. e.g. although they knew my partner was vegetarian they did not supply the vegetarian menu until prompted. The food on the first night was look warm due to excessive delays between courses. Although the service in the restaurant was patchy I can still recommend the hotel as a great location for a break in Argyll.

We stayed for one night, and overall it was a pleasant stay. Our room was clean & spacious, the staff was friendly, the public rooms were nice (drawing room, bar, etc), and the grounds surrounding the castle were gorgeous. Only complaint is that dinner was a disappointment with underwhelming food and very slow service/inattentive servers. Breakfast the following morning however was very enjoyable with attentive staff and delicious food! So it's possible we just caught an off night, but it did put a level of disappointment for an otherwise an enjoyable experience.

I cannot say enough about the most wonderful staff at this hotel. They were so friendly and accomodating. The meals were superb, and the view from the dining room unmatched. It is to be expected that it is an older building and some things are a little different, make sure if you have mobility issues to ask questions before you go. I did see wheelchair ramps. We truly enjoyed it and wish we had stayed another night or 2 to walk the grounds.

The castle sits on lovely grounds with walking trails and its own island. It is two miles from Tarbert, a convenient stop on the way to the ferry. The castle has comfortable sitting rooms, a bar and restaurant, and outdoor seating. Our room was quite large, with a living area as well as a bedroom and bath. We had water views from three directions. The staff was friendly. I would have liked a better map of the property for our walks. The room needed updating, for example, the carpet and parts of the bathroom seemed quite old. However, it was clean and comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

From check-in until check-out, everything was great. The building is wonderful, historical and relaxing. The staff went out of their way to be helpful. Restaurant was first rate, great dinner and breakfast. Spectacular views from the terrace and the dining room. Trails down to the water through beautiful trees and flowering shrubs.

Great location, views of loch fyne are outstanding. Staff are brilliant - very friendly and service excellent. However the rooms and bathrooms are tired and feel a bit grubby - windows had to be opened by the staff as they were too difficult to open myself. Restaurant food was bang average but prices were much higher than average - I am not sure what premium I would put on the view.

We stayed for 2 nights in deluxe doubles overlooking the loch. Large bedroom, separate sitting area and large bathroom, with great views out of all the windows. All of the staff were super friendly and made our stay even better. Great hot breakfast cooked to order along with the usual buffet items. Dinner was also very good, albeit with quite a small menu. The dining room has floor to ceiling windows overlooking Loch Fyne - what a great place to eat! Definitely recommend staying here in an unspoilt part of western Scotland.

We stayed for one night, and overall it was a pleasant stay. Our room was clean & spacious, the staff was friendly, the public rooms were nice (drawing room, bar, etc), and the grounds surrounding the castle were gorgeous. Only complaint is that dinner was a disappointment with underwhelming food and very slow service/inattentive servers. Breakfast the following morning however was very enjoyable with attentive staff and delicious food! So it's possible we just caught an off night, but it did put a level of disappointment for an otherwise an enjoyable experience.
