The Great House, Sonning, Berkshire

A lively hotel in the charming village if Sonning. We ate at the hotel which was also a great experience as we had booked an igloo in the garden. Well wirth a visit!

Lovely hotel in for extended family short stay. Rooms were all clean comfortable & well furnished. Food was great. We booked one of their igloos for 8 of us which was perfect and the service was excellent

Lovely hotel, clean, spacious and well appointed room and bathroom Only issue was parking. All of lower car park reserved for a wedding meaning very limited parking for hotel guests. All other aspects excellent

t was a lovely area on the Thames to stay. The room was great, hot, but there was nothing that could be done. Friendly staff. Parking on the Saturday was tricky as there was a wedding but clocked it and found a space before everyone arrived. The downside was food and drink. Both food and drink were very, very expensive and the food was very poor quality and value for money. We went elsewhere to eat at a nearby excellent pub. Tried 1 breakfast, food cold and far too expensive.

Outstanding location for a quiet stay. Very good food and service. If you want to stay the rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished. Super bathroom with walkin shower. Excellent parking facilities.

Had a lovely stay, gorgeous weather and food, drink and service spot on, woul recommend booking an iglu! On arrival car park full due to the lovely weather but the gentleman they had assisting did a wonderful job of finding us a space.

Nice, clean room with excellent rain shower. Modern with quirky 50’s style accessories. Great location and good free parking. The restaurant/ bar area is very good with lovely gardens overlooking the river. Excellent checkout receptionist but our check-in lacked warmth and information.

Stayed in double deluxe room, very clean,amazing shower and toiletries, room large had everything we needed desk, comfy chairs, lovely bed, fan, fridge with milk and water replenished each day, teas coffee biscuits and lollipops. Room has safe, ironing board and iron and hairdryer

Good points: Food in the Coppa restaurant is excellent. Fresh, beautifully prepared, really couldn’t fault any of it. The conservatory and outside space on the river is very nice. The restaurant staff were also excellent, helpful, friendly and obliging, with very few exceptions. The rooms were modern and clean. Bad Points: The receptionist checking us in was indifferent to us and everyone else, we imagine? We’d booked a ‘Biggy’ double (£200 a night) - we were given no.9 The extractor fan in the minuscule bathroom didn’t work and as a consequence the room smelt damp and fusty/drain like and was unbelievably hot, due to the intense lighting? We asked them to fix it, they didn’t manage it whilst we were there? The windows were safely locked and could only be opened 2inches. There is no air-con, just an extremely large fan that sounded like a small car running? It’s been a hot weekend and the room was diabolically hot and because of traffic noise and people generally partying, we had to have the windows closed at night - sleeping at night was therefore almost unbearable. I was also continually disturbed by a door slamming periodically through the night. This was not another resident but staff working downstairs beneath our room. I spoke to reception and they said they’d look in to it, after which, it was even worse! Sadly, can only recommend the restaurant, we would not stay at this hotel again.

Our room itself was lovely, it was well appointed, a good size and the bed was very comfy. The bathroom was spotlessly clean, had a great sized shower and the products supplied smelt lovely and were really good quality. Our only criticism was that the room had no air con, the bathroom has a really large heated mirror which means that the room was stiflingly hot and the windows could not be opened more than a crack to let air in. There was a fan supplied but it did not assist - it was a real shame because the temperature in the room made it impossible to sleep - it was just too hot and airless on what was a warm but not overly hot summer day. I am sure, however, that in the winter the room would be lovely. We will consider a return stay.... but just not in the summer!!

The bed was unmade, the room was tiny, there was no bath, there was no coffee, and it was very expensive....

Lovely hotel right on the river. Room clean and comfortable. I loved the extra attension to detail with the accessories in the room. Retro and fun.

The room was very clean & comfortable. The shower was lovely but the shower tray was very slippery so great care was needed. The towels were great but almost too large if being honest. It was a lovely touch having fresh milk in the fridge & cold bottles of water. We have stayed numerous times before & wouldn't hesitate to return.

The location, the hotel and the room was excellent. Everything was all very clean and the our room cleaned well everyday. The food in the restaurant was excellent. The service in the restaurant was not so good. I felt the staff didn't look around enough to see what was happening and when they were quieter, they weren't clearing tables. 12% service charge seems excessive when the service was below par. For both meals we had, we had to go to the bar to pay our bill, as we were unable to get the attention of a member of staff. We would definitely recommend the Mill for a show and meal. We literally turned up that day and amazingly they had some tickets.

Bathroom and room are worn and tired, loose tiles in bathroom and door doesn’t slide open easily.

We had a lovely stay at The Great House. Everything felt calm and organised, the room was clean and the bathroom was lush. We stayed in a 'cosy' room, which probably didnt need the chair in it making it even more cosy, but as we basically just needed the room for sleeping, it was perfect (warm as the windows dont open far, but there was a fan). The attached restaurant, The Coppa Club was a great place to while away a sunny afternoon and we met family for dinner there too. Food was delicious, the reservation was slightly messed up by them and a discount was applied without having to ask - always a green flag in my opinion!

Generally good. We had a compact room (room 6) that was right near the road so we were woken up very early. Good facilities in the room. Large TV. Convenient for short walk to the Mill at Sonning Dinner Theatre. Good breakfast in the adjacent Coppa Club but quite pricey. Disabled parking attracted non disabled drivers.

I love everything about this property. The rooms are massive, well appointed, and adorable. Heated towel rack - 2 sets of cookies and coffees/teas - seating area (even in the lowest priced room) .. I stay in a lot of hotels (200 a year) and this has to be one of my all time favourites. So much character - front desk staff wonderful ! Adorable in every way

We stayed in the family suite, the radiators didn’t work so the room was freezing. The room was also next to the lift and the cleaners cupboard. Late at night people were using the lift which vibrated the room and then the cleaners were loud in the morning. When checking out the receptionist wasn’t even interested!

Great location and nice staff. Only issue: the room was far too hot despite a fan and the windows could not be open far enough!

Stay was amazing, loved the room and bathroom. Only negative is there is no air con! There is a fan in the room however not the same and not sure I’d want to stay here in the summer

Beautiful hotel We stayed in ‘biggy, riverside view room. Lovely room with fabulous bathroom. Really nice toiletries. Ate dinner in restaurant, lots of choice and good value. Very friendly staff All in all an excellent stay. We would stay again

room was fine no 70 - was a bit close to the lift and lots of coming and going noises but was ok for a short stay room was very good size and nice elements like coffee machine / fridge and hamper bathroom nice and warm and shower great and hot restaurant is fine - food good bar staff very good floor staff ok - nice people but not very attentive lots of time waiting to be served and never checking once food served to see if need anything or another drink .. so in end you don't bother ordering anything else . so its pleasant but not made to feel special and at both breakfast and dinner no one came to clear my plate for at least 15 minutes the cappuccino made for me was delicious and the corn and courgette fritter was superb and nice to have something more interesting on the breakfast menu the caffetiere of coffee was disappointing and quite weak

Such a beautiful village. Not great welcome at the front desk and often had to look for someone to ask a question. Room was very nice but very hot and when the windows are open it is very noisy overlooking the car park and pub entrance/exit. It is a pub after all but definitely not a peaceful night when people chatting outside at nearly midnight and then people walking through the corridors at 5.45. Restaurant is nice, food is good and found a nice corner for a glass of wine. Wouldn’t stay again because of the noise and heat (and it wasn’t a hot night) but pleasant enough.

We booked 3 Biggy Rooms a month ago .to celebrate my 70 th Birthday These are the more expensive rooms .with River views in The Main House On check in we were given two Biggy Rooms and one room across the car park . A dog friendly room ,we have no dog ! The room smelt of dog and a ,dog barking in the room next dioor.and I am allergic to dogs ! So went to reception and requested to be moved to a Biggy room in the main building . We were told they were full no rooms available Not avery helpful member of staff on reception was rather rude and said rooms were allocated and basically insinuated it was just t . I then said could i have a discount as this was s not the room I had booked and the response was they couldn’t do that . Suddenly two rooms became available! Cozy room and a comfy room ! Again both inferior rooms . I took the comfy room as it was in the main house and not too far from my 2 sisters rooms . I feel the the reception manager should have apologised and maybe offered a discount . It is a shame as the rest of the staff we encountered were lovely My sister who paid for this night was the one who apologised She was the first to arrive and there were two different retention staff ,Eho were both friendly . However there was no mention then that the original booking could not be honoured . Will we be back .Yes as we enjo going to the Sonning Theatre performances . But on booking I will contact the hotel and make sure we will be in the rooms requested .

All great but on a number of occasions now the wait for breakfast has been ridiculous - up to 30 mins for eggs on toast. Our business frequently uses this hotel for team bookings and our days are often running late or having to move agendas around because of how long breakfast takes - or people are having to go without because they have to leave. You're becoming famous for this issue, please sort it!

I was disappointed with my room as it was a bit dark due to the window being so small - at breakfast I was disappointed with the service given by the waiter although was pleased with the assistance provided by the young girl at the desk When requesting our pot of tea be served with our breakfast we were told that it was not possible- ridiculous!!!!

Location was convenient for the purpose of my stay. Staff were very friendly and professional. Service to my room was excellent. Julia made sure whatever we needed she went out of her way to provide. Definitely stay again and recommend to others.

Great location and setting for a 1-night business stay.

Very convenient for the Mill and Henley. It's popular, many seem to use it because the carpark is full.

Very comfortable room and very quiet, we slept very well. Reception staff very friendly and helpful. Great location for village centre and walks along the river.

The garden of the property borders on Thames, and is very peaceful. Our room was comfortable and clean. We selected the hotel because, while not at Heathrow Airport, it took around 45 minutes to get to the airport to drop of the hired car. Next time I would try to arrive earlier in the day to allow us to see more of Sonning.

Perfect location within walking distance of the Mill Theatre. Nice decor. Lovely food.

This area is very historic and lovely to look at. There are several good dining options within walking distance, including at the hotel. The Thames is very nice here with ealking paths available.

The room was very spacious and very clean. Eating in the dining room was very slow and the menu was rather limited. Same menu for lunch and dinner so over 4 days it as rather repetitive. It took a long time to get a coffee especially at the weekend

I had a wonderful stay at the Great House. The room was well furnished with a great bathroom. The setting by the river at Sonning is very picturesque and the Coppa Club for breakfast and dinner works so well.

Idyllic setting by the river, and in walking distance from The Mill Theatre. Cool decor, very clean, lovely and comfy 'cosy double' room. All hotel and restaurant staff are very friendly and helpful. Restaurant food is tasty - not cheap, but good burgers and delicious range for breakfast. Top tip - book and PAY in advance for your breakfast to guarantee a table and pay the maximum of £17.50 rather being charged for individual items.

Liked the hotel room. It was a decent temperature. Bathroom was good with a nice powerful shower. Carpet dirty in places…. Not always practical. Coffee and tea on offer which is nice. We ate dinner at the restaurant and my husband did not like the flank steak and frozen baked fries. Overpriced for what was served. My fish and chips were better and I liked the option to have batter or no batter.
