Cardrona Hotel

Wonderful hotel! I highly recommend. Oasis compared to the madness of Wanaka. Cardrona Hotel is a beautifully restored old hotel. Surroundings are clean, quiet and beautiful. Staff warm, relaxed, helpful and friendly. Food and coffee excellent. Count yourself a winner if you stay here.

This is such a cool place to stay. The rooms are basic with everything you need, comfy beds, warm and the decor has a nice country feel. You can eat at the iconic Cardrona hotel or toast marshmallows around the outdoor fire then wander back to your room. Great staff as well.

Having stopped here for lunch many times, I always wanted to stay as it looked so lovely! I was not disappointed. This place was just wonderful. From the room to the staff, food and grounds, I can not fault anything. The fireplace, inside and out was the best. The hot tub was relaxing as well.

Cardona Hotel is a GEM! This is our second time staying here. We've stayed in a lot of great places all over NZ, but Cardrona Hotel is by far our favorite. They've done such an amazing job with the restoration, keeping it feeling like an old mining hotel/pub, but still very upscale. The rooms have all new amenities but still look like they could be original. The bar, restaurant and outside areas are where the hotel really shines. If you're here in ski season, this is the go-to aprés-ski if you're on Cardrona Mtn. The mulled wine is worth lining up for and the cozy interior or multiple spots by the fire pits out back make a great place to hang out after a big day on the mountain. Both the bar and restaurant food are delicious. If you want to eat at the restaurant, I'd make a reservation. It's absolutely worth it. If you're staying at the hotel, their breakfast is also just what you need to start the day. This time we stayed in summer, and it was just as lovely. Instead of mulled wine, they had sangria! It was great! We sat out in the back area, the weather was lovely, and again, the food....perfect. As amazing as the hotel, drinks, food and premises are, what really sells this place is the staff. Always so nice, friendly and attentive. Even when we were there, we had a huge unexpected rush of customers. While obviously a bit shorter on staff and under the pump, the staff never waivered in their charm and service. All of this is to say.....stay here. You'll love it.

Stunning gardens where we enjoyed a beautiful meal. Easy parking next to property. We stayed in the room with a balcony overlooking the gardens - breathtaking! We also had access to the hot tub - worth it! Staff are super helpful. A trip highlight!

The historical Nate was very alive in our minds to as it feels like it might have many years ago just better! The room was clean, pretty and made more spacious as we got the coveted top end with a deck!! 100% recommend the Cardrona Hotel for everything you need and want!

We loved our stay here, the rooms were a great size, warm and spotlessly clean. We had bar snacks in the afternoon and breakfast. The food was amazing. Will definitely be back.

Every detail was thought of — from the quality amenities to the stunning gardens. The location was perfect. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience — we’ll definitely be back!

The room was unexpectedly phenomenal! Bed and bathroom were exquisite.

It's a beautiful hotel in a lovely location. I highly recommend it. Would have loved to stay there more than one night. Would love it if there was a fridge and microwave in the room. The food in the bar was amazing, albeit a bit pricey.

We stayed in room 22, very noisy and had trouble sleeping. This room is next door to the laundry and the Dryer seemed to be turning on and off all night. At 1am we got up to turn appliances off at the power points. Laundry started up again early am, so much for sleep in. Through the night there was also noise from another power plant turning on and off.

Very nice place to stay at. Very hot in the room though, with no A/C. Understandable why they don’t have A/C though as would only be used a few weeks a year. The TV was about 20years old and didn’t work so maybe they should update though with some FlatScreens on the wall and do away with those old cupboards. Otherwise all good and awesome Bar/Restaurant etc

Very cute old fashion feel, lovely sitting area outside. Great food, walls in the rooms were a little thin. Beautiful views.

The cottage gardens were a delight and an oasis and the pub staff were very nice. We had booked a family room for 4 of us which was located on the ground floor. The beds were clean and comfortable, the walls very thin and people above us walking could be heard. There was no microwave or fridge in the room (the only accomodation in our entire travels through NZ) not to have it, which was disappointing as we had bought cheese to take back home. When I asked they said they are a hotel and hence these facilities are not there… that was a real surprise. Milk provided was inadequate and we had to ask a couple of times for milk just to make 2 cups of tea a day. The showers were great however a curtain around the shower would be useful as the toilet and floor around the toilet was soaking wet each time we used the shower. Wifi was hit and miss. The hotel has a charming look and feel to it but I don’t think I would stay there again as it did not suit our type of travelling.

The property is right next to the bar by the roadside, and the bar’s courtyard is just outside the room. Although the bar says it closes at 10 pm, they were still playing loud music after 10:30 pm, and customers were chatting in the courtyard. It wasn’t quiet or private enough, and the room was very small.

Wonderful location, full of character, helpful staff, option of bar food or restaurant, reasonable prices, only slight criticisms are no air conditioning (not even a fan) and a (very) old tv! Overall an excellent stay though!!

Great spot. Food was top quality. Staff very excellent. Only thing that would be good was if the rooms had a fridge which would be such a simple fix. Kids weren't a fan of the tube tv either😂 but didn't matter to us. Would definitely stay again.

Sign at reception says to check in at the bar if no one’s available so I went to the bar where the bar maid was quite rude and dismissive. We were too early to check in (which is strictly 3pm) so we went to the next town and arrived back at 8.30pm and had to go back to the bar to check in as fairly, no one at reception. Unfortunately we got the same lady at the bar who then asked a lady who was waiting tables to check us in and she said she didn’t have time. A lovely gentleman however met us back at reception and took us to our room. There is no fridge and we were travelling with food so we had to throw out what we had and the only place to eat is the hotel itself for 23km. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful but we were not feeling welcome and decided to stay in our room. On check out at 10am, no one at reception so I was dreading going back to the bar. Thankfully it was not the same lady. We also stayed one less night as our tour in Queenstown was cancelled due to rain and rescheduled for the next week which put us a day behind. Management agreeing and allowing a refund for the last night was an arduous process blamed on Expedia however our other bookings had to be changed also and were simple, friendly and took minutes.

Very clean and quiet. Great place to stay. The only problem was checkout. You had to checkout at the main bar. There was a que of about 20 people ordering food and also checking out. After waiting for 20 minutes there was still about 15 people in

I can’t rave about the Cardrona Hotel enough - everything from the room to the service was 5-stars.

The staff were friendly, the room was clean, but there was no fridge in the room. You are staying in a little village, where the hotel is on the edge of the courtyard,, which is very busy, with all the guests for dining and the bar. It wasn't quiet at first, but quieted down. They changed ownership in the middle of our stay and so couldn't use debit or credit cards after the first night which made it complicated.

This is a great little hotel and turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. The restaurant is a little expensive and we were never really sure if our room number was 12A or 13, but aside from those quibbles it had a great vibe, was very comfortable and cozy, and the location was ideal, a fairly easy (and dramatic) drive to Queenstown one way and Wanaka the other! Highly recommend it.

Older property on the side of the road from Wanaka to Queenstown. Rooms were smaller but clean. Nice outdoor garden area and restaurant onsite.

Great big room with comfy bed. Location is unique on its own in the Cardrona pass with exceptional views on the drive to it.

Beautiful hotel close to Wanaka on the way to Christchurch.

We loved the Cardrona Hotel! It was a little respite in the middle of open country. The rooms were pretty basic and there was some hotel noise we could hear from our room, but the staff and food were fantastic! I loved the little garden courtyard in the middle and the fires burning both inside and outside were cozy! We saw two rabbits outside our window one morning, having a snack amid the flowers growing around the peripheral of the property. If we ever make it out that way again, we will definitely be back!

Absolutely magical. This hotel is 160 years old and still operating with full charm, comfort and class. An added bonus is it is close to two great ski resorts.

Amazing property, hidden gem! Half way between Wanaka, Queenstown and Arrowtown. Would stay again!

Love this hotel. First time we’ve stayed rather than visited for an afternoon. Highlight, apart from the gorgeous garden bar, is the food. Consistent quality. Rated every meal. Only thing I would love to see changed is having a breakfast service for in house guests rather than guests needing to order through at the bar. Coffee is also excellent.

What a neat place to stay. There was a great vibe in the bar with a mixture of locals and tourists. We had a delicious meal in the restaurant. We love that they have kept the heritage of the buildings inside & out which adds to the atmosphere. We stayed in the Gemtle Annie room which made for a lovely overnight. Will be back!

This is an iconic place that some may drive by, some may stop and take some pictures, but only those that go inside will understand just how special this place is. We stayed the night and had the best dinner of our two week trip in NZ! And the bar is a classic with great beer, wine and cocktails made from local sprits like the Source Gin.

Couldn’t fault my stay and dinner in the restaurant was exceptional, both the service and the food 10 out of 10. I eat out a Lot and this was the best of both I have had in a very long time

We did not appreciate being charged for "water". This was already on the table at dinner before we sat down with guests. NZ does not charge for water unless specifically sparkling water is asked for.

We had an amazing stay and enjoyed great service and excellent food.
