There is extensive parking which is a benefit. The first impression when walking into the lovely building is of an unloved and uncared for property. There clearly has been a lot of thought put into the decor in the hotel's past however scuffed and chipped paint on the doors and old *fashioned unmatching carpets add to the sinking feeling. The bedroom furniture is out of date and tired. The bathroom well at least it was clean however the tiles and fittings are so outdated and tired looking with the grout in the shower/bath being moldy. Nobody wants a corner bath from the 1980's in peach. Going into the restaurant you have a small bar with tired and ripped flooring behind it - not great when in an area where food/drink is being transported and you require highest hygiene standards. Service - slack and non attentive. Food quality - started off really well with a nicely presented starter which was tasty main course was OK. However a request for sauces and vinegar resulted in me having to go to the bar and asking for it as there was nobody present in the restaurant. The result of my request was a plastic bottle of vinegar and a plastic bottle of ketchup. I did not have breakfast at an additional cost of £15 my expectations following the experience to hand would not have been met. The expectations for the price of the stay were not met. The lack of uniform and formality within the venue does not meet the expectations of paying the price of an upgraded room.

Loved the grounds and the surroundings of the hall and was brilliant that we could bring our dog with us (£10 supplement). Comfy bed very warm and cosy bedroom. Very good value and tasty 3 course meal.... But a very cold bathroom with no heating facilities and no toiletries provided (no hand soap/shower gel). But overall a good hotel. Would stay again.

Unfortunately our room was above the function room and there was a wedding on. The dico was very loud so we couldn't think about sleeping until after midnight when the disco finished! The shower was very poor as you had to hold the attachment in your hand. I couldn't use it as there were no grab handles or slip mat! The bed was far too soft for our liking .... you could feel the springs! We arrived at breakfast half an hour before service finished so fried eggs were solid and they had totally run out of butter! On the positive side. The rooms were very spacious in the main building. We were also able to check in at midday rather than 3pm as we had arrived early to park the car and go to a different venue for a wedding! Apart from the solid eggs and lack of butter the breakfast was good.

I have stayed at Makeney Hall five times now which says a lot. This time I was with my dog and also a friend. I booked two rooms which Expedia said were, "in the courtyard (briliant) pet friendly and on the ground floor". Upon arrival, I was told that both rooms were on the first floor. I explained what Expedia said and reception fixed it so my friend would be on the first floor and me and my dog couldl be on the ground floor. Due to this, despited being told that the room would be ready after three, me and my dog\'s room ended up being ready around 5 p.m. For us, it was fine but other travellers might have been upset. Also, after enquiring from reception the time for breakfast, we were told that it would be from 7 a.m. as the next day was Monday. We arrived at around 7.40 to be told that as it was a bank holiday it would be starting at 8. Again, not the end of the world but we are reasonable people and some aren\'t. We had to eat in the beautiful drawing room which is a fair way from the non friendly restaurant. If I had been travelling alone, this would have been a problem. Also, the drawing room was not set up for our breakfast and so I had to strip a table in the restaurant of napkin, knives and forks. Again, bot the end of the world but I thinik that it can make pet owners a bit ostracized. I still love Makeney Hall and will stay again. This is constructive criticism, only I will always recommend this fabulous hotel.

the building whilst quite old is also a little tired in some areas and could do with an element of refurbishment. The building is a beautiful hall in even more beautiful setting. The staff were absolutely wonderful and could not have been bettered, So friendly and helpful. Even the two weddings the hotel were catering during our stay did in no way interfere with our long weekend. We had a great time and we already know we will be booking again.

Only had a 1 night stay for a local event. Lovely place to stay in private grounds. The building was very nice although the room in the courtyard was slightly dated and basic but clean and comfortable. We took our dog with us and had an evening meal with friends (8 of us) and they gave us our own private room (a meeting room) which was great and perfect for all of us. Bar staff was very helpful and efficient. Would definitely go back if in the area again.

Very lovely enclosed courtyard and parking area that was safe for dogs - lovely staff and facilities. Could offer dog food perhaps as some pubs do now!! (dog friendly sausage & mash for example)

The location is lovely but it's a old, tired, worn out hotel in much need of renovation - the sash window was broken so wouldn't stay open, the toilet seat broken, thread-bare carpets, the shower was a trickle and the taps broken. Admittedly the room was cheap, but it wasn't great.

Our room was wonderful - spacious, immaculately clean, beautifully furnished and with wonderful views from the windows, out across the surrounding countryside. The breakfast was first rate, and really set us up for a day of adventure in the local area. We loved our visit to Makeney Hall and will definitely be back for another stay in a few months.

We were really disappointed when we arrived. I had booked the hotel to coincide with the murder mystery event for my wife’s special birthday. I had booked an executive room (40) but when we got inside there were hairs in the bath, mould around it and mould on the bathroom ceiling around the fan area, which despite indications that it was, clearly wasn’t working properly. There was dirt a scuffs on the paintwork and several large cracks in the wall which had been filled but no painted over. There was a lot of dust on the surfaces in the room and the house keeping left a lot to be desired and i didn’t feel that the room warranted it’s executive status. Clearly not the experience we wanted for the weekend so I complained and we were moved, and upgraded, to a suite (6) What a difference. The room was much nicer as you would expect, freshly decorated and looking good, on the surface. The house keeping still left a lot to be desired. There was a large black hair in the drawer, discarded capsules and other rubbish in one of the bed side drawers and a unused tablet in the other - clearly a health hazard. In addition the toilet seat was the wrong size and was loose. I have photos of the items in room 6 if you want to see them. All that said we had a great murder mystery evening which could have been so much better as mentioned above.

Makeney Hall was an ok place to stay. It was a long way from great but equally had some very good points. The staff were all helpful and friendly and on arrival I was given an upgrade which was a brilliant surprise, and very much appreciated indeed! The room was large and comfortable, bed comfy but pillows were really hard and not great at all. Weak shower flow and toilet wasn't very clean (stained quite a bit brown, I wouldn't let my toilet at home get like that...). The hotel is really very tired and crying out for some TLC; painting, decor etc. It's a real shame as the building is lovely and is steeped in local history. The gardens are beautiful and a lot tidier than the house! Food is ok but the full English breakfast is fantastic, one of the best for sure which I highly recommend! So all in all, sadly a few negatives but also some good positives too. If I returned I would definitely take my own pillow! Belper is a super place to visit, right on the edge of the peaks with some stunning countryside and lots to do.

Polite and friendly staff. Cleanliness was obviously a priority. The hotel proved a wonderful centre for the places we had planned to visit and a great place to return to to rest. The meals we ordered were splendid and the breakfast choices were splendid.

The hotel itself is nice; our welcome by Reception staff was good, and check-in was quick and easy. We booked an Executive Twin Room. The bedroom was nicely decorated, however the bathroom was in need of an update as well as a thorough clean! Blue liquid was on the back of the bathroom door and across the back of the bath, and dust had gathered on the back of the door, clearly visible when it was closed. There were cobwebs and a dead spider above the shower too. The mattresses were pretty hard and the pillows could have been better quality, and a nice touch would have been to provide dressing gowns in the closet. The service in the bar was pretty bad too - I tried three times on my first visit to the bar to locate somebody to serve us, eventually going to Reception, and then was completely ignored for 4-5 minutes on the second visit by staff working in the restaurant until I had to go inside and ask if anyone was serving. All in all a pretty disappointing visit, especially for a hotel that is not inexpensive!

First room I checked into seemed cold and damp and there was a constant noise of the cistern running Quickly changed to another room thus one was cold and took a good few hours to warm up I left the heater on all night. Cleaners came twice to clean my room at 10am and at 10.49am check out is 11am Food lovely and well presented. Staff friendly lovely old building

My husband and I came here for an overnight stay to celebrate my birthday. We were greeted by Fiona the receptionist who was so welcoming and very friendly. She was so helpful and nothing was too much trouble in asking for anything. We loved our room which was spacious, clean and very cozy! We both had a good nights sleep too. We are both vegan and had a lovely vegan breakfast that was hot, fresh and delicious! Service was friendly and quick too. Thank you so much to the lovely lady who served us. Overall we both enjoyed our stay at this lovely hotel. Thanks so much to all the staff who dealt with us.

We live be a characterful hotel and this has plenty. The grounds were fabulous and immaculately maintained. The room we had was tired, curtains worn out, bathroom dated (1980s champagne suite) and shower and tiling poor. The wild flowers growing through the fire exit door made us laugh. Bar and restaurant excellent.

Unfortunately our room was above the function room and there was a wedding on. The dico was very loud so we couldn't think about sleeping until after midnight when the disco finished! The shower was very poor as you had to hold the attachment in your hand. I couldn't use it as there were no grab handles or slip mat! The bed was far too soft for our liking .... you could feel the springs! We arrived at breakfast half an hour before service finished so fried eggs were solid and they had totally run out of butter! On the positive side. The rooms were very spacious in the main building. We were also able to check in at midday rather than 3pm as we had arrived early to park the car and go to a different venue for a wedding! Apart from the solid eggs and lack of butter the breakfast was good.

The room was separated from the neighbouring room by a internal anointing door and you could hear every word that the neighbours were saying and they were not quite, we paid extra for a king size bed but we were given two single beds pushed together and one was at least 3 inches higher than the other as shown in pictures. The room was like something out of a 70 time warp and it was not clean the carpet was dirty the staff were nice but it in no way made up for its shortcomings.

My husband and I came here for an overnight stay to celebrate my birthday. We were greeted by Fiona the receptionist who was so welcoming and very friendly. She was so helpful and nothing was too much trouble in asking for anything. We loved our room which was spacious, clean and very cozy! We both had a good nights sleep too. I have stayed at Makeney Hall five times now which says a lot. This time I was with my dog and also a friend. I booked two rooms which Expedia said were, "in the courtyard (briliant) pet friendly and on the ground floor". Upon arrival, I was told that both rooms were on the first floor. I explained what Expedia said and reception fixed it so my friend would be on the first floor and me and my dog couldl be on the ground floor. Due to this, despited being told that the room would be ready after three, me and my dog\'s room ended up being ready around 5 p.m. For us, it was fine but other travellers might have been upset. Also, after enquiring from reception the time for breakfast, we were told that it would be from 7 a.m. as the next day was Monday. We arrived at around 7.40 to be told that as it was a bank holiday it would be starting at 8. Again, not the end of the world but we are reasonable people and some aren\'t. We had to eat in the beautiful drawing room which is a fair way from the non friendly restaurant. If I had been travelling alone, this would have been a problem. Also, the drawing room was not set up for our breakfast and so I had to strip a table in the restaurant of napkin, knives and forks. Again, bot the end of the world but I thinik that it can make pet owners a bit ostracized. I still love Makeney Hall and will stay again. This is constructive criticism, only I will always recommend this fabulous hotel.

Only had a 1 night stay for a local event. Lovely place to stay in private grounds. The building was very nice although the room in the courtyard was slightly dated and basic but clean and comfortable. We took our dog with us and had an evening meal with friends (8 of us) and they gave us our own private room (a meeting room) which was great and perfect for all of us. Bar staff was very helpful and efficient. Would definitely go back if in the area again.

The hotel itself is nice; our welcome by Reception staff was good, and check-in was quick and easy. We booked an Executive Twin Room. The bedroom was nicely decorated, however the bathroom was in need of an update as well as a thorough clean! Blue liquid was on the back of the bathroom door and across the back of the bath, and dust had gathered on the back of the door, clearly visible when it was closed. There were cobwebs and a dead spider above the shower too. The mattresses were pretty hard and the pillows could have been better quality, and a nice touch would have been to provide dressing gowns in the closet. The service in the bar was pretty bad too - I tried three times on my first visit to the bar to locate somebody to serve us, eventually going to Reception, and then was completely ignored for 4-5 minutes on the second visit by staff working in the restaurant until I had to go inside and ask if anyone was serving. All in all a pretty disappointing visit, especially for a hotel that is not inexpensive!

It was satisfactory. Did not feel any ‘love’ or positive vibes. Receptionists lovely on first day. Second day one was a bit job’s worth. I asked if we could stay an extra night as we were visiting my mum at nursing home in Holbrook and thought we might like to stay on. I asked if there was anything she could do on the rate but said there wasn’t and that her manager wasn’t around. As a result we decided to leave it but the hotel lost out on business as the room was available. The fact that there was no wriggle room on price or desire to ask was a little surprising - particularly as we might become ‘regulars’ at the hotel as we are a big family. I then asked the same person if we could have an afternoon tea there for my mum on a Saturday with whole family. I was told ‘we don’t do afternoon teas on a Saturday’ and that I should email the events coordinator, and rattled off an email address. We have decided not to ask your hotel to host a tea for my 98 year old mum as you obviously don’t need the business and everything seemed like a huge effort.

We hardly spent any time in the hotel on this occasion. Our room was lovely and spacious. The bathroom is looking tired but it is very clean. Breakfast was lovely, and ordered from the table. Great decor in my room- double with single occupancy- and very comfortable bed. Really liked the sense of history around the place. Usually stay in a Premier Inn when I come to the area- can’t see that I will go back there after this stay at Makeney.

Makeney Hall was an ok place to stay. It was a long way from great but equally had some very good points. The staff were all helpful and friendly and on arrival I was given an upgrade which was a brilliant surprise, and very much appreciated indeed! The room was large and comfortable, bed comfy but pillows were really hard and not great at all. Weak shower flow and toilet wasn't very clean (stained quite a bit brown, I wouldn't let my toilet at home get like that...). The hotel is really very tired and crying out for some TLC; painting, decor etc. It's a real shame as the building is lovely and is steeped in local history. The gardens are beautiful and a lot tidier than the house! Food is ok but the full English breakfast is fantastic, one of the best for sure which I highly recommend! So all in all, sadly a few negatives but also some good positives too. If I returned I would definitely take my own pillow! Belper is a super place to visit, right on the edge of the peaks with some stunning countryside and lots to do.
